THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS

According to the Eastern Fathers, the meaning of Christmas is summed up in the fol-

lowing phrase: God humbled Himself and became man, in order to make man god. Not an

almighty god, or moral, or good, or kind, but a god who can love, be humble and be sacri-

ficed so he is resurrected, as was the case with Jesus Christ. The birth of Christ in the heart

of man, the experience of inner peace which is truly instilled wherever Christ is born, are the

core of the Christmas feast and the summary of Orthodox Theology.

It is truly paradoxical and also indicative of western culture that the symbol, the image that dominates

these days on the planet, is not that of the homeless and needy Christ, but the exuberant and overwhelming Santa

Claus. It is also challenging that major American journals these days, instead of respecting the one Person cele-

brating His birthday, publish all kinds of headlines. They sow doubt in people’s hearts if the historical Jesus has

something in common with Christ declared by the Apostles, if He was indeed God, and if Mary indeed Virgin ....

Christmas is the ultimate manifestation of God's love. Love and especially this divine love, can not be coldly

probed by one’s brain, but can be felt, experienced with all his existence in silence and glorification.

In order for the believer to be able to feel that God is being born in the manger of his heart among the

beasts of one’s passions and desires, he must purify himself using, especially forty days before the Feast, three

powerful medications: fasting, confession and prayer. Fasting is of particular importance to the Orthodox Church.

About two hundred days a year, an Orthodox abstains from meat and dairies. Christmas lent is not just an absti-

nence from some foods, nor is it a diet. It is not negative but very positive. The believer, lacking in meat, tries to

appreciate and respect the "meat" and the entire inanimate nature with which it is related and from which it feeds.

At the same time, the believer confesses in order to participate in the table of God. In the East confession

and the spiritual father are of paramount importance. Confession is not tantamount to an apology or interrogation

where appropriate penalties are imposed to mitigate the injured righteousness of God. God is love, and sin in Or-

thodoxy is not a legal wrong or an offense, but it is identical to the sickness of soul and body. Sin in ancient Greek

means failure. I do not use love in order to love my fellow man, but in order to adore myself. The Church is the

hospital and the confessor is the father, the doctor who has not only knowledge but also experience how man can

be cured. That is why, in confession, the priest is not hiding behind a curtain, but sits next to the believer and dis-

cusses the problems with him, as he discusses with his son the issues that concern him. In the end he recom-

mends appropriate medications depending on the person's exclusive character. In this way, the believer does not

attempt to uproot the passions, which are the inherent forces of the soul but to transform them.

Christmas is therefore the day when Christ Himself is born in the heart of every believer. And when Christ

is born in one’s heart, then all the material goods for which so much emphasis is placed by the civilized world are

of relative importance. The true Happiness, the real Joy, the real Peace are flooding soul and body. The birth of

Jesus Christ didn’t take place once two thousand years ago. Christ is born today! "Christ is born, glorify! Today

(and not yesterday ...) He is born of the Virgin! ".

Το νοημα των χριστουγεννων

Σύμφωνα με τους Πατέρες της Ανατολής το νόημα των Χριστουγέννων συνοψίζεται στην εξής φράση: ο

Θεός έγινε ταπεινός άνθρωπος, για να γίνει ο άνθρωπος θεός.. Οχι θεός παντοδύναμος, ούτε απλά ηθικός, καλός ή

ευγενικός, αλλά θεός που μπορεί να αγαπήσει, να ταπεινωθεί και να θυσιαστεί για να αναστηθεί και να κατακτήσει

την αιωνιότητα, όπως συνέβη και με τον Ιησού Χριστό. Η γέννηση του Χριστού στην καρδιά του ανθρώπου, η

εμπειρία της εσωτερικής ειρήνης την οποία όντως φέρνει όπου γεννιέται ο Χριστός, αποτελούν τον πυρήνα της

γιορτής των Χριστουγέννων και την περίληψη της ορθόδοξης Θεολογίας.

Είναι πραγματικά παράδοξο αλλά και ενδεικτικό της δυτικής κουλτούρας πρώτον ότι το σύμβολο, η εικόνα,

που κυριαρχεί αυτές τις μέρες στον πλανήτη, δεν είναι αυτή του άστεγου και άπορου Χριστού που γιορτάζει αλλά

του πληθωρικού και καταναλωτικού Santa Claus. Ακόμη, είναι προκλητικό ότι τα μεγαλύτερα σε κυκλοφορία

αμερικάνικα περιοδικά, τέτοιες ημέρες, αντί να σεβασθούν το Πρόσωπο που γιορτάζει τα γενέθλιά Του,

δημοσιεύουν πρωτοσέλιδα άρθρα ενσπείροντας στις καρδιές την αμφιβολία εάν ο ιστορικός Ιησούς έχει κάτι κοινό

με το Χριστό που κήρυξαν οι απόστολοι, αν Αυτός ήταν όντως Θεός και αν η Μαρία όντως Παρθένος….

Τα Χριστούγεννα αποτελούν κορυφαία εκδήλωση αγάπης του Θεού. Την αγάπη και ιδιαίτερα αυτή τη θεϊκή

αγάπη, δεν μπορεί κανείς να την αναλύσει ψυχρά με τον εγκέφαλό του, αλλά προσπαθεί να την αισθανθεί, να τη

βιώσει με όλη του την ύπαρξη, σιωπώντας και δοξολογώντας.

Προκειμένου στην Ανατολή να μπορέσει ο πιστός να νοιώσει το Θεό γεννημένο στο στάβλο της καρδιάς

του ανάμεσα στα κτήνη των παθών και των επιθυμιών του, καθαρίζει τον εαυτό του χρησιμοποιώντας, ιδιαίτερα τις

σαράντα μέρες που προηγούνται της Εορτής, τρία φάρμακα: τη νηστεία, την εξομολόγηση και την προσευχή. Η

νηστεία έχει ιδιαίτερη σημασία στην Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία. Διακόσιες περίπου μέρες το χρόνο ο Ορθόδοξος νηστεύει

από κρέας και γάλα. Η νηστεία προ των Χριστουγέννων δεν συνιστά απλά αποχή από ορισμένα φαγητά ούτε

ταυτίζεται με τη δίαιτα. Δεν έχει αρνητικό χαρακτήρα αλλά κατεξοχήν θετικό. Ο πιστός στερούμενος από το κρέας,

προσπαθεί να εκτιμήσει, να σεβαστεί το «κρέας» και ολόκληρη την άψυχη φύση με την οποία είναι συγγενής αλλά

και από την οποία τρέφεται.

Παράλληλα ο πιστός προκειμένου να συμμετάσχει στο τραπέζι του Θεού εξομολογείται. Στην Ανατολή η

εξομολόγηση και ο πνευματικός πατέρας έχουν εξέχουσα σημασία. Η εξομολόγηση δεν ισοδυναμεί με μια απολογία

ή ανάκριση όπου επιβάλλονται οι κατάλληλες ποινές για να εξευμενιστεί η πληγωμένη δικαιοσύνη του Θεού. Ο

Θεός είναι αγάπη και η αμαρτία στην Ορθοδοξία δεν αποτελεί νομικό πταίσμα ή αδίκημα, αλλά ταυτίζεται με την

αρρώστια της ψυχής και του σώματος. Αμαρτία στα ελληνικά σημαίνει αστοχία. Δε χρησιμοποιώ την αγάπη για να

αγαπήσω το συνάνθρωπό μου, αλλά για να λατρεύσω το διχασμένο και ετοιμόρροπο ψευδοείδωλο του εαυτού

μου. Η Εκκλησία είναι το νοσοκομείο και ο πνευματικός είναι ο πατέρας, ο ιατρός που δεν διαθέτει μόνο γνώσεις,

αλλά και πείρα για το πώς μπορεί ο άνθρωπος να θεραπευθεί. Γι΄ αυτό και κατά την εξομολόγηση ο ιερέας δεν

κρύβεται πίσω από ένα παραπέτασμα, αλλά κάθεται δίπλα στον πιστό και συζητά τα προβλήματα μαζί του, όπως

συζητά με το γιό του τα θέματα που τον απασχολούν. Στο τέλος συστήνει κατάλληλα φάρμακα ανάλογα με την

προσωπική ιδιοσυγκρασία του πιστού. Με τον τρόπο αυτό ο πιστός δεν προσπαθεί να ξεριζώσει τα πάθη, που

αποτελούν έμφυτες δυνάμεις της ψυχής αλλά να τα μεταμορφώσει.

Τα Χριστούγεννα είναι συνεπώς η μέρα κατά την οποία γεννάται ο ίδιος ο Χριστός στην καρδιά κάθε

πιστού. Και όταν ο Χριστός γεννηθεί στην καρδιά, τότε όλα τα υλικά αγαθά για τα οποία τόση έμφαση δίνεται στον

πολιτισμένο κόσμο, έχουν σχετική σημασία. Η πραγματική Ευτυχία, η πραγματική Χαρά, η πραγματική Ειρήνη

πλημμυρίζουν την ψυχή και το Σώμα. Η γέννηση του Ιησού Χριστού δεν έγινε μόνον πριν δύο χιλιάδες χρόνια. Ο

Χριστός γεννάται σήμερα! “Χριστός γεννάται δοξάσατε! Σήμερον (κι όχι χτες….) γεννάται εκ Παρθένου! ”

Σασ ευχομαι ολοψυχα καλα και ευλογημενα χριστουγεννα

Centennial Album Update I am pleased to announce that the Dormition Centennial Commemorative Album will

be published and made available no later than Palm Sunday, April 1, 2018. The albums will

be sold for $50 each and 500 copies will be printed. We will host an Album Release Cocktail

Reception to celebrate its completion and acknowledge the efforts of everyone that contrib-

uted to this milestone achievement.

Publishing any centennial album is a monumental task and ours is no exception. Issues and delays did oc-

cur and caused complications. Unfortunately, a major dilemma developed when Fr. Manetas and I were not asked

to participate and add input during the process along the way. Consequently, last June when I insisted on review-

ing the 395 page draft for the first time, Father Manetas, several Parish Council members and I concluded that the

draft needed improvement and it was not ready for print. There were layout issues, lopsided presentation of

events, disproportioned chronological periods and finally design flaws. At that point, with Father’s approval, I de-

cided to assume responsibility of the album in an effort to move forward and complete it in the most expeditious

way.

A Centennial Album Editorial Board was created with experienced and qualified members. The Editorial

Board’s job will be to complete the album by Palm Sunday, April 1, 2018. Anargyros Sparages, a long time parish-

ioner, former Parish Council Member and Treasurer, has agreed to serve as the Editorial Board’s chairman.

Narge will lead a 5 member Editorial Board including Father Manetas, Diane Karavitis, Bill Galatis and me. I ex-

tended a personal invitation to Evelyn Galatis, (the original Album Chair) to be part of this Editorial Board but she

declined. The Editorial Board has already begun its work and has identified a Graphic Designer and Printing Com-

pany to advise us.

The Parish owes a debt of gratitude to Evelyn Galatis and the Album Committee for their dedication and

hard work, and for accumulating the information, interviewing people and coordinating ministry events in the Cen-

tennial Year. They were all very valuable in bringing the album to this stage. Their contributions to this effort were

substantial. We thank them all very much.

In the end, the Dormition Centennial Album will tell a beautiful story of our Parish 100 year history and

honor those who have contributed to our spiritual life and inspire those that will lead our Christian faith into the

future.

Ενημέρωση Λευκώματος 100ετηρίδος Αγαπητοί Ενορίτες και Φίλοι της Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου,

Είμαι στην ευχάριστη θέση να σας ανακοινώσω ότι το Αναμνηστικό Λεύκωμα της

Εκατονταετηρίδος της Κοιμήσεως θα εκδοθεί και θα είναι διαθέσιμο το αργότερο την

Κυριακή, 1 Απριλίου 2018. Τα άλμπουμ θα πουληθούν προς $50 το καθένα και θα

εκτυπωθούν σε 500 αντίτυπα. Κατά την έκδοση του Λευκώματος θα παρατεθεί Δεξίωση, ώστε να εορτάσουμε

την ολοκλήρωσή του και να αναγνωρίσουμε επίσημα τις προσπάθειες όλων όσων συνέβαλαν σε αυτό το ενοριακό

επίτευγμα-ορόσημο.


Η έκδοση οποιουδήποτε αναμνηστικού Λευκώματος είναι μια μνημειώδης εργασία και η δική μας δεν

αποτελεί εξαίρεση. Προβλήματα και καθυστερήσεις που προκαλούν επιπλοκές συμβαίνουν συχνά. Δυστυχώς,

δημιουργήθηκε ένα σημαντικό έλλειμα, όταν ο π. Κωνσταντίνος και εγώ δεν συμπεριεληφθήκαμε για να

συμμετάσχουμε και να προσθέσουμε τις απόψεις μας κατά τη διάρκεια της συγγραφής του Αλμπουμ. Κατά

συνέπεια, τον περασμένο Ιούνιο, όταν επέμεινα στην αναθεώρηση του προσχεδίου των 395 σελίδων, ο π.

Κωνσταντίνος, αρκετά μέλη του Ενοριακού Συμβουλίου και εγώ καταλήξαμε στο συμπέρασμα ότι το κείμενο

χρειάζεται σημαντικές βελτιώσεις και ότι δεν ήταν έτοιμο για εκτύπωση. Ορισμένα από τα προβλήματα ήταν

θέματα σωστής διατάξεως των κειμένων, ελλιπής παρουσίαση γεγονότων, δυσαναλογία χρονολογικών περιόδων

και εξαιρετική ανάγκη βελτίωσης των γραφικών. Σε εκείνο το σημείο, με την έγκριση του π. Κωνσταντίνου,

αποφάσισα να αναλάβω την ευθύνη του Λευκώματος, για να προχωρήσουμε και να το ολοκληρώσουμε με τον

συντομώτερο δυνατόν τρόπο.

Διορίστηκε ένα Συντακτικό Συμβούλιο με έμπειρα μέλη, του οποίου υποχρεωση είναι η έκδοση του

άλμπουμ μέχρι την Κυριακή 1 Απριλίου 2018. Ευρίσκομαι στην ευχάριστη θέση να σας ανακοινώσω ότι ο

Ανάργυρος Σπαράγγης, παλιός ενορίτης, πρώην Μέλος του Ενοριακού Συμβουλίου και Ταμίας, συμφώνησε να

υπηρετήσει ως πρόεδρος του Συντακτικού αυτού Συμβουλίου. Ο Ανάργυρος είναι επικεφαλής μιάς ομάδας με 5

μέλη, τον π. Κωνσταντίνο, τη Δήμητρα Καραβίτη, το Βασίλη Γαλάτη και εμένα. Έκανα προσωπικά πρόσκληση στην

Evelyn Galatis, την πρώην πρόεδρο του άλμπουμ να συμμετέχει και εκείνη, αλλα αρνήθηκε. Το Συμβούλιο έχει ήδη

ξεκινήσει το έργο του και έχει αναθέσει σε γνωστή εταιρία γραφικών και εκτύπωσης να μας κατευθύνει.

Παρά τα διάφορα προβλήματα, η Ενορία χρωστάει ευγνωμοσύνη στην Evelyn Galatis και στην Επιτροπή

του Λεύκώματος των 100 χρόνων για την αφοσίωσή τους και τη σκληρή δουλειά τους. Η συγκέντρωση

φωτογραφικού υλικού και πληροφοριών, οι συνεντεύξεις που πήραν και ο συντονισμός των εκδηλώσεων κατά τον

εορτασμό της 100ετηρίδος υπήρξαν πολύτιμα και έφθασαν το Λεύκωμα στο στάδιο του προσχέδιου. Η συνεισφορά

τους σε αυτή την προσπάθεια ήταν εξαιρετικά σημαντική. Τους ευχαριστούμε ολους και όλες πάρα πολύ.

Εν τέλει, το Λεύκωμα αυτό θα αποτυπώνει μια όμορφη και ζωντανή εικόνα της ιστορίας των 100 χρόνων

της Ενορίας μας, τιμόντας όλους εκείνους που συνέβαλαν στην πνευματική της ζωή και εμπνέοντας όσους θα

οδηγήσουν τη χριστιανική μας πίστη στο μέλλον.

My Dearest parishioners,

In January 2013, I was elected PC President of this Historic Church. It is a great honor, privilege and a great responsibility. I had big shoes to fill. I was fairly new to the community being here since 1995.

In 2013, we were facing a lot of issues. Declining membership, low positive cash flow, low financial re-serves, few students in Greek and Sunday school, old and deteriorating facilities, low office efficiency and commu-nication with the parishioners. Our Church was in need for better maintenance and cleanliness, and many parish-ioners were uncertain about our church’s future.

The PC made the following decisions to:

Try to cultivate a better spiritual environment

Serve the community better

Establish a Strategic planning ministry to better plan for the future and implement its recommendations

Try to negotiate and sign a new parking lot lease with improved terms for the long term church financial stabil-ity.

Invest in building stronger youth programs

Create more events to generate financial support and further develop the existing ones

Invest in office software and hardware and to better serve the parishioners

Take care of the old buildings internally and externally

Celebrate the 100the Anniversary of our church with many events during 2016

Develop the 100 Anniversary Album while generating revenue

Establish a Centennial Weekend Committee to celebrate the 100the Anniversary of our Church.

The actions:

In 2013, with Father Kontantino’s leadership and great support by the entire community we brought to our beloved church the Axion Estin Icon. The icon was introduced with a great reception to the community.

A Strategic Planning Ministry was established to create a five year plan for our church. The Ministry made ten major recommendations which the PC started implementing.

A RED team was established. They hired an engineer who performed a needs assessment.

A Special General Assembly approved the hiring of an engineer to further develop a three stage plan to im-prove and develop our church and the facilities

We started investing heavily in the development of Greek school by hiring very good teachers and keeping the school fee low

Capital investments were made to replace the old equipment

We created opportunities for our youth for spiritual and personal development

Our Bakaliaro Dinner and Gyro Day were created and we participated in the Art-beats festival to generate more revenues

We revived the New Year Celebration.

A Tribute to Oresti Demetriadis took place which generated $20k for the Greek school and the youth pro-grams. The Dormition Family Table was establish to serve the needy.

Major efforts were undertaken to improve our festival.


What we have accomplished: Greek school enrollment is improving every year and this year we have 27 students. The Dormition Table has been very successful and serves 60-70 individuals twice a month. The Sunday school enrolment has improved this year. The church’s roof was replaced. A walk-in freezer, a walk-in refrigerator and a heat compressor were installed. Many other equipment have

been purchased. Every year we financially support all children to visit the St. Methodios Center and retreat. This year we sent 9

students to the camp. Our church never looked cleaner. Our festival is improving every year for many reasons. The revenue has increased every year for the last ten years but the increase has been dramatic in the last five years. The festival revenue, expenses and profits fol-low for the last seven years. 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 Income 82,574 92,481 110,642 112,917 127,609 42,402 186,899 Expenses 41,977 42,135 52,800 59,463 54,100 64,770 70,860 Profit 40,597 50,346 57,842 53,454 73,509 77,632 116,039 We have increased the Festival Revenue by $94K since 2012 and the profits by $66K. Both are new amaz-ing records for our small size church. All Events generated 89k revenue in 2011 and 45K net profits. In 2017, until September revenue was 227k and 140k profits. Again a great improvement. Over all church’s Financials are healthier. Our Cash Position was $362K in 2012 but they were $604,000 in October 31, 2017. A net increase of $242,000. Our Cash Position was $270,000 reserves in 2012 and it is $360,000 in October 31, 2017. A net increase of $90k

Consolidated Financials for 2016 was $62,000 positive. Consolidated Financials for 2017 up to Oct 31, is $78,000 The 2018 Budget has anticipated Consolidated Financials $73,900. They have been improved drastically and they are stable. In comparison 2012 had a $24,000 net consolidated financials. In addition to this we had made $101,000 capital investments in 2016 and an additional $140,000 for 2017. A total of $240,000 in just 2 years. Furthermore we are spending 20K for Greek school annually on top of the fees collected, and another $4-5,000 to send our kinds to St. Methodios Camp.

The 100th Anniversary Ministry has done a great job and generated over $84k from sponsorships in the Album and other events. Evelyn has submitted a draft of the album which is at the editing process. Evelyn has been invited to participate but she has declined. A graphics designer and an editor have been hired to work with the editorial team. We are expecting the album to be release no later than April 1, 2018. The Centennial Weekend Ministry has done an amazing job and generated over $104 from the Weekend Celebra-tion Activities. These proceeds will be used to create the first Endowment Fund for our church. These results have been a total team effort. All the ministries and their members are working very hard. Every ministry and everyone has contributed to this turn around. Every one’s participation is very important. It is amazing what we can accomplish when we work together. I am very grateful to all of you. We need to continue working together to secure the future of our church. We have plans to renovate and improve our buildings and Church. I would like to thank Protopresbyter Father Konstantinos Manetas for his vision, leadership and hard work and all the ministries and every one of their members. I would like to express my sincerest gratitude and appreciation to every single member of the PC who have entrusted me with this leadership position and I thank them all from the bottom of my heart for their hard work, dedication and commitment. I would like to welcome Bill Bozaglu and Guy Bressette to the PC. Thank you all for your dedication, support and love.

Τον Ιανουάριο του 2013, εξελέγη πρόεδρος του Ενοριακού Συμβουλίου αυτής της ιστορικής εκκλησίας. Είναι μια μεγάλη τιμή, προνόμιο και μεγάλη ευθύνη. Είχα μεγάλα παπούτσια να γεμίσω. Ήμουν σχετικά νέος στην κοινότητα, από το 1995.

Το 2013 αντιμετωπίζαμε πολλά θέματα.

Μείωση του αριθμού Ενοριτών.

Χαμηλή θετική ταμειακή ροή.

Χαμηλά οικονομικά αποθεματικά.

Λίγοι μαθητές στο Eλληνικό και Καθηγητικό σχολείο.

Παλαιά και επιδεινούμενα κτήρια και Εκκλησία.

Η Εκκλησία μας είχε ανάγκη για καλύτερη συντήρηση και καθαριότητα.

Πολλοί ενορίτες ήταν αβέβαιοι για το μέλλον της εκκλησίας μας.

Το Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο έλαβε τις ακόλουθες αποφάσεις για να:

Προσπαθήσει να καλλιεργήσει ένα καλύτερο πνευματικό περιβάλλον.

Υπηρετήση καλύτερα την κοινότητα.

Δημιουργήση μία Διακονία Στρατηγικού Σχεδιασμού για να σχεδιάσει καλύτερο προγραμματισμό για το μέλλον και να εφαρμόσει τις προτάσεις του.

Προσπαθήσει να διαπραγματευτεί και να υπογράψει μια νέα μίσθωση χώρου στάθμευσης αυτοκινήτων με βελτιωμένους όρους για τη μακροπρόθεσμη οικονομική σταθερότητα της εκκλησίας.

Επενδύση στη δημιουργία ισχυρότερων προγραμμάτων για τη νεολαία.

Δημιουργήσει περισσότερες εκδηλώσεις για μεγαλύτερη οικονομική υποστήριξη και να αναπτύξει περαιτέρω τις υπάρχοντα.

Επενδύση σε λογισμικό γραφείου και εξοπλισμό για να εξυπηρετήσει καλύτερα τους ενορίτες.

Φροντίση τα παλιά κτίρια εσωτερικά και εξωτερικά.

Γιορτάση την 100η επέτειο της εκκλησίας μας με πολλές εκδηλώσεις το 2016.

Αναπτύξη το άλμπουμ των 100 ετών και την δημιουργία εσόδων.

Δημιουργήση μια Επιτροπή Σαββατοκύριακου για να γιορτάσουμε την 100η επέτειο της Εκκλησίας μας.

Οι Ενέργειες:

Το 2013, με την ηγεσία του πατέρα Κωνταντίνου και με μεγάλη υποστήριξη από ολόκληρη την κοινότητα, φέραμε στην αγαπημένη μας εκκλησία την εικόνα του Axion Estin. Η εικόνα εισήχθη με μεγάλη υποδοχή στην κοινότητα.

Δημιουργήθηκε μία Διακονια Στρατηγικού Σχεδιασμού για να δημιουργήσει ένα πενταετές πρόγραμμα για την εκκλησία μας. Η Διακονια προέβη σε δέκα σημαντικές συστάσεις τις οποίες το Ενοριακo Συμβουλίο άρχισε να εφαρμόζει.

Δημιουργήθηκε μια Διακονία Αναπτυξης Κτηρίων. Προσλάβαμε έναν μηχανικό ο οποίος πραγματοποίησε μια αξιολόγηση αναγκών.

Μια Ειδική Γενική Συνέλευση ενέκρινε την πρόσληψη μηχανικού για την περαιτέρω ανάπτυξη ενός σχεδίου τριών σταδίων για τη βελτίωση και την ανάπτυξη της εκκλησίας μας και των εγκαταστάσεων.

Ξεκινήσαμε να επενδύουμε σε μεγάλο βαθμό στην ανάπτυξη του ελληνικού σχολείου, προσλαμβάνοντας πολύ καλούς δασκάλους και διατηρώντας τa σχολικά δίδακτρα χαμηλά.

Πραγματοποιήθηκαν επενδύσεις κεφαλαίου για την αντικατάσταση του παλαιού εξοπλισμού.

Δημιουργήθηκαν ευκαιρίες για τη νεολαία μας για πνευματική και προσωπική ανάπτυξη.

Διοργανώσαμε το δείπνο του Μπακαλιάρου, την ημέρα του Γύρου και συμμετείχαμε στο φεστιβάλ Art-beats για να δημιουργήσουμε περισσότερα έσοδα.

Αναβιώσαμε τον εορτασμό του Νέου Έτους.

Παραχωρήθηκε αφιέρωμα στον Ορέστη Δημητριάδη, που έφερε $ 20 χιλ. για το Eλληνικό σχολείο και τα προγράμματα για τη νεολαία.


Το Τραπέζι της Κοίμησης δημιoυργήθηκε για να εξυπηρετήσει τους άπορους.

Καταβλήθηκαν σημαντικές προσπάθειες για τη βελτίωση του φεστιβάλ μας.

Αγοράσαμε λογιστικά προγραμματα για Εκκλησίες για τη βελτίωση της αποτελεσματικότητας του γραφείου.

Ξεκινήσαμε τη χρήση του listserve για να επικοινωνήσουμε καλύτερα με τους ενορίτες μέσω μηνυμάτων ηλεκτρονικού ταχυδρομείου.

Οι ώρες γραφείου διευρύνθηκαν για να εξυπηρετήσουμε καλύτερα τους ενορίτες μας.

Μια νέα ομάδα καθαρισμού έχει προσληφθεί.

Τι έχουμε καταφέρει;

Ο αριθμός ενοριτών μειώθηκε το 2013, αλλά άρχισε να βελτιώνεται από τότε. Φέτος, μέχρι στιγμής έχουμε 23 νέα μέλη. Τα έσοδα εκ των μελών αυξάνονται και φέτος θα φτάσουν τα $ 55,000.

Μια επιτροπή χώρου στάθμευσης αυτοκινήτων ιδρύθηκε, η οποία βρίσκεται σε διαπραγματεύσεις με το CHA για να ανανεώσει της μίσθωσης. Η μίσθωση τελειώνει τον Δεκέμβριο του 2017. Ελπίζουμε σύντομα για μια νέα συμφωνία. Οι όροι θα ειναι καλύτεροι από τους υπάρχοντες.

Ο αριθμός μαθητών του ελληνικού σχολείου βελτιώνεται κάθε χρόνο και φέτος έχουμε 27 μαθητές.

Το Τραπέζι της Κοίμησης ήταν πολύ επιτυχημένο και εξυπηρετεί 60-70 άτομα δύο φορές το μήνα.

Η εγγραφή στο σχολείο της Κυριακής βελτιώθηκε φέτος επίσης.

Η οροφή της εκκλησίας αντικαταστάθηκε.

Έχουν εγκατασταθεί ένας καταψύκτης, ένα ψυγείο και ένας συμπιεστής θερμότητας. Πολλοί άλλοι εξοπλισμοί έχουν αγοραστεί.

Κάθε χρόνο χρηματοδοτούμε μερικώς όλα τα παιδιά για να επισκεφθούν το Κέντρο του Αγίου Μεθοδίου το καλοκαίρι. Φέτος στείλαμε 9 μαθητές στην κατασκήνωση.

Η εκκλησία μας δεν φαινόταν ποτέ καθαρότερη,

Το φεστιβάλ μας βελτιώνεται κάθε χρόνο για πολλούς λόγους. Τα έσοδα αυξάνονται κάθε χρόνο για τα τελευταία δέκα χρόνια, αλλά η αύξηση ήταν δραματική τα τελευταία πέντε χρόνια. Τα έσοδα, τα έξοδα και τα κέρδη του φεστιβάλ ακολουθούν για τα τελευταία επτά χρόνια.

Έχουμε αυξήσει τα έσοδα από το Φεστιβάλ κατά $ 94K από το 2012 και τα κέρδη κατά $ 66K. Και τα δύο είναι νέα καταπληκτικά ρεκόρ για κια εκκλησία μικρού μεγέθους όπως η Κοίμηση. Όλες οι εκδηλώσεις παρήγαγαν έσοδα 89k το 2011 και καθαρά κέρδη 45Κ. Το 2017, μέχρι το Σεπτέμβριο τα έσοδα ήταν 227k και 140k κέρδη. Μια πολύ μεγάλη βελτίωση σε λίγα χρόνια.

Πάνω από όλα, τα οικονομικά της εκκλησίας είναι πιο υγιεινά. Η θέση μας σε συνολικά μετρητά ήταν $ 362K το 2012, αλλά ήταν $ 604.000 στις 31 Οκτωβρίου 2017. Μία καθαρή αύξηση $ 242.000.

Η θέση μας σε μετρητά προς χρήσιν ανήλθε σε $ 270.000 το 2012 και είναι $ 360.000 στις 31 Οκτωβρίου 2017. Μία καθαρή αύξηση $ 90.000

Οι ενοποιημένες οικονομικές καταστάσεις για το έτος 2016 ήταν $ 62.000 θετικές. Τα ενοποιημένα οικονομικά μεγέθη για το έτος 2017 μέχρι τις 31 Οκτωβρίου είναι 78.000 δολάρια

Ο προϋπολογισμός του 2018 προβλέπει ενοποιημένα οικονομικά αποτελέσματα ύψους $ 73.900. Έχουν βελτιωθεί δραστικά και είναι σταθερά κάθε χρόνο.

Σε σύγκριση το 2012 είχαμε καθαρή ενοποιημένη χρηματοοικονομική κατάσταση ύψους 24.000 δολαρίων.

Εκτός από αυτό, πραγματοποιήσαμε επενδύσεις ύψους 101.000 δολαρίων το 2016 και επιπλέον 140.000 δολάρια για το 2017. Συνολικά 240.000 δολάρια σε μόλις 2 χρόνια. Επιπλέον, ξοδεύουμε 20Κ για το ελληνικό σχολείο ετησίως, επιπλέον των διδάκρων που εισπράτονται, και άλλα $ 4-5.000 για να στείλουμε τα παιδιά μας στην κατασκήνωση του Αγίου Μεθοδίου.

Η Διακονία Εορτασμού 100 χρόνων έχει κάνει σπουδαία δουλειά και έχει δημιουργήσει πάνω από $ 84.000 από χορηγίες στο Άλμπουμ. Η Evelyn υπέβαλε ένα προσχέδιο του άλμπουμ που βρίσκεται στo στάδιο επεξεργασίας. Η Evelyn έχει προσκληθεί να συμμετάσχει, αλλά έχει αρνηθεί. Ενας σχεδιαστής γραφικών και ενας συντάκτης έχουν προσληφθεί για να συνεργαστούν με τη συντακτική ομάδα. Περιμένουμε ότι το άλμπουμ θα κυκλοφορήσει οχι

Η ΝΗΣΤΕΙΑ ΤΩΝ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΥΓΕΝΝΩΝ

Αρχισε από τη 15η του μηνός Νοεμβρίου η πνευματική μας προετοιμασία γιά

τον εορτασμό του ερχομού στη γη του Κυρίου ημών Ιησού Χριστού. Η μελέτη του

νόμου του Κυρίου μέσα από την Αγία Γραφή, η έμπρακτη απόδειξη της υπακοής μας

στα διδάγματά του με την ελεημοσύνη, την προσευχή και την νηστεία, πρέπει να μας

συνοδεύσουν τις επόμενες σαράντα μέρες και να μας βοηθήσουν να Τον υποδεχθούμε

νοερά “εν πνεύματι και αληθεία”. Η νηστεία δεν είναι απλά η βίωση μιάς καλής

παραδόσεως, ούτε η δουλεία σε νόμο που επιβάλλεται από την εκκλησία. Δεν είναι

ακόμη μια γυμναστική της θελήσεως μας, αλλά η προσπάθεια μας να απαλλαγούμε

από την τυρρανία των παθών της γαστριμαργίας και της λαιμαργίας. Είναι ο αγώνας

μας να ελευθερωθούμε από την τυρρανία που θέλουν να επιβάλλουν πάνω μας τα κτίσματα. Η προσπάθεια μας

να φανερώσουμε ότι είμαστε πλασμένοι κατ’ εικόνα του Θεού και ότι αγωνιζόμαστε να φθάσουμε στο καθ’

ομοίωση.

Κατά την περίοδο της νηστείας των Χριστουγέννων νηστεύουμε το κρέας, το κοτόπουλο και τα γαλακτερά,

γιαούρτια, κρέμες, τυριά. Επιτρέπεται όμως το ψάρι, εκτός από τις Τετάρτες και τις Παρασκευές όπου ισχύει ο

κανόνας της αυστηρής νηστείας. Η ψαροφαγία αυτής της περιόδου λήγει με την εορτή του Αγίου Σπυρίδωνος,

οπότε ακολουθούν δύο εβδομάδες με αυστηρή νηστεία μέχρι τα Χριστούγεννα.

Για μας τους ορθοδόξους αυτή η περίοδος είναι ευκαιρία γιά πνευματική περισυλλογή, σε αντίθεση με την

πλειονότητα της κοινωνίας που προετοιμάζεται με χορούς και πανηγύρια για την έλευση του Σωτήρα. Εμείς

εορτάζουμε τρώγοντας και πίνοντας στο λεγόμενο Δωδεκαήμερο, δηλαδή από την ημέρα των Χριστουγέννων

μέχρι την παραμονή των Θεοφανείων.

Ετσι δίνουμε και το θεάρεστο παράδειγμα της Ορθόδοξης πίστεως και Παραδόσεως στα παιδιά μας και τα εγγόνια μας, τα οποία είναι χαμένα μέσα στο πέλαγος των αθέων και των αδιάφορων, μεγαλώνοντας σε μιά κοινωνία που με τα έργα και τα λόγια της αρνείται συνεχώς το Χριστό. π. κμ


αργότερα απο την 1η Απριλίου 2018.

H Διακονία Σαββατοκύριακου 100 ετών έχει κάνει μια εκπληκτική δουλειά και έχει δημιουργήσει πάνω από $ 104,000 από τις Δραστηριότητες του Σαββατοκύριακου Εορτασμού. Αυτά τα έσοδα θα χρησιμοποιηθούν για τη δημιουργία του πρώτου Ταμείου Χρηματοδότησης για την εκκλησία μας.

Αυτά τα αποτελέσματα ήταν μια συνολική προσπάθεια ομάδας. Όλες οι Διακονίες και ολα τα μέλη τους εργάζονται πολύ σκληρά. Κάθε Διακονία και όλοι έχουν συμβάλει σε αυτή την βελτίωση. Η συμμετοχή όλων είναι πολύ σημαντική. Είναι εκπληκτικό αυτό που μπορούμε να επιτύχουμε όταν συνεργαζόμαστε. Είμαι πολύ ευγνώμων σε όλους σας. Πρέπει να συνεχίσουμε να εργαζόμαστε μαζί για να εξασφαλίσουμε το μέλλον της εκκλησίας μας. Έχουμε σχέδια να ανακαινίσουμε και να βελτιώσουμε τα κτίριά μας και την Εκκλησία.

Θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω τον πατέρα Κωνσταντινο Μανέτα για το όραμά του, την ηγεσία και τη σκληρή δουλειά του, καθώς και όλες τις διακονιες και όλα τα μέλη τους.

Θα ήθελα να εκφράσω την ειλικρινή ευγνωμοσύνη και την εκτίμησή μου σε κάθε μέλος του Ενοριακού Συμβουλίου που μου έχει εμπιστευτεί αυτή την ηγετική θέση και τους ευχαριστώ όλους από το βάθος της καρδιάς μου για τη σκληρή δουλειά, την αφοσίωση και τη δέσμευσή τους.

CHOIR NOTES ....


To my dear Dormition family:

According to a book that was given to me recently, “The Story of Our Choir:

1934-1977,” we first organized a parish choir at Dormition in 1934. Over the last

eighty-three years, our choir and choir directors have left a tremendous legacy. A number of wonderful musical

servants have spent time in front of our organ and our choir; Presvytera Anna Gallos, Presvytera Jeannie Constan-

tinou, Constantine Limberakis, Stella Pathiakis, Evelyn Sophia Czaja, and two who are still with us, Carol Salvo and

Angie Drugas Good. That is only counting choir directors and organists; tremendous musical service has also

graced Dormition with our cantors, including Grammenos Karanos, Vasilis Meimaris, Constantinos Magimbi, and

Grigorios Evangelis. Countless numbers of dedicated choir members have sung in our church, sacrificing hours

upon hours to learn the hymns of the richest musical heritage in the Christian world, and to sing them in church to

lead us all in the worship of the One God in Three Persons.

In September, Fr. Konstantinos asked me to take on the role of choir director in addition to my position as

your cantor. It is an extraordinary blessing to be thought even a fraction as worthy as any of those who had come

before me, and I am grateful to Fr. Konstantinos and our parish council for their trust and support. Dormition has

been nothing short of a godsend to me, Megan, Theodore, and Katherine over the last three years, and I am hum-

bled by the opportunity to give back to the community that has given us so much.

For some of you who may not yet know me as well as I hope you will -- a great deal of my adult life has

been spent seeking to serve the Greek Orthodox Church through the music. I studied music and singing at West-

ern Washington University and Indiana University, subsequently embarking on a course of graduate study that in-

cluded Ancient Greek, Modern Greek, Byzantine music, Byzantine history, and Arabic. I was the cantor and choir

director at All Saints Antiochian Orthodox Church in Bloomington, Indiana from 2005-12, and then the cantor at

Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church in Indianapolis from 2013-14. In 2014 we relocated to Boston, and I was

Scholar in Residence at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology for that academic year, and continued my

study of Byzantine music, acquiring the School’s Certificate. During that time, we fell in love with Boston, including

Dormition, and decided to stay.

Today, I work for a non-profit, AGES Initiatives, that serves the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese by producing

service texts and music to congregations, clergy, and singers; I am also the Artistic Director of The Saint John of

Damascus Society, a nonprofit that specializes in outreach to the general public through Orthodox music and edu-

cation. I teach chant for the Archdiocesan School of Byzantine Music, and I’ve served on the Executive Board as

the Chant Liaison to the Metropolis of Boston Choir Federation since 2015. I’m also privileged to be invited to sing

occasionally with wonderful choirs like the Archdiocesan Byzantine Choir, Psaltikon, and Cappella Romana.

During my family’s time here, I have heard much about the history of our parish’s worship through music,

and I am struck by how much our choir directors and members have done that has been motivated by a sense of

pride in their service, and dedication to their community. The choir has raised its own money for years, paying for

the robes and even paying for the renovations of the attic into the choir loft. It has been a family affair, with

brothers and sisters and parents all singing together. This sense of community pride is something I hope to help

cultivate and grow in today’s choir members as well as tomorrow’s.

My friends and family, I invite all of you, as well as your children, to consider joining the choir and singing

with us, and to consider learning to chant. If you don’t know how, I will be more than happy to help in whatever

way I can. In the coming years, as the number of voices singing grows in size and beauty, truly we will reflect the

words of our Father in Christ St. Ignatius of Antioch:

Dear Parishioners,

On behalf of the president and the members of our Philoptochos Board, I would like to thank you all for your constant support to our efforts to help our needy fellow citizens in any possible way. Under the spiritual guidance of our most esteemed Fr. Konstantinos, and our sister Presvytera Anna, we continue our mission in a very effective and successful way. The Dormition Family Table, continues to offer hot meals to every citizen, in Somerville,

every first & third Wednesday of each month at the lower hall of our church. Please come and join us to help peo-ple, and share with us the joy of giving. The board members and our ladies cook, serve, and clean after, with the professional contribution of our cooks, Mr. Dionysios Kourafalos, Stelios Sfikas, and the help of so many kind vol-unteers.

Last May, we started the preparations for the Annual Greek Food and Dance Festival which took place in Sep-tember. All the Philoptochos members worked very hard to make the delicious foods and pastries that contributed to another record breaking event. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your help and constant support. Details on our profits from the pies, patries, yogurt, and soup are available upon request.

We also worked hard towards the preparation of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary celebrations on August 14 and 15. A lot of faithful parishioners and non parishioners participated in the festivities, and enjoyed delicious food and pastries prepared by our Philoptochos members.

On November 18, we visited the Holy Monastery of Agia Irini Chrysovalantou, in Astoria, New York. In addi-tion, we are inviting all of you to a Pot Luck luncheon on December 9, from 12-5 pm, in the upper hall of our church. Tickets are sold on that day for $10.00 and raffle tickets will be sold also. All proceeds will be used to sup-port our needs.

Please consider joining our Philoptochos Association, and continue to offer us your love and support. You are mostly appreciated by all of us, and especially by the numerous unknown people who need you to make this world a better place for them.

Αγαπητοί μας ενορίτες,

Εκ μέρους της προέδρου και των μελών του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου της Φιλόπτωχου μας

θα ήθελα να σας ευχαριστήσω όλους σας για την αμέριστη συμβολή σας στο έργο μας να

συμπαραστεκόμαστε στους αναξιοπαθούντες συμπολίτες μας, με οποιοδήποτε τρόπο. Κάτω

από την πνευματική καθοδήγηση του σεβάσμιου πατέρα Κωνσταντίνου, και της αδελφής μας

πρεσβυτέρας Αννας, συνεχίζουμε την αποστολή μας με αποτελεσματικότητα, και

αναγνωρισμένη επιτυχία. Το τραπέζι της αγάπης συνεχίζει να προσφέρει, καθε πρώτη & τρίτη Τετάρτη τού μήνα,

μαγειρευμένα φαγητά, παρασκευασμένα από τα χέρια των κυριών του συλλόγου μας, με την φροντίδα, και την

Έπι τη ευκαιρία της γιορτής της κοιμησεως της Υπεραγιας Θεοτόκου μας στις 14 αλλά και στις 15 Αυγούστου, η

ενορία μας προσέφερε γλυκά και εδέσματα στους πιστούς τόσο κατά την διάρκεια της παραμονής, όσο και ανήμερα

του εορτασμού. Οι κύριες της Φιλόπτωχου μας εργάστηκαν σκληρά για την προετοιμασία των δυο ημερών.

Ειρήνης Χρυσοβαλάντου στην Αστοριας της Νέας Υόρκης.

Τέλος σας καλούμε όλους να συμμετέχετε στο ποτ λακ λαντσεον που θα πραγματοποιηθεί στην ενορία μας

στις 9 Δεκεμβρίου, από τις 12:00 μέχρι τις 5:00 μμ. Το εισιτήριο κοστίζει 10 δολάρια, και θα πωλούνται λαχεία με

δώρα που θα κληρωθούν αμέσως μετά. Σας παρακαλούμε θερμά να στηρίξετε την εκδήλωση μας, διότι τα έσοδα

θα διατετηθουν για τους σκοπούς της Φιλόπτωχου μας. Παρακαλούμε θερμά να ενωθείτε μαζί μας, για να

μοιραστούμε μαζί την χαρά του να δίνεις στους συνανθρώπους μας οταν χρειάζονται βοήθειa. Επιπρόσθετα, θα

θέλαμε να ευχαριστήσουμε όλους και όλες εσάς από καρδιάς που με την συμπαράσταση, και την ευγενική σας

βοήθεια, συμβάλετε στην πραγματοποίηση των στόχων της Φιλόπτωχου μας. Ελάτε να

γίνετε μέλη του συλλόγου μας και παρακαλούμε να συνεχίσετε να είστε κοντά μας, ώστε

μαζί να κάνουμε τον κόσμο καλύτερο για κάποιους ανθρώπους που ελπίζουν σε όλους

μας.

Κλείνοντας θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω από καρδιάς όλους και όλες εσάς που

βοήθησατε να γίνει και αυτό το χρόνο με επιτυχία το ετήσιο φεστιβάλ φαγητών και

χορού που έσπασε ρεκόρ πωλήσεων τον περασμένο Σεπτεμβριο. Λεπτομέρειες σχετικά

με τα έσοδα από τα τρόφιμα και τα γλυκά είναι διαθέσιμες για οποίους επιθυμούν να

μάθουν περισσότερες πληροφορίες.

Greetings from the PTO Committee. Recently, with Father’s approval, the PTO pur-

chased and donated informative and age appropriate children’s liturgy books which were

placed in every pew of the Church. The children who attend Sunday school and visit the

Church will be able to worship and follow along during the entire Divine Liturgy.

On October 29, 2017, the Greek School children and the entire parish celebrated

OXI Day in the upper hall. The PTO Committee fundraiser was a success thanks to many of

the parents who donated their time, talent and treasure towards this event. We also thank

the parishioners who attended and supported this event as well.

On November 5, 2017, the PTO held its’ annual welcome back pizza party for the Greek and Sunday

Schools. After the party the children enjoyed a petting zoo and pony rides on Church grounds. This



complimentary event by the PTO was open for the enjoyment of all children and their families.

On November 5, 2017, the PTO Nominations and Elections were held in the Father Chronis Library. Only

4 families appeared to join the PTO Committee. As a result, your 2017-2018 committee co-chairpersons are Mi-

chael Ververis, Kate Makrigianni and our treasurer is John Stefanou. We look forward to serve the youth of the

community with vigor and zeal with your continued support and assistance.

On December 17, 2017, the Greek School will hold its’ annual Christmas Program in the upper hall. Be

certain to bring your children and/or grandchildren for a special visitor from the North Pole. The PTO Committee

will also be hosting a LENTEN Breakfast for the community to enjoy.

On December 24, 2017, the Sunday school children with the assistance of the Sunday School Director

Eleni Raschi and the PTO will hold its annual Christmas Pageant after the Church service. We wish to thank Ms.

Evelyne Czaja, the former choir director, who is no longer with the Church for her years of support with the Christ-

mas Pageant. We also encourage the same support from the new Choir Director Richard Barrett, the Choir and

the parishioners as we will celebrate the upcoming holidays. We hope that you all will participate and sing in the

annual holiday sing along.

As always the PTO Committee seeks new volunteers to execute and assist with our events for our chil-

Χαιρετισμούς από την επιτροπή του ΠTO. Πρόσφατα, με την έγκριση του

Πατέρα Κ., το ΠΤΟ αγόρασε και δώρισε ενημερωτικά και ηλικιακά κατάλληλα,

εκκλησιαστικά παιδικά βιβλία, τα οποία τοποθετήθηκαν σε κάθε στασίδι της

Εκκλησίας. Τα παιδιά που παρακολουθούν το σχολείο της Κυριακής και επισκέπτονται

την Εκκλησία θα μπορούν να προσκυνούν και να ακολουθούν κατά τη διάρκεια

ολόκληρης της Θείας Λειτουργίας.

Στις 29 Οκτωβρίου 2017, τα παιδιά του Ελληνικού Σχολείου και ολόκληρη η

ενορία γιόρτασαν την Ημέρα του ΟΧΙ στην άνω αίθουσα. Ο έρανος της επιτροπής

ΠTO ήταν επιτυχής, χάρη σε πολλούς από τους γονείς που δώρισαν το χρόνο και το ταλέντο προς αυτή την

εκδήλωση. Ευχαριστούμε επίσης τους ενορίτες που παρακολούθησαν και υποστήριξαν αυτή την γιορτή.

Στις 5 Νοεμβρίου 2017, το ΠTO πραγματοποίησε το ετήσιο παρτυ του για το Ελληνικό και Κυριακάτικο

σχολείο. Μετά το πάρτι, τα παιδιά απόλαυσαν την ιππασία με πόνυ στο προαύλιο τη εκκλησίας. Αυτή η δωρεάν

εκδήλωση του ΠTO ήταν ανοιχτή για την απόλαυση όλων των παιδιών και των οικογενειών τους.

Στις 5 Νοεμβρίου 2017 πραγματοποιήθηκαν οι υποψηφιότητες και οι εκλογές του ΠTO στη βιβλιοθήκη Fa-

ther Chronis. Μόνο 4 οικογένειες εντάχθηκαν στην επιτροπή του ΠTO. Ως αποτέλεσμα, οι συμπρόεδροι της

επιτροπής σας 2017-2018 είναι ο Michael Ververis, η Kate Makrigianni και ο ταμίας μας ο Γιάννης Στεφάνου.

Ανυπομονούμε να υπηρετήσουμε τη νεολαία της κοινότητας με σθένος και ζήλο, με τη συνεχή υποστήριξη και

βοήθειά σας.



Στις 17 Δεκεμβρίου 2017, το Ελληνικό Σχολείο θα πραγματοποιήσει το ετήσιο πρόγραμμα των

Χριστουγέννων στην άνω αίθουσα. Βεβαιωθείτε οτι θα παρευρεθείτε με τα παιδιά σας και / ή τα εγγόνια σας,

καθώς θα είναι εκεί και ο επισκέπτης μας από τον Βόρειο Πόλο. Η επιτροπή ΠTO θα προσφέρει επίσης ένα

νηστίσιμο πρωινό για να απολαύσει η κοινότητα.

Στις 24 Δεκεμβρίου 2017, τα παιδιά του Κατηχητικού, με τη βοήθεια της διευθύντριας του Κυριακάτικου

Σχολείου Ελένης Rachi και του ΠΤΟ., θα πραγματοποιήσουν την ετήσια εκδήλωση για τα Χριστούγεννα μετά την

εκκλησία.

Θέλουμε να ευχαριστήσουμε την κα Evelyn Czaja, πρώην διευθύντρια χορωδίας, η οποία δεν θα είναι πλέον

μαζί μας, μετά από πολλά χρόνια υποστήριξης στις Χριστουγεννιάτικες εκδηλώσεις. Ενθαρρύνουμε επίσης την ίδια

υποστήριξη από τον νέο διευθυντή της χορωδίας Richard Barrett, τα μέλη της Χορωδίας και τους ενορίτες καθώς

θα γιορτάσουμε τις επερχόμενες εορτές. Ελπίζουμε ότι όλοι θα συμμετάσχετε και θα τραγουδήσετε στις ετήσιες

εορταστικές εκδηλώσεις.

Ενθαρρύνουμε όλους τους γονείς και ενορίτες να είναι μαζί μας σε αυτά τα γεγονότα. Επικοινωνήστε με τον

Christmas Lent

Our spiritual preparation for the celebration of Christmas starts on the 15th of November.

The study of the words of our Lord in the Bible and the tangible proof of our obedience to

His teachings by almsgiving, prayer and fasting, should accompany us for the next forty

days and help us welcome Him mentally "in spirit and in truth’’. Fasting is not about ex-

periencing an ancient tradition or obeying a law imposed by the Church. Likewise, it isn’t

a trial of our will, but our sincere effort to get rid of the tyranny of the passion of glut-

tony. It is our struggle to free ourselves from devotion to material wealth and posses-

sions. Our attempt to reveal that we have been created in the image of God and that we

strive to reach Him in likeness.

During Christmas Lent we fast from meat, chicken and dairy products, yogurt, cream, cheese. However, fish is

allowed, except on Wednesdays and Fridays when we follow the rule of strict lent. The fish eating period ends

with the feast of St. Spyridon followed by two weeks of strict lent until Christmas.

For the Orthodox Christians this period is an opportunity for spiritual contemplation, in contrast to the majority of

society which prepares to dance and feast for the coming of the Savior. We celebrate by eating and drinking in the

so-called Twelve Days after Christmas, from Nativity until the day before Epiphany.

In this way, we can model a pious example of Orthodox faith and tradition for our children and grandchildren, who

grow up among atheistic and indifferent people in a society that continuously rejects Christ.

Office. Coffee hours do not have to be only in memory of deceased loved ones. Two

or more families could also join together and sponsor a coffee hour.

You might want to consider hosting a coffee hour in honor of a family member’s birthday,

name day, wedding, anniversary, graduation, promotion, retirement, and beginning of fall, end

of the winter, an early spring…..or “just because!” If you want the Parish

Council to prepare the coffee hour for you, please contact the Church office

for the different rates that are applicable depending upon what food you

would like served.
