F-35 Lightning IISecuring Peace Through Strength

The latest chapter in Lockheed Martin’s history of building the finest military aircraft is the F-35 Lightning II – the world’s only 5th Generation multirole fighter. With unprecedented situational awareness, agility and interoperability, it is the fighter of choice for the world’s most capable air forces. Only the F-35 ensures the Republic of Korea’s national security and industrial leadership.

With the F-35, Korea adds a fundamental deterrent to its military fleet. It equips the Republic of Korea Air Force with unmatched combat capability immediately upon delivery and provides 21st century capabilities needed to counter current and future threats to the Korean peninsula. The F-35 delivers the lowest overall life-cycle costs, makes existing platforms effective and acts as a force multiplier for current Korean forces. The benefits can be defined as:

• Unmatched operational capability • 5th Generation capability at or below 4th Generation cost • Advanced 5th Generation technologies for Korea’s industrial future • Interoperability with the United States and other regional forces • Proactive, strategic deterrent that enhances regional security

F-35 Lightning II – Securing Peace Through Strength

2

The F-35 Lightning II represents the pinnacle of more than 50 years of fighter technology development. Designed to dominate the skies, the F-35 combines the 5th Generation characteristics of radar evading stealth, supersonic speed and extreme agility with the most powerful and comprehensive integrated sensor package of any multirole fighter aircraft in history.

The all-aspect, advanced stealth enables the F-35 to dramatically reduce the detection and engagement ranges of enemy defense systems and aircraft. Fundamental design features like the shape, embedded antennas, aligned edges, internal weapons, fuel and special coatings all contribute to its very low observable (VLO) stealth capability that cannot be retrofitted – 5th Generation capability is designed-in from the beginning. Advanced avionics give the pilot real-time access to battlespace information with spherical coverage and an unparalleled ability to dominate the tactical environment.

As a fully comprehensive package, the F-35 has built-in sustainment that establishes new levels of operational readiness. Aircraft share common parts, support equipment and technical data, yielding greater reliability and long-term cost savings. Plus the F-35’s strong global partnership and broad industrial base ensure affordability through economies of scale.

5th Generation Fighters Make Earlier Generations Seem Obsolete

Legacy Platforms vs. 5th Generation Capabilities

4

The F-35’s 5th Generation technology gives nations the tactical airpower advantage they need to defeat ever-growing 21st century threats. With aging legacy fighter fleets, upgrades are essential to keeping a military strong.

The F-35 provides a decisive operational advantage through the ability to control highly defended airspace. Stealth and advanced technologies enable an F-35 pilot to see the enemy before the enemy sees them – securing air dominance.

Data collected by the F-35’s next-generation avionics and sensors can be immediately shared with commanders at sea, in the air or on the ground, providing an instantaneous, high-fidelity view of ongoing operations. This makes the F-35 Lightning II a formidable force multiplier – providing actionable threat and targeting information to legacy aircraft and strengthening the entire team.

This unmatched situational awareness, along with the aircraft’s extreme agility, increased payload, acceleration and stealth, provides a tactical advantage over all adversary aircraft.

Superior 5th Generation Capability at or Below 4th Generation Cost

No Other Fighter Provides the Value That the F-35 DeliversThe F-35 is the logical next step because it provides superior 5th Generation capabilities at a cost comparable to or less than similarly equipped advanced 4th Generation fighters. Its efficiencies keep life-cycle costs low. For example, as it relates to operational effectiveness, four F-35s perform the same sustained combat air patrol (CAP) mission as nine 4th Generation aircraft – using one-fourth the fuel and fewer pilots. Other sustainment advantages include:

• Reliability and maintainability are two-times better than legacy aircraft • Performance-based logistics reduce overall life-cycle costs up to 20 percent over 30 years • Provides increased mission readiness over legacy aircraft • Global common spares pool optimizes spares availability • Integrated training system produces mission-qualified pilots and maintainers in less time and with higher levels of proficiency than legacy systems

The advanced capabilities of a 5th Generation fighter inherently provide more value. Based on the interoperability of the platform and by providing joint force support, the F-35 makes legacy platforms effective and increases the overall efficiency of an air force.

Advanced 5th Generation Technologies for Korea’s Industrial FutureThe F-35 program was designed for extensive international cooperation – both in manufacturing and sustainment. Lockheed Martin is a proven and dependable long-term industrial partner based on its work on the T-50, FA-50 and KF-16 platforms. This strategic industrial partnership extends to the F-35 program. The innovative offset opportunities provide robust technical capabilities for Korean industry and involvement in a fighter production program for the next 30-plus years.

The Future Is Now

F-35 – Delivering the Edge

The fully combat-capable F-35 will be ready for delivery in 2016 – and program progress to date confirms this readiness. Korea will benefit from $50 billion in international development efforts and the commonality that has been designed into production of the aircraft. With more than 200 F-35s estimated to be delivered by 2016 to ten countries, the cadence will be established to meet the needs of the ROKAF.

As the world’s only 5th Generation multirole fighter, the F-35 delivers the competitive edge to truly establish air dominance. The ROKAF will have unmatched operational capability, leading-edge technology, interoperability with United States’ and regional forces and a strategic deterrent for regional security – all at or below 4th Generation costs. The F-35 is more than the most innovative multirole fighter in the world – it’s the fighter that enables Korea to preserve security for decades to come.
