HOUSING GUIDEw h a t y o u c a n d o

1. Choose the right living arrangement for you

2. Choose the right roommates for you

3. Stay calm

You may switch roommates and apartments five times in one month. Just as you’re about to sign, someone will drop out or someone will jump in; either way a month of planning can—and proba-bly will—disintegrate in a matter of hours.

Half of the battle is deciding where and how you want to live. Choosing the right size, quality, and location is, in my opinion, the best first step. If you know how you want to live, your friends who want to live similarly will gravitate towards you.

Once you know how you want to live, identify the friends you think you will live with best. Find out who you think has the same living standards, sleep schedule, and “goes out” in a similar way. Identify qualities you think are important and measure up your closest friends. Everyone wants to live with their best friends but sometimes that idea is just unrealistic. People live differently. It is important to remember you will spend an entire academic year—including finals—living in close quarters and you do not want to jeopardize your friendship. Aim to live comfortably the way that you want. Maybe your best friend is a perfect match for you and if not, he or she will probably only be one block away.

Even if you know your plan and know your ideal roommates, living arrangements will undoubt-edly fall apart and reform faster than the liquid android in Terminator. The third step is staying calm. While getting an apartment is a time-crunch, you will live somewhere. Do not take it personally if your first choice of friends gets an apartment without you. There is simply limited space and some people know exactly where they want to live. You will probably still live with your good friends, even if they weren’t your first pick. Remember, the important thing is that you can live with them and part of living with someone is conflict resolution. If you demonstrate that you can handle the stressful process of organizing living arrangements well, you’ll have the pick of the litter as your new roommates.

A. Well now you do!

& Q A ParkingQ. What type of parking can I find on campus?

A. The Parking Service Office provides surface parking lots, parking structures and restricted areas such as the malls and loading zones.

Q. OK! I want to register my car. How do I know what parking best suits me?

A. We have more than 20 parking facilities on campus, but instead of giving you a list, we’ll just give you a map of these facilities.

Q. I’m really interested now. How can I contact the Parking Service Office?

A. You can either call Parking Services (414) 288-6911 or call Public Safety at (414) 288-6800.

Q. How do I use this parking service?

A. Simply register your vehicle with the Parking Services Office.

Q. I don’t have a car, but my parents are coming to visit me. Do they have to register their car too?

A. No. We provide visitor parking for these types of occasions. Structure 1, located at 749 N. 16th Street and Wells Street Structure, located at 1240 W. Wells St., have been designated as the university’s visitor parking facilities. The parking rates vary, depending on the day and time.

What you can do:1. Choose the right liv-ing arrangement for you

2. Choose the right Roommates for you

3. Stay calm What you can do:1. Choose the right living ar-rangement for you2. Choose the right Roommates for you3. Stay calm

You may switch roommates and apartments fi ve times in one month. Just as youʼre

about to sign, someone will drop out or someone will jump in; either way a month

of planning can—and probably will—disinte-grate in a matter of hours.

Half of the battle is deciding where and how you want to live. Choosing the right

size, quality, and location is, in my opinion, the best fi rst step. If you know how you

want to live, your friends who want to live similarly will gravitate towards you.

Once you know how you want to live, iden-tify the friends you think you will live with best. Find out who you think has the same

living standards, sleep schedule, and “goes out” in a similar way. Identify qualities you think are important and measure up your

closest friends. Everyone wants to live with their best friends but sometimes that idea is just unrealistic. People live differently. It is important to remember you will spend an entire academic year—including fi nals—liv-ing in close quarters and you do not want to jeopardize your friendship. Aim to live

comfortably the way that you want. Maybe your best friend is a perfect match for you and if not, he or she will probably only be

one block away.Even if you know your plan and know your ideal roommates, living arrangements will undoubtedly fall apart and reform faster than the liquid android in Terminator. The third step is staying calm. While getting an

apartment is a time-crunch, you will live somewhere. Do not take it personally if your fi rst choice of friends gets an apart-ment without you. There is simply limited space and some people know exactly

where they want to live. You will probably still live with your good friends, even if they werenʼt your fi rst pick. Remember, the im-portant thing is that you can live with them and part of living with someone is confl ict resolution. If you demonstrate that you can handle the stressful process of organizing living arrangements well, youʼll have the pick of the litter as your new roommates.
