How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Main Cover Image

Adele has featured on a past cover of Rolling Stone, and this is what inspired me. I tried to mimic her style with Hayley in the following ways:• Both wear quite natural make

up, apart from heavy eyeliner. This creates an attitude, without it being over the top or too rock-like.

• Both have messy, wavy hair. Which could also represent their attitude and their genre of music; relaxed and different.

• Both have quite serious facial expressions, with strong eye contact. This could reflect their personality and type of music; serious and soulful

• Both wear simple black clothes, in order to not detract attention from their faces.

• Another similarity is the type of shot used. I have taken a medium-close shot of Hayley, similar to the shot of Adele used on Rolling Stone.

With my cover photo I wanted to represent a young, female singer and songwriter, within the alternative genre. A real artist who came to mind was Adele, since she is independent, soulful and writes emotional songs. This is the type of artist I wanted to create with Hayley.

For the album cover, I also used a close up shot of Hayley in a similar way to the shot of Adele on her 21 album cover. I focus on the expression and make up, trying to suggest her style and individuality.

For the photos of Hayley on my magazine’s contents page and double page spread, I took consideration from my reseach into what Rolling Stone did with Adele. They featured an image of her singing, so I tried to replicate this through the inclusion of the prop of a guitar in a few of my images. Also all the photos used suggest Adele’s personality and more importantly her music, through her styling and facial expressions. I tried to do this to a similar extent with Hayley, in order to represent young, female solo artists.

Also, apart from Adele, another inspiration for my styling of Hayley was Alexa Chung, a model and television presenter. I chose her since she is well known for her individual ‘alternative’ style. I think her style fits with the genre of alternative music, so I used her as inspiration in the following ways:• Hair and make up – both have shoulder length

brown hair, which is naturally wavy and a little messy. The make up is generally natural, but with heavier eyeliner to accentuate the eyes.

• Clothes – both wear quite individual fashionable clothes, usually in darker colours and a little oversized.

• Facial expression – Both tend to look serious, but with strong eye contact.

Festival Images

With my photos relating to festivals, I wanted to represent the type of people who go to festivals. When selecting photos I was inspired to some photos featured on NME.com. The screen shots show the photos I was inspired by.

I have represented the type of people who go to festivals by considering the type of clothes and make up they wear, their age (young adults), and their reaction to music (seen in the crowd shot).

Folk Artists

One of the photos on my contents refers to a folk music artist. In order to accurately represent this genre of music I did some research and found a story on NME.com about a folk artist called Laura Marling. I took note of her characteristics in the photo used and tried to replicate this in my image of Sophie. Laura wore no make up and wore relaxed casual clothes, so I styled Sophie in this way, playing up the ‘natural’ look with no make up and casual everyday clothes. Also, the image used on NME.com involved Laura holding a guitar, so I have used the prop of an ukulele in my photo of Sophie to suggest the type of music artist she is (folk).

Indie BandAnother photo which features on my contents page is an image of a local band called ‘Indiana’. With this photo I wanted to represent an indie boy band and took inspiration from a photo which featured on one of NME’s contents pages: an image of a member of the Klaxons, a British Indie Rock band.I have tried to represent the indie rock artists in my photo in the

following ways:• Both are photos of the bands playing at a live concert, featuring

guitars and other musical instruments as props.• I have used a low angle shot in the similar way to NME, giving the

POV of an audience member at a concert.• I took in consideration the type of clothes indie-rock bands wear, and

decided on casual shirts, jackets and skinny jeans.
