Many thanks, Linda Carriero Dianne Hire Since 1985 Dianne has been quilting with a personal flare. She lives by a Hard ’n Fast Rule: find out the rules and determine a way to break them. While loving traditional techniques she has built a career out of outrageous quilts, chaos and mayhem in workshops as well as fun, informative lectures, bold designs and daring color combinations. She loves to be introduced as having the color sense of a first grader. Her visit to ECQG will be fun for all involved. As a scrap quilter she finds ways to put fabric together in unusual shapes, with great additions to decorate her pieces. Even if you have never done art quilting, even if you’re not a scrappy girl, you will find Dianne a great maker of quilts, and a speaker that makes you smile. Like many quilters, she did not anticipate making this her career and yet she has become quite famous as a quilter, lecturer and teacher. Her quilts have been shown in Paducah, Dallas, Quiltfest, JAX, Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival among others and she has won many awards. Her work has appeared in major publications and in corporate collections. In addition to writing two quilt books, she was also the editor of the book, Oxymorons: Absurdly Logical Quilts! Happy Spring, Quilters! Birds chirping, blue skies... yellow clouds of pollen... Spring has sprung in Atlanta! I find myself drawn to brighter colors and more cheerful patterns this time of year, and once the pollen settles, I'll drag my hand crank out to the porch to catch some rays while I finish some blocks. Does your quilting time increase or decrease in this beautiful weather? Does it make you want to play with fabric or play outside? In a perfect world, I would do both all the time! The Guild has obviously been hard at work, given the number of pillow cases, place mats and quilts Stella Lang has collected for Community Service. Keep them coming, we'll reach our goal in no time! This month we happily welcome Dianne Hire. If you're looking to shake it up a bit and do something a little more creative, you'll want to snag one of the remaining available spots in her workshops. Don't let the words "art quilt" scare you... art is subjective, and as quilters, we're ALL artists! Happy quilting, and we'll see you back in our usual location at Nolan Hall in April! Andi Barney
Looking Ahead
History is usually written by men about men. Have you ever wondered what the women were doing? We can appreciate where we are by understanding the journey women took to get us here. Glenda Jones will be giving an overview of women and their lives from the early 1800's through the 1940's. The main feature will be a trunk show of antique quilts through this time period. Her earliest quilts are c.1830 and move through to the kit quilts of the 1940's.

March Community Service Update Guild members have taken seriously the Community Service goals adopted for 2016. As of the March meeting, members contributed 144 placemats (58 percent of goal), 56 pillowcases (22 percent of goal), and 56 quilts (22 percent of goal). With three-fourths of the year yet to come, it seems likely that we will meet or exceed these ambitious goals. We want folks to know more about us than our great quilt show! Publicity is attacking two different ways to get word of our wonderful guild out. First, we are asking all ECQG members who belong to other guilds, shop in quilt shops outside of Marietta, have an in with gallery owners or other places that might be interested in quilts, live in neighborhoods with group activities and bulletin boards and any other group you might be able to share with to let us know if you could please talk to people, post information about upcoming meetings and be ambassadors for ECQG, please drop me an email. Our second focus is letting our neighbors know about the great charity work we do. If your bee group is doing a charity project, or if you know someone who works in newspapers, tv, or blogs, please let us know about it. Danielle Morgan

ECQG 2017 CHALLENGE IT'S A JUNGLE OUT THERE!
LIONS...TIGERS...AND BEARS....OH MY! THINGS THAT GROWL OR HISS OR FLY
CREATURES THAT HIDE AMONG THE TREES CAN YOU CREATE A QUILT WITH THESE?
A FEW SIMPLE RULES IF YOU WANT TO COMPETE BY JANUARY 27, 2017 IT MUST BE COMPLETE
RULES
1) Your quilt must represent something that lives in the wild. (not just the
jungle!) It can be as traditional as "bears-paw" or "monkey wrench" blocks, paper pieced, artsy, or modern.....whatever your preferred method.
2) It must include a recognizable piece of animal, bird or reptile fabric. 3) It must include a "tree" somewhere. There are always trees in the jungle. 4) It can be any size up to a maximum of 60" on a side. (yes, miniatures are
OK!) However it must measure at least 30" on a side to be considered for entry in the AQS Ultimate Guild Challenge in July 2017**
5) A note about what inspired your quilt must be pinned to the back. 6) It must be three quilted layers and a label must be on the back including
your name. (which will not be revealed until after the voting for the top ten.)
**The 2017 Challenge emphasis will be to provide a wonderful display at the ECQG Quilt show in June of 2017. The main emphasis will not be to send quilts to AQS. However if, when we vote on the top ten, there are eight that meet the AQS guidelines they can be entered into the Ultimate Guild Challenge. East Cobb Quilters’ Guild General Meeting Minutes LaSalette Hall, Marietta, GA
March 18, 2016 The meeting was called to order at 9:37 AM by President Andi Barney. Minutes - Andi asked for approval of the February minutes as published in the March newsletter. Danielle Morgan made the motion which was seconded by Carol Bellamy. The motion passed on a voice vote. Treasurer’s Report – Andi reported on behalf of Robin Meyer that the Guild had $34,953.79 in the Guild Account, $30,429.31 in the Guild CD, and $4,057.40 in the Quilt Show Account for a total balance of $69,440.50 for the period ending February 29, 2016. Hospitality – Alycia Davis indicated no guests were in attendance. Sunshine – Helena Krapp said five cards had been sent out to people either sick or who have lost a loved one. She asked members to let her know by email, by phone, or by filling out a card and dropping it in the Sunshine Box if anyone needs some sunshine. New Bees – Andi reported on behalf of Kim Ayers that four people attended the meeting at Harry’s earlier this month. Eight quilters from the North Fulton area have formed a new bee called “Bee So Creative”, and eight others have expressed interest in joining a bee. Upcoming Programs– Christie Stevens announced the following schedule: April – Art quilter Diane Hire. Workshop registration will be open on the website this weekend. There are still openings for her classes. Ben Hollingsworth brought in a quilt made in Diane’s style and Sandy Rice spoke to the membership about a Borders Class she took from Diane. May – Glenda Jones will give a trunk show of her antique quilts. June – Bonnie Hunter is our guest speaker. Registration for her workshops will be open to membership and members will be limited to taking 1 of 2 classes offered. Members were asked to vote for their 2 favorite classes out of almost a dozen potential classes selected by Christie. Show Update– Lynn Rinehart and Pam Cobb asked people working on applique blocks to please turn them in no later than the next meeting. The dates of the quilt show will be June 8, 9 and 10, 2017 at the Cobb Civic Center. Lynn is still looking for a few chair positions and specifically noted she still needs two food chairpersons. 2017 Challenge– Jan Cunningham reviewed the pertinent information about the “It’s a Jungle Out There” quilt challenge. The rules can be found on the website or in the newsletter. Quilts must be completed by the January 2017 meeting. (continued)

Community Service – Stella Lang reported that as of today’s meeting, 22% of our pillowcase goal, 47% of our placemat goal, and 20% of our quilt goal had been turned in. Publicity– Danielle Morgan said she had 2 goals this year: 1) To get the ECQG name out via other guilds, art and quilt shops, Twitter, and Blogs; and 2) Have articles published about our community service projects. Danielle is also chair of Postcard Sales at the Quilt Show and sent all attendees home with a postcard to make. Website – Shelby Smith was absent but asked Andi to relay that improvements to the website were being worked on and should be unveiled shortly. Membership – Carolyn Powers said 89 people were in attendance and that 2 new members joined today for a total of 232 members. Door Prizes – Pat Deacon awarded several door prizes. Golden Scissors – Fran Fister advised there was one golden scissor award. Strip Club Announcement - Andi Barney reported on behalf of Nancy Hutchison that the next strip club meeting will be held April 2 from 12-4 PM at the Community Bible Church in Kennesaw. Show & Tell – Kay Harper assisted members in showing their quilts and making announcements. Program - Following a short break, Christie Stevens introduced Taffy McLaughlin who gave a wonderful lecture and trunk show entitled “Not Just Another Quilter’s Journey.” There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 11:28 AM. Rules for Golden Scissors There have been some questions about the rules for Golden Scissors. So, here they are per the guild by-laws.
1. The quilt must be completed within one year of the date the scissors are awarded. 2. The quilt top must be made by the owner, except for Block of the Month, and friendship
quilts. "Cheater cloth" quilts are not accepted. 3. All quilting must be done by the owner. 4. The quilt must have a perimeter of at least 280 inches as confirmed by the Golden Scissors
Chairperson before the meeting is called to order.
A Golden Thimble charm will also be awarded for quilts that are hand quilted in addition to meeting the Golden Scissors requirements.

Pam Cobb started the meeting at 6:45 p.m. Bella Bamert opened up the meeting with her quilt story. She shared a Round Robin quilt that was that the Ladies of the Night Quilting Divas Bee (Quilting Under the Influence), did as their first project when they formed as a Bee. She also shared their second project, a Row Quilt. Bella highly recommends members joining or starting a Bee to develop lifetime friendships, and even make a few awesome quilts! Upcoming Programs - Christie Stevens and Pam Cobb April – Dianne Hire - Art Quilter, she will conduct two workshops May – Meg Latimer Trunk Show – Dare to be Different!. Day Meeting - Glenda Jones – Antique Quilts Trunk Show – Women’s History Through Quilting June – Bonnie Hunter – Signup for her two workshops will be open on March 26th – sign up early! Green Quilting – March Program Artistic projects - make things for retirement home: placemats, wreaths, door hangers, folded wreath or it can be used as a candle mat. Scraps, selvages, string pieces, piece right on the batting, onto paper (old phone books), turn strings into scrappy binding. Save widths of unused binding and store by color family. Ticker tape quilts. Tiny bits of fabric can be ironed onto Misty Fuse into patterns for use in art quilts. Franken Batting – Zig Zag pieces together (or use batting fusible tape) to make larger pieces from small leftovers of batting. Stacy from Terminus Threads spoke to the group. They find textiles that would be otherwise thrown away and finds a use for them. They make table napkins, coasters, men’s pocket squares, and lunch mats. They donate 25% of profits to a different local charity each quarter. Stacy can be reached by e-mailed at [email protected] Ben Hollingsworth – Wool sweaters that has been felted can be used in art quilts. Ben saves the strings from washing fabric and uses them for his bushes in his art quilts. Old skirts can be made into aprons.

Library (Chris Sizemore) – free block patterns were available on the table on the way out of the meeting. New Bees (by Andi Barney) – A new Bee was recently started with eight members. Newsletter Information The newsletter is published every month, except for a combined Nov/Dec issue. The deadline for articles and information is the 2nd of each month. • ECQG meets monthly, (except November) on the last Friday of the month. Social time starts at 9:15 am at the Parish Center of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 4905 Roswell Road NE, Marietta, GA.

Enjoy your Freedom? THANK A VETERAN Dear Volunteers, Thank you for doing what you do for our veterans! It's time once again to return to the E. Cobb Government Center, 4400 Lower Roswell Rd., Marietta, GA for our THURSDAY, April 14, Stitch-In. Please arrive when you can, (I'm there at 7:40AM) and depart when you need to ( 4ish pm). As you know, we met on WEDNESDAY, March 9, last month to enable you to attend the Sewing/Quilting Expo. One of the vendors I always enjoy visiting with is Deb & Duane Granger of Freedom Star Quilt Shop, Hudsonville, MI. Deb graciously gave us 3 patterns that I will bring to the April 14, meeting. I also have about 6 other patterns to share with you for your next QOV. If you know of a new quilter that needs alittle practice at learning the skills, please invite her to join us. I'll be happy to teach her. Please bring the project you are working on and if you need one, we'll have one for you. If you have a small ironing board & an iron, that too would be helpful. We now have a portable design wall for the purpose of auditioning blocks in a pleasing arrangement. Let me know if you are needing (free) batting or backing for your top. Measuring the length & width of the top will determine how much backing you will need. Please write the figures down and present to me. If all goes well, I'm about to place an order for Patriotic fabric for our future quilts. A complimentary lunch will be served. I just need to know you'll be there for lunch. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again and most of all, SEEING the progress you've made since the last time. Again, thank YOU for the part you are playing at 'Making A Difference.'
