As always, I am indebted to David Elkins for the many services he provides to
our Department as the local statistical resource, specialized psychometrician,
our Department’s IRB representative extraordinaire and, especially, as the
keeper of our Department’s webpages. In this latter capacity, David flatters me
with the continued opportunity he provides me to welcome everyone to our
updated newsletter! We are thriving: our clinical care is superb; our trainees are
enthused and, not surprisingly, exceeding very ambitious expectations for
learning and clinical competence; and our scholarly contributions are having a
deservedly high impact. One recent scholarly development, among many that
can be selected, is the Special Issue of Progress in NeuroPsychopharmacology and
Biological Psychiatry that was Guest Edited by, and included contributions from,
members of our Department; the issue was devoted to Autism Spectrum
Disorders (ASD). Our contributions included a critical review of issues
pertaining to diagnosis, symptom ratings and the design of clinical trials; an
updated review of biological mechanisms underlying deficits in recognizing and
producing facial expressions in persons with ASD; and discussion of
metabotropic functions of the NMDA receptor and role a specific subtype of
this receptor plays in the pathogenesis of ASD. Additionally, Dr. Frank
Castora, a member of the school’s graduate program in biomedical sciences
contributed an article on mitochondrial abnormalities in ASD. Thus, I would
like to acknowledge and thank Drs. Maria Urbano, Nicole Kreiser, Kathrin
Hartmann, and Jennifer Flaherty and Ms. Jessica A. Burket, a PhD candidate in
the graduate program of biomedical sciences, for their impressive
achievements. This Special Issue highlights the national impact and
prominence of our faculty and Autism Spectrum Disorders Program!
Sincerely, Stephen I. Deutsch, M.D., Ph.D. Anne Armistead Robinson Endowed Chair in Psychiatry Professor and Chairman, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
