Early PerceptionWhen I first began this project, I wanted to do something that would allow me to work with people who had disabilities, primarily Special Olympics. With my busy schedule, I was unable to fulfill their needs. So, I began looking for something that I could do. I found this group and thought WOW, I’d love to help the troops and surprise them with a care package so they know they are appreciated.
Introduction to Setting
o I collected the majority of the cans from a local golf course. They even allowed me to place a box behind the bar where cans were collected as well as cans that were collected outside. I also collected cans from my neighbors who were very excited to help with this project. We also had some organizations such as Target and Publix donate gift cards to purchase items.
Site/Community Demographics
Personal Demographicso This a picture of
myself. I am married to my high school sweet heart and together we have an amazing 4 year old little boy. I am the first in my family to graduate college and I am very thrilled to be obtaining my B.S. in education in the near future.
Engagement Activities
o Our group decided to collect cans from around
the community and bring them to a recyc ling center
to rais e money for our. troops This money would
help us purchas e items that many troops would like or need. We talked
weekly via e-mail and discussed how much we had collected and what our next steps were.
oThere was also a flyer made that explained what we were doing and why.
Participant Demographicso With the amount of supplies/money we all raised, I
would assume that about 10-20 persons from the military were served.
o Amongst our group, 5 students were between 22 and 25 years of age. There were also 3 students in their 30’s.
o All students were fluent in English and 3 of them could speak some Spanish.
o 4 of the group participants were Caucasian. There were 2 African American students and 2 were Hispanic.
Reflection of your Experience
What I will take with me from this experience is that together we can accomplish goals. Yes, it does take time and effort, but the rewards at the end are what makes it all worth while.
