HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TASKS?

Evaluation Two – Alisha Parker

Introduction• In my opinion the combination of all three of my tasks

were really effective due to the links and conventions used in all three.

• I made sure to create clear links between the three tasks and not to go off the main conventions of my genre so that I could show audiences as soon as they see any of my tasks they would know my genre.

• I will now explain all of my tasks and how the combination of the three were effective.

Influences• All the influences for my tasks came from my research. By watching

music videos from bands from my genre, looking into that bands website and digipak it really helped me with how to show a clear link between the three and also gave me ideas on what I could add into my own tasks.

• When researching I tried to look at the website, digipak and video for the same bands so I could see how others had linked up all of their products. One of the main conventions that I found was using dark colours and I actually tried to follow this. I noticed that many bands also had their own logo on all three tasks so I also followed this and by looking into other bands websites, digipaks and videos I feel as though this really did inspire my own ideas.

Influences• I think this helped me a lot as at the beginning I was

struggling with how to link the three but by the end of my research I had been inspired by others.

• I looked into the main conventions as these are really what link these products together as if you had a website that was using a bright colour and then a digipak that was only black and white you would not see the two together and would assume that the two were from different artists.

Website• With the website I tried to use conventions that I had seen

on other rock band sites. Such as having a store, social media links and a ‘about’ page. Luckily I chose a template that included many conventions that I would have had to add myself because I chose a template that linked to music.

• I made sure to use dark colours on my website because this is one of the conventions of the websites and as I had done this I knew to add this to the rest of my tasks. I noticed this during my research stage of my task, doing research into these tasks really helped me to understand and add conventions to my own work.

Website• Due to the fact that I used a template on Wix most of the

conventions of a website were already on there such as the about page and the sections ready for images to be added in. But this did limit me on what I could actually do on my site as when you choose a template to work off.

• I also made sure to create a store as this was seen on every website that I researched, this was already on the template so I did not have to add this separately. I also created my own logo to go on each product which was also added to my digipak to link the two together.

Website• The main thing that I made sure to add on to my site was

many images of my artist. A convention of a rock artist is for the front man to be slightly self centred so by showing him as the centre of attention on every task that I created it links all three together. I put many pictures of my artist on every page of my site and also created a page with images of my artist only.

Digipak• With my digipak I again used all dark colours so this is

one thing that already links in with my website. I used images where my artist was wearing black clothing and created one of my panels with a black background. This made sure that it linked in with the other tasks as I made sure to use dark colours and low key lighting in each task.

• I used the logo that I had created that I had also added to all of my products on the store page of my site. This showed the star quality as my artist now has his own products for fans to buy and wear.

Digipak• Again I also used only images of my artist on my digipak

to play with the stereotype of the typical rock star, I used images of my artist layered on two of the panels so he was repeated on top of himself, on another panel I used a close up image of my artist that focused only on him and then the logo which is my artists initials, again only focusing on him.

• I used repeated images of my artist, these images were also shown on my site, this again links the two together.

Music Video• With the music video I used the dark lighting in the low

key studio, this so far links in with all of my other tasks as I used low lighting for all of my tasks. The clothing worn in the video also fits with the photographs added on to my website and used on my digipak.

• In the video my actor was wearing sunglasses and I made sure to add a branded pair of sunglasses on to my website store. This again shows star quality because assuming that fans would enjoy watching their favourite bands fans can want things that really link to their stars.

Music Video• I concentrated solely on my actor throughout my video

and there was not even a second where my artist was not in shot, this shows that he is the most important person as there is nobody else on show and is focuses your attention on one person all the way through. This fits in with the same stereotypes and conventions that I have used in my other tasks and links all three tasks together as this is an idea that I made sure to concentrate on throughout.

All of my tasks• It makes all of the tasks more effective due to the fact that

they all link up in many different ways, when looking at the three you can see the clear links and you can see that they are all by the same artist.

• If each one of my tasks were completely different it would not look like the belonged to the same artist and would not look professional. I wanted to make my tasks look as though they would belong to a real artist and I wanted to make each one as realistic as I could. After looking at other bands I knew the conventions that I needed to use I all of my tasks and what I should always add in.

All of my tasks• Without the ancillary tasks the music video would not

have the same effect as there is not one artist that I researched that did not have their own website and digipak. I needed to link all three together because I wanted to follow conventions as best as I could.

• This makes my work more effective in my opinion and I am pleased with how well my tasks link together. I actually tried to think about different things that would link the three together and then added all of these things.

Conclusion• In conclusion I need all three tasks for my work to actually

be effective. With having three tasks it makes my work look professional and fits in with the conventions and stereotypes of typical rock bands and artists.

• I really thought about what conventions I needed to add into all of my tasks during the research stages and I made sure to add these to my work during construction to create the best effect.
