The Minist Staff bids farewell to Katie Hodsdon, who ser ed as the Pastoral Associate here at St. James‐St. Leo Catholic Communit for the past 7 years. Katie has decided to retire.
Katie has been a blessing to the staff and to the St. James –St. Leo Parish Communit . While we will miss the day‐to‐day interaction we know that she will not be far away. Katie will continue to ser e the parish as Lector, Eucharistic Minister and will remain on the board of Mission Circle, organizing projects that ser e the under rivileged and marginalized in our midst, something that is near and dear to her hear .
Katie, we wish you the all the best in your retirement and thank you for your years of dedication, enthusiasm, and generous spirit. We pray that you will always be just a phone call away.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION In the Parable of the Rich Fool, Jesus said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” (Lk12:15). Most of the Parables shared by the Lord in Holy Scripture address the issue of possessions and how we treat them, how we use them as a measurement of success. Consistently those who write about the challenges we face in living lives of stewardship point to this same problem. Jesus certainly understood it.
Christ was living in a society that was very different from that we experience today, but that basic difficulty existed then, as it does now. The problem is not that possessions exist, but that they can become the dominant motivation in our lives and how we live them.
The Lord cautions us, as He does in the Parable of the Rich Fool from today’s Gospel, that storing up treasure and possessions means that we may be wealthy in the eyes of society, but not in “what matters to God.” This is one of our ongoing stumbling blocks to being stewards living a Christian life.
Our Holy Father Pope Francis speaks often about this same problem. In a recent homily he said, “True joy does not come from things or from possessing. It is born from the relationship with others; it is born from feeling accepted, understood, and loved, and from accepting, understanding, and loving. It is saying to one another, ‘You are important to me,’ not ‘What you have is important to me.’ Possessions are nothing but an illusion.”

REFLECIÓN DOMINICAL En la parábola del rico insensato, Jesús dijo a la multitud: "Tenga cuidado de evitar toda codicia, porque aunque uno puede ser rico, la vida de uno no consiste en posesiones." (Lc 12:15). La mayoría de las parábolas compartidos por el Señor en la Santa Escritura abordar el tema de las posesiones y cómo los tratamos, cómo los utilizamos como medida del éxito. Constantemente los que escriben acerca de los desafíos que enfrentamos en la vida de la administración punto de vivir a este mismo problema. Jesús ciertamente la entendía.
Cristo estaba viviendo en una sociedad que era muy diferente de lo que experimentamos hoy en día, pero que la dificultad básica existía entonces, como lo hace ahora. El problema no es que existan las posesiones, sino que puede llegar a ser la motivación dominante en nuestras vidas y cómo las vivimos.
El Señor nos advierte, como lo hace en la parábola del rico insensato del Evangelio de hoy, que el almacenamiento de tesoros y posesiones significa que podemos ser ricos a los ojos de la sociedad, pero no en "lo que importa a Dios." Esta es una de nuestros escollos en curso para dejar de preservar una vida cristiana.
Nuestro Santo Padre Francisco habla a menudo sobre este mismo problema. En una homilía reciente, dijo, "La verdadera alegría no viene de las cosas o de poseer. Nace a partir de la relación con los demás; que nace de sentirse aceptado, comprendido y amado, y de aceptar, entender y amar. Se decían unos a otros: "Eres importante para mí", no "Lo que tenemos es importante para mí." Las posesiones son nada más que una ilusión ".

Faith Formation for Children PreK through 8th Grade
Registration Open for 2016‐17 Join us for a joyful and fun‐filled year of learning about our faith, both in the classroom and at our wonderful seasonal events! Registration is open for Sunday religious education classes starting in the fall for PreK through 8th grade. Registration packets are at the church entrance, or contact Pamela Smith at ffc@stjames‐stleo.org.
First Communion for ALL GRADES Preparation for sacraments is part of our 2nd grade Faith Formation classes, but our program warmly welcomes older children seeking sacraments (even baptism) through 8th grade. Contact Pamela Smith at ffc@stjames‐stleo.org.
Share your Time and Talent! Teaching children about the faith is a rewarding and uplifting experience. We have volunteer openings in our Faith Formation program at the primary level. Co‐teaching with a friend or spouse is also an option. Training and curriculum are provided, as well as teen aides in the classroom, and support from a dynamic catechetical team. Prayer Ministry What’s Prayer Ministry ? How blessed we are to have a quarterly healing Mass on the last Wednesday of the month in January, April, July and October to specifically pray with each other for healing that affects us in mind, body, spirit, relationships and numerous daily needs. However, it is important to note that every Mass is a Eucharistic celebration and contains the healing touch of Jesus. At our quarterly Masses, we emphasize Jesus as our divine physician who heals us in various ways and on many levels through the power of the Holy Spirit. “For where two or three are gathered together in My Name, there am I in the midst of them.” (Matt 18:20)
NEED LONG‐SLEEVED SHIRTS FOR FIELD WORKERS The poor migrant workers in Coachella who pick the crops need long‐sleeved men’s and women’s shirts with collars to protect them from the elements. Please donate your clean, gently used shirts by leaving them in the collection box in the back of the church. Thank you so much.
Attention Bridge Players!!
The Saint James Bridge Club meets on the first Friday of the month at the Lomas Santa Fe Country Club. We play 24 hands of bridge and typically have between 36 and 40 players. Lunch is always a treat and who knows, you might be lucky enough to place in the Winner’s Circle! We welcome both women and men to join us for a friendly game of party bridge.

HITTING IT BIG It seems to be commonly accepted nowadays that everyone wants to win the lottery, hit the slots big at the casino, or be a millionaire. This attitude is akin to what the first hearers of the parable of the successful farmer would have thought: Why, of course he’d
want to find a way to preserve his good fortune for the future, to secure for himself a life of leisure, eating, drinking, and merriment. It’s exactly the kind of life that the right ticket, hand of cards, or quiz show answer might bring us today. Being surrounded by this “common wisdom” makes the words of Qoheleth, the psalmist, Paul, and Jesus all that much harder to hear today. Perhaps good fortune will be ours, perhaps it will not be. But if we make that fortune or the quest for it the heart, the very center, of our lives, then we will live to regret it. We will not achieve the future security we pursue, and we will lose the present moment in the chase.
