The Alexis Renard Gallery has the pleasure to announce its new catalogue and exhibition
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
which will be presented during the following events
Parcours des Mondes – From the 8th to the 13th of September 2015
Galerie Béatrice Soulié – 21 rue de Guénégaud – 75006 Paris -‐ France
PAD London – From the 13th to the 17th of October 2015 Berkeley Square W1 – London – United Kingdom
Inspired by the famous tale Beauty and the Beast, this title fits perfectly with the subjects of Islamic and Indian art: beautiful princesses surrounded by monsters, hybrids, composite animals, beasts and rakshasas, fierce deities... The exhibition will present a selection of objects and paintings sourced in Persian and Indian myths, for example the Ramayana, as well as pieces linked to Hindu or Muslim religions, and secular scenes or princely portraits: for example an Indian painting depicting the terrible goddess Kali licking a freshly cut skull; Ramayana scenes depicting princess Sita surrounded by rakshasas or the giant Kumbhakarna sleeping or scenes with charming ladies gathered in the hidden zenana or harem.
This exhibition is an opportunity to discover the liveliness and modernity of the colourful Indian and Islamic paintings and pieces. Since the gallery opening in 1999, Alexis Renard has been building bridges between European and Oriental culture, linking the ancient art to the modern world, and trying to enlighten antiques from a modern point of view, showing how much we can learn from them, design wise and in many other ways. This exhibition is also an opportunity to remember tales and myths from our childhood from a different angle.
