From the Desk of Father Ed:

Dear Parishioners,

Happy Easter! Our 40-days of Lent have ended. Today, we rejoice because our Savior has risen from the dead. Our Gospel reading from St. John gives witness to Jesus’ Resurrection. “On the First day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb.” She went and told two of Jesus’ closest friends, Peter and John, “they have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know where they put him.” The stone from the tomb was removed and Jesus’ body was not there because he has been raised from the dead and is alive. When John, the beloved disciple entered the empty tomb, “he saw and believed.” John, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was the first to believe that Jesus rose from the dead.

The Resurrection of Jesus is such a tremendous event in our Church that it needs to be further pondered and celebrated and so the Church extends the celebration of Easter for 8 days, which is known as the Octave of Easter. The Church also gives us 50 days to celebrate even further the season of Easter. The Easter season concludes after the celebration of Pentecost Sunday on May 15th.

In our second reading from St. Paul to the Colossians, St. Paul was reminding his community that since they were baptized into the very life of Christ that they too have been raised with him. We too through the sacrament of Baptism have died to our old self of sin and have risen with Christ to new life. St. Paul tells us also that we should, “think of what is above, not of what is on earth.” Today we celebrate with the whole Church, all of our brothers and sisters, the great news that Jesus has risen from the dead. He sits at the right hand of the Father as our Glorified Lord and Savior. We are no longer held captive by the prince of this world, the evil one, rather we are set free from sin and death. Let our hearts and minds be set on the things of heaven. We no longer belong to the world but we are children of the Father because he has sent his only Begotten Son into the world who suffered and died for us and rose from the dead. He has opened the gates of Heaven for us and yet remains with us until he calls us home to be him forever in the Kingdom. We no longer have to fear death because Jesus has come back from the dead and is risen. Happy Easter!

Our Lady Queen of Peace, pray for us,

Father Ed, Administrator

Parish Life:

Again a special thanks to our parishioners who have given so generously to our food pantry. Mondays have become a busy day at the food pantry where numerous individuals and families that are struggling financially come for food. If you would like to help out with donating food for the needy of our neighborhood please see the bulletin for more information…thank you and may God bless you for your generosity and thoughtfulness.

Next Sunday, April 3rd is Divine Mercy Sunday: At all the weekend Masses we will be displaying the Image of Divine Mercy, which will be blessed and venerated. The Church has declared that the First Sunday after Easter be dedicated as the Sunday of Divine Mercy. It is a great gift that is given to us by the Church on this day of mercy. The Church has declared that all the faithful can receive a plenary indulgence, granted under the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer for the intentions of Supreme Pontiff) to the faithful who, on the Second Sunday of Easter or Divine Mercy Sunday, in any church or chapel, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for a sin, even a venial sin, take part in the prayers and devotions held in honor of Divine Mercy, or who, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus (e.g. Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!"). Come and join us at 3:00 pm on Divine Mercy Sunday for Eucharistic Adoration, Reconciliation, and the recitation of the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet.
