THE Quiet Revolution isgaining momentum – and itdoesn’t mean turning downthe volume on your in-carhi-fi system.
That’s because the sound ofsilence auto maker Lexus refers to,endorsed on screen by pop superstarKylie, is something completelydifferent.
It is the centrepiece of theJapanese company’s plan to attractyounger customers and the ‘quiet’bit refers to the qualities of itsgateway model, the CT 200h.
This is the first full hybrid car tobe launched in the premiumcompact arena and, given that it isup against conventionally poweredrivals like the BMW 1-Series, it hasto be an exceptional performer.
Power comes via a 1.8-litre petrolengine combined with a 60kW
electric motor, between themgenerating 134bhp of punch.
The figures – fantastic fueleconomy of a Combined 68.9 milesper gallon, okay acceleration, lowemissions and zero road tax –certainly stack up, so the smarttouches are what will make thedifference.
In the case of the CT 200h thereare plenty. Push the start button,
engage the CVT gearbox and theLexus pulls silently away on electricpower with little more than awhisper.
And it can stay that way for morethan a mile provided you don’t goabove the 28mph limit at which thepetrol engine cuts in – and out againwhen you come to a halt in trafficthanks to the Start/Stop system.
In normal driving conditions the
power switches automaticallybetween the engine and motor foroptimum efficiency, but there arealso Eco and Sport settings selectedvia a rotary knob that alter throttleresponse and steering.
The dashboard illuminationchanges too, blue turning to redwhen in Sport mode and the hybridsystem indicator becoming a revcounter.
But then attention to detail is ahallmark of this car. The fit andfinish is typically Lexus, soundinsulation excellent, comfortassured – in the test car’s case witha soft fawn leatherette upholstery –and interior space sufficient for five.
The floating sat-nav mouse is likethe controller for a computer gameand the electric windows even slowdown for the last few inches tominimise the sound of them closing.
My only criticism would be thatthe car could do with a bit morepunch. That said, thisenvironmentally friendly hatchback– you don’t pay any road tax –challenges you to drive moreefficiently.
It has loads of kit even in entrygrade SE-I spec, is attractively styledand both different and responsibleenough to attract the audienceLexus strives for – just like Kylie.

The initial plan was to build 400cars but the quattro became sosought-after that more than 11,000had been sold by the time the modelfinished production in 1991.
The original’s success led to otherderivatives and, to date, some 3.5million quattro models have beensold.
These days themarque’s highestperformancemodels carry theRS prefix, whichstands for racingsport, and arecreated by Audi’sprivatesubsidiaryQuattro GmbH.
Latest additionto thatthoroughbredstable is the RS 3Sportbackquattro, and hot hatch fans canexpect practicality with a knockoutpunch from this rather understatedmuscle machine when it hits thestreets next month.
We’re talking the sort of wallopyou would expect from a supercar,but at a fraction of the price.
This is the first time Audi has
pinned the RS badge on a compactclass model and the lucky few –only 500 cars have been allocated tothe UK, and all have been sold inadvance – who shell out the £39,930tab are certainly in for a treat.
Under the bonnet is the same
2.5-litre five-cylinder turbochargedengine found in the fiery TT RSsports coupe. It delivers a hefty335bhp and is capable of blasting to62mph in just 4.6 seconds and on toan electronically limited 155mph.
In addition to the quattroall-wheel drive is a seven-speed Stronic transmission with steeringwheel-mounted paddle shifts,though the twin-clutch gearbox is soslick that you rarely need use them.
I drove the RS 3 on a four-hourroute from the picturesque lakesidetown of Velden through theNockberge mountain range, takingin that historic Audi proving
ground en route.It confirmed that prospective
owners are getting serious value formoney in a car that combineseveryday practicality with amplespace for four, reasonable luggagecapacity and the facility to lowerthe rear seats for extra flexibility.
Savage performance and glue-likegrip is allied to a bass-heavy enginenote made to sound all the better bypressing the Sport button, whichopens a sound flap in the exhaustand sharpens the throttle response.
There’s the potential for anaverage 31 miles per gallon,something made possible through a
combination of a system thatrecovers energy as the cardecelerates and the use of lightmaterials like carbonfibre-reinforced plastic. It also helpskeep CO2 output down to 212g/km.
Audi’s high performanceengineers have been hard at workwith this car, which has a 25mmlower chassis than the standard A3Sportback, a wider track and isshod with 19-inch alloy wheels.,
Standard wheel finish is atitanium look, but a black finishwith red rim inserts is available asan option – eyecatching andsomething most buyers will go for.

When the producers of thetime-travelling TV cop showAshes to Ashes chose to makean early quattro one of the stars– spawning detective GeneHunt’s catchphrase “Fire up the
quattro!” - they put the spotlightback on a car that revolutionisedmotorsport in the 1980s.
To make the link even clearer,Audi launched the UK model ofthe RS3 in Austria on the sameroads where the original quattro– known as the Ur-quattro, fromthe German word for original orancestral – was first shown to theAudi board back in 1978.
The prototypefour-wheel-drive system madeshort work of the slippery winterconditions and the impressed
board members dulycommissioned the car to go intoproduction.
It went on sale in 1980 andbesides being a hit as a road car,became the first car to takeadvantage of a change in worldrally championship rules thatallowed four-wheel-drive for thefirst time. In doing so, it rewrotemotorsport history, withfour-wheel-drive becomingessential for any championshipwinning car thereafter.
Since that first model, thequattro name - like the RS badge
- has graced the rear of some ofAudi’s most exciting models.
From cars like the 1993 AvantRS2, which could acceleratefrom 0-30mph quicker than aMcLaren F1, to the V10-poweredRS6 of 2008 and the V8 RS5 of2010, quattro transmission hasbeen a key part of Audi’sperformance heritage.
Where BMW sets great storeby its rear-wheel-drive chassis,Audi believes that four-wheeldrive provides a better solutionto real world performancedriving problems.
