July Birthdays

JUNE PRAYER Dear Father in heaven, in your Word we trust, in your Word of eternal life, given us in Jesus Christ our Savior. We build on this Word of life in these days when it seems that everything is losing strength and val-ue, and yet there is so much longing in people’s hearts. You will not let our hope be disappointed. What you have spoken must be fulfilled. What is promised in Jesus Christ must come into being, not only for a few but for the whole world, for which he died and was raised from the dead. Be with us. Keep us so fully alive that our lives reflect all the goodness we are allowed to experience and we overcome all the evil which tries to attack us. We thank you for calling us to life and for renewing us again and again. May your name be praised among us forever. Amen.

By Jackie Trottmann Father’s Day is a time when Dad’s have their day. Father’s Day cards are filled with messages of, “Relax, You’ve Earned It!” and images of men sitting in front of the television with their feet propped up in a re-cliner and their trusty remote, beverage of choice and snacks at their side.

What does it really mean to be a father? I believe that being a father is one of the toughest jobs in the world, especially being a good father. But first, I wanted to send my prayers and blessings to those who have lost their fathers/husbands. For many this is a difficult time of experiencing loss. I have no words other than that my heart goes out to you.

Blessings to Fathers in the Military

To those fathers and husbands protecting our freedom and serving in our armed forces, I lift up a prayer for peace and comfort for your fami-lies and for your safe return home.

Blessings to the Loving, Supportive Fathers

To the loving and supportive fathers out there, I admire you and acknowledge you. Being a great father is not easy in our society. As a whole, our culture has lost the practice of good manners and being civil to one another. There is an overall lack of respect, especially between children and parents.

Constant television commercials present fathers as total morons to their families. The children talk down to them, the wife talks down to them and the sales people in whatever store they are in talk down to them. Belittling and disrespectful “humor” towards anyone is not hu-mor. Particularly in these examples, it’s demeaning and degrades men.

The strength of the father in the family unit is critical. Every person wants to hear from their father that he is proud of them. In Luke 3:22 Jesus hears the words from his Father, “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

Blessings to Fathers Who Never Had Role Models

While society can be tough on the father figure, many fathers were not fortunate to have a role model growing up. How many men have a father who showed them what it meant to be a man, to have integrity, to be an example, to show them how to live? As a child growing up in the 50’s the men went to work and the women stayed home to raise the family. Ozzie and Harriet and Leave it to Beaver were the role models. But many children, even with a stable mother and father in the household, were abandoned by their fathers even when the fa-thers were “present”. Dad came home from work, ate dinner, read the paper and went to bed. If there were little league games, Dad missed them because he was at work. Many men provided money to the fami-ly but they never provided emotional support. Emotionally they aban-doned their children. That “unspoken” message screams into the souls

of young hearts, “You don’t care. I don’t matter.”

Yet, how did our father’s fathers treat their sons? What kind of role models did they have? If they were treated the same way, the pattern of not being emotionally invested will continue. As a parent, no one gives you a universal instruction manual. It would be nice, don’t you think?

Perhaps you were fortunate to have loving support growing up. Or maybe you just made a decision to break the cycle of hurt, abuse and abandonment and vowed to not continue the behavior you were raised with. It takes great courage and I applaud you. With age can come wisdom as well as receiving lots of grace from God., God is good.

Bible Verses for Those Fathers Who Need Encouragement

So, fathers – know that you are loved by God. For those whose father is not involved in your life, here are these words of encouragement:

Psalms 68:5 God is, “A father to the fatherless.” II Corinthians 6:18 “I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” And finally, one of my favorite verses: I John 3:1 – “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”

May God bless fathers on earth and in heaven Father’s Day and every

day

God Bless Fathers On Earth and

In Heaven

WHAT MAKES A DAD God took the strength of a mountain,

The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun,

The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night,

The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagles flight,

The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed,

The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need,

Then God combined these qualities,

When there was nothing more to add, He knew his masterpiece was complete,

And so, He called it ... Dad Author Unknown

Sunday, June 10, 2018 Children’s Day observations in the United States predate both Mother’s and Father’s Day. The day to celebrate children dates from the 1860s and earlier. The Methodist Episcopal Church at the Methodist Conference of 1868 recommended that the second Sun-day in June be observed annually as Children’s Day. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in 1883 designated the “the

second Sabbath in June as Children’s Day.”

The Children’s Day Website, www.nationalchildrensday.us, offers help and also challenges parents, individuals, churches/houses of

worship, schools/places of education, government/community and businesses to sign commitment cards directed at affirming Ameri-ca’s children. We pledge to “commit ourselves, in the coming year, to love, cherish, nurture (physical, mental, emotional, & spiritual needs), and affirm...” They also can make a commitment beyond America to the world’s children.

National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month (MHAM) is now recognized as a National Health Observance by the federal government In addition to being the month that officially kicks off summer. June is Migraine and Headache Awareness Month, which aims to increase edu-cation and discussion about migraines and en-

courage increased research to cure them. This cure would help the estimated 1 billion people who suffer from migraines worldwide, who often have to cut family picnics and pool days short due to light or noise sensitivity and severe pain. Migraines are one of four types of primary headaches and are consid-ered a disorder of the nervous system. Typically, migraines cause a throbbing, continuous pain on one side of the head, but in some cas-es, patients may experience pain bilaterally or on both sides. Mi-graines are often accompanied by nausea, vomiting and light or sound sensitivity. Along with missing out on family time, migraines can lead to missing work and/or school days and can become a costly health issue. There can be four stages of a migraine, although not everyone experi-ences each stage. These include: Prodrome/Preheadache Prodrome is the first potential stage that some patients will experience and can occur hours or days before the migraine attack. During this stage, specific warning symptoms can help signify an oncoming mi-graine, including food cravings, neck stiffness, constipation and un-controlled yawning. These symptoms alone do not mean a migraine is developing. But they can become warning signs for those with a history of migraines and important indicators as sufferers track symptoms leading up to the attack. Aura Aura is the next stage that may occur before a migraine sets in, alt-hough only 25 percent of those who suffer from migraines report aura. Auras are nervous system symptoms, most commonly visual, such as flashes of light. These can also include sensory, motor and verbal disturbances. These symptoms commonly last for 20 to 60 minutes. Headache/Attack A migraine usually lasts from four to 72 hours if left untreated. The frequency of occurrence varies from person to person, but can occur several times a month. During a migraine, you may experience the following symptoms: Pulsating, throbbing pain, Pain on one or both sides of the head, Nausea and vomiting, Light, sound and sometimes smell sensitivity and Blurred vision.

JUNE 1–30 Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month

Cataract Awareness Month:

A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of your eye. For people who have cataracts, seeing through cloudy lenses is a bit like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. Clouded vision caused by cataracts can make it more difficult to read, drive a car (especially at night) or see the expression on a friend's face. Most cataracts develop slowly and don't disturb your eyesight early on. But with time, cataracts will eventually interfere with your vision. The most common symptoms of a cataract are: Cloudy or blurry vision, colors seem faded, glare. Headlights, lamps, or sunlight may appear too bright, a halo may appear around lights, poor night vision, double vision or multiple images in one eye. (This symptom may clear as the cataract gets larger), and frequent prescription changes in your eyeglasses or con-tact lenses. National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month (MHAM) is now recognized as a National Health Observance by the federal govern-

ment.

Men’s Health Month June is the time to celebrate the men in our lives. During June we want to draw attention to the pre-ventable health problems men face and encourage action – be-havior changes, early detection and screening, and treatment. The men in our lives play many roles. They are fathers, brothers, neighbors, coworkers, team-

mates, coaches, mentors, and the list goes on and on. They often take responsibilities within each of these roles very seriously. Howev-er, we need to encourage them to take their own health seriously too. Their health must be a priority.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Welcome to the 2018 North Georgia Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church. It is a gift to me to be on a journey together with you. I am anticipating a meaningful time together at this 152nd session of the Annual Conference as we worship, listen and learn from one

another.

Our conference theme this year is “Moving Toward Perfection in Love” and our focus will be on spiritual disciplines. I chose this theme and focus because the foundation of our lives individually and as a com-munity must be grounded in prayer and disciplined spiritual practices.

The Holy Spirit moves through us when we listen.

In this session we will worship together and pray together. We will be inspired to deepen our prayer life in daily sessions on spiritual disci-plines led by leaders from here in our conference. Extensive planning has gone into our four worship services. Those services will again be

led by excellent practitioners from here in North Georgia.

We will collect a special offering to benefit our conference’s Ministerial Education Fund. Each of us benefits from the education of our clergy and together we can ease the burden of the expense of that educa-

tion. Join the effort by giving generously to our special offering.

Please join me in praying daily for our time together. Pray for one an-other. We will be further along on our journey together if each of us arrives “prayed up”! I encourage you to read a book that will prepare us for our time together: Soul Feast: An Invitation to the Christian Spir-itual Life by Marjorie J. Thompson. You are also invited to join our clergy in reading: Anatomy of Peace from the Arbinger Institute and Crucial Conversations by Ron McMillan, Kerry Patterson, Joseph

Grenny, and Al Switzler.

In closing, I’d like to share with you a verse from scripture that I have been focused on this season. "As God’s chosen ones, holy and be-loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meek-ness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a com-plaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiv-en you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful.” —Colossians 3:12-15 (NRSV) Grace and peace to you, Bishop Sue Haupert-Johnson

6

We are thrilled to have Rev. Fleming Thompson, Jr. return to East Point First Mallalieu UMC and trust you will continue to have an in-spirational and enjoyable time worshiping the Lord. There is some-thing amazing and powerful about the worship experience as voices rise as one to bring the Lord the honor due His Name! Thank you for your previous years of service and we welcome your return.

Annual Conference 2018 WHEN: Tuesday, June 12, 2018 to Thursday, June 14, 2018

The United Methodist Church was officially formed on April 23, 1968 with the unification of the Methodist Church and the Evangelical Unit-ed Brethren Church, along with the dissolution of the Central Juris-diction, a segregated group of African American congregations.

With the words “Lord of the Church, we are united in Thee, in Thy Church and now in The United Methodist Church,” the new denomi-nation was birthed at the constituting General Conference being held that year in Dallas. The words, said in unison over joined hands, by Bishop Reuben H. Mueller of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and Bishop Lloyd C. Wicke of The Methodist Church, signi-fied the formation of one of the largest denominations in the world, representing 53 countries.

“We are celebrating 50 years since a historic coming together among likeminded Christians of different regions, languages, cultures and customs because of their common grounding in Wesleyan spirituality and practice,” said the Rev. Fred Day, general secretary of the Gen-eral Commission of Archives and History. “The historical event also marks the formation of a church free from the institutionalized segre-gation of the former Central Jurisdiction. Now white and African-American United Methodists lived into a Church sharing annual con-ferences, same bishops and same appointment systems as never before.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.

Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, pic-nics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future. Its growing popularity signifies a level of maturity and dignity in Amer-ica long over due. In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today. Sensitized to the conditions and experiences of others, only then can we make significant and lasting improvements in our society. The celebrations that followed the reading of the proclamation by General Gordon Granger began a tradition that has lasted for one hundred and forty four years, and today is hosted in cities across America and beyond. The JUNETEENTH.com website is dedicated to this celebration and to those who tirelessly contribute to its contin-ued existence and growth.
