When Pope Benedict XVI released the third volume of his trilogy on Jesus (The Infancy Narratives, Image Books, 2012), some journalists were quick to point out his agree-ment with a scholar named Jean Daniélou surrounding the Epiphany events. Unlike the story of the Annunciation, Daniélou asserted that the adoration of the Magi “does not touch upon any essential aspect of the faith. No foundation
would be shaken if it were simply an invention of Matthew’s based upon a theological idea.” But the Pope went on to write: “Daniélou himself, though, comes to the conclusion that we are dealing here with historical events, whose theological significance was worked out by the Jewish Chris-tian community and by Matthew.” This is a key point to behold– while not of the essence of the faith, the Holy Father holds to the basic historicity of these events. Media reports that Pope Benedict denied the historicity of Epiphany are not at all supported by the facts.
On this Feast of the Epiphany, it would be helpful to review the signifi-cance of this event. True, certain aspects of this account have been pre-sented in such a familiar way that we assume the Magi arrived on Christmas Day itself, a detail that the Gospel does not explicitly indicate. Consider that Herod “ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vi-cinity two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had ascer-tained from the magi.”
This itself speaks to the event’s historicity, indicating that the magi appeared at some point in this time frame surrounding the birth of Jesus. While the Magi have been described as astrologers, in point of fact, their function was much more akin to our modern notion of as-tronomers, a decidedly different role. These were not the Jeane Dixon’s of their era, authors of the daily horoscope in the Bethlehem
Times. Their focus was scientific and something else had to motivate them beyond that. Why else would they present gifts upon their arrival?
In his engaging and readable volume on the infancy narratives, Pope Bene-dict XVI relates the research indicating that a small group of astronomers still existed in the city of Babylon at the time of Jesus’ birth. Planetary con-junction of the planets Jupiter and Saturn in the constellation Pisces oc-curred in 6 B.C.– now believed to be the actual date of Jesus; birth, and this planetary conjunction may well have been the event that pointed the Magi in the direction of Judea. This solution was proposed in 1603 A.D. by the German astronomer Johannes Kepler, who surmised that this conjunc-tion happened in 800-year intervals. In addition, a supernova exploded around that time as well, another possible “suspect” in this mystery. Ke-pler’s hypothesis has found supporters centuries later in our own day. In short, the “Babylonian astronomers were able to conclude that there had been a universally significant event: the birth in the land of the Jews of a ruler who would bring salvation.” (The Infancy Narratives, p. 99)
Through Divine Providence, could not God have used a naturally occur-ring (though extremely rare) phenomenon, one that would certainly appear to observers as a star moving? Many of you are old enough to remember

the late Dr. Karlis Kaufmanis, U of Minnesota Astronomer, who deliv-ered his fascinating lectures about the Star of Bethlehem. In the event he describes, both planets remained side by side and passed each other three times during an eight-month period. Kaufmanis argued that on the morn-ing of April 12 (in 7 or 6 B.C.) shortly before sunrise, the planets emerged in the rays of the glowing dawn and appeared in Pisces, that is, in the rec-tangular position of the zodiac sign of Pisces that the ancient Jewish as-tronomers saw as representing Palestine. The discrepancy of the year is partially due to an honest error in 525 A.D. by a monk named Dionysius. He wanted to calculate time, not from the founding of Rome, but from the birth of Christ. Trouble is, the year that he determined as 1 A.D. was actu-ally off by several years. Sadly it took a millennium to realize this.
While it may be of academic interest to discuss the various theories with respect to the infancy narratives, the spiritual significance is of paramount importance. The Church holds to the basic historical truths of the Gos-pels, even as she acknowledges that we must also take into account the in-tentions of the authors in communicating truths. Far from a detailed diary of events, the sacred authors intended to communicate the saving truths that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world, and not only of the Jews in Palestine. His salvific role is truly universal. The Magi represent the true catholicity of the Church and signal that God wills all of humanity to know the saving message of freedom found in Christ Jesus. Epiphany comes from a Greek word meaning “to shine upon” or “manifestation,” and it is profitable to reflect on the many ways in which God is manifest in our own lives. May we never lose the connection between faith and won-der. Merry Christmas!

• The Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend was ordered to pay $1.95 million in damages to a Catholic school teacher who had been dis-missed for undergoing in vitro fertilization, even though she had signed an employment agreement promising to uphold Church teaching and refused to offer any sign of remorse when it became public. IVF rou-tinely involves the destruction of multiple embryos in search of the most viable. This ruling is being appealed to a higher court and has far reaching implications for religious freedom.

RED BULL CRASHED ICE This year's Crashed Ice Event is making more extensive use of the Cathe-dral stairs as the course's starting point for the race, largely to highlight our facade with its beautiful Rose Window. Structural Engineers have assured us that the structure will not damage our stairs, also minimizing the chances for people to slip on the stairs. Additionally, we have been given assurances that John Ireland Blvd. will remain open on Sunday mornings, making it easier to access the main Cathedral parking lot. While the month presents some challenges, the benefits outweigh the challenges.

Financial Report – January, 2015
At the beginning of the New Year, 1915, the Executive Committee for the Building of the New Cathedral of Saint Paul presented the Archbishop with “a detailed statement of the cost of the Cathedral to date; the total being the sum of $1,402,836.17. Of this sum $94,896.29 was spent for the site and the changing of Summit Ave . . . . The amount spent on construc-tion work for the building itself was $1,223, 090.42. There is still to be expended on the contracts now in force, the sum of $173,962.74. Of this about $70,000.00 is in sight, leaving a deficit of about $100,000.00. . . . The accumulations and resources of the Diocese are at an end, for the present, and a discussion ensued as to the best means of raising this sum, so as to have the Cathedral free from debt when it is opened on Palm Sunday, March 28, 1915.” Characteristically Ireland set about raising the funds: he would have a plan within weeks to raise the funds.
While concerns about the deficit occupied the Archbishop, the completion of the grand steps occupied Masqueray and the granite contractors Clark and McCormack. McCormack records work done on the steps with Frank Slifer, one of Masqueray’s associates. McCormack suggested that the steps should be 2 feet wide. But Slifer, on Masqueray’s order, writes that the steps will be 2 feet 6 inches wide to complete the planned design for the frontal approach to the Cathedral. Inches were important to the design of what would be Masqueray’s Beaux-artes masterpiece. So stone by stone, inches given and inches taken away, 51 perfectly designed, beautifully pro-portioned steps rose one by one to the main entrance of the New Cathe-dral of Saint Paul. ACSP.

Project Home. The Cathedral of Saint Paul opened its doors to the first Centennial Works of Mercy Project, Project Home, on Friday, January 2. Standing at the opening of our Centennial year, 2015, Project Home allows us to begin celebrating by honoring the mission of charity that informs our Catholic faith. 21 days to Centennial – 2015. What can you expect? You will soon see banners mounted on the façade of the Cathedral—the first public statement of the Centennial—and a colorful welcome to all. Thousands who come to view and photograph Crashed Ice will see the racers swoop down the front steps of the Cathedral up and over the bridge across Summit Avenue—and they will see the banners. They will take photos and send them to family and friends—and the media will have the message too: the Cathedral of Saint Paul invites all to Centennial – 2015. Come, join us, as we remember our 100-year history, and as we give thanks for the blessings received in those years. As the Mother Church of the Archdiocese, we invite all to celebrate--clergy, Cathedral parishioners, all parishes of the Archdiocese, friends, neighbors, visitors and tourists.
