VISION STATEMENT St. Raymond Parish is a family. As disciples of Jesus, we are “children of God” and “brothers and sisters in Christ.” Jesus himself says, “Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother” (Matthew 12:50). We welcome all to belong to our Catholic family and to inherit with us in Christ the mission to preach the Gospel!

MISSION STATEMENT St. Raymond Parish is a community united by our Catholic Faith as disciples of Jesus Christ. We seek communion with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit through ongoing personal and communal conversion to Christ and a deeper commitment to the mission Jesus gives each of us to preach the Gospel. The sacred scriptures and sacraments of the Church sustain us. We dedicate ourselves to Truth and strive to grow in love of God and neighbor through community, prayer, study, and service, as we work by grace to build up in one another and share freely with others the abundance of magnificent gifts God has given.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

One of our very important ministries here at St. Raymond, our Religious Education program, is gearing up for the Fall and is looking for confirmed adults and high school

students to help teach religious education during the coming year (late August-early May). Religious education teachers should be members of the parish, have a love of the Catholic faith, and enjoy being with and teaching children. Volunteer teachers are needed as catechists (teachers), catechist aides, and for sacramental preparation; training and support will be provided. All volunteers must be cleared through the safe environment program of the San Francisco Archdiocese. If you feel called to this ministry/are interested, please contact Amy Jobin at [email protected] or at the parish office at 650-323-1755. Thank you in advance for considering!

enjoy working with children, please consider applying! We would love to have someone from the parish join our team and be a part of this important ministry. Some of the duties of this position will include: keeping track of registrations (online), planning the year-long calendar, weekly communications with parents/families, planning for and getting supplies to catechists for their classes, being present on Sunday

mornings when RE is in session, coordinating First Communion, and working cooperatively with the rest St. Raymond’s staff. This is a part-time paid position (approx. 20 hours/week) and weekend work is involved, primarily on Sunday mornings. AUGUST 8—ST. DOMINIC St. Dominic was born in Caleruega, Castile, Spain, after 1170. First educated by an uncle who was a priest, he was later sent to Palencia to study arts and theology. There, Dominic sold his books to provide for the needs of the victims of a local famine. He then joined the chapter of the regular canons of Osma, under the priorship of Diego de Acebes. Engaged in a demanding form of life, he left the cloister in 1203 or 1204 to accompany Diego, already bishop, to Northern Europe on a diplomatic mission. Crossing the region of Toulouse, he discovered the Albigensian heresy, which then ravaged the South of France. A missionary desire grew in Dominic and he wanted to make Christ known to the pagans.

In 1206, after a second trip to Northern Europe, Diego and Dominic, on their return journey to Spain, meet in Montpellier with the papal legates charged with converting the heretics. They advised them to go on foot, without gold or silver, as “evangelical men”. Diego, sending his luggage back to Osma, set out with Dominic to preach in apostolic poverty. Before November, Diego proposed to the Pope to establish a long-term mission in Languedoc, the south of France. At the end of 1206, he established a “praedicatio” centred in Prouilhe, of which Dominic was the effective leader. It was there, at the foot of the hill of Fanjeaux, that some women converted from Catharism settled to lead a religious life. A few companions joined Dominic and travelled with him through the war-torn region.

In 1215, the group moved to Toulouse to a house provided by Pierre Seilhan. Upon Dominic ’s return from visiting the Lateran council, the small group of preachers adopted the rule of Saint Augustine and the customs of the Premonstratensians. On December 22, 1216, the Pope confirmed the community of Toulouse and, on January 21, 1217, he used the name “preachers“ to designate the vocation of the brothers. Dominic’s missionary call was

FAITH FORMATION COMMENTARY BY BASIL THE GREAT

What am I to do? I have not enough room to store my crops. (Luke 12:17)

“The land of a rich man produced abundant harvests, and he thought to himself: ‘What am I to do? I will pull down my barns, and build larger ones.’”

Now why did that land bear so well, when it belonged to a man who would make no good use of its fertility? It was to show more clearly the forbearance of God, whose kindness extends even to such people as this. “He sends rain on both the just and the unjust, and makes the sun rise on the wicked and the good alike.” But what do we find in this man? A bitter disposition, hatred of other people, unwillingness to give. This is the return he made to his Benefactor. He forgot that we all share the same nature; he felt no obligation to distribute his surplus to the needy.

His barns were full to bursting point, but still his miserly heart was not satisfied. Year by year he increased his wealth, always adding new crops to the old. The result was a hopeless impasse: greed would not permit him to part with anything he possessed, and yet because he had so much there was no place to store his latest harvest.

And so he was incapable of making a decision and could find no escape from his anxiety. What am I to do? Who would not pity a man so oppressed? His land yields him no profit but only sighs; it brings him no rich returns but only cares and distress and a terrible helplessness. He laments in the same way as the poor do. Is not his cry like that of one hard pressed by poverty? What am I to do? How can I find food and clothing? You who have wealth, recognize who has given you the gifts you have received. Consider yourself, who you are, what has been committed to your charge, from whom you have received it, why you have been preferred to most other people.

You are the servant of the good God, a steward on behalf of your fellow servants. Do not imagine that everything has been provided for your own stomach. Take decisions regarding your property as though it belonged to another.

Possessions give you pleasure for a short time, but then they will slip through your fingers and be gone, and you will be required to give an exact account of them.

“What am I to do?” It would have been so easy to say: “I will feed the hungry, I will open my barns and call in all the poor. I will imitate Joseph in proclaiming my good will toward everyone. I will issue the generous invitation: ‘Let anyone who lacks bread come to me. You shall share, each according to need, in the good things God has given me, just as though you were drawing from a common well’.”

LOW-GLUTEN HOSTS—Low-gluten hosts are available at each Mass. Go to Father’s line during Communion and ask for a low-gluten host. To avoid contamination, please take a host from the low-gluten pyx.

universal. In 1217, he dispersed the small group of his brothers. Some left for Spain, others for Paris, others still supported the nuns of Prouilhe. Dominic himself went to Italy to report to the Pope on his action. He sent brothers to Bologna. Like Paris, this city was an important university centre. Vocations flowed in; the Order adopted laws and organized itself into provinces during the first General Chapters celebrated in 1220 and 1221. Dominic, exhausted, died in Bologna on August 6, 1221, on his return from a preaching mission in Lombardy. Pope Gregory IX canonized him in 1234.

ARCHBISHOP CALLS FOR NOVENA FOR LIFE

BEGINNING SATURDAY AUGUST 3

July 31, 2019

Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone invites all Catholics and all concerned people to join in a Novena (nine days of prayer) to ask the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe--patroness of unborn children--to defeat California State Senate Bill 24 (SB 24).

The nine days of prayer begin August 3. On Sunday, August 11, the Archbishop will celebrate Mass at 9:00 a.m. in the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption to conclude the Novena. The archbishop urges Californians not only to pray but also to contact their lawmakers to express their opposition to SB 24. Time is short. The bill has passed the state Senate, has been approved by all state Assembly committees, and awaits a floor vote when the State Legislature, currently in recess, reconvenes on Monday, August 12.

SB 24 mandates that the health centers at all state colleges and universities in California must provide "abortion by medication techniques." As SB 24 states, "All California public university campuses have on-campus student health centers, but none of these health centers currently provide abortion by medication techniques." The bill can be read in its entirety at https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200SB24

For complete information on SB 24, the Novena, and the California bishops' statewide initiative to defeat the bill, visit the website at https://www.sfarchdiocese.org/stop-sb-24
