FROM THE OGLE OFFICE

Dear friends, Priests are encouraged to form small priestly fra-ternity groups for mutual support, prayer and sociability. My own group has met monthly for many years, and we try our best to make it a priority. In fact once a year after Christmas we go to the movies together. We usually go to a multi-plex where there are many options because it’s not always easy to find one we can all agree on (sound familiar?). This year we ended up at the new Star Wars installment titled “Rogue One”. Most of us had only seen the original movie, and some the second one, but none since then. Maybe that’s why I found it hard to fol-low, although I think it had more to do with the incessant explosions and the rapid pace of the battles scenes (which were most of the film). I am neither endorsing this movie nor condemning it— I’ll leave that to the critics. On the negative side there was very little in the way of human connections or relationship development in the script. The implicit attitude that right justifies any level of violence is also questionable. On the positive side however, it was refreshing to see a story about passionate commitment to a right-eous cause without any ironic, post-modern subversion of moral principles. What does that mean? For one thing it means that Virtue really should be its own reward. It means that we humans are truly capable of coming to moral decisions that are the result not of our genes, biol-ogy or social conditions, but of a rationally-informed free decision to act for a long-term or even an eternal value, rather than for the passion of the moment. AS believers, I would suggest that, ultimately, human freedom is best exercised within a context of faith that sees the reality of the total person made in the image of God and destined for eternal life. My anecdotal observation is that the dominant current world view rejects that vision. Let us be attentive to the way the faith asks us to view the world and our lives. How?-- By getting to know better Our Lord Himself and his message to us, in prayer, Scrip-ture and liturgy. God love you, Msgr. Sean G. Ogle

Sean G. Ogle

PRAYER OF THE WEEK A Prayer for the Feast of the Epiphany Arise, shine, for the Light of the World has come! Darkness covers the earth and its people, but the radiance of God's Light burns away its shadows, illuminates the smallest corner, and heralds in the start of a new dawn, where hearts no longer fear, souls might be set free, and sister shall follow brother, nation shall follow nation, and kings and princes bow down in awe before the one who comes to reign. Arise, shine, for the Light of the World has come! Alleluia! Submitted by Elaine Rodriguez Share your favorite prayers: [email protected]
