Mr. Henricus Peters• Born in New Zealand to Dutch parents• Taught in the United Kingdom for 5 years both

class and supply teacher, before coming to Shanghai and YCIS. This is my second year with YCIS Shanghai

• Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences (NZ) and Masters degree in Education (UK) specialising in learning strategies

• Ecology Action Organiser at Regency Park

Harbor, Washington.• Taught in South Korea, the Philippines and

Saudi Arabia prior to YCIS.• Bachelor’s degree in International Relations-

Latin American emphasis and a Minor in Spanish from Pepperdine Univ.

• Master’s in Arts- Teaching English Language from De La Salle Univ.

• Currently taking Master’s in Edu.- Curriculum and Instruction- Seattle Pacific Univ.

Promotion• Promotion occurs three times a year:

following the main holidays depending on the classroom teachers and EAL teachers evaluation of student’s progress.

• Promotion is based on student’s progress in all four macro-skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening). However given the context and background of the school and students reading and writing are a primary focus.

EAL students learn the same Englishlanguage concepts as in the

mainstream.

EAL works closely with Learning Support

• Some students in EAL mainly have issues with literacy or English as a language.

• Others simply have other issues that have prevented them from progressing more quickly such as learning difficulties

Ideas for parents and at home• Reading strategies - 15 minutes each day

• Tutor communication – suggestions for tutors to write in diary– expectations on homework- supervise but don’t do it

for them. Mistakes are ok!

• Spelling strategies and practice - look, say, trace, cover, write, check

At HomeDeveloping their native language first will help promote English language and literacy.

•Age appropriate books - written in the native language and second language.•Build success and confidence in your child by motivating and encouraging them daily. •Speak to your child in English as much and as often as you can.•Create some “English only” time.•Varied English activities - DVDs/games/singing/computer.

Making Homework Successful• Good learning environment at home.• Always praise and encourage your child.• Make it fun and include some games.• Have a good English dictionary at home.• Develop your child’s independence.• Use the computer at home for English
