BASÍLICA DE GUADALUPE

Basílica of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe) (1) – Main America’s catholic precinct and one of the most seen in the world. The Virgin of Guadalupe is celebrated on December 12.

Templo Expiatorio a Cristo Rey (2) – Also known as Ancient Basilica, this temple built in the 18th century was made to be a precinct dedicated to Virgin Guadalupe’s veneration, which in 1749 received the title of collegiate church. In 1904, is upgraded to Basilica. By half of the 20th century, the building suffered a serious structural damage that forced its closing and the construction of a larger and more modern temple. In 1979, the INAH (National Institution of Anthropol-ogy and History) and the Conference of the Mexican Episcopate (Conferencia del Episcopado Mexicano), a restoration project to avoid the building’s lost.

Capuchin’s chapel and convent (el convento y capilla de las Capuchinas) (3) – It was a convent for the capuchin nuns from 1782 to 1787. It is found aside of the old Basilica of Guadalupe.

Parish Church of Indian (Parroquia de Indios) (4) – It was constructed between 1640 and 1650. At this place, the prodigious cape was found till 1709, when it was moved to the collegiate church (which short time after would be the ancient basilica). At the beginning, it was the dwelling of Juan Diego during 17 years.

Pocito’s chapel (capilla del Pocito) (5) – It is a baroque-style temple, constructed between 1777 and 1791. In 1815, the insurgent José María Morelos was allowed, as last wish, to go to that temple and pray to the virgin of Guadalupe before being executed in a nearby population at the current district council of Ecatepec de Morelos.

Cerrito’s temple (templo del Cerrito) (6) – It was erected at the place where the Virgin María appeared to Juan Diego. In 1660, a small church was ordered to be built at this place in order to commemorate the three Virgin Guadalupe’s apparitions. At the beginning of the 17th century, a small cemetery was built.

Tepeyac’s cemetery (cementerio del Tepeyac) (7) – Only viceregal period churchyard. Liberals, conservatives and architects of the “porfiriato”, painters, musicians and poets, romantics and idealists, heroes and villains can be found there. Tepeyac’s cemetery is a set of historical and artistic monuments which represent an example of the feeling of the period and they conserve their anthropologyc content and artistic validity till today, becoming into the city’s and country’s cultural heritage.

Museum of the Basilica of Guadalupe (Museo de la Basílica de Guadalupe) (8) – Its collection is formed by 1564 pieces. This artistic tradition belonging to the virgin of Guadalupe is the most important due to the fact that it includes a great number of paintings and numerous artistic expressions (of religious and civil subject, but pertaining mainly to the virgin of Guadalupe): sculpture, mixed techniques, engravings, gold or silver works, applied arts, literature and architecture. The first copies of this believe belonging to that virgin, are taken from the original and date back to the 17th century.
