Story County Public Health has developed management response plans for public health emergencies. In the event that thousands of residents in Story County would need to be vaccinated or receive prophylactic antibiotics, POD (Point of Dispensing) sites would be activated throughout the county to accomplish such a task. Both medical and non-medical volunteers would be needed to staff the PODs.

An orientation/training for PODs will be held on Wednesday, June 13th from 5:30 to 7:30pm in North A and B at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Public Health staff and RSVP Volunteer Management staff will be on hand to give an overview of the physical layout of the POD, how it would function and the volunteer positions needed. There will also be an opportunity to register as a POD volunteer during the course of the evening.

Public Health cannot sufficiently staff these clinics without the collaborative help of volunteers. Both medical and non-medical volunteers are needed to fill many roles in the POD. With your volunteer assistance, preventative medical treatment will be provided for your family, friends, and neighborhood in the most efficient manner possible during a public health emergency.

If you are interested in volunteering your time in this way in the event of a public health emergency and would like to attend this orientation/training, please contact Treasa Ferrari at 515.233.7550 or [email protected], or Sherry Zook at 515.233.7510 or [email protected].

A little of this...Thank yous, classifieds, wellness tips and sometimes more!

on the way to wellness

Prepare, but don’t fretIt’s stressful planning a vacation and stress can compromise your immune system. Make a to-do list and keep things in perspective. What’s the worst that could happen if you forget something?

Rest up for your tripWhen you are finally on the road, you may not sleep all that well. This can very hard on the immune system. Make sure to keep regular bedtime hours in the weeks prior to your trip.

Eat well before you goWe typically don’t eat well or drink enough water when we travel. Make sure you’re getting enough fruits and vegetables, legumes and whole grains before your trip and while you’re traveling.

Keep hand sanitizer handyEven when you do have the opportunity to wash your hands with soap and water, you’re still touching many things that other people have touched, which can inadvertently expose you to bacteria or viruses.
