We are one Body in this one Lord.

Happy 50th anniversary, Jim and Phyllis!Jim and Phyllis Maxwell met at a dance in 1969 in Rochester, Minn. They were married

on June 12, 1971, at St. Pius X in Rochester. When asked what marital advice they’d give to couples, they replied, “Marriage takes

patience and compromise.”Jim and Phyllis lived in Minnesota, California, and Nebraska, before moving to Derby

in 1988. Jim was Youth Center Director at McConnell AFB, retiring after 30 years in Civil Service to become a realtor. Phyllis was an RN for 42 years, retiring in 2011 from Wesley Hospital after 22 years there.

They are both active Stewards. Jim is a Knight (and former Grand Knight) and usher. Phyllis belongs to Marian Guild of the Altar Society, and both belong to Harvest House.

They have 3 sons, Tim (Monicaa) in Mansfield, Texas; Jeff (Tara) in Derby, and Mark (Pimm) in Denver; and 6 grandchildren.

Happy anniversary, and thank you for your Stewardship, Jim and Phyllis!

Happy 50th anniversary, Fred & Bev! Fred and Bev Debes met June 13, 1970 at a wedding rehearsal. “He proposed to me the following Halloween,” Bev said. “He froze my engagement

ring in an ice cube, then served me ice water.”Fred was in the Air Force, stationed at McConnell Air Force Base, and Bev was in

Nursing School in Great Bend. They were married June 6, 1971 in Hoisington. They have two daughters, Kristi Debes and Kori Armbruster. “They blessed us with four grandsons and four granddaughters, who blessed us with

four great-grandsons and three great-granddaughters,” said Bev.Fred and Bev’s Stewardship has included being greeters, Eucharistic Ministers, Lector,

Usher, RCIA Sponsor, and Knights of Columbus. When asked the secret to a long and happy marriage, Fred said, “God in our life and

a commitment to each other, especially through the ups and downs.”Bev said with a laugh, “Through all of our ups and downs, I always told Fred, ‘God

meant for us to be together – you’re my soulmate.’ He finally caught on!”Happy anniversary, Fred and Bev, and thank you for your Stewardship!

Scholarship awardedJames Ramsey, incoming Grand Knight of

the Derby Knights of Columbus, presented Daniel Kasych with the Milo Grisamore scholarship at graduation on May 27.

The award is presented annually to a graduating St Mary eighth grade student that has excelled in academics and shown character and leadership beyond expectations. The award is given by the Knights in memory of Milo Grisamore, a deceased Knight from our Council.

Daniel, the son of Keith and Cindy Kasych, will go to Kapaun Mt Carmel Catholic High School in the Fall. Congratulations, Daniel!

As was announced this past weekend, Father Michael has been named the pastor of St. Paul in Lyons, and Holy Name of Jesus in Bushton, effective July 1.

“I feel very blessed and am extremely grateful to have been able to spend this past year at St. Mary,” said Father Michael. “And I will miss this place, all of you, very much. Please pray for me during this time of transition."

Although we are sad to see him leave, we are also grateful for the time he was with us!

These times of transition are difficult for parishes and priests alike—and not easy decisions for the Bishop to make—so let us keep each other in prayer and support one another.

Father Michael’s last full weekend with us will be June 19-20. We will have a reception (more details next weekend) in the Commons after 9 am and 11 am Mass June 20 for all that wish to stop by and visit with him. His last Mass will be the 8 am Mass on June 30.

Best wishes, Fr Mike!

James and Daniel

Go make disciples of all nations. Love one another.

Family MattersTogether we mark the milestones of our lives, celebrate the

joys, and share the sorrows.

CongratulationsCongratulations to all the recent graduates, including our St.

Mary Parish Catholic School eighth grade class of 2021!In addition to diplomas, 8th grade awards presented included:Charli Drum and Noa Santos received The Heart of Christ

Award, recognizing their tremendous, unselfish stewardship through all their years at St. Mary. This award goes to a student who stands out each semester, year after year – always eager to help, never expecting anything in return, and putting others first. It is recognitionof character and willingness to live his or her faith.

Benryan Altman, Kylie Cartwright, and Ben Strunk had a three-way tie for highest GPA. St. Mary School Parent Teacher Organization presents an annual monetary award to the students with the highest grade point average over the past three years.

Benryan also received two other awards:•The Derby Optimist Club Award for best exemplifiying

academics, leadership, and citizenship (what we would call Stewardship, said Principal Montgomery).

• The Cari Brennan Award. Cari, a former St. Mary student and daughter of Ed and Kathy Brennan, was an encouraging, hard-working, positive athlete, and always a team player, putting others before self. The recipient must be someone who participated in sports, and exemplified true Christian Stewardship in representing the school.

Hayden Sattler and Thomas Klosterman received the Mr. Bobcat Award for participating in the most athletic opportunities offered, and Maggie Elliott was named Ms. Bobcat for the same.

“Teachers and staff of St Mary Catholic School, thank you all for all you’ve done for our 8th grade students over the years,” said parent Nikole Drum. “Thank you ALL for your guidance on their journeys!”

Good Steward and St. Joseph awards were given to second through eighth grade students pictured and listed at right in recognition of their outstanding Stewardship.

If you have family news (graduation, retirement, marriage, promotion, engagement, etc) to share, email [email protected]!

PRAYERS

PRAYER REQUESTS

June 6 • THE WORD FOR CHILDRENGospel message: Christ’s body and blood will save us.

Prayer: Help me to be thankful that Jesus gave up his own body and blood to save me from my sins. Amen.

Reading I: Ez 17:22-24 The Lord lifts high the lowly; Reading II: 2 Cor 5:6-10 We walk by faithGospel: Mk 4:26-34 Parables of the kingdom of God

Key Passage: [The kingdom of God] is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants. (Mk 4:31-32)

Reflection: Today’s parable speaks about the seed growing on its own. The planter does not notice the growth beneath the soil and cannot make the seed grow. The parable of the mustard seed speaks about the small beginnings of God’s Kingdom. God’s Kingdom grows from those who heed his words. Most people do not understand about God’s Kingdom. But the Lord keeps taking the disciples aside and explaining to them. Those who are willing to follow the Lord and listen to his teachings will come to understand the truth of the Kingdom.Question for Adults: Which is your favorite image of the kingdom of God? Question for Children: How would you explain heaven to a friend?

FIAT: May it be done to me according to your word.

Stewardship reflectionThe Sacrament of the Altar “In the sacrament of the altar, the Lord meets

us, men and women created in God’s image and likeness, and becomes our companion along the way.”

These words from Pope Benedict XVI should bring consolation to us as missionary disciples. Jesus goes with us—always!

Today, as we honor the Body and Blood of our Lord in the Eucharist, we are reminded that this sacrament must reside at the very center of our lives.

We cannot expect to go about doing the work of Christ if we have not first gone to Him at the altar. The Eucharist calls us into an intimate relationship with the Master, and this friendship should shape and drive our discipleship.
