Dear Parents and Guardians, Welcome to the second month of the New Year. Certainly January proved to be a challenge in terms of weather between bouts of extreme cold, snow and ice. February, the shortest month, brings us one month closer to the promise of spring. This month also kicks off a new semester and new opportunities as well as gives us the occasion to celebrate the contributions of the black community to the American way of life. During this month, we see beginnings and endings all mixed together as the Class of 2015 will register and the Class of 2011 will celebrate their 100 Day Celebration, marking just 100 days until their graduation. February is a month filled with opportunities for enjoying La Salle’s indoor sport events. As of this moment, our teams are all celebrating early success. All our teams are showing their metal and looking forward to spots in post season play. Members of the Junior Class will be invited to turn their attention to the college planning process with special evening programs for their parents on February 8-9, 2011. I always hear wonderful things about how fortunate La Salle is to have such a dedicated and talented College Counseling staff. I invite all parents of juniors to come to one of these evenings to experience the level of professionalism La Salle brings to the college placement process and to learn a few tricks to help you and your son in this process. The month will conclude with the Mother/ Son Communion Brunch, which will take place on Sunday, February 27, 2011 at Williamson’s Catering in Horsham. We expect close to 1,000 mothers and their sons to be present this day. Please take a moment to review the Mothers’ Club portion of this publication for more specifics. It has been some time since I last brought you up to speed on our Capital Campaign, Fulfilling the Promise. We are at the $22, 000,000 level having received almost 750 gifts. With your continued support and prayer, we are confident our goal of $25 million will be reached by June, 2011. I am thankful to many of our alums who are contacting their classmates to seek support and involvement at the class level. During the month of February, a $300 deposit for registration ($50 for roster and $250 deposit) is due for the 2011-2012 academic year. This increase was explained in my tuition announcement. The reason for this policy is to give us a stronger picture of commitment to the upcoming academic year. Please contact our Finance Office if you need an extension or an explanation of how this credit is applied towards next year. When you visit the Main Office, be certain to view some of the trophies that have been won this year as they represent the accomplishments of your sons. The presentation is for parents and adults as Josh will be speaking to the students during the school day. Josh is the host of the television show Jump Shipp, author of "The Teen's Guide to World Domination", named a “CNN Young Person Who Rocks”, and was listed on INC. Magazine's 30 Under 30 List. Josh has established an international reputation as a teen communication expert who can get through to any teen. He's spoken at dozens of colleges and universities and to over 1.5 million teenagers live. He is a recognized teen expert for such media outlets as MTV, CNN, and FOX. Josh offers up a healthy dose of advice that he calls "in your face, but on your side." He counsels teenagers on everything they care about and it’s all done in a youth-friendly, humorous tone that is more of a hilarious survival guide than a preachy sermon. Josh certainly knows a thing or two about survival. Abandoned and abused as a child, he was able to triumph over the tragedy. He attributes his personal growth to the support of a great foster family, dynamic teachers, and enriching school programs that opened his eyes to his true potential. "Josh Shipp has the ability to get through to ANY teen and point them in the right direction. It's an incredible thing to witness." Harvard University

Gibbons ’92 Chief Financial Officer 2011-2012 Tuition Policies La Salle College High School is a private independent Catholic educational institution that emphasizes religious values and academic excellence. We depend on full and timely payment of tuition, rather than Church or government subsidies. La Salle makes every effort to minimize tuition, fees, and tuition increases, while providing the very best quality education consistent with Catholic values. When a student registers at La Salle we hold a place for that student. Furthermore, we commit resources to optimize the educational experience of that student and design staffing, supplies, and programs based on the number of registered students. Each year we forgo potential income by limiting the number of incoming students when we commit a place for your son. Thus, once a semester begins, no tuition will be refunded for that semester for any reason. 1. Tuition for the 2011-12 academic year is $ 17,900. In addition, the following fees where applicable:

• $430 for grade 12 senior fee (includes retreat, yearbook, and graduation expenses)

• $7,300 for David program tuition • $300 for all those in the instrumental or choral

music programs • $1,000 - $1,800 for those on private bus

a. The non-refundable $1,000 payment made at initial enrollment acceptance is a tuition credit b. Registration for grades 10-12 occurs each spring and includes a non-refundable $300 fee collected separately along with a $50 rostering fee - $250 is a credit towards 2011-12 tuition. c. Application fees collected from prospective students are non-refundable and are not tuition credits. d. Scholarship and financial aid credits are divided evenly by semester. e. Returned checks generate a $15 bank fee, which we pass along. f. Overdue balances cause monthly fees equal to the greater of $20 or 1% of the balance. g. Financial aid is available and must be applied for annually. 2. Payment Options (available to all students) a. Semester Invoices: If you do not enroll in the monthly plan, you will automatically receive semester invoices from La Salle due in full July 1st and

November 15th. Late fee assessments begin on these dates. La Salle does NOT accept credit card payments for tuition, but HES, our monthly vendor will accept credit card payments for BOTH semester and monthly invoices (with a convenience fee). b. Monthly Installments: We urge all families who cannot respond fully and on time to semester invoices to please enroll in the April to January monthly payment plan offered through Higher Education Services (HES), who can be contacted at (800) 422-0010. There is a $40 per family membership fee. 3. All students must meet each semester's obligation on time or must be on time in the monthly HES program in order to attend La Salle. There are no other special payment plans. Please enroll in HES and stay current to avoid loss of student participation privileges. Should an unpaid balance still result, it will lead to late fees and loss of both curricular and extracurricular participation, including reception of grades, transcripts, and graduation. If membership in HES is lost, full payment is due immediately to La Salle. 4. Office of Academic Affairs

Thomas R. Barna Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs Upperclass Registration Registration and course selection for current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors for the 2011-2012 school year will soon begin. This process traditionally takes place between early February and mid April. Selecting courses over a period of weeks has a number of benefits. Primarily, it will allow the student body to get personally involved in the selection process while exploring options related to their ‘wants’ and ‘needs’. As is customary, current juniors will be the first to select their courses. Our 11th graders will begin the process during February in their Group Advisory class. Sophomore and freshmen students will follow in early March using the same means. Course selection for upperclassmen is expected to end prior to the Easter Break on April 15, 2011. Motivated by the spirit of “going green”, La Salle’s curricular guide will once again be provided in a digital format. It should be noted that students have already been using this registration resource located on the school’s website and in the Naviance scheduling software. Like last year, the updated Program of Studies will be introduced in advisory classes. Students will be reintroduced to La Salle’s course requirements and the curricular options at this time. These class meetings will be followed by additional and more personal interactions with counselors, teachers, and students. Parental involvement has been, and will continue to be, an important part in the development and oversight of the course selection process. Eventually, parents can expect to “sign off” on the list of approved courses their sons have selected. As noted, the selection protocol presents each student with meaningful opportunities to discuss their personal curricular plan. This is intentional. If done properly, it will minimize surprises while producing predictable outcomes when schedules are received in August. Finally, the preregistration fee of $300 will be due on Monday, February 7, 2011. The registration and course selection process is described as follows: Mr. Barna, Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs, addresses the student body through a WEXP broadcast in late January. This broadcast outlines La Salle’s registration procedures and timeline. Additionally, students are reminded of their registration fee obligation – without it the process does not move forward. It is assumed that students who do not pay their fee are not intending to return for the next academic year. Students review the updated Program of Studies with help from their counselors in Group Advisory classes. Additional guidance is dispensed in this small group setting. The process is managed weekly by counselors

through advisory class. During this “What can I take?” and/or”What should I take?” segment, students consult their parents, teachers, and counselors. Mr. Barna and Mr. Coggins visit all Group Advisory classes to provide appropriate information specific to the administration of the curriculum. Meanwhile, counselors, teachers, administrators, students, and parents continue to discuss options associated with course selection. Completion depends on a variety of mitigating factors. One reason may include sorting out general, regular, and advanced placements. This slows the process and should not be viewed as a problem. By late March students and their parents are expected to review a “Course Selection Validation” form. A parent signature, approving the selected courses, finalizes the process. The selection process ends school wide in late March. Students and/or parents have until Friday, April 15, 2011, to request changes by working through the appropriate teacher and/or counselor. During the month of April and May, resources are determined and secured for the new academic year. The office of Academic Affairs officially begins scheduling the courses requested at this time. The success of this labor-intensive process is directly related to the timeliness of meeting deadlines and completeness of information. Please encourage your son to take the entire process seriously. May, June, and July are not the time for students to reopen the course selection process. Students experiencing scheduling conflicts are contacted personally throughout the summer to resolve them. Once the school year begins there are NO course changes without compelling educational reasons such as a medical issue or diagnosed and documented learning difference. Changes made after the April 15th deadline are strongly discouraged. A Note Regarding Academic Honors The grade point averages of La Salle students are determined twice a year at the end of each semester. It is at these times when our Honors lists are compiled. Please be aware that semester exams have not been completed with the submission of this article. La Salle will continue to include its Honor Roll in publications like The Belcroft as soon as grade point averages are made available. Additionally, you should know that La Salle notifies each Honor student’s appropriate parish. Please recognize that La Salle has no control over how each parish responds to our request to publicize your son’s academic success.

Julia K. Maher Assistant Principal for Student Affairs School Closings for Inclement Weather School closings will be communicated via the Alert Now messaging. We will also notify KYW (1060AM) radio as early as possible. Our school closing number is 333. La Salle’s website is also a source for such announcements. Two television stations will also carry information for La Salle – 6ABC and NBC10. In case of snow during a school day, parents will be notified via an Alert Now message, KYW radio, and the television stations as soon as a decision has been reached for an early dismissal. We would appreciate your cooperation in NOT calling the school on these days. La Salle Responds With three “dress down days” so far this year (October, November, January), we have been able to honor the requests from groups and organizations with monetary distributions totaling almost $8,000. The funds were used to support our Thanksgiving Food Drive (turkeys), Secret Santa (toys for critically ill children), Hustle for Muscle (Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy research),Three Day Run for the Cure, Kelly Rooney Foundation (cancer research), Breathing Room Foundation (support of families of terminally ill cancer patients), Inn Dwelling (Christmas Gift cards for needy families), Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart (money to Haiti and Dominican Republic), Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia, Mid-Atlantic Connection for PKU (improving the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by PKU and related metabolic disorders), De La Salle Blackfeet School in Browning, MT, Saint Francis of Assisi School in Gallup, NM (both of these are schools where our students did summer service projects last July). Three more dress down days will be held during the second semester. Applications for funds are being submitted by students, faculty, and staff.

Winter Dance The annual dance was held on Friday, January 21, 2011 with over 900 young people attending. Music was provided by DJ Miro Productions (James Mirynowski ’08). A good time was had by all. Senior 100 Day Celebration On Thursday, February 24, 2011, the annual event will be held to mark 100 Days Until Graduation for the Class of 2011. The seniors will be treated to dinner and a show with hypnotist, Kevin Hurley. This event has proven to be a great night for the seniors and the faculty and staff who join them. Attendance Reminder With cold and flu season already here, there may be days when your son in unable to attend school. La Salle understands this. Please remember an excused absence is one that is due to illness or family emergency. If your son is absent he should be proactive. Contacting a reliable classmate the night of the absence and/or communicating with the teacher at the earliest convenient time is expected. Absent students are responsible for missed work. On a related note, it is important to clarify that outside of illness or emergency, school attendance is compulsory. A family vacation does not qualify as an excused absence. School holidays and breaks are published well in advance so as to offer parents an opportunity to plan their vacations at a time that does not interfere with attendance policies. Families and their sons cannot expect teachers to accommodate missed work/opportunities for any unexcused absence. Unexcused absences during midterm or final examinations are strictly prohibited. Please keep in mind that attendance throughout the school year is vital to a student’s academic success. There is no doubt that the correlation between absences and grades is extraordinary. As a rule of thumb, students who miss school have grades that reflect their gaps in learning. Please support our efforts to have your son in school daily and on time. Remember, the school’s main number should NOT be used to report any student absence. All attendance matters are expected to be reported to the Attendance Line at (215) 402-4140 before 8:00 am. A note is required upon returning to school. Thank you for your help in this area.

Campus Store The school store has all of the necessities to start the second semester – all required paperbacks and stationery supplies. The store is open on Monday and Wednesday from 7:45 am to 2:00 pm and Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 7:45 am to 5:00 pm. Financial Aid Our college website, www.lschs.org/college has links to numerous scholarship search sites as well as a variety of posted scholarship opportunities. There’s money out there – don’t miss out! Be sure to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible. Many colleges have priority deadlines of February 15th or March 1st. This application must be completed in order to apply for state, federal, and institutional financial aid and deadlines must be met. Before filling out the FAFSA, register for a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov.This will serve as your electronic signature. It is important to fill out the form completely and to estimate if necessary. It is better to meet the deadline and make changes later than to miss the deadline and potentially miss out on financial aid. You can file the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. We strongly encourage everyone to fill out the FAFSA. At the very least it will make your son eligible for several low interest loans such as the Federal Stafford Loan (www.staffordloan.com). If there are extenuating circumstances that a college financial aid officer at a college where your son has been admitted should know, do not hesitate to report these changes or circumstances to the colleges. Certain colleges may also require either their own institutional financial aid form or the College Scholarship Services (CSS) Profile www.collegeboard.org/profile. Be aware of colleges’ requirements and meet the deadlines. Keep Grades Up Admissions decisions are contingent on the successful completion of all course work. Admissions officers reserve the right to question poor second semester performance and, in some cases, to reverse an admissions decision that has already been made. We have examples of students whose grades dropped second semester resulting in their receiving letters from the college or university they planned to attend informing them their acceptance will now be re-considered. Acceptances and Awards In March or April, your son should begin receiving merit and need based grant awards from the colleges to which he applied. After he compares award letters, he should pick which college he wants to attend and return the signed award letter to the chosen college. Pay close attention to deadlines for accepting the award

package. Deadlines are usually within two weeks after receiving the award letter. If he misses a deadline, he may risk losing a scholarship, grant, or loan assistance. College Admissions Process Communicate with the faculty and the College Counseling Department. Please encourage your son to thank the teachers who may have written letters of recommendation on his behalf. Also, please remember to bring copies of all college acceptance and scholarship letters to Mrs. O’Connell in the College Counseling Center. Decline admission offers to other colleges. After he has chosen and committed to a college, your son should write a note declining admission to colleges where he has been accepted but will not be attending. This will allow students on a wait list to be accepted and awarded the aid previously held for your son. Submit deposit and housing application. Once your son knows which college he wants to attend, he can submit a housing application and deposit if he will be living on campus. He needs to do this as soon as possible because most rooms are assigned on a first-come first-served basis. The National Reply Date is May 1st. Do not double deposit. Each year some seniors have a difficult time making up their minds about which college to enroll after they have been accepted. Students may not send deposits to more than one college on or after May 1st. This is called “double depositing” and is an unethical practice. Should the colleges involved determine that a student has “double deposited” your son’s admission may be jeopardized. This practice is unfair to other applicants. The “double depositor” is taking up a spot that could go to another student, who will instead be wait-listed or turned down. It is an acceptable practice to deposit at one college and maintain your name on a wait list at another; however, indicating to two colleges that you will be attending by sending deposits to both should not be considered.

College Admissions Process A wealth of information is available on the Internet about the College Search process. A good starting site is our comprehensive webpage: www.lschs.org/college. In addition, each college and university has its own website. According to our current seniors and recent graduates, visiting college campuses is most important in making a good decision. It is most informative if the visits occur while students are on campus so we strongly encourage visits during this second semester. Information about questions to ask on a college visit is available at www.NSSE.iub.edu. Students should send a follow-up email to the college admissions office after the visit. Information about making successful visits is also available in the College Match workbook that is required for Junior Advisory Class. Since many admission decisions will be based on the junior year GPA in college preparatory courses we suggest that students take their academic responsibilities most seriously. While participation in activities is a factor used to tip the scales in the admission process, primary focus is on the student’s GPA. The College Counselors look forward to working with you and your sons during this important transition time in their lives. Standardized Testing During first semester advisory class, juniors were introduced to the Test Preparation component in Naviance, available at our website. It contains a sample SAT and ACT that allows the students to experience both formats. Test prep packets are available for each type of test along with practice tests and tutorials for each section of the tests. Having experience with both types of standardized testing (SAT and ACT) will allow the students to determine the format where they will be most successful in follow-up testing. Each junior should have taken two of the same test – either the ACT with writing component or SAT – by the end of second semester junior year. Create a timeline for registering and taking standardized test keeping in mind any academic, extracurricular, or personal commitments, e.g. athletic schedules. The Physiology of Love

by Jo Ann Cohen, Ph.D. “When you carry out acts of kindness you get a wonderful feeling inside. It is as though something inside your body responds and says, ‘Yes, this is how I ought to feel.’” Rabbi Harold Kushner As a graduate student, one of my required courses was psychopharmacology. I studied the chemical basis of psychotropic drugs – basically, those drugs prescribed for mental illness. What’s the difference between anti-anxiety medication and an antidepressant? Do medications affect a male differently than a female? I learned that physiology can be changed by a mind boggling number of experiences. When it came time for the final, the class formed study groups. Our professor was from the medical school, and he had a reputation for creating untraditional assessments. We spent hours anticipating what might be covered on the three hour exam that would determine whether we passed or failed the course. We reviewed a slew of possibilities that might affect physiology in addition to chemical reactions that occur in response to specific types of medication. Which drugs might comprise the essence of what we needed to know? How does mental illness affect body chemistry? What life experience might we be examining for its chemical effect on our body? The day of the exam came, and we sat in silent anxiety, pens poised, as the professor wrote the question on the board in large cursive letters: “How come only fools fall in love?” Turns out the 1940 Frank Sinatra hit was the basis of my final grade. The idea that love is for fools is not new. In 1854, Abraham Lincoln used the same line in a speech in Peoria. Today, medical scientists continue to study the chemical repercussions of love. It turns out that the human body generates Dopamine, Norepinephrine, and Serotonin during the attraction phase of a relationship. These neurotransmitters produce the equivalent of a “runner’s high.” The break-up of a love affair is similar to what a runner feels when he suddenly stops exercising. So, if being in love makes you feel like you are not in your “right mind” you may be making an accurate assessment. Neuroscience continues to examine how the body reacts to emotion. Strong emotions cause significant, specific cortical and physiological reactions affecting everything from mood to resistance to disease. Even thinking of someone you love or appreciate, causes chemical reactions affecting every cell. Here are some urprising findings investigators uncovered: You can increase levels of Dopamine, Norepinephrine, and Serotonin by focusing on the positive aspects of situations. Persistent positive focus can reduce the level and length of depression. People who are in stable, caring relationships are less likely to suffer from clinical depression and are more likely to “roll with the punches.” As it turns out, a number of things increase Dopamine. These include exercise, fresh air, feeling appreciation, and happiness. No wonder psychologists prescribe exercise, time in the sun, laughing, and being with friends to treat negative emotion! So, on Valentine’s Day, when you see Cupid aiming his arrow, forget that medical science has determined he has dipped it in Dopamine, Norepinephrine, and Serotonin. Just remember that as Cupid pierces hearts, he provides an opportunity for love, the basic element for long lasting joy.

La Salle College High School Host's Leadership Day and Gathering with

Lasallian Volunteers

On Saturday, January 15, 2011, Lasallian Youth from five schools in the Christian

Brothers District of Eastern North America (DENA) gathered at La Salle College High

School for a day of faith, service, and community. The Leadership Day was planned

and led by Lasallian Service Corps leaders Rich Brazukas '11, Chris Catalino '11, Alex

Hicks '11, Pat Kerr '11, Dom Mirabile '11, and Brendan Stone '11. The participating

schools were Bishop Loughlin (NY), Saint John's College High School (DC), West

Catholic (PA), and La Salle Academy (NY), and La Salle College High School. In the morning, the approximately 45 Lasallian Youth and their moderators from the

Lasallian Schools participated in a day of prayer, service, reflection, and community

building. In the mid-afternoon, the Lasallian Volunteers who were making their mid-

year retreat in Jamison, PA, Christian Brothers, and guests joined the Lasallain

Youth (over 130 total Lasalli-

ans!) for liturgy, dinner, and

closing talk. The inspiring

closing talk, "Living the

Lasallian Misson," was given

by our own Dominic Mirabile.

Practical ideas for parents to help their children. Promote responsibility with clear expectations and consequences. Your responsibility as a parent is to clearly share your expectations with your son. Your son’s responsibility is to live up to those expectations. Your son is much more likely to remember and follow rules if he plays a role in setting them. Consider these areas of your son’s life:

• Homework. Perhaps you agree that your son can decide when he wants to do his homework. His part of the deal is to complete his homework. If he doesn't finish his assignments, he'll have to take the bad grade and deal with the consequences.

• Chores. Maybe you agree that he needs to do the laundry before he can borrow the car on Saturday nights. If those towels aren't stacked and folded, the car keys stay in your possession.

• Social events. Say you agree that he can spend the night at a friend's house after a party. His part of the deal is that he must call you when he gets there. If he doesn't call, you both agree he will have to come home early from the next party.

Having clear expectations means that your son knows the house rules and the consequences he will face if he breaks them. And your son will have no one to blame for a poor decision, but himself. Have a meaningful discussion about your son’s report card. It can be difficult to get teens to open up – especially when it comes to school-related subjects. But with the right attitude, you can have a meaningful discussion with your son about his report card – no matter what his grades are. Be sure to:

• Stay calm. Studies show that a parent's bad reaction can lead to worse grades in the future. If you're having trouble keeping your cool, say, "Let's talk about this after dinner."

• Have realistic expectations. Some parents believe that anything less than all A's is a "bad report card." Yet even the most gifted students will not necessarily do well in every subject.

• Ask questions. Rather than lecturing your son about his grades, let him talk. "How do you feel about these grades?" "Were you surprised by your English grade?" "What is your goal for your next report card?"

• Use positive reinforcement. Shocked that your son brought his D up to a B in geometry? Hide your surprise and say "I knew you had it in you!" Disappointed in a grade? Ask, "What did you learn that will help you raise that grade?"

• Ask what you can do. Do you need to enforce a regular study time?

Studies challenge commonly held beliefs about studying. Today, research can help answer three key questions. It can tell students where, what, and when to study.

1. Where is the best place to study? Most students have a single favorite study spot. But research shows that may not be the most effective for learning. Researchers gave college students a list of vocabulary words. Half the students memorized the words while sitting in a single spot on each of two days. The other half studied in a different room each day. The second group did far better.

2. What should you study? Most students tend to concentrate on one thing – vocabulary today, verb forms tomorrow. However, it actually helps to mix things up. This variety seems to leave a deeper impression on the brain.

3. When's the best time to study? Brain research says that students remember more if their studying is spaced out. That will give students a better result, without spending any more total time studying.


Studies show that your teen can become happier with kindness. Research shows that people who are actively kind to others actually score higher on measures of happiness than people who don't go out of their way to be kind. And happier people are found to be more motivated in general, which will help your son in school. To instill a sense of kindness in your son, encourage him to be:

• Compassionate. Kind people feel for others, even when they are not directly affected by a situation. Your son can do this by putting himself in others' shoes.

• Grateful. Kind people thank others. Your son should also use his manners regularly.

• Considerate. Kind people think of others' feelings, needs and wants. If your son is getting a snack, he should ask if you'd like one, too.

• Forgiving. Kind people realize that holding a grudge isn't effective. Your son will be happier if he isn't dwelling on the past.

Remind your son:

• Not to be mean or cruel. Suggest that he think before he speaks about others.

• Not to be insensitive. If a classmate says, "My binder broke!" your son's reply should not be, "And?" He should take the feelings of others into consideration.


Ten Resolutions That Show Your Kids You Care 1. Teach your children to trust you by seeing you as a role model. 2. Be patient, not just tolerant. Apologize when you make a mistake or do something you regret. 3. Ask teens what they need from you - and do whatever you can to meet those needs. 4. Listen to your teens, a lot. Avoid interrupting. 5. Teach your children about ethics, values and principles they can apply in choices and decision making. 6. Help them discover the feeling of gratitude, not just to say thank you. 7. Keep the promises you make. If you do not keep your word, acknowledge that. Help your teen understand the circumstances or choices that precipitated the change in your plans. 8. Answer your teen's questions and be consistent. When you notice behavioral changes in them, make yourself available and encourage them to talk about what is going on in their life. 9. Be understanding when they have a difficult time and let them know you will love them no matter what. 10. Be diligent. Have ongoing conversations with your kids about the risks of drugs and alcohol.

The presentation, "Character Does Matter", featured Ryan Manion Borek (sister of 1LT Travis Manion, USMC '99) and emphasized that Travis was an ordinary boy who faced the same choices and challenges during his time at La Salle as the audience does now. She went on to explain that Travis ultimately emerged as a Naval Academy graduate and dedicated Marine who stated, "If not me, then who?', when someone suggested he find a way to avoid a second tour of duty in Iraq, where he lost his life in 2007.

Neil Hartman Anchor and Reporter for Comcast SportsNet Sports fans throughout the Greater Philadelphia region have known Neil Hartman well for many years. With a career spanning nearly three decades, the veteran sportscaster was one of the original anchors hired by Comcast SportsNet in 1997. A multiple Emmy Award nominee, he is a two-time regional winner for best sports host. Neil has also been recognized as a Philadelphia Magazine “Best of Philly” sports host as well as “Sportscaster of the Year” by the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. Prior to Comcast SportsNet, he was a TV sportscaster in Springfield, MA and Toledo, OH. Making the major media market jump to Philadelphia, he worked as a sports anchor and host at WPHL-TV and KYW-TV as well as at WIP and WPHT radio. A special moment for Hartman was working in production for ABC Sports covering the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. He’ll never forget sitting next to Al Michaels when the famous quote “Do you believe in miracles?” was born as Michaels commented on the U.S. hockey team’s historic gold medal win. Growing up in Connecticut, Neil played high school baseball and basketball. He went on to Ithaca College and majored in television-radio with a minor in speech. When not in front of the camera, Neil donates his time and emcee skills to many non-profit organizations including the Coaches vs. Cancer program of the American Cancer Society. You can find their complete schedule on the school website. The Men of La Salle will be hosting a “tailgate” prior to the home game on February 4, 2011. Come early to school and make your way to the cafeteria starting at 6:00 pm for some pre-game food, drink, and 50/50 chances. We will all then cheer the Explorers onto victory over Father Judge.

Night At The Sixers February 25, 2011 7:00 pm Well Fargo Center Bring your son and join the Men of La Salle to watch the exciting 76’ers compete against league rivals, the Detroit Pistons. The admission includes an all-you-can-eat pass. Seating is limited, so reply quickly. Father/Son Bowling March 13, 2011 2:30 pm Facenda-Whitaker Lanes Come and join other La Salle dads with your son for an afternoon of fun and camaraderie. The event includes bowling, food/drink, and prizes.

Eagle Scout Michael Sanders ’12 first joined Cub Pack 107 while attending Saint Philip Neri School. In 2004, he crossed over to Boy Scout Troop 140 in Conshohocken, PA. While a member of Troop 140, Mike served as Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, and is currently an Instructor for the Troop. He was also inducted into the Order of the Arrow. Mike has earned twenty-five merit badges and completed a Mile Open-Water Swim. In 2009, Michael completed a 10-day high adventure hiking trek at Philmont Scout Reservation in Cimmaron, NM as well as completed his Eagle Scout Project. He and his team of fellow scouts refurbished the bleachers, benches, and handrails at the St. Philip Neri School soccer fields. Michael received his Eagle Scout medal at his Eagle Court of Honor on Sunday January 16, 2011 at St. Marks's Lutheran Church. At his Court of Honor, he received citations from State Senator Daylin Leach and State Representative Kate Harper. Michael was also presented with an American flag that was flown over the United States Capitol in his name on December 20, 2010.

Spring training for major league baseball is upon us and the Men of La Salle have already secured our date for the annual Father & Son baseball trip to Camden Yards in Baltimore. This annual event is one of the most popular events on the school calendar as it provides you with the opportunity to spend a unique day with your son regardless of whether you are a baseball fan or not.

Sunday, April 10, 2011The Orioles will be hosting the Texas Rangers!

$70.00 per person (considered a premium game), includes ticket and transportation.Game time is 1:30pm and the day will begin at LaSalle with a Mass in the gym at 9:00am. Buses will leave the school parking lot at 10:00am sharp to provide enough time before the game to explore the stadium and collect batting practice balls hit into our section. Seats are in the sunny lower boxes along the left field foul line.After the game, time will be allotted to venture over to the Inner Harbor for a bite to eat and other entertainment. Buses will leave from the Aquarium exactly at 7:00pm.
