Evaluation Question 2: How effective is the combination

of your main product and the ancillary texts?

What were we trying to achieve in our main production?

Throughout the production of Entertain Me, we tried to please our audience by making it fit to the 'energy' part of Richard Dyer's theory of audience. The theory suggests that people who have had a slow or uneventful day will particularly enjoy watching films with a lot of action in them. To conform with this theory we put kidnapping and fight scenes into our film.

Film PostersOne advertising product that we created was our film

poster. The poster shows a knife, as well as Alice's ripped tshirt with blood on it. These props suggest violence and action and therefore suggest that our film contains 'energy'. I think that our poster was also effective in the way that it showed reviews about our film which would encourage people who are deciding whether or not to watch our film, to watch it. Our film poster is similar to the one for 1408 in the sense that it shows the most significant weapon of the film (in this case the noose). Weapons in any poster will suggest violence or action and so prepare the audience for these themes.

Radio TrailersWithin the The Hunger Games radio trailer that I found (1:08 to 1:16 of

the clip), they included a sound clip of the protagonist screaming “I volunteer”. The tone of the character's voice suggests danger and some kind of fight and therefore suggests that the film contains action and ‘energy’. We tried to recreate this as our radio trailer also includes significant sound clips such as Rosie's "I'm not going to kill her, I can't you sick freak" line, where her tone of voice and words suggest that she is trying to fight back. I believe that our radio trailer is effective because of this, as it may be perceived as exciting by our potential audience. If our audience have had a boring day then they will want to see something exciting and so would watch our film.

ConclusionBoth our film poster and radio trailer suggest themes of violence and action, which is what we have in our film. Therefore our advertising products should give our potential audience the right idea about what happens in our film. They also both conform to Richard Dyer’s ‘energy’ part of his theory and so anyone from our potential audience who has had a slow day should particularly enjoy our film.
