Sales results are dependent on standards… not budgets!

Eastwood in Focus

By JOHN LEES

Sales & Marketing Specialist

At a recent training session I said to the sales people at-tending „If you created a product or service and went into business for yourself, and you then hired me to sell on your behalf to the market you wished to serve…how much interest and influence would you expect to have in relation to my sales behaviour?‟ Without hesitation everyone said „A lot!‟ There is nothing strange about that reaction but there is something very strange and ominous about the fact that very few companies show sufficient interest and wield any influence over the conduct of their sales people. When phoning organizations you may hear someone say „this call may be monitored for quality and training pur-poses‟ but with sales people „on the road‟ the edict appears to be this: „every man for himself!‟ At almost every „sales conference‟ or key meeting that I attend, it is normal to hear managers talk about sales and profit re-sults in relation to budgets. Conversely, I have never heard a manager at such meetings report on how sales behaviour and sales activity is moving along in relation to standards set…even when results are way behind budget! This is unbelievable, especially when you remember that sales activity and conduct is what causes sales and profit results. Is management scared of setting uniform stan-dards of behaviour, with and for sales people? Is manage-

ment apathetic about standards or just unaware of the importance of benchmarks…or is the process of creating excellent sales models for the team just too damned hard? About the best business has been able to manage so far is a strict mention of how many sales calls must be made by sales people each day, like as if such an empty edict is going to solve the problem. Whether you are a manager or a sales person, if you are interested to remove this serious impediment from the sales-achievement process, here is where standards of excellence need to be set: • First…‘sales propositions’ that match the needs of the market must be created. The want of the market is for products or services but the market‟s need is for better results, which necessitates adding very good ideas to the products or services you sell…to consistently improve mutual business performance.

Without this „standard‟ you are at the mercy of the mar-ket, meaning that if you just offer product or service (and there is an abundance of both available to the market!) then get ready to experience endless price and margin pressure…plus complaints and depression at sales team level! On this topic, the obligation to create excellent propositions lies with management…not the sales force. • Second…‘sales tools and sales strategy’ that enable sales people to „present‟ sales propositions in uniform, high qual-ity ways. Such tools and strategies must feature an emphasis on business language, as opposed to product blurbs. • Third…„sales planning‟ that commits the team to levels of

action that will see to it that their selling efforts are reach-ing the right sections of the market. Obviously, continuous training must support the sales team‟s use of propositions and strategies. Less obviously, constant feedback must be gained on how the sales team actually performs in the market! The use of standards does not lead to sales people becoming parrots, but it does stop them from acting like galahs! So, to reach sales growth and budgets, aim higher…and set standards! PROMOTE YOUR OWN BUSINESS

THE SHACK YOUTH

OUTREACH

Every community has teenagers with problems and ours is no different. In all suburbs, there are young people suffering family breakdown, abuse, sexual assault, chronic unemployment, depression and drug or alcohol addiction. They aren‟t always visible, but there are in there in surprising numbers.

The drop-in centre, known as The Shack, is a safe and supervised space, free from drugs and alcohol, where teenagers can interact, enjoy social and recreational activities and receive counselling, referrals

and support. The centre is open five days a week and runs workshops on drugs, alcohol, computers, health and fitness and other relevant issues to the young people of today.

Last year over 1500 teenagers attended The Shack, and a quarter of this received counselling, family or court support. In addition we assisted many young people to gain employment, find crisis accommoda-tion or access government assistance, education or other services. We also provide much needed food

and clothing to people in financial difficulties. The Shack is a non government charity which relies on the generosity of the community to keep it going.

JACQUELINE PETTIT

THE SHACK YOUTH

OUTREACH PROFILE

Born in Uruguay and arrived in Australia when I was 16. I have two daughters, aged 15 and 12. Always been interested in working/helping people who have a drug addiction, so I started off as a volunteer- feeding homeless and substance addicted people in the Cabramatta area. Initially I worked with adults but found I was getting on better with teens and so I enrolled in Youth work. I have done courses in Community Welfare, Child protection, Community Law, Alcohol and other drugs, Counselling and Youth Work. After working in Cabramatta I went to work for Juvenile Justice, in a boys detention centre. I'm currently doing an Alcohol and Other Drugs diploma. I'm very passionate about the work and I consider myself fortunate to be able to witness the transition that The Shack‟s clients go through with a bit of assistance and support. This year I was nominated for Woman of the year award by Mr Tink and for the last two years the Shack kids nominated me for “Australian of the year”. When they call me mum I wonder if it is for the love and support I try to give them or the nagging I do about The Shack being messy. Hobbies…Tigers, books and motorcycles. I love reading and I have a fascination with serial killers and the criminal mind. I would love to do law and continue to work with Juvenile offenders. My dream would be to be the female version of father Riley so I can have a greater impact on working with youth in need, and open more Shack branches in needy areas. Kylie has a lot to look forward to, especially with her upcoming 21st birthday party. I took Kylie as a guest to the Macquarie Rotary Club lunch time meeting, as well as meeting the other members, she was able to look around her 21st birthday venue, which is at the Macquarie Uni sports Club. Thank you to Macquarie Uni Sports CEO Deidre Andersen & the Macquarie Rotary Club for letting us use this hall for the 21st, free of charge. It has a bar, where guests will pay for their own drinks of course. Plenty of parking and a lovely view of the sports oval. Kylie was really impressed. The Macquarie Rotary Club have donated $300.00 towards the party and additional to that supplying the meat & sausages as part of the food package. Jim Jamieson from Meadowbank TAFE is organising his florist students to make centre pieces for the party as well as organising other things. Jackie Petit is organising a garage sale to raise money for this as well. Anyone who has goods for the garage sale please take them to the shack as soon as possible. Invitations, Cake, DJ have already been organised by Jackie. I will be taking Kylie shopping for decorations. Her color scheme is pink & black. If anyone would like to donate towards this, especially other food, nibblies (she likes M&M's), other desserts, also decorations, this would be great. Her party is on Saturday 15th September and I will be asking Kylie if she wants any helpers to help on the night with BBQing, serving, cleaning etc. Thank you Roseanne Gallo RG Music & Events PH: 9801-6262 Mobile: 0418 692 410

Kylie Polglase was born in Melbourne on the 13th of September 1986. Just before her third birthday she was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. It is the most common genetic illness yet the least known. Kylie spent her fifth birthday in the Children‟s Hospital and after that she was always in and out of hospi-tal. Kylie says that the hospital became her second hospital and saw the medical staff as her extended family. Progressively her illness became worse and she spent more time in hospital then at home. Conse-quently all around her changed, her mother gave up work and became her full time carer. She had to give up school and when at home she was on oxygen and couldn‟t leave the house. The doctors in-formed her parents she would not make it to her 16th birthday. Kylie was aware of her situation all along and consulted when making decisions. At the age of 15 she was put on the transplant waiting list. At 17 she suffered a stroke, unrelated to her illness and she missed out on the first opportunity to have a double lung transplant. Her doctors said there was no hope for her and she was put on morphine to deal with the pain. As a result of being in hospital most of her life, she watched eleven of her friends die. In February 2005 Kylie received a double lung transplant. Her recovery was abnormally long because her body was so deteriorated. After 10 weeks in hospital she went home and slowly recovered.

Currently, Kylie is studying to become a youth worker (Meadowbank TAFE). She is also a peer‟s leader for sick kids who are going through similar experiences. She is also writing a book based on her journals. Even though she experiences pain on a daily basis and is on medica-tion for life, she is looking forwards to the future she thought she would never have. The Shack Youth Outreach is currently raising money to give Kylie a 21st birthday party, to celebrate the start of her new life.
