Welcome

The whole of the Dumfries and Galloway region is the location for the first Environmental Art Festival Scotland. We invite you to join us for a creative, stimulating and fun programme of events that will inform and challenge feelings and thoughts about landscape and places within it.

In Dumfries and Galloway people live closely with the land, this relationship is always changing and evolving. The creative arts are breathing new life into the region, helping to celebrate its special places and making innovative links with other walks of life to make Southwest Scotland a positive, progressive place to live.

Much of the local, national and international artwork commissioned in recent years focuses on our relationship with landscape and environment, and exploring new ways to connect with nature. This year’s Environmental Arts Festival Scotland (EAFS) will further explore this relationship through temporary commissions, debates, discussions, musical events and performance by artists from the region and round the world. Our ambition is for EAFS to grow into a biennial event - cementing Dumfries and Galloway as an international centre for environmental art practice.

EAFS is the result of a new partnership between three organisations: Wide Open, Spring Fling and The Stove and we would like to thank Dumfries and Galloway Council and Creative Scotland for making this festival possible under their Place Partnership Programme and through Year of Natural Scotland. We would also like to thanks our festival partners including Scottish Natural Heritage, Forestry Commission Scotland, The Crichton Carbon Centre, Creative Carbon Scotland, Dumfries & Galloway LEADER Programme, University of Glasgow, Savour the Flavours, Visit Scotland and Destination Dumfries and Galloway, for their support in making EAFS a reality.

HISTORY & CONTEXT

Dumfries & Galloway has a long history and heritage of close cultural connections with the landscape, from ancient rock art to Henry Moore’s groundbreaking modernist sculptures at Glenkiln, and more recent commissions such as Andy Goldsworthy’s Striding Arches.

Right up to date the group ‘Do Not Resusitate’ sees collaborative projects between artists and climate scientists, and the region boasts a UNESCO designated Biosphere Reserve and a national Dark Sky Park. An internationally recognised programme of commissioning and collaborative practice over the last 15 years have helped to make the region a rich cultural place with much to discover.

The region is home to Charles Jencks’ Garden of Cosmic Speculation as well as permanent artworks to visit including Hideo Furuta’s Adamson Square project, Matt Baker’s works at Cairnsmore of Fleet and sculptures in Galloway Forest by a number of artists. Currently the landmark sculpture Star of Caledonia is in development for the border crossing between Scotland and England at Gretna, and Dalziel & Scullion’s sensory artwork Rosnes Bench is under construction for the Biosphere/Dark Skies Park.

Here is your festivalAt the heart of the four-day Core Festival Weekend (30 August - 2 September) are four clusters of commissions, exhibitions and performances, in four diverse locations spread across this large and beautiful area of Southwest Scotland. The commissions have been awarded to well-known and emerging artists from home and abroad. All have been specially developed to reflect the 2013 festival theme of Energy and the Land.Each day will see a special emphasis put on one of the artworks - making it the focus for a host of other activities and events. These will include talks, dance, performance, live music, a picnic and a ceilidh.

A study of place, ecosystems and the meaning of ‘the border’, presented at the English-Scottish frontier with moving images on a giant projection canvas beneath the nine-lane M74/M6 River Sark Bridge.

One of the UK’s shortest but most geopolitically important rivers, the Sark has marked the westernmost border since 1552. Thousands whisk over it daily but few notice it. No signs announce its presence or identity. From Allfornought Hill to the Solway Firth, Cinema Sark uses video, found sound, archive materials and interview audio to explore connections between the Sark’s ecosystems and the people who live and work in them. Live environmental sensors constantly update the Sark System Engine, warping the visual tracks and making every viewing unique.

Inspired by Ecosystem Services Modelling, Cinema Sark flows from six months of filming, discussions and collaboration between video artist John Wallace, programmer Dine, and Royal Society-Wolfson Professor of Soils & Global Change Pete Smith.

Talks and discussions around the notions of territories and borders led by Professor Ted Cowan. This will be followed by a performance of newly composed piece of music inspired by James Clark Maxwell by Wendy Stewart & James Wyness (see below). An electro acoustic sonic exploration of James Clerk Maxwell`s life and work through harp, voice, environmental and manipulated sound. Reflecting his background, ideas and passions in a compo-sition by local harper Wendy Stewart with sonic explorer James Wyness from the Borders.

An exhibition of Charles Jencks and Cecil Balmond’s spectacular design for Star of Caledonia, a landmark to be located at the border between Scotland and England at Gretna, the main road gateway to Scotland. The design takes its inspiration from the power energy, scientific heritage and magnetic pull of Scotland, and pays homage to James Clerk Maxwell, the pre-eminent Scottish physicist and mathematician.

The idea of the Passing grew out of Do Not Resusitate, an ongoing art/science collaboration organised by the Crichton Carbon Centre. This slideshow illustrates the ideas behind the project which aims to say goodbye to our past way of living, goodbye to consumerism and capitalism and move on to the new way of living: ‘If you don’t create a future - you are doomed to live in someone else’s.

A newly commissioned audio and sculptural installation in a phone box which re-engages with the forgotten, derelict relic - the phone box stands on the brink of our populated spaces. Collected conversations reveal personal histories of place, a shared sense of identity and belonging. Our associations with place become an ephemeral link - nostalgia recorded, remembered and relayed.

A jet of white water is forced skyward from a gravity-fed fountain placed downstream of a dramatic highland waterfall. Powered entirely by the immense natural energy of water, the intervention has been developed to explore a number of related themes from debates on sustainability and energy use to questions of landscape identity and representation.

The work refers back to eighteenth century Scotland when a radical shift occured in the popular perception of Highland landscapes, transforming them from hostile wildernesses to be avoided to awe-inspiring destinations to be experienced. Artists were at the centre of this process, developing an essential romantic iconography of which dramatic waterfalls played a key role. The fountain too has long been a focal point for great landscaped gardens as a tool for taming, containing and re-presenting nature. In this way the fountain encourages a reconsideration of the very nature of nature.

An evening of performances, explorations, music and talk. Bring your own picnic and join us in the beautiful Dark Skies Park. Highlights include artist James Winnett’s performance presentation of his work and a visit to sound artists Frenchbloke and Soundhog as they transmit The Dark Outside FM from a spectacular site.

Tune in and hang out in The Dark Star Lounge. You are welcome to bring your own bottle along with your picnic.

A 24-hour site-specific radio transmission within the Dark Skies Park with contributions from musicians, artists and producers from all over the world. The transmission is of specially composed work, forgotten recordings and alternate versions of existing work, none of which have been heard in public before.

Listen in your car or on a portable radio while travelling, or sit back and relax and hear it transmitted to The Dark Star Lounge deep in the Forest.

Archaeologists Macgregor and Shearer invite visitors on a journey to explore the timescapes of Stroan through a series of sculpture installations. The Stroan Viaduct represents a junction - a convergence of watery and human energies, all around the viaduct are traces of past places, stories, of possibilities.

You are invited to experience a unique environmental performance at Clatteringshaws Dam, a place containing great potential energies. A skin to protect during the passage of time and a flight across infinity, Sporopollen disguises and reveals the nature of its core. This event looks at the relationship between exterior and interior landscapes, inviting the audience to consider their own boundaries.

Two film screenings inspired by Dumfries and Galloway.

Speaking the Land was commissioned by Wide Open and Scottish Natural Heritage and explores our relationship with landscape through film and writing, giving the film an emotive narrative.

Breathing Earth documents how Japanese artist Susumu Shingu searched all over the world to locate his dream for a sustainable community, ending up inspired by the Galloway landscape.

Gimme Shelter is a multimedia and interactive film and sculpture installation taking place in the ruins of the 16th century Old Kirk of Anwoth. The building has been a famous ruin for many years and nobody remembers when the roof came down. The project takes us on a virtual tour exploring the whereabouts of the disappeared roof of the building. With video projections and environmental sculpture the artists invite the visitors to see the place with new eyes, and explore a traditional and at the same time provocative idea: how to incorporate the far away future in our present way of life. Also the artists offer an opportunity to take part in restoring the ruin in the year 2513, by planting an acorn.

Come and join artists, scientists and environmentalists for an evening of talks, discussions and food exploring our relationships with land and how this influences our health and wellbeing. David Borthwick and Angie McClanahan will consider personal responses to landscape and place, urban and rural, the local and the global, and some critical questions around these topics. Open Jar Collective will encourage participants to experiment with different foods (see below). Artists Ueno Masao, Dalziel & Scullion will join the wisdom circle and share their ideas and thoughts about the land.

The Dairy House Open Jar Collective present a project considering the interconnections between the food we eat and how it’s produced and distributed in Dumfries and Galloway. Over the summer they interviewed people and documented places connected with dairy farming, gathering an understanding of relationships, passions and perspectives on food. Poet Jean Atkin will read from The Dark Farms, her collection of poetry about Galloway Forest. Time: 5pm

An opportunity to witness shamanistic rituals and learn about spiritual practices and life in Mongolia. The traditional Mongolian house is a ger (home) or yur, a form of living that has a long history and is still in use. Living in a ger is highly developed and includes the direct experience of sky and earth. Dalziel & Scullion will run a practical workshop linked to their innovative Rosnes Bench project, a new commission for the Biosphere/Dark Skies Park area. The Rosnes Bench, a series of ergonomically designed benches, reconnects people’s senses to nature, helping them slow down, look and feel the natural world around them. The workshop will be a creative activity which focuses on aspects of the design process and location of the Rosnes Bench. Booking essential.

the Dome of Silence Ueno Masao Time: 1pm - 3pm Location: Gatehouse of Fleet (starting point TBC)

Come and join a walk to the newly created sculpture by Japanese artist Ueno Masao. Throughout August, Ueno has been building a structure using imported Japanese bamboo from his own grove and some local willow. Weaving the materials together Ueno will create a dome of silence.Ueno Masao is the inaugural John Muir International Artist in residence funded by Creative Scotland as part of the Year of Natural Scotland.

An illustrated presentation of present and future projects that connect art and the land. Projects presented will be - A People’s Atlas of South West Scotland, IRIS: Place, Identity, Memory, Zero Footprint, Fieldtrips, Views & Voices: Engaging communities with their landscape.

GLIMPSE Will Levi Marshall & Donald Urquhart Location: Forestry Plantation at Barony Agricultural College, Parkgate DG1 3NE Latitude 55.16750 Longitude - 3.53050 Visible from A701 near Parkgate when traveling North. Glimpse is a visually dynamic, temporary installation located within a coniferous forestry plantation. A horizontal slice through the forest will be made to visually disappear by the installation of Scotland’s largest watercolour. The conceptual framework of Glimpse has been developed from examining land use and forestry in Dumfries and Galloway.

Woodland Activities & Wild Food Forage Time: 2pm - 5pm Location: Barony Woods - access from Barony College car park

Along with Glimpse, Forest School leader Phoebe Marshall will be running an afternoon of fun in the woods for all ages, including a scavenger hunt and things to make and do. FREE drop-in session, booking not required.

Mark Williams, wild food expert will be leading a wild food forage followed by a cooking demonstration. Presented in partnership with Flavour Fortnight. FREE but booking essential due to limited places.

For the installation & events follow the signs to Barony and use the Barony carpark. Pedestrian access 5-minute walk along a rough track. Free car parking, toilet facilities and cafe available. Wellies recommended.

Visit to Charles Jencks’ Garden of Cosmic Speculation Time: 10am - 12.30pm Location: Bus departing from Gracefield Arts Centre, Dumfries DG1 1JQ Charles Jencks’ Garden of Cosmic Speculation is one of the most important gardens to have been created in Europe in the last few decades. It is the result of years of work, based on many conversations with some of the world’s most brilliant scientists and thinkers from cosmology, biology, chemistry, complexity science, chaos theory and quantum physics. It normally only open to the public for five hours every year. Booking Essential. EAFS Gathering #4: Landscape as a Resource – Why Environmental Art? Time: 7pm - 9pm Location: Robert Burns Centre Film Theatre, Mill Road, Dumfries DG2 7BE

Talks and a panel discussion leading from Monday’s theme ‘Landscape as a Resource’ before focussing on the question at the heart of EAFS: ‘Why Environmental Art?’. The discussion will be led by two of the leading voices in Scotland on the topic - David Harding OBE, a pioneering artist and teacher in the field of social and public art, and Chris Fremantle, currently co-director of Public Art Research + Resource Scotland.

Other panellists will represent the fields of art, science, energy and politics - not to be missed by anyone interested in the future of the ‘Culture of the Land’.

Making the Most of the Coast is a joint initiative to turn the spotlight on over 200 miles of coastline in Dumfries and Galloway and is managed by Solway Firth Partnership to develop events, activities and publications. COASTAL COMMISSION

In March 2013 EAFS invited submission of ideas for projects relating to ‘Land and Energy’ from artists, environmentalists and the general public. In total we received more than 70 submissions from all around the world - we have been able to support the development of some proposals and these are featured as events/artworks in the festival. Look out for ( ) in the brochure.

EAFS aims to be a catalyst for further work in this field by A) specially created crowdfunding web platform (see EAFS website) and B) via The Archivist:

The Archivist is a travelling installation by artists Jo Hodges & Robbie Coleman that explores, expands and illuminates some of the ideas, proposals and visions submitted to EAFS. Part performance, part artwork, ‘The Archivist’ will travel the region for the four days of the festival, engaging audiences in an interactive exploration of current thinking on Art and the Environment. Solway Sea Monster Alice Francis Location: Red Haven Beach near Auchencairn. Signposted from A711 between Kirkcudbright and Dalbeattie. Latitude 54.84593 Longitude -3.83487

Following a series of community beach cleanups along the Solway coast we will bring flotsam and driftwood to Red Haven beach, and there build a giant sea monster. Over EAFS anyone, of any age or skill, is welcome to help with ideas or building of this collective artwork, at once a symbol of our consumerist folly and of reclamation.

Lie of the LandGala Film Launch Time: 7pm-9pm 27/09/2013 Location: Castle Douglas Town Hall, 1 St Andrew St, Castle Douglas, DG7 1DB

Eighteen young teenagers, a poet and a film maker spent three days finding out about the wonderful landscapes of the National Scenic Areas. A key part of EAFS is to feature the diverse arts practice around Dumfries and Galloway with the four regional districts each making a contribution: three Satellite Weekends in September will highlight Annandale and Eskdale, Nithsdale, Wigtownshire, while Stewarty will be hosting events within their area on two days of the Core Festival Weekend. The satellite weekends will demonstrate a range of practices including photography, performance, land art and sculpture. Audiences are invited to join in workshops, walks, discussions and conversations, lectures and talks, across the diverse arts and creative communities present in Dumfries and Galloway’s rich landscape.

A daring sailing race from Carsethorn to the Caul, culminating in a spectacular and symbolic finish in the heart of Dumfries. Follow boats up the Nith and gather at The Caul for a significant conclusion. Produced by artists collective The Stove.

Exhibition of Crawick Artland project plans. This is a reclamation project for the open cast mining sites near Sanquhar, led by world renowned land artist Charles Jencks. Illustrated talk at 1.30pm and guided tour to Crawick Artland site (weather and safety permitting) and/or screening of very rare footage about the work of Andy Goldsworthy at 3pm.

Over the last 2 years the ‘Base’ Youth Project have been working to transform an area of open ground in Summerhill. Inspired by a vision of the rain forest, they hired artists James Gordon and Susheila Jamieson and together have created a giant work of Land Art. Access

EAFS is an outdoor festival where we aim to make the use of natural environment. Due to the very nature of the outdoor, temporary locations of each of the commission sites and a number of the evening activities, these are not all fully accessible. An icon showing wheelchair access will be displayed on the listing for fully accessible sites. Each of the four main commissions and a number of others will be represented though film or photography on the EAFS website to ensure that those who cannot access sites are not disadvantaged.
