Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
(Readings: Ecclesiastes 1:2, 2: 21-23 — Colossians 3:1-11 — Luke 12:13-21 ) Think of What is Above — All the readings today caution us against greed and trusting in our posses-sions. St. Paul succinctly summarizes these thoughts : “Think of what is above, not of what is on earth.” And yet, half of the message of Our Lady of La Salette is very much concerned with the things of earth: worm-eaten walnuts, rotting grapes, blighted, but potentially abundant, wheat and potatoes and, worst of
all, the death of young children. She could hardly tell her people not to worry about these things. She wept with them. What mattered to them mattered to her. These things are not vanity. At the same time, she points out her people’s failure to think of what is above. Long before the famine began, they appear to
have had little use for God. Religion had become the domain of “a few elderly women.” In today’s Psalm we pray, “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart.” This means living in
the presence of God, not in constant fear of death. Two chapters after the “vanity of vanities” in Ecclesias-tes, we read that there is “A time to give birth, and a time to die.” The Beautiful Lady knows that, between birth and death, there is plenty in life to be afraid of; but, close to her, we need no longer be afraid. Under her guidance, we can achieve wisdom of heart. And yet, it is no contradiction to say she will teach us the fear of the Lord. Sirach 1:12 is one of three verses in the Bible that tell us, “The beginning of wisdom is
fear of the Lord.” But read the whole chapter, and you will learn that fear of the Lord is also wisdom’s full-ness, garland, and root; that it “warms the heart, giving gladness and joy and length of days;” it is “glory and splendor, gladness and a festive crown.” What could be more desirable? The Beautiful Lady’s first words, “Come closer, my children, don’t be afraid,” set the tone for everything that follows. As we read
each portion of the message, however distressing, we should continue to hear, “Don’t be afraid... don’t be afraid...” This will help us think calmly and peacefully of what is above.

Pensar en las Cosas de Arriba
Decimo‐octavo Domingo Ordinario
Eclesiastés 1:2, y 2:21‐23; Colosenses 3:1‐11; Lucas 12:13‐21
Todas las lecturas de hoy nos advierten acerca de la avaricia y la confianza en nuestras
posesiones. San Pablo resume de manera sucinta estos pensamientos: “Tengan el pen‐
samiento puesto en las cosas celes ales y no en las de la erra”.
Y con todo, la mitad del mensaje de Nuestra Señora de La Sale e ene mucho que ver
con las cosas de la erra: nueces carcomidas, uvas podridas, trigo y papas arruinados o potencialmente
abundantes y, lo peor de todo, la muerte de los niños pequeños.
Di cilmente ella hubiera podido decirle a su pueblo que no se preocupara por esas cosas. Ella lloró con ellos.
Lo que era importante para ellos lo era para ella. Aquellas cosas no eran superficiales.
Aun así, ella enfa za que el error de su pueblo está en no pensar en las cosas de arriba. Mucho antes de que
comenzara el hambre, pareciera que Dios no era muy necesario en sus vidas. La religión se había conver do
en un asunto de “algunas mujeres ancianas”.
En el Salmo de hoy rezamos: “Enséñanos a calcular nuestros años, para que nuestro corazón alcance la sabi‐
duría”. Esto significa vivir en la presencia de Dios, no en un constante miedo a la muerte. Dos capítulos des‐
pués de la “Vanidad de Vanidades” en Eclesiastés, leemos que hay un “un empo para nacer y un empo
para morir”.
La Bella Señora sabe que, entre el nacimiento y la muerte, la vida está llena de cosas que nos atemorizan;
pero, cerca de ella, no hay porqué tener miedo. Bajo su guía, podemos alcanzar la sabiduría del corazón. Y sí,
no es una contradicción decir que ella nos enseñará el temor del Señor.
Sirácides 1:12 es uno de los tres versículos en la Biblia que nos dice, “El principio de la sabiduría es el temor
del Señor”. Pero si leemos todo el capítulo, sabremos que el temor del Señor es la sabiduría en su plenitud,
la corona, y la raíz; que “deleita el corazón, da gozo, alegría y larga vida”; y es “gloria y mo vo de orgullo, es
gozo y corona de alegría”.
¿Que podría ser más deseable?
Las primeras palabras de la Bella Señora, “Acérquense, hijos míos, no tengan miedo” marcaron el tono de
todo los que dijo después. Conforme leemos cada porción del mensaje, aunque nos cause angus a, debe‐
mos seguir escuchándolo, “No tengan miedo… no tengan miedo…” Hacerlo, nos ayudará a pensar con sereni‐
dad y con paz en las cosas de arriba.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Del 1 al 5 de agosto los capitalinos en El Salvador celebran la fiesta del Salvador del Mundo, cuando recuerdan la Transfigura-ción de Jesús en el Monte Tabor. Como muchas fiestas patronales en Latinoamérica esta semana está llena de carnavales y desfiles. La celebración principal es una procesión religiosa con la imagen de Jesús, el Divino Salvador del mundo. La estatua de Jesús con sus brazos extendidos en bendición es llevada desde la Basílica del Sagrado Corazón hasta la Catedral Metropolitana. Vestida de un rojo que recuerda su pasión, la imagen es cargada sobre los hombros de una veintena de fieles. Al llegar a la catedral la ima-gen patronal es puesta en una torre de más de 20 metros de alto. Eventualmente la estatua re-vestida de blanco aparece de una esfera encima de la torre en medio de gritos, aplausos y can-tos. Esta esfera azul representa el mundo entero, mundo salvado por Cristo.
