Page 6: Employment Pages 322

Do networks work? Networking is nothing new, business professionals have been networking for decades, but how we network has changed dramatically over the past few years.

Online professional networking really started with LinkedIn; with it’s photo/ info layout, groups and online messaging it’s very similar to Facebook, though with notably fewer photos of cats. If you’re in the job market these days, are working freelance or are serious about making your next career step, then LinkedIn is the place to be; but only if you’re going to use it properly. Key requirements are: make sure your profile is bang up to date and well written, seek recommendations for your work, join appropriate groups, make valuable contributions to discussions and post regularly on topics which are relevant and aligned to your business/ career.

But what of the other social networking platforms? Well next up is Twitter, portrayed by the media as the domain of celebs and their teenage followers, Twitter is evolving into an important business networking forum, particularly when it comes to bringing together communities of local businesses. (If you’ve never set foot in Twitter and are thinking of dipping your toe in the water, I wrote a Twitter for Twits guide which you may find useful.). Once you’ve got the hang of the basics on Twitter you can dive in the local neworking groups and start getting to know other local businesses.

As a one (wo)man business based in Cumbria I’ve been getting to grips with some of the local networking sessions, notably #Cumbriahour and #Northwesthour. These dedicated hashtags provide local businesses with the chance to promote their business, build useful networks and maybe make a few new friends along the way.

But does any of it actually work?

Over the past few weeks I’ve been mulling over how useful these networks are; as the old adage goes “people buy from people” but, even in the midst of this technological revolution, “people” generally still seem to prefer to buy from “real people” as opposed to those in the social ether so what can we do about that?

Well, I’ve decided to embark upon a one woman mission and I’m inviting you to join me; this Christmas I am going to buy ALL of my Christmas gifts from local businesses. No big chains, no Amazon deliveries and no queuing for hours to park in massive out of town retail parks. Instead I will be seeking out the local gift shops and the small niche creative businesses to find imaginative and unusual gifts and support the local economy. I shall then be happy to promote those businesses within my network in the hopes of some sort of reciprocal arrangement which is, afterall, “how these things work”.

Those who know me well will probably be surprised at the modesty of this mission so, as I hate to disappoint, let’s take it one step further. Once Christmas is done with I am committing to sourcing as many products and services as I reasonably can from local suppliers. It all ties in with our Cumbrian lifestyle and is an excellent way to make use of all my new local contacts, made via social networking sites. The clue is in the name: netWORKS.

Networks only work if you use them so, join me in using your local network to support local businesses and break free from the “same old same old”.

Sam Walton, founder of Walmart, once famously said:

Rule #1: The customer is always rightRule #2: If the customer happens to be wrong, refer to rule #1

He’s been quoted in countless customer service training courses but I’m not 100% convinced he was right. If, as a business, you bend over backwards and give your customers everything they ask for, you’d go bust pretty quickly but equally if you give them nothing they ask for you would also fail; the dark art lies in finding the balance between the two.

Consulting with your customers, asking what they expect from you and getting feedback on how things are going is a crucial first step but that doesn’t mean you have to do everything they say. In my home town of Grange-over-Sands the hottest topic of discussion in hairdressers, cafes and butchers is what to do with the old lido on the seafront. It’s been closed since the late 1980’s and was threatened with demolition before being listed. We’ve now been consulted about its future but although most of us would nostalgically love the idea of it being returned to its former glory, is a giant unheated outdoor pool in Cumbria really a sound business proposition?

So it is with your customers - consult them to understand what they want and need from you but put your business head on before agreeing to their demands:

What services MUST you provide - what is essential? What services SHOULD you provide - it might not be essential but it’s still pretty importantWhat services COULD you provide - what things could give you a competitive edge? What services WON’T you provide - where do you draw the line?

This is often known as the MoSCoW model and is a useful way to focus your thinking on the essential elements of your business. Your customers may not turn out to be wrong, but they could be rather more idealistic than your bank balance will allow.

Is the customer always right?
