Large Conference (LC)

1 DefinitionThe Large Conference (LC) feature enables a subscriber acting as the conference ini-tiator to interconnect other subscribers in a conference group. All subscribers participat-ing in a large conference can speak to each other at the same time. A large conferencemay comprise up to 32 subscribers.

Operator benefits– attractive feature generating additional traffic and therefore greater revenue from call

charges

Subscriber benefits– the conference initiator can connect the conference participators as required– all exchanges of information and ideas are experienced directly by the individual

conference parties– savings in time and money, e.g. by not having to travel to business meetings

Standards

The feature is based on the following standards:– ETS 300 183– ETS 300 185– ITU-T I.254.1

2 Mode of operationA subscriber authorized to use the Large Conference (LC) feature can initiate a con-ference as the conference initiator. The other conference participators do not requireany specific authorization. Domestic and international subscribers alike can be linked to-gether in a large conference. The conference initiator and the conference subscribers ina large conference have different authorizations.

A conference initiator can perform the following actions:• Initiate a large conference from the idle state• Initiate a large conference from an existing call• Add further subscribers to the large conference

(up to a maximum of 32 conference subscribers)• Disconnect a large conference

An analog subscriber acting as the conference initiator can also perform the followingaction:• Initiate a large conference from a three-party conference (TPC)

An ISDN subscriber acting as the conference initiator can also perform the following ac-tions:• Configure a conference call to hold• Split individual conference subscribers from the conference• Isolate (mute) individual conference subscribers in the conference• Return individual isolated conference subscribers to the conference• Release a conference subscriber

A conference subscriber can perform the following actions during a conference:– Configure his or her conference call to hold (e.g. for a separate call setup or to ac-

cept a waiting call)– Return to the conference– Disconnect his or her connection to the conference (the conference initiator receives

a party disconnect indication)

A conference subscriber may not initiate any further conferences (even a three-partyconference).

Each subscriber included by the conference initiator in a conference receives a party IDnumber from the EWSD network node. In case of ISDN, this is sent to the conferenceinitiator’s terminal device. Each conference subscriber is thereby unambiguously identi-fied. This assignment remains the same throughout the entire conference.

An ISDN subscriber acting as the conference initiator can administer more than oneconference with the use of the functional protocol. In this case a conference identifica-tion number is assigned by the EWSD network node in addition to the party ID. Thisnumber is also sent to the conference initiator’s terminal device. If the keypad protocolis used, only one conference can be administered and no conference identification num-ber is sent.

Large Conference (LC)

Initiating a large conference from the idle state– Analog

The conference initiator initiates a large conference by entering the appropriate ac-cess code. He or she then dials the directory number of the first conference sub-scriber. The two subscribers are connected together in a conference circuit when thedialed subscriber answers.

– ISDNA large conference is initiated with the functional protocol by entering “create con-ference” into the terminal or with an appropriate keypad input. If the functional pro-tocol is used, the conference initiator can also enter the maximum number ofconference subscribers desired. If no entry is made, the system defines a defaultvalue that is less than or equal to the maximum value. The system then reserves thenecessary conference resources for the requested conference and assigns them tothe conference initiator.

Other subscribers can only be included by configuring the conference to hold.

Initiating a large conference from an existing call– Analog

The conference initiator can initiate a large conference from an existing call bymeans of a hook flash (brief interruption of the subscriber loop) and entry of the ac-cess code. Instead of a hook flash, procedure figure control is also possible. Theoriginal called party receives a hold tone or a recorded announcement. Once a con-ference circuit has been successfully seized, the party originally called by the con-ference initiator is switched to a free conference port. If the conference initiator wasthe called party, the conference port of the original calling party has the function ofthe called party.

– ISDNThe conference initiator can initiate a large conference from an existing call bymeans of the functional protocol or an appropriate keypad input. Once the requestfor a large conference has been received, a second speech channel is seized fromthe LTG of the conference initiator to the EWSD switching network. As soon as a freeconference circuit is seized, the remaining party in the originally private call is auto-matically reswitched to a conference port. After the switching, this subscriber is in-formed on the display of the terminal device - only in case of an ISDN user - that heor she has become a conference subscriber.

Adding further subscribers to the large conference(up to a maximum of 32 conference subscribers)– Analog

The conference initiator disconnects from the conference by means of a hook flashand then hears a dial tone. The next subscriber can then be dialed. Once this sub-scriber answers, the conference initiator includes him or her in the conference bymeans of a hook flash and by dialing a procedure figure.

The fact that the conference initiator sets up a large conference sequentially means thatonly the desired parties actually participate in the conference. This is ensured by theconference initiator first speaking alone with each subscriber and then deciding whetheror not to include him or her in the conference. If a subscriber is not to be included, theconference initiator goes on-hook and is then automatically called back by the system. This also applies in case that the subscriber is busy or does not answer. If the confer-ence initiator goes off-hook during the return call, he or she is again connected to the

Large Conference (LC) InformationAnalog/ISDN/GeoCENTREX

conference subscribers via the conference circuit. The return call is limited in time. If theconference initiator does not go off-hook within this time, the conference is ended.– ISDN

The conference initiator can include additional subscribers in a conference bymeans of the “add conference subscribers” function, provided that the maximumnumber of conference subscribers has not yet been reached. Subscribers cannot beincluded until the call to the subscriber in question is in the talk or held state. Theprivate call is released once the subscriber in question has been switched over tothe conference. The conference initiator has the same status as before the subscrib-er was included.

The conference initiator can include an incoming call in the conference in the same way.

The conference initiator toggles between lines to switch to the conference call.

Disconnecting a large conference

Once the conference initiator goes on-hook, the conference is ended. All connections tothe conference subscribers are disconnected and all seized conference resources arereleased.

If a conference subscriber goes on-hook during the conference, his or her connection isdisconnected. The conference remains active. The remaining parties are informed bymeans of a brief information tone.

Analog only: Initiating a large conference from a three-party conference

Initiating a large conference directly from a three-party conference is only possible withterminal equipment supporting dual-tone multifrequency dialing (DTMF). If devices withpulse dialing are used, at least one of the existing connections has to be released. Eachauthorized subscriber can initiate a large conference by means of a hook flash and entryof the access code. Announcements to held calls are released. The procedure figurecontrol is mandatory for all types of three-way calls. Once a conference circuit has beensuccessfully seized, the two connections are switched to the conference circuit andthese subscribers are connected together as a result. The conference initiator receivesa second speech channel and a dial tone. He or she can then add more conference sub-scribers to the conference. Passive subscribers in a three-party conference are prevent-ed from converting directly to a large conference. If a passive party wishes to act as theconference initiator, the passive call must first be released.

ISDN only: Configuring a conference call to hold

The conference initiator can configure his or her conference call to hold in order to setup another call to be included in the conference, for example, or to accept a waiting call. While the conference initiator’s line is in the held state, the remaining conference partiesare connected together and can communicate without any restrictions.

ISDN only: Splitting individual conference subscribers from the conference

The conference initiator can remove a conference subscriber from the conference andestablish a private call to this subscriber with the “split conference subscriber” functionand the party ID. When the functional protocol is used, the conference identificationnumber also has to be entered. A split subscriber can be added to the conference again.

Large Conference (LC)

ISDN only: Isolating (muting) individual conference subscribers in the conference

By using the “isolate conference subscriber” function and dialing the party ID, the con-ference initiator can temporarily exclude a conference subscriber from the communica-tion with other conference subscribers. This disconnects the speech path of theconference subscriber. The connection to the large conference remains intact. The sub-scriber hears a special information tone and receives an indication on the display of hisor her terminal device (only in case of ISDN users). The other subscribers do not receivea special information tone.

ISDN only: Returning individual isolated conference subscribers to a conference

The conference initiator can return an isolated conference subscriber to the speechcommunication with the “return subscriber to conference” function and the relevant partyID. The speech path of the conference subscriber is then activated once again.

ISDN only: Disconnecting conference subscribers

With the “disconnect conference subscriber” function and the relevant party ID, the con-ference initiator can disconnect a particular conference subscriber from the conference.

Access code

The access code for subscriber controlled input consists of a maximum of 6 charactersor, for GeoCENTREX subscribers, a maximum of 5 characters. It can be formed fromthe symbols ★ , # and the service code (SC) with the digits 0 to 9. The operator canspecify the character strings for the access code.

Differences by pulse dialing

The selected digits are not obligatory; other digits can be input (depending on the exist-ing numbering plan).– 1111 at the beginning of an input in place of ★

– 1112 at the beginning of an input in place of #– 1113 at the beginning of an input in place of ★ #– ★ as a disconnecting signal after the service code, not relevant– # after the subscriber controlled input, not relevant

Acknowledgments after subscriber controlled input

The following tones, announcements and display texts are examples and can be admin-istrated by the operator. The display texts can be changed to suit individual projects.

The subscriber controlled input can be acknowledged by:• Tones

– ringing tone– acceptance tone– subscriber busy tone or number unobtainable tone (NU)

• Announcements– subscriber controlled input successful– subscriber controlled input unsuccessful– feature is already activated– feature is not activated– feature is not available– wrong input

• Display texts (only in ISDN)– wrong input– not authorized– request rejected– successful– unsuccessful– not available

Charges for feature input and feature usage

The charges for operator inputs, successful subscriber controlled input and featureusage are assigned to the subscriber.

The following call charge registration is possible:– Facility input by operator (FAIO)– Facility input by subscriber (FAIS)– Facility usage (FAU)

Call charges for connections

When the large conference feature is activated from an existing two-party call, interme-diate metering is performed and an additional call data record produced.

The conference initiator (either the calling party (A) or the called party (B)) is charged forthe entire conference with the exception of the following case:– If the conference is called by the called party (B), the remaining charges for the orig-

inal call (call A-B) are allocated to the calling party (A).

The total charges result from the individual charges for:– Seizure of the conference circuit– Calls between the conference initiator and the called parties (B) before the confer-

ence is started (for a conference called from an existing call)– Call legs between the conference circuit and the individual conference subscribers.

Call charges for connections are assigned as follows:– the calling subscriber pays the charges for the connection up to the called subscriber

6 RequirementsHardware

The large conference feature requires a conference unit (COU) for its implementation. The unit is installed in an LTG. The capacity stage of an EWSD network node with con-ference units depends on the number of subscribers authorized to use the feature andthe volume of conference traffic to be handled.

There are two different types of module for the conference unit:• COUB conference unit

Up to four COUB conference units can be installed in an LTG (line/trunk group withB or C function). The module has four independent conference circuits connectedtogether to form a conference unit.– Conference circuit:

At least one conference circuit is required per conference. This is assigned to theconference initiator. Each conference circuit has eight assignable ports. Up toeight conference connections can be held or linked together using this circuit. Theconference signal is generated from the speech signal of the three “loudest” con-ference subscribers only. None of these three hears his or her own signal, onlythe summation signal of the other two “loudest” parties.

– Linking conference circuits together:In order to establish large conferences (more than eight parties), up to four con-ference circuits are automatically linked together. By cascading the conferencecircuits, a maximum of 26 conference subscribers is obtained.
