Hello and Welcome to the March 2010 issue of EN Magazine.

As I get bored of waking up to the sight of rain I have decided to shun the bad British weather and search for a little holiday pleasure. The EN Magazine team have selected 10 superb locations you can travel to for less.

And for those wanting to record a trip, or capture a special moment in time, we have expert advice on how to take the perfect photographs and the chance to win a digital photo frame.

We also go green this month as we investigate simple ways to make your home eco friendly and hopefully reduce those dreaded energy bills.

Last but not least we celebrate Mothering Sunday this month, as we celebrate the history of Mother’s Day and wish all you Mum’s a very relaxing day.

We hope you enjoy this month’s edition of EN Magazine.

Volunteers and staff at Noah’s Ark Children’s

Hospice will be travelling around the area in style after taking delivery of a Kangoo Van from Renault Enfield.

The van has been branded and kitted out for Noah’s Ark with the monthly lease being paid for by an anonymous supporter of the childrens charity. The insurance costs being covered by local business, Integrated Pest Management Ltd (IPM).

The charity will now use the vibrant red van for both its fundraising and family day activities. Noah’s Ark currently provides practical and emotional support to 90 life-limited children and their families living in the communities of Enfield and North London.

It runs a busy programme of events to raise the money its needs to maintain and build its outreach service. The generous donation will prove to be invaluable for transporting fundraising material, play equipment, leaflets and other items.

Diane Parry, Fundraising Manager at Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice, who drove away the Kangoo

Van, said: “Having our own branded van will make a tremendous difference to the transportation of goods and material for events and family days. “

“Thank you Renault Enfield and IPM for making this possible”,

Adrian Pitts, General Manager of Renault Enfield, said: “It’s always a huge pleasure for us to deliver a new Renault, however, we were thrilled to give Noah’s Ark the keys to this Kangoo Van. It will be used for a great local cause and we’re sure that anyone from Noah’s Ark who uses the Kangoo Van will enjoy driving it.”

Gareth Turner, director of IPM, said: “We’re delighted to be able to sponsor Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice on a continued basis. Year-on-year, we look at different ways to assist Noah’s Ark and being able to help this year by means of sponsoring this new vehicle which will enable the care workers to offer home support is just fantastic”.

Enfield’s electoral services team is

reminding all residents aged over 18 that the deadline for registering to vote in the local elections is Tuesday 20th April 2010.

The local council election takes place on Thursday 6th May, but people will not be able to vote if they are not on Enfield’s electoral register or they forgot to apply for a postal or proxy vote by the deadline.

The deadline for proxy votes is 5pm on Tuesday 27th April. Postal votes will be despatched around Friday 23rd April, and for them to be valid they must be returned by 10:00pm on Thursday 6th May – or they will not be counted.

Andrew Kozis from Oakwood, can thank his dad for winning ten free driving lessons for him in a driving safety competition organised by Enfield Council’s road safety team.

The competition was linked to, ‘Safe Drive Stay Alive’ a road safety production, which was performed to nearly two thousand, teenage students from schools across the borough.

Five key messages were highlighted in the presentation: speeding, drink driving, drug driving, talking on mobile phones, wearing seatbelts.

Using graphic illustrations

and drama the presentations were designed to show what can happen if young drivers do not heed these messages.

Andrew’s father read Enfield’s Parent Pact booklet, which gives parents useful information and advice about young people learning to drive and found the answer to the question - what is an ADI? His answer Approved Driving Instructor won the driving lessons prize.

The lessons will be provided by Paul Michael from Enfield School of Motoring who is keen to see that young drivers are taught properly and follow the safety codes.

Groups in Potters Bar are continuing

to benefit from Hertsmere Borough Council’s Ward Improvement Initiative Scheme.

The 60 plus day centre at The Wyllyotts Centre in Darkes Lane will be able to purchase new kitchen equipment thanks to Councillor Peter Knell who allocated just over half of his £2,000 budget. He said: “The club provides a daily lunch for older people. This money will help replace a lot of their equipment. The centre not only provides older people with a meal at lunchtime but also a place to meet and socialise.”

St Mary’s Church has benefited from a refurbished kitchen courtesy of Councillor John Donne who gave £1,000 from his allocation of money. He said: “The money has helped pay for a new wash room, kitchenette and storage cupboards in the church hall which is used by the church and also for community

gatherings.”

Potters Bar Flower Club has also benefited by getting a new portable sound system for their monthly entertainment sessions. Councillor Ron Morris allocated just over £150 from his fund and said: “Many older people are members of the club and go along to the monthly sessions to socialise with other people.”

Each Hertsmere borough councillor has £2,000 to spend on projects in their area but the money is running out so if you have any ideas on how the last of it can be spent, contact your local councillor now! To find out who your local councillor visit www.hertsmere.gov.uk or call 020 8207 2277.

As part of a year long celebration of one

hundred years of ‘Girl Guiding’, the Enfield Division held a Trefoil Tea Party to thank members of both local Trefoil Guilds and Ambassadors.

The Trefoil Guild is a national organisation of over 20,000 members mostly made up of women who have been, and still are, connected with Guiding.

Enfield is very fortunate to have two excellent and active Trefoil Guilds. In addition to their own programme of activities members are always willing to offer help whether its to individual units or at bigger events. They teach guides crafts and other skills as well as talking to girls about their days as guides.

At many events Trefoil members are called on to help make the tea, so it was agreed that they should have a tea party where others would make the tea, serve them and do the washing up afterwards. Enfield also has a number of Ambassadors who promote

Girl Guiding locally and this was a special opportunity to thank them.

Around 30 senior

members were invited and after judging the decorated cake and biscuit competition, they were served sandwiches, cakes and tea. Over 100 Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers prepared and served tea and entertained guests with singing, dancing, poems and plays.

County President and Trefoil Guild member, Doreen Hudson, said it was

“Such a happy event, lots of old and new friends to chat to, good food, lots of cups of tea and delightful waitresses”

Cllr Anne Marie Pearce, ex-Brownie and Ambassador for the Girlguides, also thanked members for the afternoon and congratulated the girls on their performances.

If you would like more information about volunteering for Girl guiding or joining Rainbows, Brownies, Guides or Senior Section please call 0800 169 5901, visit www.girlguiding.org.uk or e-mail [email protected].

Mothering Sunday is held on the fourth

Sunday of Lent and dates back to the 16th Century, when the Church required people to return to their Mother Church or Cathedral for that day’s mass.

Subsequently this day became known as Mothering Sunday, not through association with mothers, but because of the journey made to the Mother Church.

However, this was during an era when children as young as ten left home to take up work or apprenticeships elsewhere. For many of these children it was the only day in the whole year when they

would be reunited with their families.

It wasn’t until the 17th Century that this special day became a public holiday, allowing workers to take the day off so that they could fulfil their duties to the Church.

As this capsule of time was so precious among families, people often brought gifts of flowers and cake for their mothers.

In recent times, Mothering Sunday has become more commercialized with big organisations cashing in on what is most commonly known as Mother’s Day. Although the original meaning has been largely lost, it’s still nice to let our Mother’s know how much we appreciate them and all the things they do for us.

So whether you simply put the time aside to have a cup of tea and a chat with your mum, buy her a gift or have a meal don’t forget to tell your Mum that you love her this Mothering Sunday.

Planning a wedding is one of the most

anticipated events of a person’s life, but it can also be one of the most stressful. Many details must coordinate together in order to create and accomplish the wedding ceremony and reception with ease. For most brides it will be the biggest event they have ever organised, and it’s not easy finding everything you ever dreamed of within the reach of your desired venue, and of course your budget.

A bride-to-be is faced with a multitude of decisions, and sometimes wedding planning enthusiasm gives way to confusion and frustration. A wedding fair can help alleviate that worry by centrally locating multiple wedding necessities and by fostering innovative ideas. It can also be incredibly fun and a memorable experience that you can share with your mother, bridesmaids or friends.

Finding the right wedding fair for you can also be a challenge, and in my experience I would suggest that you lean towards a fair based in the same area you wish to get married in.

Local wedding shows and venues have good relationships with local suppliers, and more importantly you will be able to relate it to your own venue and personal tastes. Local suppliers will know your venue better than you, and will be able to show you pictures of previous weddings they have done, giving you a better idea of what is available.

So where can you go? There are local wedding fairs all year round, but on the

25th March surrounded by its elegant grounds, Forty Hall will be holding a show that will not disappoint.

This stylish event is aimed directly at Brides and Grooms, showcasing the best of local suppliers. These will include renowned local photographers Peter Dyer Photographs, Florists such as Panache right down to wedding stationary, jewellery, cakes, cars, harpists and many more.

Forty Hall’s fabulous fashion show will be hosted by a leading wedding outfitter and will display a lavish array of styles and designers. If you’re thinking about tying the knot in the near future then this is one chic and modern catwalk show you don’t want to miss.

If you can’t make the 25th March, don’t fret Forty Hall are holding three more wedding fairs so there is no need for any screaming bridezillas.

I recently visited the newly opened hair

and beauty salon, Mode on Lancaster Road in Enfield. I was greeted by delightful owners and sisters Sevy and Rebecca Modestou and I received something that I almost forgot existed - good old fashioned ‘Customer Service’. I had wrongly come to accept that it was something I would have to pay extra for, but this is clearly not the ethos of Mode.

The hairdressing and beauty duo prove they are a cut above the rest as they greet their clients with smiles and beverages. While they explain that anyone can treat someone for the first time, its making them feel happy and satisfied with the quality of service so they return again and again.

Mode concentrates on all aspects of beauty, hairdressing and design. They are constantly updating their styles to keep up with current fashions, and whilst the girls give me an extensive list of treatments they offer, I can’t help noticing how happy

their clients are, but most importantly how passionate these two sisters are about their business and clients.

Mode stands out from the crowd, because the owners care about the people walking through their door. They are happy to adapt or combine treatments to suit your personal needs…after all you are the customer!

Both sisters impress upon me how much time they spend researching and testing all of their products so that they complement your skin and hair, but if you have a particular product that you just can’t live without they will do their best to locate or use that product.

Mode offers an array of treatments that include treatments for scarring, pigmentations, cellulite and tanning to complete bridal packages.

The bridal hair and makeup packages start from £95 and include the trial; as a soon to be bride this is by far the cheapest price I’ve come

across and no you’re not compromising on quality.

Prices are very reasonable because Sevy and Rebecca are once again thinking about their customers. A visit to Mode is not going to break the bank, but it is going to make you feel happier, as I discovered first hand when I was offered a complementary treatment.

Sevy gave me a mixture of their Oxygen and Dermalogica facial, which left my skin feeling smooth and silky. My skin is extremely sensitive and I’ve rarely had a facial that hasn’t brought me out in a rash. However, this did not seem to phase Sevy who calmly talked though my past problems, current skin regime and lifestyle.

The treatment itself was relaxing and pain free, but also informative. Sevy explained how my face was split into sections, for example the condition of my skin on my forehead could differ from the skin on my cheek or chin. She assessed and treated each area, giving me tips on how to solve or improve any problem areas. By the end of the treatment I felt stress free and my skin felt young again.

As I left the tranquillity of the treatment room there was still one surprise left in store. I was treated to a wash and blow-dry to remove any cream/oils from my hairline, I left feeling refreshed, happy and slightly more educated.

Mode is situated at number 89 Lancaster Road, Enfield. For queries and appointments call 020 8367 7555

On the 4th April 1910 The Great Northern

Railway extension from Grange Park to Cuffley saw the first train arrive into Cuffley and Goffs Oak station.

Between 1871 and 1910 the railway line (nowadays known as The Hertford Loop) terminated at Windmill Hill in Enfield, a short distance from the station we now know as Enfield Chase.

When the line was extended to Cuffley and Goffs Oak (changed to Cuffley on 18th March 1971) new stations were also opened at Grange Park, Enfield Chase, Gordon Hill and Crews Hill. Whilst there was little demand for services to and from Cuffley in the years following the opening, the station was certainly put on the map with huge crowds travelling from London to see the remains of the German Airship shot down on 3rd September

1916 by Leefe Robinson VC. More famously Cuffley and the Hertford Loop was the location of the 1912 film ‘The Flying Scotsman’ and the 1966 advert for Castrol Oil, also featuring the locomotive the ‘Flying Scotman’.

In August 1912 construction work started on a single line from Cuffley via Hertford to Langley Junction (with connection to the main line south of Stevenage). However, when the 1st World War began it meant the work ceased abruptly, but it was later resumed in 1917 and the line was successfully opened for goods traffic on 4th March 1918. In December 1920 double tracking of the line was achieved and passenger services opened on 2nd June 1924 with stations at Bayford, Hertford North, Stapleford and Watton-at-Stone.

The extension of the Great Northern Railway line

from Grange Park to Cuffley is the subject of The Cuffley Industrial Heritage Society at their monthly meeting on Tuesday 13th April in Northaw Village Hall at 8pm.

To commemorate this historical industrial event, an exhibition will be held in Cuffley Library from 6th to 21st April. The exhibition will be opened at 11am by Marjorie

Reeve Chair of Northaw and Cuffley Parish Council. Beforehand a plaque, donated by the Parish Council, will be

unveiled in Cuffley Station booking office.

After the Exhibition ends in Cuffley Library, an enlarged display to include details of Stations in the Enfield area will be transferred to Forty Hall. The exhibition entitled ‘Making Tracks’ runs from 28th April to 20th June and will be open Wednesdays to Sundays 11am – 4pm.

Protecting your home against crime consists

of using some common-sense precautions that can deter a criminal from invading your home. Most criminals will look for the most easily accessible property and avoid those that have obviously taken steps to prevent entry. Although crime levels are falling in most places and in general people do fully secure their houses; older home owners may still feel vulnerable to burglary and doorstep crimes committed by bogus callers and rogue traders.

Local Charity, Age Concern has teamed up with Enfield Police and Council to raise burglary prevention awareness. They are offering older residents free practical advice against burglary, and how to deter thieves.

These groups have come together to provide free advice, information and reassurance to older people in the community. The Action Against Burglary roadshows not only aim to supply useful information, but also give people the chance to discuss their concerns on the subject.

The Home Office have

pledged £25k to help run free neighbourhood ‘advice surgeries’ for local residents. So put your mind at rest and visit the Parish Centre, Our Lady at St George, London Road, Enfield on Thursday 18th March from 10.00am to 3.00pm. FAST LITTER

Dear Editor,

I was disgusted the other day when I saw a

motorist who had parked up, finish off his takeaway and throw the packaging and food remains including bones out on his window!

Did this driver not release that the road and pavements are not actually rubbish bins.

Sadly this is a common sight, and it is this kind of behaviour that leads to areas becoming run down. It seems that some people just have no respect for their surroundings and while it should be the responsibility

of every individual to abide by social conventions, I also feel that takeaway companies have to start taking some responsibility for the rubbish that their customers are dumping all over our streets.

I’m sure that I’m not alone in my way of thinking – stop littering our streets! I would be ecstatic to hear of any fast food chain that was taking their customers littering seriously.

I have also noticed that the council have started to put out bins along the local street near my home, congratulations, but can they explain why none have been placed by two take away food premises who’s customers seem to feel the street is there for them to litter.

Everyday on my walk to Gordon Hill Station I

end up dodging dogs muck! I’m not a dog owner, but if I did have a dog I’m sure I wouldn’t leave its mess laying on the public foot path for some poor unknowing person to step in it.

If you’re a dog owner be

responsible and clean up after

it! I know this is not true of all dog owners, but it’s hard to separate the good owners from the bad by the amount of mess on the pavements. I can only come to the conclusion that many of you do not abide by the law. If only the council would take some action and fine these inconsiderate people.

As the recession draws to a close and the ‘green shoots’ of recovery begin to emerge businesses are beginning to register positive growth.

Whilst there are parallels with the last recession this one has been deeper than the recession of the 1990’s.The public finances are in a much worse state this time around.

This recession has been two fisted. The first blow a straight left to the chin, saw the collapse of Northern Rock in August 2007. The knock out punch, a right uppercut saw the capitulation of the mighty HBOS group in September 2008.

Local Business Rates up 120%

What isn’t helping local recovery is the massive hike in local business rates.

Over one hundred local traders in the Winchmore Hill, Edmonton and Southgate areas are facing closure after being hit by rises in business rates of between 50 and 120%.

With local authorities having lost millions following the collapse of the Scandinavian Bank Icesave local businesses are being made to pay for their mistakes.

The Government, both nationally and locally, needs to support local business traders. Levying unacceptable and unreasonable increases will not win votes at the forthcoming elections and will alienate the very voters this Government needs. Business owners are being forced to lay off staff in an effort to balance their books.

Gordon Brown needs to take a grip, a grip that has been somewhat shaky during his term of office.

He needs to be assertive, an assertion that

abandoned him when faced with the task of removing his battle trodden chancellor, and fellow Scot, Alistair Darling following disclosure of the flipping of his second property allowance not once but four times. Having lined up Ed Balls to take over the prominent position he went weak at the knees when Mr Darling refused to budge despite much media speculation.

It is going to be a slow road ahead. Postponing the serious deficit reduction until the recovery is well established cuts the risk of derailing the recovery in its early stages and is the only way forward. The race to number 10 has commenced but whether Mr Cameron has the Balls to succeed is another matter!

Investment tips for 2010

China via Bolton

Anthony Bolton the much acclaimed fund manager who led the Fidelity UK Specialist Opportunities fund to dizzy heights during the 28 years he was at the helm has come out of premature retirement to lead a charge into China.

Bolton sees China as the opportunity of the decade and has confirmed his plans to launch the ‘Fidelity China Special Situations Plc’ at the end of February.

With Bolton’s impressive track record this is a fund worth considering with the growth potential that China is currently offering. The fund will be eligible for ISA as well as non-ISA investment.

Another fund worth considering for those with a sense of adventure is the Allianz RCM BRIC fund. The Allianz BRIC Fund, a fund that invests predominantly in the equity markets of Brazil, Russia, India and China recorded an astonishing 77.2% for the year to the 1st February (Money Management

March 2010). By investing in the BRIC Countries investors are able to profit from local economies as they grow in wealth and confidence. Governments of the BRIC economies are investing in infrastructure, industry, education, housing, healthcare and in particular tourism. Whilst this fund invests in markets that historically have been more volatile than those of most UK and European funds the BRIC economies are currently outperforming most if not all G20 Countries and is therefore worth considering within an investment portfolio.

Those looking to create a balanced equity portfolio should also consider actively managed UK funds such as Invesco Perpetual’s High Income Fund and M&G’s UK Recovery Fund. Invesco Perpetual’s High Income Fund recorded 12.3%, whilst M&G’s UK Recovery Fund returned 41.6% for the same period. Although Invesco Perpetual’s High Income Fund did not perform as well as many of its peers over the last 12 months it has still returned an annual growth rate of 10.3% over the last ten years. The M&G fund focuses on troubled companies or companies that have recently seen a change in management.

Gartmore’s European Selected Opportunities Fund is also worthy for inclusion in most investment portfolios. The fund invests in mainland Europe and has returned 22.5% for the same period.

To complete the portfolio a UK All Share Tracking fund such as the Legal & General UK Index Trust is worth considering. This fund returned 32.1% for the year ending 1st February 2010.

Those with a lower risk profile should consider bond funds such as M&G’s Corporate Bond Fund. Despite the low risk nature of this fund it still returned 22.8% for the same period.

As we enter a new decade, we also enter into a new set of

ideals. Climate change was one of the first things that hit the headlines at the beginning of the year and it’s not about to go away. Whether you believe global warming is a direct result of human activities or the natural cycle of the planet, there’s no denying its got us all talking about it.

Being Green doesn’t mean you have to adopt a hippy lifestyle and say goodbye to hot showers. It’s also about saving energy, therefore saving you money! It doesn’t have to be complicated or difficult in fact ‘Going Green’ is easier than you think.

Nearly every home has the potential to become more eco friendly and cheaper to run too, which is great news for the bill payer. Once the basics like insulation and boiler efficiency have been looked at the rest can be achieved quite simply.

Draughts, once eliminated, can

drastically reduce bills, so draft excluding devices such as letter box and window draft excluders can make a real difference. I spoke to Julia from Drapemasters Interior Furnishers who offered the following advice:

Good quality thermal curtains or blinds can help retain 30% of heat which roughly equates to 20% off your annual utility bill. Using thermal linings with interlining (a layer of fabric inserted between the face and the lining of the drapery) creates a barrier to hinder the movement of heat loss. Blackout lining is also very effective as a thermal insulator and will prevent light from streaming in on those bright summer mornings – another bonus!

A good interior furnisher will not quote you a price over the phone or internet, but will come out and measure your windows, show you samples and recommend the best solution for your situation. This in turn allows the curtains or blinds to realise their full beauty and potential allowing you to sit back and

enjoy the atmosphere created by them and the energy savings achieved!

The thought of finding out which areas of your property can be environmentally improved can be daunting. An easy way to start is to buy an Eco Friendly Home Starter Kit. These are available for almost any type of home from a small flat to large house or office space.

There are many companies that offer eco kits, so just make sure you get the best deal. The cheapest and most informative eco goody bag we found was from: www.greenstamp.co.uk

A home starter kit contains energy saving ideas along with eco-friendly products. A good eco starter kit will often contain:

* Energy monitors that help you keep an eye on the power you are using and are also a great way of reducing wastage.

* Radiator panels are often included too, they reflect the amount of heat lost from radiators and hopefully increase the efficiency of your heating.

* Other eco friendly products available in the green home starter goody-bags are items such as energy saving light bulbs, eco friendly books and eco-balls - which are a natural alternative to conventional washing powders. No detergent is required, just place three Eco Balls in your machine and wash away. They are reusable for up to 150 washes!

5 Simple Ways to Make Your Home Green:

Everyone is buzzing about going green these days and the home is one of the best places to start. Since many of us spend most of our time at home, it just makes sense to start being more eco-friendly.

1. Eco CleanThe majority of commercial cleaners

that you find on supermarket shelves are full of toxins and chemicals that may leave your home shiny, but can wreak havoc on your lungs and skin. So instead of reaching for that bright blue window cleaner next time, why not try vinegar and water to leave your windows sparkling clean. Vinegar is an excellent cleanser and when mixed with baking soda, it also works as a natural abrasive.

Faber Multistop Cassette is aspring tensioned roller blindsystem that can be locked precisely in any requiredposition and is designed for fitting to slanted windows androoflights as well assmall/medium size standardwindows.

The system is suitable for lightscreen or blackout type fabricsin addition to those used forstandard roller blind applications.

A pile weatherstrip can befitted to the specially designedface fixing side channels foruse with a blackout/ dimoutfabric to achieve an excellentroom darkening effect in installations where 100% lightexclusion is not required.

The prime advantage of FaberMultistop Cassette is the user-friendly, hand operated controlsystem which uses a simple friction device to lock the blindat the precise height required, leaving the fabric evenly tensioned between the rollertube and bottom rail.

The cassette and matching sidechannels give an aestheticallypleasing appearance and enable the blind to be easily fitted with the minimum of tools. The system is recommendedfor all vertical windows up to amaximum size of 3 m2.

For slanted window installationsthe maximum width decreasesas the angle of inclination isreduced. Faber Multistop is notsuitable for horizontal applications.

Applications• Medium to small windows in

offices and other commercialenvironments.

• Meeting/conference rooms requiring room darkening facilities.

• Slanted windows in terminals, waiting rooms and other transit areas.

• Windows in portable buildings, partitions and other lightweight prefabricated panel systems.

• Dormer style and rooflight windows in commercial and domestic buildings.

If you barely find the time to clean, let along create your own cleaning products, there are lot’s eco-friendly products on the market these days that will keep your home clean as well as being green.

2. Conserve water. You don’t have to remodel your entire

bathroom to use less water. Going green is as easy as installing a new shower head, of course we all know having a shower rather than a bath saves water. You could also use a special toilet dam, to save water when you flush.Your toilets are massive water-wasters and a dam, which is easy to install yourself and can save you thousands of gallons of water every year.

Wash your dishes in a sink full of water rather than running the tap continually, this saves more water than you would imagine. If you have the space invest in a water butt. You will be amazed how much water they hold! This water can be used for all types of things from watering your garden to washing your car.

You’ve all seen the adverts about only boiling the kettle for exact amount of cups you need. Well, now you can take advantage of the Tefal Quick Cup. It only heats the water you need and claims that it can save up to 65% energy, compared to an ordinary kettle. It also takes just 3 seconds to heat a mug of water, how’s that for a fast cuppa!

3. Light Up Your Life, Not Your Energy Bill.

There are two ways to go here in order to reduce the amount of electricity that you use in your home. The first is to replace all ceiling lights with fluorescent bulbs. These are now available in warm light, so you won’t even miss the softer yellow look, yet the amount of energy saved is definitely going to make a difference in your electric bill. The other way to save more money and energy is to use LED lights in your lamps. These don’t work as well for overhead lights, but they are very bright and ideal for more concentrated illumination and cost pennies a year to run.

4. Bin it.Have more than one bin in your

kitchen. You are more likely to recycle if you have a separate paper, tin, plastic and food waste bins. Most kitchen designers can fit these into your existing space, or you can take a trip to the many D.I.Y stores and get down to it yourself.

5. Eco Furnishings. By choosing to buy items for your

home which are made out of materials that are easily replenished, you are contributing to a more eco-friendly world. Teak, oak and other fine woods take many years to grow, but materials like cork and bamboo, while still stylish, can be replaced rapidly. Choosing bamboo chairs and organic cotton or flax

fabrics to cover your furniture is a great way to start going green.

So those are some of the ways we can change our brick homes into eco homes, but what does the future hold for the housing industry? If like me you immediately start to think about intricate or space age designs, well…think again! House’s of the future could be made of straw!

Researchers from the BRE Centre for Innovative Construction Materials at the University of Bath have built a house made of prefabricated straw and hemp panels. Over the next year field experts plan to test how they perform as building materials.

I’m informed that straw and hemp are the ultimate environmentally-friendly building materials. They are totally

renewable and because they absorb CO2 as they grow, buildings made from it can have a tiny or even negative carbon

footprint.

The ModCell BaleHaus system consists of prefabricated panels made of a structural timber frame infilled with straw bales or hemp and rendered with a breathable lime-based system. It is the creation of White Design in Bristol and Integral Structural Design in Bath, and was used last year by Channel 4’s Grand Design’s presenter Kevin McCloud, to build an eco-friendly house in six days for the Grand Designs Live exhibition.

Researchers are hoping this will lead to

these renewable materials being used more widely in the building industry for housing in the UK.

Craig White, Director of ModCell, said: “It is unacceptable that 27 per cent of CO2 emissions currently come from the energy we use in our homes, it is just as unacceptable to continue to emit CO2 through the energy we use to make them. If we are completely serious about being “carbon free” we need to rethink the design of our buildings on a large scale. The ModCell BaleHaus system is designed to deliver just such a sustainable method of construction. These tests will offer proof that sustainable building materials are a realistic option for building on a large scale.”

There’s no denying that being green is at the top of some people’s agenda, even if it’s just to save a few pennies on the ever rising price of energy bills. However, it seems that now more than ever the possibility of owning a house that is completely eco friendly is not just a thing of the future.

I am writing this in late February, and we’ve finally had a few sunny

days after what has been a rather long and cold winter. Despite the cold there is a great display of winter colour in the gardens at Capel, and the Winter Bed in particular has a great display of Witch Hazels, winter-flowering heathers, and winter aconites. If you potted some bulbs up in the autumn, you should have enjoyed your reticulated irises by now and it won’t be long before the crocuses and daffodils appear.

It’s worth planning ahead now for some summer colour. If you like dahlias (and they are great for colour from June until the first frosts) now is the time to chose the varieties you’d like to grow this year: they are not hardy so need to be grown somewhere frost-free until mid-May when they can be planted out in your garden.

On to some jobs to do in your garden over the next couple of months. After the cold weather you need to check your plants to see what has survived the winter and what hasn’t, and remove what has died. Do remember the old trick of scraping the bark back to check for live green cambium tissue or its absence. There is still time to lift and divide overgrown clumps of perennials, and don’t forget to protect the tender new shoots from slug damage (we use Ferramol-based slug pellets which are organically approved and wildlife safe - unless you are a slug).

It’s a good time to plant new perennials to fill the gaps in your garden as there will be time for the roots to settle in before the drier weather. We are re-introducing hardy chrysanthemums to Capel this year to extend the flowering season right up until Christmas. These give a fantastic display and a good range will be for sale in Capel’s Plant Sales area, including

“Capel Manor” which was discovered in the gardens here and has lovely soft-yellow flowers.

Despite the cold weather many weeds seem to have kept growing so it is a good idea to tackle them now before they get out of hand: once you’ve cleared them why not try putting a mulch 5 to 10cm deep over your beds (keeping it away 5cm from the stems of your plants) to give them a feed as well as helping to keep the areas weed-free. It will also help keep moisture in the soil over the summer. At Capel Manor we use recycled green waste from EcoPark which works really well for us. Other well-rotted organic manures are available! Containers also need top dressing with fresh compost to restore the nutrient levels, and it is good to incorporate some controlled-release fertiliser too, which should feed the plants until the autumn.

Hungry shrubs and roses can be fed now, as well as fruit trees and bushes: the traditional feeds such as Fish, Blood and Bone or pelleted chicken manure work well as they keep feeding the plant throughout the year. It is also time to

think about feeding your lawn with a spring top-dressing to get it to green up, and once we get into April any bare patches can be either repaired with turf or sown with grass seed. Your lawn will need its first cut in March: keep the cut height on the high side until it is growing more vigorously. It is best to do this on a dry day and remember to keep off the grass when it’s frosty to avoid damaging it.

Onto the kitchen garden! There is still time to get some seed potatoes for growing in containers or on your allotment or garden. They do take up a lot of space so I tend to grow mostly

About one third of our food shopping ends up in the kitchen bin, and this could be recycled in a home compost bin, a community scheme or at a centralised compost centre.

first and second earlies (these are types of potato) as they work best for organic growing as they aren’t in the soil for as long so avoid pests and diseases better. However a good bet for a main crop if you insist on growing them is any of the Sarpo group of potatoes which have good blight resistance (blight has been a real problem for most of us in recent years). We normally plant ours out in mid-March after chitting them (this is term used to encourage the growth of the shoots on seed potatoes before planting and involves placing the seed potatoes in a shallow tray or egg carton with the thicker end uppermost in a well lit, dry, frost-free position. It can take 4-6 weeks for the shoots to grow and be ready to plant out). Remember to protect the new shoots once they are in the ground by earthing them up regularly and covering them with a double layer of horticultural fleece.

Onion sets and shallots can be planted now, and peas and broad beans can be either sown inside or sown directly into the ground. The No Dig vegetable plot at Capel will give you some ideas of what to grow and when to sow it. More exotic crops such as Jerusalem Artichokes are worth a

try, and make an interesting change (although they can give some people a nasty does of wind!). The end of March is time to start sowing crops such as beetroot, carrots, leeks and parsnips. It’s also time to think about sowing hardy annuals either in pots or directly into the ground, and if you have a heated greenhouse or propagator you can get your tender herbs and annuals sown.

We’ll be harvesting our first crops of rhubarb from the Walled Garden at Capel soon: there is a good show of a range of varieties, some of which you may not have heard of.

It’s well worth putting an upturned bucket or dustbin over an established crown to “force” the rhubarb and give those tender pale pink shoots

you get when the light is excluded. They are my first “new” crop of the year so it is an exciting moment when the first stems are harvested!

Affordable travel can be within your reach even through an

economic downturn. There are several key steps that can be taken to make the most out of any travel budget, allowing for a quality holiday no matter the location or length of the trip.

With the cost of living rising, it is immediately presumed that these days a holiday is a luxury you need a big budget for. However, you need not wait for years until you have saved enough money to get an excellent holiday experience. There a plenty of destinations in the world you can visit, on a shoe string budget, that leave you with a memorable experience.

The majority of the population may have to cut back in one way or another during these tough economic times, with money not flowing like it used to the first step is to assess what you can really afford to spend on a holiday. Determine a travel budget and then begin to look for trips that fit within that price range.

Modify Travel Style: Stay at Budget Hotels and Hostels for Less

For travellers that are accustomed to holidaying in style at five star luxury hotels for two weeks at a time, try cutting back and opting for a more moderate three star hotel or if a five star resort is a must, reduce the length of the trip to a price that can be comfortably afforded. Great deals can be found when

switching to a four or a three star hotel with minimal difference in the level of comfort.

For the budget traveller, try staying at hostels or independent budget hotels. Once the favoured accommodation for students, hostels have a wide range of clientele from families to seniors, while others still cater primarily to students. Many budget hotels have comparable prices to hostels. The great majority of hostels have private rooms with ensuite bathrooms costing less than a two star hotel and can often be much more comfortable.

Scan for Deals: Websites Aimed to Save Money

There are several websites geared towards providing travellers with the cheapest deals available. Try looking for deals on Travel Zoo, Expedia or Last minute. Deals aren’t just limited to discount websites- often hotels and airlines will have their own limited promotions such as a night’s free stay at an airport hotel when flying on a particular airline or discounts on consecutive nights booked at the same hotel. It is also worth checking local travel agents as they might be offering mid-season sales.

Be Flexible: Travel Off-Season for Deals

When planning in advance, it pays (or in this case, saves) to play around with a variety of travel dates. Flying mid-week may be cheaper than flying out on a Saturday. Travelling in an off-season can allow for savings on high-season prices, most notably in the summer months. Visiting in the spring or autumn often provides better deals and the same enjoyable weather.

Go Somewhere with a Favourable Exchange Rate

Any traveller wants to get the most for their money so go somewhere where the exchange rate is favourable. The Chinese Yuan and Icelandic Kroner have fantastic exchange rates which

can stretch any budget. By travelling to economically hard-hit countries, like Iceland, helps stimulate the local economy by supporting small businesses and the tourism trade by shopping and utilizing their services. Travelling within Asia can also be cheap due to the favourable exchange rate and the fact that the cost of most things are considerably cheaper than in the U.K.

the south-eastern part of Central Europe, and is the second largest country in the area, after Poland. Romania has beautiful landscapes with forests covering over one quarter of the country! You can take a scenic hike and even camp in the Carpathian Mountains, also known as the Transylvanian Alps, often associated with Dracula. Visit medieval churches and monasteries in Moldavia, or take photographs of the famous Danube Delta.

You can get decent hotels and hostels for £11 - £35 per night. Check out www.booking.com and for hostels www.hostelworld.com

Netherlands:Netherlands is a country full of

waterways, man-made canals, dikes and stunning scenery. Much of the country is flat and at or below sea level making it an ideal place to cycle, so getting around

is relatively cheap. The western coast of the Netherlands has one of the most beautiful North Sea beaches, attracting thousands if not millions of people every year.

Hotels start at £35 with hostels costing around £17 per night. For deals try www.hostelbookers.com and www.hotels.nl

Malta:Malta is probably the friendliest island

I’ve ever come across, and although the national dialect is Maltese every citizen can speak English. Malta boasts beautiful sandy beaches and is drenched in history. Malta is a mix of North African, Arabic and Mediterranean influences.

This tiny island nation (all 316 sq km of it, comprising the islands of Malta,

Gozo and Comino) has a quirky character all of its own. From prehistoric temples, baroque architecture rattling buses, colourful fishing boats, to festas of fireworks, this nation has loads of unique charm.

Hotels are fairly cost effective in Malta, the more you pay the better the quality, but if it’s just a clean room you need, then you can find something decent for around £25 per night.

Cheap Travel Destinations in Latin America

Ecuador:You can get a decent hotel from £11

per night and a decent meal for around £4 everywhere around the country. Nowhere else on earth will you find so

much natural diversity in such a small space. Ecuador is the second-smallest country in South America, but its range of offerings is no less than astounding. In one day’s drive you can journey from the Amazon Basin across glaciated Andean volcanoes, down through tropical cloud forest to the Pacific coast.

There are a host of places to look for cheap accomadation, including www.travellerspoint.com

Ecuador is inexpensive, but is packed with points of interests. You can get relatively cheap organised guided tours Amsterdam’s beautiful cannels by night

of Ecuador’s well-preserved colonial style architecture, rain forests, volcanic landscapes, and more. However, it can be cheaper to book these trips once you’re

in Ecuador, but if you would like to book before you arrive there is plenty of choice out there. A good place to start is: www.infohub.com.

Bolivia:Where else in the world can

you stay in a hostel for as little as £4 or a hotel for £9 per night! There are literally hundreds of choices when it comes to finding cheap accommodation, so if you are planning a visit to Bolivia I suggest you buy one of the many guide books out there to find some of the best local deals.

Bolivia is still rather unspoiled by the modern world. It is the hemisphere’s highest, most isolated and rugged nation. It’s among the earth’s coldest,

warmest, windiest and steamiest spots. It also boasts among the driest, saltiest and swampiest natural landscapes in the world.

Bolivia is the poorest country in South America, but only in economic terms. The cultural wealth and the great natural diversity from the desolate Altiplano to the breathtaking Lake Titicaca and tropical Amazon,

makes Bolivia one of the most interesting countries in South America to visit.

Cheap Travel Destinations in Africa

Morocco:Morocco is a real gem, with its unique

food, interesting art and rich history. It is a land of sharp contrasts, a truly fascinating place. With undeniable cheap food, accommodation, and commodities and a great exchange rate, your money goes much further here. It is relatively easy to get around in Morocco and there’s a lot to see. Marakesh Riads, which are traditional houses or palaces with an interior garden, are often expensive, but ordinary hotels in Morocco can be reasonable. You can find some great accommodation deals starting at £16pp per night at lowcostbeds.com

Cheap Travel Destinations in the Middle East

Turkey:Turkey was the capital of Byzantine

and Ottoman Empires. Today, travellers visit turkey to see remains of its ancient grandeur. Historical attractions include the Hagia Sophia, Troy, Konya, and the Basilica Cistern. Food in Turkey is another reason for delight; you can get full breakfast at a hotel for just £4, pizza for around £5, coffee or ice cream for about £1.

Thailand: When it comes to exotic travel, few

countries can offer the experiences of Thailand. Its culture, language, regional differences and scenery, have helped make it one of the most popular places in

the world for both adventurous travellers and laid back seekers after tranquillity.

From Bangkok, the Thai capital, to the Northern cities of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai plus the lesser known north eastern province of Isan, down to Krabi and Trang in the south and the perfect islands of Phuket, Samui and Chang, the variety of cultures, life styles and food is amazing.

Even if you dine in fancy restaurants, you don’t need to spend more than £20 a day to enjoy a variety of Thai cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can get a hotel room for £7 a night. Want to see Thailand’s World heritage sites, palaces, Buddhist temples, museums, and archaeological sites? Save on the taxi fare and go around in samlor (a three-wheeled transport driven by pedals),

tuktuk (motorized version of samlor) or city buses– you’ll be amazed how far your money can go.

Vietnam: Vietnam is a world of vivid colours,

bold landscapes, dramatic coastlines and a compelling history.

Vietnam offers more than 500 traditional dishes. You don’t need to spend a fortune to sample most, if not all, of them. Pretty much everything in Vietnam is cheap. You can for instance get a bottle of beer for just 50p. There are hotels you can get for £7 to £15. If you want to go around Vietnam, the best and cheapest way is to ride a cyclo (part cart, part bicycle).

One of Asia’s best kept secerts is their amazing cheap airline: www.airasia.com

China: China is an epic adventure. From the

wide open and empty panoramas of Tibet to the push and shove of Shanghi, a journey through this colossus of a country is a mesmerising encounter you will never forget.

The sheer diversity of China’s terrain takes you from noisy cities fizzing with energy to isolated mountain-tops to one of the 7 Wonders of the World, The Great Wall of China. Although it may not be cheap to travel to China, once you’re there things are a lot less expensive than you would expect. National heritage sites are not as expensive as in the U.K, even hotels in the cities can be found for around £30 per night.

Have you ever wanted to capture a view, a portrait or a moment in

time for posterity? For the beginner it can be confusing. There are so many digital cameras out there, how do you choose the right one for you? Ask yourself - what is your budget and what do you want from your camera? Do you want a small pocket sized camera just to take “photos” or do you want to take up photography as a hobby and have a camera that gives you more control?

Here is a brief overview and some tips on how to compose a shot using the light to your advantage and how to get the best prints.

The three main categories of digital cameras are:

•The compact pocket-sized camera with pre-set automatic settings.

•The advanced amateur or bridge camera, usually for the more serious amateur, has auto and manual settings and in some models additional changeable lenses.

•The professional camera, the SLR, which has manual settings and changeable lenses.

Once you decide on a camera the accompanying manual will show you how to set the date, time, language, sleep mode and other settings. The compact and bridge cameras will have the facility for finer tuning in the Menu. If your memory card is large enough it is probably best to set Image Quality on a high setting - the higher the number of pixels, the better quality your printed photos will be. So if you are taking your camera on holiday hoping to capture some awe inspiring photo’s it is probably

worth investing in a decent size memory card.

Normally, digital cameras will allow you to shoot in JPEG format which produces good quality images, whilst compressing them. However, some cameras also have a choice of RAW and TIFF formats, which produce very high quality, uncompressed images but these take up much more memory than a JPEG and tend to be used by professional photographers. If you are allowed a choice choose the JPEG format. This will save you fiddling around with photo editing programmes when you come to printing your masterpieces.

Most digital cameras will have an in-built flash which will automatically flash or alert you when the lighting is too dim. Some cameras have a digital zoom, which zoom in further than the optical zoom, but you should be very careful when using this function as your image will not be as sharp as a shot taken with an optical zoom. If you’re not careful you could end up with a lot of fuzzy faces!

Don’t be put off by Dial Settings

The camera dial may have various settings for easy access. Auto and Program P can be used for all shots. When your camera is in Auto mode, all settings are pre-set and cannot be overridden manually. Whilst modes P, (Digital Image Stabilisation, sometimes called anti-shake) DIS, Portrait, Landscape and Scene also have pre-set functions, some, such as white balance, zoom and panorama, may be overridden manually.

The Scene mode scrolls through several more auto-settings such as

Sport and Indoor. There may even be a Guide mode, which is a very quick and useful tool. It scrolls through various shooting problems and suggested solutions, such as brightening the subject and reducing blur or red-eye.

A camera captures an image during exposure. This is achieved by allowing light in through the aperture (lens opening) and the shutter speed. Apertures can be confusing because they are measured as f-stops, for example f-2 is a large aperture and f-8 is a small one.

A large aperture that allows more light in will usually be combined with a faster shutter speed, which restricts the length of time the light is allowed in through the lens opening. A small aperture allowing less light in is usually combined with a slower shutter speed, allowing the light to enter the lens for longer time.

2

When using a bridge camera, besides the auto-settings there may be extra ones which allow you more control over the aperture and shutter speed, such as My Mode, Manual, Shutter priority and Aperture Priority.

Shutter priority allows you to choose a shutter speed whilst automatically setting the aperture size for that speed. This would tend to be used when trying to capture something in motion. A short shutter-speed will freeze an action shot sharply, whereas a longer shutter-speed is more likely to blur the moving subject and convey a sense of motion.

Aperture priority allows you to choose the aperture size, but the shutter speed is then set automatically. A small aperture would be used for a landscape shot where the focus on both the foreground and background will be sharp. However, a larger aperture would be used for a portrait shot so that your subject’s face is sharp, but the background is blurred. In Manual mode you have full control and can set both aperture and shutter speed. The setting My Mode saves your own favourite customised settings, saving time and effort.

The beauty of digital photography is that after the initial outlay any further expense is negligible. Take full advantage of your digital camera by using the visual screen on your camera to view your

image before you take your picture, after all this is what will appear in your photo. Keep the camera as steady as possible by resting it on a wall or tripod and focus your subject within the brackets. This is particularly important when taking Macro and night-time shots.

Macro shots are taken using large apertures with the camera held close to the subject, sometimes in awkward positions which may cause your hands to shake. Night-time shots usually require a longer exposure time otherwise the image will become dark with dots of light. To increase the exposure time a slower shutter speed is used, the camera must be kept still during this period otherwise the image will become blurred.

There are three important things to consider when taking photographs; composition, lighting and the rule of thirds. Composition and lighting are very important when producing photos and should never be under estimated. If you have good natural light your image will be clear and crisp.

Using the rule of thirds helps produce nicely balanced, easy on the eye pictures. The rule of thirds is where you mentally divide the shot into thirds both horizontally and vertically, and place your subject where any of the lines intersect. Also, as you have to position things relative to the edges of

5 Handy Tips from Local Professional Photographer

Joel Dyer1. An SLR (single lens reflex) camera

is good place to start, because it’s easy to use and relativity inexpensive

2. Make sure you read your manual so you can set up your camera correctly.

3. A good place to build your confidence and knowledge is through a local camera club. There are several local clubs in the area; a simple internet search will give you details of your closest meeting.

4. Digital cameras make people lazy, take your time and get the best shot first time round. Ask yourself what you want to achieve from the shot.

5. Use natural light to help make your shots more interesting. For example, with the sun behind your subject you can get some of the most dramatic visual effects.

the frame it helps get rid of tiny subjects surrounded by vast empty space.

When you’re in landscape mode,

keeping both the foreground and background sharp, focus on a point of interest - perhaps a barn or a boat as this will keep the eye from searching aimlessly for a focal point. Another useful tip for Landscape shots is to use the natural line of the landscape, river, or wall, to lead the eye into the distance. Frame landscape or even portrait shots with overhanging trees or through a window or doorway. Early morning and evening light create the best landscape shots.

When taking photographs in portrait mode zoom in on your subject and make it as large as possible against the background. It is best to take portrait shots with your subject in the shade, in diffused or side lighting. Harsh direct light can create shadows around the eyes or even make the subject look washed out.

Once you have a collection of photographs that you want to display you can either take your memory card into a photo processing shop or upload your pictures to one of the many online photo services that will print your pictures for you. Alternatively if you have one of the many photo editing software packages available, you can edit your images removing any blemishes, adjust

the light or even add some text before printing them out.

Hopefully, you will now be able to take some good photos, but remember if you want better photos there are plenty of photographic books and websites

out there to help you. A professional photographer will take several shots, sometimes hundreds to find the perfect one. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different settings and viewpoints because the failures can always be deleted.
