A true cultural stalwart>> ‘We need a woman president’Nomagugu Ngobese>>[email protected]

As part of celebrating Wom-en’s Month NOMPENDULONGUBANE spoke to

staunch cultural advocate,Nomagugu Ngobese, founder of theNomkhubulwane Institute.

WHEN one talks of Nomkhubul-wane Institute or virginity testing, there is one name that instantly

comes to mind, and that isNomagugu Ngobese.

She is well known for herinvolvement in cultural activitiesand is part and parcel of organ-ising a trip to the annual UM-khosi Womhlanga/Reed Danceat Enyokeni Royal Palace inKwaNongoma.

Her involvement in cul-tural activities and up-lifting women startedin 1982 at her homein Impendle. Shegathered thewomen in thearea andsharpenedtheir cookingskills.

Thosewomensaw aneed for a

crèche in Nguga, banded togetherand from their own pockets theysucceeded in building one.

Ngobese’s daughter, who wasborn in 1982 attended that crèche.

“In 1995, I introduced the reli-gion of Nomkhubulwane [a celebra-tion of Mother Earth].

“It took some time for people tounderstand it.

“With this I was not trying to doany harm but I was building thenation.

“I was seeing a lot of negligenceon the part of the people.

“Girls were falling pregnant. They were having kids out of wed-lock. I started doing research aboutthe Nomkhubulwane religion.

“That is when I grew and under-stood some of the things in our cul-ture,” she said.

She said government is tryingits best to honour women, but that

this is not enough until we have awoman president.

“Women are managers by na-ture. We need a woman as presi-dent of the country.

“Once we see that, then the gov-ernment would have done itsbest.

“What has been done wrong isthat men have been put on top ofeverything.

“Some of them are not evenman enough to act responsibly.

“I’m not saying that all of themen are irresponsible; there are afew that are good,” she said.

Ngobese said she is happy thatAugust is officially women’s month.

“It feels good, although we mustbe practical about this.

“I believe that every day shouldbe women’s day.

“Not everything can be done inone month,” she said.

ANEWco-operativeAct aimed at allow-ing ‘effective functioning’ of co-opera-tives is soon to be implemented, with

theestablishmentofaco-optrainingacademyin the pipeline.

Speaking at the official handing over ofseven sewingmachines toMandingozeli Tex-tile Co-operative in Railway Street last week, chairperson of South African National ApexCo-operative (Sanaco), Mandla Ngcobo said:“Witheffect to thismonth,a new co-operativeamendment Act was passed by PresidentJacob Zuma, allowing the re-emergence ofco-operatives as vehicles of poverty eradica-tion through job creation.

“Therewillbe an academy speciallyestab-lished to ensure compliance and thesustain-ability of co-ops. We want to be given tradeinvestment opportunities, and open our ownSouth African factories”.

In February this year, the co-op received17 sewing machines from the Department ofTrade and Industry (DTI) in partnership withthe Department of Economic Developmentand Msunduzi municipality.

This time around, five more machineswere donated by the premier’s office as awomen’smonth gift. The organization, whichconsists of seven women and two men, aimsto create 50 job opportunities by the end ofthis year.

KwaZulu-Natal first ladyDrMayMkhizesaid:“Mostof theseorganisationsfall apart because people are not working to-gether. Co-ops must fight to produce ourownSouthAfricanproducts, insteadofrelyingon other countries.”

THE death of the most loved jurist in South Africa’snew dispensation attracted many comments thatconfirmed how Chief Justice Pius Nkonzo Langa impacted lives.

From the beginning of his legal career in the ruraltown within our district, his work ethic and giftednesshas seen his jurisprudence celebrated even beyondthe borders of this country.

The story of his history continues to inspire manyyoung people who would otherwise see themselvesbound by background and poverty.

Many SouthAfricans were first introduced to Langain 1994 when he was appointed as one of the firstjudges of colour.

Those who had been on the wrong side of theapartheid laws probably knew him prior to that. Hewas a sought after defence lawyer for many politicalprisoners and an already respected leader in manyprogressive formations.

No accurate history of this great son of our nationwill ever fail to highlight the fact that he experienced a huge delay in his youth to progress careerwise or academically.

Langa came from a working class family so he didnot have the privilege of an uninterrupted secondary school education.

At some point he landed a messenger job and a jobin a shirt factory. Unlike some young people who

found themselves in similar situations, he refused tolet go of his dream to be a professional in spite of thesituation that he was facing.

His first job in the legal system was that of courtinterpreter. While many of his peers had a sense ofhaving arrived, he was not satisfied and thereforeregistered for a B Juris Degree with a distance learning university.

His attainment of this qualification, purely bycorrespondence, opened doors for him to be promoted to become a prosecutor and later a magistrate.

He also studied for the Bachelor of Law Degree inthe same university to prepare for a career as alawyer.

His accolades as an attorney, advocate and seniorcounsel are well documented.

As he was laid to rest, Langa remains an epitomeof what a person with a combination of selfdetermination and attitude of lifelong learning canachieve.

He carried his responsibilities in all his capacitieswith dignity, commitment and discipline that remained his trademark throughout his career.

For many of us who sometimes work with youngpeople who experience delays in their journeys tosuccess, Langa’s story will always be a testimony ofhow a man was able to overcome limitations, engage in a process of self–development and die asa worldrenowned player in his field.

It is hoped that many young people experiencingsimilar frustrations gain the courage to pick up thespear and work their way to lead our nation.

I FIND it difficult to understand asituation whereby an ambulance iscalled at 7:45am up until 11:30am andstill does not respond.

When I recalled the ambulanceservices I was told that there are onlythree ambulances operating in ourVulindlela area.

It is a shocking and disappointingstatement that such an area with alarge population is serviced so poorly.

I have no doubt that if it was a predominantly white suburb this wouldnot have happened.

It is disappointing that we are notreaping the fruits of our freedom. Itwill be very much appreciated if suchproblems can be rectified with immediate effect as we are about to embark on the 2014 elections.

The department of health needsto address lack of staff and resourcesurgently.

A powerful voice guiding KZN’s widowsSIMPHIWE MKHIZE

“NOTHING succeeds like success,”so goes the English saying. Thisis the most appropriate way of

describing the consequences of the struggle of a citybased empowerment and lobby 32 000member strong organisationfor widows in KwaZuluNatal, known asIzwi Labafelokazi (Voice of the Widows).

During the three years of its operation, the provincial organisation h as emergedas a force to reckon with in the area of defending and promoting the rights and interests of women and mothers, most ofwhom become struggling single parentswhen their spouses pass on.

Having had the privilege of followingthe spectacular growth of this highly useful organisation over a period of time as adevelopmental journalist, I can say without a measure of a doubt that Izwi Labafelokazi is indeed a widow’s dreamcome true.

One of the organisation’s founders andleading pioneers is a middleaged wellspoken woman called Ntombintombi Mtshare whose compassion, selfsacrificeand hard work have earned her the muchdeserved role of heading this nonprofit

making organisation as chairperson.Mtshare, who comes from Imbali Unit

1, personifies the struggle of the socioeconomic emancipation of the womanfolk in the land.

Recently, she granted me an exclusiveinterview about the latest successes ofthis provincial formation. She has this story to tell:

“It did not come overnight, but after along time of working hard and knockingon doors, the government departmentsunder the honorable Premier, Dr ZweliMkhize, as well as other national government structures, are now opening doorsfor widows and enabling the organisationto defend and protect the interests ofwidows,” says Mtshare.

“We would not be where we are todayif it was not for the provincial Departmentof Education, which is led by our honorable MEC Mr Senzo Mchunu – his department’s school nutrition programme hasemployed a number of our members tosupply food for many schools,” she said.

“Izwi Labafelokazi has 16 cooperativesand each one has between five to eightmembers, which means we have an average of 85 families that are now directlybenefiting from the provincial Education

Department’s School Nutrition programme.

“We now also get a yearly grant ofR350 000 that the organisation receivesfrom the national Department of Trade

and Industries (IDT) to enable the variouscooperatives our organisation has to workwell, and these include clothing washingand ironing businesses, as well as agriculturalrelated projects like poultry and others,” said Mtshare.

“The organisation also refers cases ofold widowed women as well as those thatare sickly as a result of Aidsrelated illnesses, to the Department of Social Development so that they can get social grants.

We are of late engaged in an ongoingconsultation process with the MEC of thatprovincial department, Mrs Weziwe Thusi.

She agrees with us that vulnerablewomen like widows deserve the supportof her department in order to empowerthem economically so that they are ableto fend for themselves and their families.

“We have the support of the South African Women in Construction (Sawec) whohave a widows’ programme which has engaged 40 of our members’ childrenthrough Sita where they are given trainingand a stipend of R1 500 over a period of1 to 3 years.

“Through these programs the messageis clear to the widow – that a widow cannot sit there and feel sorry for herself justbecause her husband has died.

The widow must stand up and usewhatever resources and opportunities areavailable, including her children, in order torise beyond the challenges that came asa result of losing the regular income thather husband provided for her family,”Mthsare said.

Continued Mtshare, “There are varioustypes of widows – there are widows whoinherit wealth from their husbands andthose that are employed.

“But there are also those that are leftwith nothing and they are unemployed, and these happen to be in the majority. Thelatter are left alone to suffer when theirhusbands pass away.

“A widow has many challenges – frombeing overtaxed her husband’s work pension, to losing her house to the bank if shecannot pay for it or opportunists who takeadvantage of her as a widow”.

She said that the widow is more thanlikely to end up being a poor and struggling single parent after the death of herspouse.

Izwi Labafelokazi head office is at 15Fallwey Street, 7th Floor Gallwey Houseand can be contacted on 033 342 7149.

THE match between South Africanformer footballers and their Italiancounterparts confirmed that previousfootballers were not better than thepresent generation.

Although, the Italians were mucholder than our team, they proved to befitter and cleverer. We hope that thisuselessdebate isaclosedchapternow.Football in South Africa has definitelyimproved compared to 30-40 yearsago.Thepresentgeneration isunfairly

compared to their peers across theworld.

In fact it was embarrassing to seemanyofourguysbeingobese.Whatex-ample are we setting for the youngplayers?A lotof education isneeded toimprovesportsingeneral.Peopleneedto learn that sports do not end the dayyou retire from professional football.Exercise and proper diet should be alifestyle for those involved as coachesand managers. Surely, as adults youcannotbeasfitandtrimasayoungper-son.

The “legends” football matchagainst theItaliansgaveaclearpictureofSouthAfricanfootball.Ithinkformerfootballers should do more than justtalking.WeareallpartofSouthAfricanFootballAssociation.Therealityisthatmanyofourguysplayedfootballunderthe era of kick and rush coupled withtricks done randomly.

Technical-tacticalunderstanding isstill a challenge. We need to humbleourselves and undergo training to im-prove our coaching skills.

Black football coaches inparticularneed tobeabitmoredisciplined inourcountry. We do not take the job of foot-

ball coaching seriously. It is not goodfor the industry that football coachesareobese. I thinkmanyof our guysarecapable; we just need to improve ourprofessionalism. Back to reality for Bafana Bafana

IT’Snowbacktoreal lifeandtooffi-cial fixtures for Bafana Bafana.

The time to play a series offriendlies has now ended and headcoachGordon Igesundandhis troopsneed to concentrate on the upcominggames and make sure that the coun-try qualifies for 2014 Brazil WorldCup.

Last week, the SA senior nationalside played two quality internationalfriendlies against the reigning Afri-canChampions,NigeriaandBurkinaFaso respectively during a series ofsporting events to honour formerPresident Nelson Mandela.

The SA outfit went down 2-0againsttheNigerianslastWednesdaybuttheymanagedtobouncebackandwon 2-0 against Burkina Faso.

The reality is Bafana Bafana willfaceBotswananextmonth,7Septem-ber, at Moses Mabhida Stadium in amust-win World Cup qualifying en-counter. Also the tricky situation is,SouthAfricanswill have to pray hardandhopeforthebestbecausethetick-et toBrazil isno longer in theirhands.

Igesund has agreed that thefriendlies were tough, quality and agood exercise, but his forwards needtoapplysome“urgency”infrontofthegoalmouth.

“Sometimes I feel we need to bemore quicker around that area be-cause only goals win matches.”

He says it was evident in their re-cent international friendlies.

“I thoughtwewereable tobounceback brilliantly against Burkina Fasoon Saturday. We dominated but stillfailed to use most of the chances wecreated.Maybemyplayerswerea lit-tle bit too patient, but if you createchances and don’t score it can be aconcern,” said the coach.

He is hoping that all players in hiswish listwill beavailableorwill beal-lowedbythecircumstances tobepartof the squad.

For the past three weeks it hasbeen difficult for Igesund as most

players pulled out for different rea-sons, suchas injuriesandCaf fixturesfor teams like Orlando Pirates.

“We are almost used to workingwith obstacles every time we call upplayers for the national team.Weun-derstand there’s good reason for thatbutwehopeforgoodpreparationsforBotswana game because it’s the Fifa

available” against Botswana and hislatest pick includes foreign-basedplayers and local players.

If the home side can keep the heat, steamand pressurise the visitors all the way, a winwill be easily secured.
