TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — God appoints Jeremiah as prophet to the nations (Jeremiah 1:4‐5, 17‐19). Psalm — I will sing of your salvation (Psalm 71). Second Reading — Love with its many facets is the most important of the virtues (1 Corinthians 12:31 — 13:13 [13:4‐13]). Gospel — When Jesus claims his salvific mission is for all people, not just the Jews, he is expelled by the enraged members of the Nazarean synagogue (Luke 4:21‐30).

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Often in this space, we tend to focus on the stewardship messages found in the Gospel reading or perhaps the Second Readings, many of which are letters written by St. Paul. However, on this Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time, there is a simple statement in the First Reading from Jeremiah that echoes its strong message to each of us: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.” (Jeremiah 1:5)
As much as we may wish to ignore it, or perhaps just forget it, God knows us in ways we do not even know ourselves. Jeremiah understood that God had called him to be a prophet; he had no choice, and he fulfilled God’s wishes. Scripture speaks to us also nonetheless, as we are reminded in our reading from Jeremiah, the Lord does not just know who we are; He has plans for each of us.
This, of course, is where “free will” comes in. Whether we seek to understand God’s plan for us and whether we choose to pursue it is totally up to us. To try to comprehend that vocation, that role, can be a humbling experience. It is not unrealistic for us to have thoughts of ourselves, which may not reach the level of God’s plans for us; nevertheless, our task as good stewards is to recognize our gifts and to respond to God’s call.

REFLECIÓN DOMINICAL
A menudo, en este espacio, que tienden a concentrarse en los mensajes de custodia que se encuentran en la lectura del Evangelio, o tal vez las segundas lecturas, muchas de las cuales son cartas escritas por St. Paul. Sin embargo, en este Cuarto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario, hay una simple declaración en la primera lectura de Jeremías que se hace eco de su fuerte mensaje a cada uno de nosotros: "Antes que te formase en el vientre te conocí." (Jeremías 1: 5)
Por mucho que podemos desear ignorarlo, o tal vez sólo olvídalo, Dios nos conoce en formas que ni siquiera conocemos a nosotros mismos. Jeremías comprendió que Dios lo había llamado a ser un profeta; que no tenía elección, y él cumplió los deseos de Dios. Escritura nos habla también, no obstante, como nos lo recuerda en nuestra lectura de Jeremías, el Señor no sólo sabe lo que somos; Él tiene planes para cada uno de nosotros.
Esto, por supuesto, es donde el "libre albedrío" entra. Si tratamos de entender el plan de Dios para nosotros y si queremos llevar a cabo, es totalmente de nosotros. Para tratar de comprender esa vocación, ese papel, puede ser una experiencia humillante. No es poco realista para nosotros tener pensamientos de nosotros mismos, que pueden no alcanzar el nivel de los planes de Dios para nosotros; sin embargo, nuestra tarea como buenos administradores es reconocer nuestros dones y para responder a la llamada de Dios.

It’s Tax Time! St. James Church is again sponsoring free income tax assistance for 2015 Federal and California returns. Under the auspices of the AARP Tax‐Aide program, this free tax‐preparation service is available to low‐and middle‐income taxpayers, with the primary focus being on those who are 60 and older. The service will be offered each Saturday morning between the hours of 9am and 1pm from February 6 through April 16. One major change from prior years: appointments will no longer be available by phone. Instead, a first come, first served, walk‐in approach will be in effect.

Next Sunday the Knights of Columbus will be serving the last of our Community Breakfasts in the Parish Hall. Doors open from 8:00am through 11:00am. The full breakfast features golden brown buttermilk pancakes and includes juice, fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, country potatoes, and sausage. We also offer a continental breakfast, which includes toasted bagels, fresh fruit and sweet breads. Coffee, tea and orange juice (until 10:30am) are offered with both breakfast options. The full breakfast runs $7, the continental breakfast is $5, and we offer a combination saver at $10. Children 12 and under are half‐price.
The beneficiaries of the profits from this breakfast will be Bread of Life and St. Leo Mission.
The mobile unit of the San Diego Blood Bank will be at St. James Sunday, February 14, from 7:30 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. to receive blood donations. We have received an email message from the Blood Bank saying that the need for blood is greater than ever throughout the county and state; we urge your participation.
Bringing it close to home, we have had several parishioners whose lives have been saved by blood transfusions, and over the years we’ve been doing it, your donations have saved over 9,000 lives. Remember: people are the only source ‐‐ there is no substitute. And only 3% of Americans ever donate blood. If you've never given blood before, now is the time to start. Let’s give them a big turnout!

Every morning after reading, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me to bring glad tidings to the poor, he has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord” I ask myself this question: “How will I spread the Good News of hope, freedom, healing, forgiveness and justice today?
At the end of the day I read the same passage and ask the question: “How did I spread the Good News of hope, freedom, healing, forgiveness and justice today? Thank you Lord letting me spread your kingdom, for being a part of your Body.”
Thank You…. Words cannot express my gratitude for the truly loving and joyful celebration on the occasion of my 75th birthday. I could not have been better.
