    ObTAINING yOUR VISA

    Once you have received your ofcial

    U o R letter o acceptance rom International

    Admissions, begin the process o applying

    or a Study Permit and a Canadian Temporary

    Resident Visa (i needed) at the closestCanadian Embassy or Consulate http://w01.

    international.gc.ca/cra-rce/index.aspx. Apply

    early! It can take several weeks, sometimes

    months, to process your application.

    Once your application is approved, you

    will be issued a letter o introduction as

    confrmation o approval. Bring this letter with

    you to your frst port o entry into Canadaand present it to the Immigration Ofcial.

    Your Study Permit will be issued at this time.

    Visit the Canadian Immigration and

    Citizenship (CIC) website at www.cic.gc.ca

    or more inormation on the requirements and

    details o obtaining your Study Permit & Visa.

    TRAVEL PREPARATION

    Accommodation

    You will need to arrange accommodations or

    the duration o your studies. The U o R has

    our excellent residence options located on

    campus. The Residence Services website atwww.uregina.ca/residences provides all the

    inormation you need such as applications

    and residence ees. See the residences

    Temporary accommodation is available to

    students who arrive in Regina beore theresidence move-in date. Please contact

    during the scheduled Resident Move-in-Week

    ENTERING CANADA

    Customs Securit

    Beore you land at your frst Canadian port o

    entry, you will be asked to fll out a Customs

    Declaration orm or declaring any items that

    you are bringing into Canada, including whatis in your checked luggage. You may bring all

    personal belongings into Canada

    duty-ree. We recommend that you keep a list

    o those items along with their approximate

    values. For more inormation on entering

    Canada, please reer to Canadian Border

    When you arrive, your passport and Visa

    will be examined by a Canadian Immigration

    Ofcer. Your Study Permit will be issued at

    this time. Note that i you carry more than

    $10,000 Canadian dollars when entering

    Canada, you will be required to report this to

    Canadian Customs Ofcials. Failure to do so

    may result in charges and/or fnes.

    Understanding the rules o academic honesty

    is extremely important as they are vital parts

    o the Canadian higher education system.

    CAMPUS SERVICES

    ID Card

    Every U o R student needs a student

    identifcation (ID) card. Having a Student ID is

    mandatory or access to the Library, Fitness

    and Health Centre, and or examination andcampus security purposes.

    To obtain your student ID card, simply

    present your passport at the Registrars

    Ofce, ater your initial course registration.

    User ID

    Every U o R student is provided with

    a unique user ID to access computers

    throughout the campus. This unique user ID

    will also grant you access to your UR email

    account and UR Sel-Service.

    The initial set-up process is quite simple.

    COMPUTER SERVICES

    Computers are available on campus or

    the convenience o every student. Student

    computers are located in the John Archer

    COUNSELLING SERVICES

    Counselling Services address the concerns

    o all members o the University community,especially students who may encounter

    Campus Security provides 24-hour service

    HEALTH INSURANCE

    All international students with study permits

    attending the U o R or longer than 6

    months are entitled to Saskatchewan

    Health Services. To learn more about health

    coverage policies and benefts, go to http://

    ursu_health_plan.

    The Student Services & Study Abroad Ofce

    oers sessions throughout the semester

    to assist you in completing your application

    to obtain a Saskatchewan Provincial Health

    Card. Exchange students: I your program

    is less than six months and you have not

    applied or a Study Permit, you are not

    eligible or Saskatchewan Health Services.

    Consequently, you must apply or health

    insurance in your country o residence prior

    to departure.

    GLObAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

    UR International Global Leadership Program

    is a voluntary, sel-directed program and

    is open to all U o R undergraduate and

    graduate students. The program will provide

    a value-added experience to your academic

    studies and widen your horizons.

    MAINTAINING yOUR IMMIGRATIONSTATUS AND EMPLOyMENT

    Full-Time Student Status

    As an undergraduate international student,

    you must remain a ull-time student or at

    least two semesters during an academicyear. Doctoral students must be ull-time in

    each semester; master students must be

    ull-time in the Fall and Winter semesters,

    and at least part-time in the Spring/Summer

    semester. Failure to enrol as a ull -time

    student is a violation o your immigration

    status. To be a ull-time undergraduate

    student, you need to take at least 9 class

    credits during both the Fall and Winter

    semesters. This means you must be

    registered or at least three classes each Fall

    and Winter semester.

    Valid Documents

    To maintain your immigration status, you

    must ensure that your passport and Study

    Permit remain valid throughout your stay in

    Canada. You must keep your passport valid

    at all times. I both your Study Permit and

    passport are soon to expire, contact the

    Student Services & Study Abroad Ofce to

    assist you with the renewal process.

    Extension o Stud Permit or Changing

    the Conditions

    Always careully read the expiration dates,

    conditions, and remarks on your immigration

    documents. I you need to extend yourStudy Permit or change the conditions,

    apply as soon as possible. We advise you to

    avoid travelling outside Canada while your

    documents are being processed.

    You should apply to renew the status o your

    immigration documents at least 90 days prior

    to expiration since this renewal process can

    take up to 90 days. I you require assistancewith this application process, contact our Lie

    Skills Advisors.

    Be aware that ailure to renew your

    immigration documents will result in fnes

    and/or deportation.

    Temporar Resident Visa

    There are two types o Temporary Resident

    Visas: (1) a single-entry visa, and (2) a

    multiple-entry visa. Whether single or multiple-

    entry, a Temporary Resident Visa is valid or

    a defned period o time. You cannot use a

    visa ater its expiration date. To renew your

    Temporary Resident Visa while you are in

    Canada, contact the Student Services &

    Study Abroad Ofce or urther assistance.

    Wor Permit and Student Emploment

    Do not work without Work Authorization.

    International students are permitted to

    work outside o the U o R only with a valid

    O-Campus Work Permit (OCWP). Working

    without authorization is a deportable oence.

    Woring on Campus

    International students with a valid Study

    Permit do not require an o-campus work

    permit to work on campus.

    You can look or part-time employment

    on campus as long as you are a ull-timestudent in a degree or diploma program and

    hold a valid Study Permit. Beore you seek

    employment, make sure that you meet all the

    requirements.

    On-campus employment is defned as work

    in acilities owned, leased, or rented by the U

    o R. Your employer may be the University, astudent organization, or a private contractor

    operating within the boundaries o the

    campus. I this does not apply, you must

    obtain an O-Campus Work Permit.

    O-Campus Wor Permit

    International students can apply or an

    O-Campus Work Permit (OCWP) i they

    have attended a Canadian post-secondary

    institution ull-time and or at least six o the

    last 12 months beore the date o application

    i they meet all requirements.

    Post-Graduation Wor Permit

    The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

    allows you to gain valuable Canadian work

    experience ater you have completed your

    studies in Canada. This may also assist you

    i you wish to apply to become a permanent

    resident o Canada.

    To qualiy, you must have graduated rom a

    public or private post-secondary institution

    that grants degrees recognized by the

    province or territory.

    You must apply or a Post-Graduation Work

    Permit within 90 days o receiving written

    confrmation rom the U o R that you have

    met the requirements or completing your

    academic program. Please visit our website

    Co-op Wor Permit

    Students are encouraged to pursue work

    experience while studying. International

    students can join the Co-operative Education

    and Internships Program and apply or a Co-

    op Work Permit (COWP) to gain related work

    Social Insurance Numer

    A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a number

    issued in Canada to administer various

    government programs. You are required to

    have a SIN to work in Canada.

    Permit and an O-Campus Work Permit, or an

    Regina, the capital city o Saskatchewan,

    is located in the southern portion o the

    province o Saskatchewan. The city is

    home to the largest Legislative Building in

    Canada and hosts the world renowned Royal

    Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Training

    Academy and Heritage Centre.In the heart o the city, you will fnd Wascana

    Centre, a 2,300-acre urban park boasting

    a pristine view o the Saskatchewan

    Legislature along with a marina, walking

    paths, bird-watching opportunities, tennis

    courts, and picnic and BBQ sites. The park

    also accommodates the Saskatchewan

    Science Centre and Kramer IMAX Theatre,the MacKenzie Art Gallery, and the Royal

    Opening a ban AccountWe suggest that you open a bank account

    as soon as possible ater arriving in

    Regina. The Student Services & Study

    Abroad Ofce make appointments and take

    new international students to Scotiabank

    branches to open new bank accounts. It is

    highly recommended that you contact our

    ofce or this service.

    When in the bank, you will be ask to present

    your passport, Study Permit, and current

    local address and contact inormation.

    Currenc Exchange

    Currency exchange services can be ound

    at the airport and most fnancial institutions

    in Regina. Major credit cards (American

    Express, MasterCard and VISA) are also

    widely accepted as well as Travellers

    Cheques; however, a ee is charged or

    cheque transactions.

    Transerring Funds

    Canadian banks accept wire transers rom

    other banks. You can obtain a bank drat or

    the amount that you wish to transer and

    bring it with you to Canada. Remember to

    ask how long the transer will take and howmuch it will cost. Always keep a copy o all

    transaction records or uture reerence.

    Getting to know Canadian Currenc

    Canadas currency is the Canadian dollar

    (CAN$). One dollar equals 100 cents.

    Canadian coins are available in denominations

    o 1 cent (penny); 5 cents (nickel);10 cents (dime); 25 cents (quarter); $1.

    (loonie) and $2. (toonie).

    Paper bills are available in denominations o

    $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100.

    In Canada, you do not need to carry

    excessive amounts o cash because banking

    cards are widely accepted. With a bank

    card, you can also access automated teller

    machines (ATM) or cash withdrawals.

    Regina has many grocery-store choices

    including Extra Foods, Wal-Mart, Superstore,

    Saeway and Sobeys. These are all

    conveniently located near the university.

    DRIVING IN SASkATCHEWAN

    All drivers in Saskatchewan must have a valid

    drivers licence. I you have a valid drivers

    licence rom your home country or a valid

    international drivers licence, you are allowedto drive as long as you are a registered

    international student at the U o R. You must

    carry your drivers licence, U o R student ID

    card, and a copy o your Study Permit when

    driving.

    CLIMATE AND CLOTHING

    Located in the southeast region o theprovince o Saskatchewan, Regina is the

    sunniest capital city in Canada. The city is

    noted or its clear, sunny days, recording an

    average o 2,365 sunshine hours each year.

    acilities. Hours o operation are 7:30 a.m.
