Trust God…Choose Life

“You shall have no other gods before Me.” Exodus 20:3

On January 22, 1973, death became a god. The United States Supreme Court decision Roe v Wade struck down all abortion laws. In the past 42 years, over 56 million children have died through induced abortion. Add the millions of women and men wounded by abortion decisions, and the tragedy becomes incomprehensible. A spiritual tragedy ensued as well. Death became a god that people – many of whom claim to be Christians – turn to for rescue. Abortion is fundamentally idolatry, trusting in the god of death rather than in the Lord of Life. But real rescue and hope come only from the latter.

As part of the mission of LFL-MI to educate and equip our young people to be Gospel-motivated voices on life issues, we are excited to announce a new format for our ‘Life Essay Contest’. We will be accepting essays as well as artistic projects. We hope that this change will allow students with a wide variety of interests and skills to express their support of life issues in a personal and meaningful way. Please note that the essays and artistic projects will be considered as two different categories and they will be evaluated and prizes will be awarded separately.

All Lutheran congregations/schools are encouraged to participate in this contest by presenting this information and opportunity to their 7th and 8th grade students. Projects should be created under the guidance of the pastor or teacher, and submitted by the deadline of March 15th.

Each congregation/school should judge their own students’ projects first and then submit to the state contest their one winning entry in the artistic category and/or one winning entry in the essay category. On October 24-25, St Matthew Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids hosted 200 Lutherans from across the United States and Canada for the 2014 National Lutherans For Life Conference.

Focusing on the conference theme in his opening worship service sermon, Rev Dr James Lamb, Executive Director of Lutherans For Life said, “If the life issues are merely political issues, then we need not discuss them in church. But if they are matters of the heart that touch people’s souls and put our brothers and sisters in need, and we have what it takes to deal with matters of the heart – the Gospel of Jesus Christ – but close our hearts to doing so, how can God’s love abide in us?” He continued, “The Gospel speaks to our hearts those wonderful words, our ‘warfare is ended’. Through Christ we have peace with God. He loves us and nothing can separate us from that love. We can trust Him and turn to Him, not death, as the solution to our problems.”

The conference in-gathering helped attendees put ‘love into action’ by bringing baby items to assist the outreach ministries of Cradles of Grace (serving single women in unplanned pregnancies) and the Pregnancy Resource Center of Grand Rapids. A special offering was also collected and given to these ministries.

The 2015 Lutherans For Life National Conference is set for October 30-31 at the Creation Museum in Petersburg,

Kentucky. The theme is Created…Redeemed…Called.

Students from Concordia Ann Arbor were among those attending the National LFL Conference in Grand Rapids. From L to R: Grace Gilson, Sarah Hetting, Christian Allen, and Madison Redmer

Former LFL-MI Board members were also in attendance. From R to L: Pastor North Sherrill [Spiritual Counselor], Fred Gallert [Treasurer], Millie Gallert [President], Sandy Schultz [Secretary] and Sharon Sherrill

Owen’s Mission is a national Lutherans For Life project whose goal it is to place a set of Touch of Life fetal models into every Lutheran Elementary and High School in the United States. On January 7th, as part of this project, LFL-MI President, Connie Davis shared the chapel message Created, Redeemed, Called with the students and teachers at St Peter Lutheran School in Macomb. Since St Peter already has a set of fetal models, a packet of ideas was presented to the school on how these babies might be used to teach about the value that God gives to every life. Pictured on the left: St Peter students, grades 1-8, in the Wednesday morning chapel service; on the right, from L to R: St Peter Interim Principal Kathy Krause, Pastor Matt Baye, and Connie Davis.

Statewide Diaper Shower sponsored by Lutherans For Life of Michigan

May 10 through June 21, 2015

Lutherans For Life of Michigan is once again sponsoring a Statewide Diaper Shower. This annual project encourages and supports local pregnancy resource centers throughout our state. All Lutheran congregations in Michigan are encouraged to collect disposable diapers on the Sundays between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

The procedure is very simple…

Encourage the members of your congregation/school [via bulletin, newsletter and oral announcements] to purchase packages of disposable diapers.

Designate an area in your church/school building for the collection of diapers.

Once the diapers are collected, please tally the individual diapers collected and call or email the total to Connie at 586-949-9261 or [email protected]

Deliver the collected diapers to the nearest pregnancy resource center in your area. The centers are always so appreciative of these gifts for mothers and children in need.

We also encourage you to take photographs of your congregation’s/school’s collection area and email them to [email protected] for inclusion in our quarterly Lifelines newsletter...as space permits.

NOTE: For congregations with elementary schools/youth groups…this is a great project to encourage students/teens to actively do something for those in need.

Thank you for caring for ‘the least of these’.

Pregnancy Resource Centers save lives! Is this PRC near you? Read how you and your church can help.

History: Pregnancy Choices had its Grand Opening in January of 2014. Pregnancy Services of East Lansing and Cedar Street Church of Holt formed a partnership in the Fall of 2013 to open a new branch. Pregnancy Services has faithfully served the community since 1978, but saw a greater need in the community. Their vision to “surround the city” was also felt by many in the community, and a satellite office was opened in 2010 on the West side of Lansing. In the Fall of 2013, Pregnancy Services formed a very unique partnership with Cedar Street Church in Holt to open Pregnancy Choices, the South satellite office.

Mission: Pregnancy Services of Greater Lansing is a Christ-centered organization whose purpose is to provide physical, emotional and spiritual support regarding pregnancies; to assist individuals in understanding the benefits of God’s truths regarding sexuality and the sanctity of life; and to encourage sexual abstinence until marriage.

Services Provided: We provide the following free services: Pregnancy tests Ultrasounds Options counseling Parenting programs Some free baby items (As a satellite office, we do not give out large baby items, however, the East Lansing office will take them.)

Volunteer Opportunities: Prayer Monetary donations Volunteers (train to be a Pregnancy Counselor or teach parenting programs) Donate baby items such as diapers, wipes and formula Organize a “Baby Bottle Drive” to collect funds from your church or small group Non-gender specific baby quilts Pregnancy Choices is dedicated to helping women understand that life is precious, not just because of political agendas, but because God has ordained it. Each week women come through our doors searching for answers. Some are searching for a reason not to abort their babies, and some are looking for approval of a bad choice. We give them information and resources to make an informed decision. We show them how they can parent (or choose adoption) in a world that tells them they can’t! There are few things in life more exciting than watching a woman realize that she is already a mother, all she needs to do now is embrace the life that is growing inside of her. Do you love life? Do you love babies? Please join us in supporting these women, helping them to make the right choice for their babies, as God has equipped and enabled you. Please contact Bethany Morris by calling (517)889-5135 or email at [email protected].

Please send funds to: Pregnancy Services, 1045 East Grand River Avenue, East Lansing, MI 48823. (In check notes, please specify to “Pregnancy Choices”)

Legislative Update

Michigan:

In December, House Speaker Jase Bolger refused to take a vote on The Coercive Abortion Bills (S.B. 1156 & 1157) over the final days of the legislative session. While more than 100 bills were addressed during a marathon 20-hour session, the two coercive abortion protection bills were left to die and will have to be reintroduced in the new session starting in January. Bolger is term-limited and will not be returning to the legislature in 2015.

Kudos to Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville and lead bill sponsor, Senator Judy Emmons, who went the extra mile trying to get this legislation through in the waning days of this session. They demonstrated true commitment and leadership to the prolife cause.

It is a disappointing finish to an otherwise historic 4-year legacy of passing prolife legislation under the current House and Senate leadership. Under Speaker Bolger and Majority Leader Randy Richardville, RLM was able to promote more significant prolife legislation than at any other time in our history. Both Bolger and Richardville are term-limited and will not return to the legislature in 2015.

In 2011, after 15 years of effort, a ban on partial birth abortion was finally secured in Michigan law. In 2012, we passed the unprecedented Prolife Omnibus bill, putting four separate bills together into one. In 2013, the House and Senate approved our citizen petition legislation to remove abortion coverage from Obamacare plans and all health insurance in Michigan. Passage of the Coercive Abortion Protection Act would have been a crowning piece to this remarkable run of prolife legislation.

We need to continue to pray for this legislation to be passed this year. Washington, DC:

U.S. House of Representatives to vote January 22 on Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act!

The Republican leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives indicates that it intends to bring a major pro-life bill to the House floor for a vote on Thursday, January 22, 2015…the 42 year anniversary of the infamous Roe v Wade U.S. Supreme Court decision.

The bill is the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 36), which would extend general protection from abortion to unborn children nationwide beginning at 20 weeks fetal age, based on congressional recognition that by this point in development, if not earlier, the unborn child is capable of experiencing pain. H.R. 36, sponsored by Reps. Trent Franks (R-AZ) and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), is based on model legislation developed by National Right to Life that has already been enacted in 10 states.

Note: In the U.S. Senate, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) plans to introduce the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act sometime in the Spring of 2015.

* “Every day in this country confusion and fear lead to nearly 3,000 babies being brutally destroyed through abortion. These are babies created by God, babies for whom Jesus died, and babies God wants to call into an eternal relationship with Him…How can we possibly label these [issues] ‘political’ and withhold the only thing that can speak to such matters of the heart? The Gospel is designed to speak to hearts, your heart, my heart, all hearts. The Gospel calls us to repentance. The Gospel cleanses our hearts and forgives the sins that flow from our hearts.” [Dr James Lamb, LFL Executive

* “In America, we removed the religious moral compass from our children and now we are shocked when some sad soul murders his classmates. Klaus, speaker emeritus on the Lutheran Hour]

* When we sanction death as a solution to life’s problems, then death, not the LORD of Life, becomes our master. [Life Thoughts in the Church Year, LifeDate, Fall

2013, p. 28]

* “A mother’s womb should be the safest place on earth for her unborn child, yet it is often the battleground between life and death. Abortion not only tears a child from her mother’s womb, but tears away at the intimate fabric of the family unit.” [Arina Grossu, Director of the

Center for Human Dignity at Family Research Council, LifeNews.com, 1/9/15]

* “We can’t stop all evil in this fallen world, but we can fight it in our own neck of the woods with love. Love never ends. Love can save lives. Love declares that there is no such thing as an unwanted child.” [Dr Alveda

King, niece of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr]

* “Our culture has bought into the bizarre idea that the best way to eliminate certain illnesses is simply to eliminate people who are ill before they have a chance to be born.” [Gina Dalfonzo, Focus on the Family magazine,

January 2005]
