Season’s Greetings!
Remembering Jared Jacobsen
On a relatively warm November 23rd evening, about 600 admirers and friends gath-
ered to celebrate the life and work of Jared Jacobsen. In the photo by Robert Lang
above, Civic Organist Emeritus Robert Plimpton plays for a choir made up of singers
from 1st Lutheran Church, St. James by the Sea, La Jolla Presbyterian, The Bishop’s
School, and others—led by Christine Micu of The Bishop’s School.
Raúl Prieto Ramírez shared the organ bench with Bob Plimpton, performing Ravel’s
Bolero with amazing stamina. Soprano Martha Jane Weaver, a long-time performance
partner with Jared, sang Precious Lord, Take My Hand.
More than $1,000 was contributed by attendees to the newly-created Jared Jacobsen
Education Fund that the Spreckels Organ Society will use to expand outreach to stu-
dents of all ages.

Dear Music Lovers,
As 2019 ends, it’s time to
look back and plan ahead. Many
exciting projects are coming in
the new year of 2020!
In 2018 -my arrival year- it
was the time to go through all
the current Spreckels programs
January to December and learn
what was already in place and
working well, not wanting to “re-invent the wheel.”
In 2019 -my second year- I was thrilled to see
some of our regular events improve substantially, and
by trying new ones, I have been able to see the amaz-
ing skills many of our members and volunteers are
willing to share with our community.
2020 is the time to develop and present our audi-
ences with new and exciting projects: educational de-
velopment, evening events, new music for a wider au-
dience, crossover multi-artistic collaborations, re-
branding… it’s the time for creativity and audacity,
and everyone is welcome!
Please consider how to bring your skills and ideas.
Remember it’s not necessary to be a Board member to
volunteer and support the committees for particular
projects. You are welcome to support a project by vol-
unteering or joining a particular committee. Stay
tuned for the call and pitch in this coming year in your
own way.
Raúl Prieto Ramírez Civic Organ & Artistic Director
Dear Friends:
It was lovely to see so many of
you at the concert held in memory
of Jared Jacobsen on a beautiful No-
vember evening. We dearly miss
Jared, and know that he would be so
gratified by the contributions we
received to the educational fund in
his memory.
This year has just flown by! We
will soon be sending out the annual membership renewal
letter. Your generous contributions allow us to do so
much more than Sunday afternoon concerts.
We have increased the number of special evening
concerts, and hope to be able to show a silent movie on
Halloween, which will be on a Saturday next year.
We also are expanding the educational programs for
San Diego school children, many of whom have never
before heard the Spreckels Organ. And of course, the
San Diego International Organ Festival is made possible
every summer by your donations.
If you would like to support the Society with your
time and talent, please call our office at (619) 702-8138.
We can always use extra help with behind the scenes
work such as event planning, setting up sound and video
for concerts, and helping at the snack bar. If you have
experience in grant writing, videography, web site de-
sign and maintenance, or immigration law (temporary
work visas for our foreign guest artists), we would very
much appreciate your expertise.
Thank you so much for your support!

Launching the Jared
Jacobsen Education Fund
With Jared’s celebration concert, the Society
launched the Jared Jacobsen Education Fund.
We are grateful for Jared’s generous support of
music education during his lifetime, and hopeful that
you may share with us a commitment to developing
an expanded appreciation for music in the lives of
young people.
Donations by the audience at the Nov. 23rd concert
and gifts from members of the Spreckels Organ Soci-
ety Board of Trustees have helped build this Fund to
more than $14,000 already, encouraging the Society
to make new plans for educational outreach.
For many years, the Society has welcomed educa-
tional visits to the Pavilion by the city's fifth graders.
In 2020, more educational outreach is planned -- be-
yond the boundaries of the San Diego Unified School
District. Your support will enable us to develop Edu-
cational Programs still further:
Curriculum development for a wide range of ages
and student interests, available online.
Collaborative projects with other arts organiza-
tions that introduce students to the magic of Bal-
boa Park through different kinds of art experienc-
es, including music.
Video presentations that show the inner workings
of the organ to more people than ever.
With enthusiastic leadership from Artistic Direc-
tor Raúl, the Curatorial team, and supercharged vol-
unteers, the Society is embarking on a whole range of
educational projects that will develop our audience of
the future.
Make a donation by check either in person at a
concert or by mail to the office—be sure to write
“Education Fund” in the memo field.
In the generous spirit of Jared Jacobsen, who gave
of himself always with a smile, THANK YOU!
Wine Tour Success! We Explored
Baja’s Guadalupe Valley! Members of the Spreckels Organ Society filled up a bus
early on a Saturday morning in October for a great ad-
venture in Baja California's Guadalupe Valley. Spreck-
els Organ Society Trustee Tony Uribe made sure that
everyone got back that evening, and that they got wine
tastings, great cuisine, and a fun time. Thanks Tony,
and our member-adventurers.

Audio Tech Workshop Series launches
More than a dozen people, from age 11 to 83, attend-
ed the October 13 launch of a new workshop series that
focuses on the backstage challenge of audio work for
concerts on the Spreckels Organ. The workshops are
held once a month through 2020.
Trustee Gordon Stanley is providing a detailed sylla-
bus and teaching with the help of the Society’s audio
engineering team.
The workshops are free, and pupils are assisting the
Society with in-kind contributions of time and talent as
backstage volunteers.
It’s not too late to take advantage of this great oppor-
tunity to learn from technical professionals! The next
workshop session is Sunday, January 12, at noon. Register by sending an email to:
