    The Edwardian Silhouette

    Edwardian undergarmentswere intricately created toprovide women with astandardized figure that was

    considered fashionable. The S-Shaped corset provided

    women with the desired lookof a large Monobosom and a16 waist.

    An Edwardian womans

    undergarments consisted of acorset, corset cover, camisole,a pair of drawers, cottonpetticoats, and flannelpetticoats. 13

    World War I

    During the War, women enteredthe workforce to fill jobs leftopen by soldiers. After the warwomen continued to work

    outside of the home. Womens fashion altered to suit

    the workforce, constrictiveundergarments such aswhalebone corsets wereabandoned to allow for an easeof movement

    Also with the lack of men due tothe war and its aftermath,women began wearing morealluring clothing to attract a

    husband.11

    allowed more women

    and the 19th Amendment The ratification of the

    19th Amendment in1920 was a large leap

    forward for WomensRights.

    Women soon beganwearing loose pantsuitscalled pajama suits, a

    direct result of the newlygained right to vote andthe strong cries forfurther femaleempowerment.

    Prohibition Due to Prohibition,

    drinking took place inthe home and womenbecame included in

    drinking. Women soon began

    drinking in public atSpeakeasies.

    This new social freedomwas matched in fashionwith new styles thatwere more scandalous,revealing, and freeing.9

    continued to rapidly change.

    Hemlines rose from an inch below theknee to knee-length

    Waistlines dropped to the hips and then

    disappeared altogether creating a shiftdress

    Flapper Fashion

    The Symbol of the Roaring Twenties, theFlapper, emerged in 1926 and embodied thedecades modern fashion elements such asshort sleek hair, a short shapeless dress, anda flat chest, and exposed limbs.

    Flappers had a reputation that added to theirstyle as well.

    Flappers smoked from long cigarette holders,applied makeup in public, and danced to jazzwith reckless abandonment of propriety.
