February is the month of Valentine’s Day (14th), Groundhog Day (2nd), The Day the Music Died (3rd),and fi nally, Public

Sleeping Day (28th). February is also Black History month, American Heart month, and Creative Romance month. Unoffi cially, Feb 16th is National “Do a Grouch a Favor Day,” which coincides with a certain magazine pub-lisher’s birthday. Make of that what you will. If the long winter nights are getting you down, consider fi nding something new to celebrate. Personally, I’m circling “National

Baked Alaska Day” (1st), and “Shower with a Friend Day” (5th)! Of course, this month we address romance and relationships. You’ll fi nd great insights by Rev. David Ridge of Living Water Unity Church in Arvada, and we’re excited to present articles from Jim and Ruth Sha-ron, and Rob and Janelle Alex. Both of these couples work together, helping and counseling people, and have written books that include your Natural Awakenings publishers! Secrets of a Soulful Marriage: Creating and Sustaining a Loving, Sacred Relationship and Inspiring Couples In Business + In Love are great resources for you. Check out their articles on pages 20-21 and perhaps you’ll want to pick up their books and read with your partner. Additionally, we incorporated a special section on Sleep issues, with great tips from local experts on the best way to get a good night’s rest for you and your whole family. If better sleep is one of your resolutions this year, see those eye-opening articles pages 16-18, and perhaps seek out the advice of one of the experts to help you get back on track. Recently, our computers needed some fi ne-tuning, and we recommend Doug Osborne, 720-581-2438. He is located in Parker, but can usually fi x/diagnose via remote connection. He does good work at fair prices.

Lastly, don’t forget to pick up a copy of our January annual Healthy Living Directory of wellness resources! These will be available all year wherever you pick up Natural Awakenings. There are experts, services and products that you won’t fi nd in the regular monthly issues.

We hope you have a wonderful Valentine’s Day (or Baked Alaska Day) and don’t forget: “A good laugh and a long sleep

are the best cures in the doctor’s book.” ~Irish Proverb

AWAKEN HBL Center, 2100 W Littleton Blvd., on Monday, February 9th, 7-8pm and Thursday, February 19th, Noon-1pm. According to creator Dr. Michael Cotton DC, HBL allows individuals to alter their elec-troencephalogram (EEG) brain waves to peaceful levels on par with meditators studying under the Dalai Lama, many of whom have practiced meditation four hours per day over decades. Even beginning HBL clients achieve that level in 10 minutes or less! From this peak state, clients access the “higher” parts of the brain where inspiration, clarity and enthusiasm spring from. Clients report an increase in positive thoughts, improved relationships, increased motivation for work, chores and healthy habits. “It’s humbling to hear the remarkable, life-changing results that my clients share about improved relationships, new positive outlook on life, and health benefi ts they achieve by practicing Higher Brain Living,” said Kent Johnson, Advanced Facilitator. Are you ready to start creating the habits that will support your best self? Join Kent Johnson at one of these presentations to see if Higher Brain Living is a fi t for you. Eduardo KobraBrazilian cover artist Eduardo Kobra takes his unique style to transform drab city walls into colorful kaleidoscopic scenes that delight, inspire and intrigue passersby. Many of Kobra’s larger-than-life photorealistic murals depict legendary fi gures and images, reinterpreting them in his signature geometric blocks of color. The self-taught artist has used the streets as his canvas since age 12, when he joined a São Paulo graffi ti crew to express his frustrations and creativity. Today an artistic legend in his own right, Kobra continues to innovate using recycled materials and techniques such as tromp l’oeil on sidewalk paintings, where 3D fi gures appear to burst from the pavement. Kobra often does detailed research on the neighborhoods where he creates his nostalgic murals to generate historically accurate yet modernized depictions of bygone eras. His project “Memory Walls,” in his hometown, São Paulo, seeks to transform the urban landscape through art and rescue memories of the city. The cover image is of a mural Kobra painted in Chelsea, recreating Alfred Eisenstaedt’s iconic 1945 photo of a couple kissing in Times Square on V-J Day.

Cultivate Your Inner Child to Heal YourselfBy Master Yun Xiang Tseng

healthbriefs Marriage is Good for the HeartResearch from the New

York University School of Medicine found that married people have signif-icantly less cardiovascular disease (CVD) than those that are divorced, widowed or otherwise single. The study used data on the rates of CVD from the health surveys of more than 3.5 million men and women collected at 20,000 U.S. medical centers. Married people under 50 had 12 percent lower incidence of heart disease than single people. Married couples between 51 and 60 years old had a 7 percent lower risk, while those over 60 had a 4 percent lower risk. The results were presented at the 2014 scientifi c sessions of the American College of Cardiology. Researcher and cardiologist Jeffrey Berger recommends that doctors show increased diligence for single patients: “If one of my patients is recently widowed or divorced, I’m increasingly vigilant about ex-amining them for signs of any type of cardio-vascular disease and depression,” he says.

Calcium and Vitamin D May Help Prevent Dental DecayA study from Argentina’s

Buenos Aires University has linked dental caries to low levels of calcium and vitamin D. Dental status and caries risk were assessed by determining the number of decayed, miss-ing and fi lled teeth, the amount of plaque and the sugar intake of 106 women of the average age of 24. Calcium levels were defi cient among nearly 60 percent of the women, 70 percent had low blood levels of vitamin D, 72 percent consumed soft drinks daily and all of them presented gingivitis (gum disease). The third with the highest caries scores and decayed or missing teeth had signifi cantly lower calcium intake and vitamin D levels and signifi cantly higher intake of protein and soft drinks, plus signifi cantly higher plaque and sugar intake compared with the rest of the women. The researchers concluded that low calcium intake is associated with a high risk of dental caries and a greater severity of oral disease. “Ade-quate nutritional status of calcium and vitamin D could be an additional factor that may help preserve good oral health,” they state.

In ancient times, teachers often talked about the importance of nurturing

and maintaining a child’s softness, mentality and innocence. After we are born, the post-heaven mind and body is disturbed by desires, status,

and emotions. These things take us away

from our Dao or true path. Return

to simplicity, childhood and your innocence to follow the Dao by apply-ing the three pure treasures of mercy, conscience and forgiveness.

• In Daoism, we fi rst look to heal and change our own outlook to help heal others. Apply forgiveness and mercy to yourself – you are special and you deserve the best that life has to offer. Respect others and how they process and interpret situations. Every person is entitled to choose and learn from their successes and failures. Respect yourself, your choices and others equally.

• Support your inner child with stillness-sitting, like meditation. Use movement, combined with mind and intention, like tai chi, to heal the body, mind and spirit. Eat and drink that which nurtures your body and soul. Every moment could be joyful when you are connected to your innocence.

• Set your goals to heal your wounds, set aside your expec-tations and follow the natural fl ow around you. This can help you to reconnect with your innocent mind and intent, to cultivate childlike softness and gentleness in each of your relationships, business and family life. I wish everyone to return to their childlike char-acter and merge with your Master Within.

Master Yun Xiang Tseng (Chen) is a 25th generation Long Men Sect Priest and 14th generation Wu Dang Zhang SanFeng lineage holder. He teaches classes at Dao House in Estes Park. See ad page 11.

Enhance your Life with Bioenergy PatchesBioenergy patches are worn on the upper left shoulder for

several days to provide benefi ts in pain & infl ammation, or immune boosting, to take the place of drugs and chemicals and are appropriate for any age. AlphaBio Centrix in Nevada makes energetic health, wellness and protection products for cell phones, humans and animals, and notes that over 50 therapies have been developed with feedback from Doctors and Therapists. Their bioenergy patches are made from a specialized Biofeedback material designed for NASA to interline space suits – a poly/vinyl blend embedded with metallized fragments which hold and transfer RF (radio frequency). Engineers program this material with benefi cial frequencies to interact with the Central Nervous System. The CNS uses the digital information it recognizes and ignores the rest, eliminating possible side effects or overdose. The skin-friendly, FDA-approved adhesive is hypoallergenic and waterproof. AlphaBio Centrix also makes EMR Defender-ElectroMagnetic Radiation patches for cell phones and patches to boost pets im-mune system and calm them. Learn more at AlphaBioCentrix.com. See ad page 8.

A Healthy Approach to Intestinal MaintenanceMany naturopathic doctors are

using the four-letter acronym SIBO, but too many people don’t know that it stands for small intes-tinal bacterial overgrowth. This is a condition in which there are too many bacteria in the small intestine, which can produce some signifi cant systemic symptoms and make us sick. There are always bacteria in the small intestine and they are essential to the absorption of nutrients and the creation of some vitamins, but they tend to live mostly at the end of the tract. Problems in the small intestines can cause constipation, bloat-ing, abdominal pain, fatigue and even anemia, because iron and vitamin B12 are absorbed here. Allopathic medicine treats this overgrowth with antibiotics that tend to stay in the intestinal tract, so after killing off the bacteria, re-seeding must be done with probiotics. A more natural solution may be to kill off the bacteria with an enhanced aqueous silver colloid before re-seeding. Of course, after either technique, taking herbs such as plan-tain, licorice, marshmallow and slippery elm bark will help to heal the damage, according to Andrew Chevallier, a fellow of the National Institute of Medicinal Herbalists, writing in the Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine. Steven Frank is an innovative Herbalist at Nature’s Rite. Reach him at 800-991-7088 or MyNaturesRite.com See ad page 13.

GMO PushbackHawaii Lobbies for Anti-GMO LawsThe Aloha State enjoys a year-round growing season, with multiple harvests annually. Last year, the Hawaiian island of Kauai passed genetically modifi ed organism (GMO) farming restrictions, but they were overturned in court. Now, Maui County, which includes the Hawaiian islands of Maui, Lanai and Molokai, has approved a moratorium

on the cultivation of genetically modifi ed crops. The majority of Monsanto’s GMO corn seed sold to farmers in Argentina, Brazil and the U.S. comes from its Maui operation. If the law stands, Monsanto and Dow AgroSci-ences, another biotech fi rm with operations in Maui County, will need to seek alternatives. Lawsuits have already been fi led by both opponents of

the ban and proponents that want rigorous enforcement built in. Michael Lilly, former attorney general of Hawaii, expects the new law to be struck down like the previous Kauai attempt on grounds that state law supersedes it, although ap-peals in that case are underway. Meanwhile, an injunction has stalled the whole process. The message from anti-GMO forces is that although giant fi rms have deep pockets and many options, staunch determination to stem the tide of GMO crops worldwide may eventually bear the sweet fruit of victory.

Forward LeapBatteries that Last 1,000 Years A group of Swedish researchers has discovered an unconventional way to give new life to recharge-able lithium-ion batteries, which power everything from iPhones to electric cars, using pine resin and alfalfa seeds. The researchers plan to take up to two years to improve the chemistry of the product, and claim that the recycled batteries could last up to 1,000 years, according to researcher David Brandell. It has been estimated that de-mand for the batteries from au-tomobile manufacturers could explode up to 400 percent in the next six years. The researchers see the technology as a global antidote to current methods for recycling manufactured Li-ion batteries that are energy-intensive and require toxic materials to manufacture.

Greenwashing ConundrumBiodegradable Plastic Bags Are a HoaxIn 2010, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) proposed recommendations for environmental marketing claims. The agency has sent warning letters to 15 marketers informing them that their claims may be deceptive, and requested more scientifi c evidence that plastic bags labeled as biode-gradable, or “oxodegradable”, implying the bag will break down in time when exposed to oxygen, were true to the claim. Because many bags are dumped in the low-oxygen environment of a landfi ll, the FTC considers those adver-tised benefi ts as dubious. Joseph Greene, a professor at California State University, Chico, points out that oxodegradable should be amended to “oxofragmentable” to be more accurate, because the plastics just break into smaller and smaller pieces. Chemically, they don’t break down into anything less hazardous. In fact,

if these plastic bags disintegrate in the ocean, the fragments will be about the right size for sea creatures to mistake them for plankton.

Living Together2014 Global Peace Index The world has be-come less peaceful over the last seven years, according to the 2014 Global Peace Index. It mea-sures peace in 162 countries according to 22 indicators that gauge both the absence and fear of violence. This is the seventh year the index has been produced. Results from the 2014 Global Peace Index show that since 2008, 111 countries have deteriorated in levels of peace, while 51 increased. Europe retains its position as the most peaceful region, with 14 of the top 20 most peaceful countries. The world has become signifi cantly less peaceful over the last year, mainly due to a rise in terrorist activity, confl icts being fought, and refugees and other displaced people. As for the human toll, 500 million people live in countries at risk of instability and confl ict, 200 million of whom live below the poverty line. The global economic impact of violence reached $9.8 trillion last year, equal to twice the total gross domestic product of Africa. Would you like to sleep deeply, feel refreshed, live a life full of

health and energy, and enjoy more inner peace? According to the U.S. Center for Dis-ease Control and Prevention, “depres-sion is the most common type of mental illness, affecting more than 26% of the U.S. adult population,” and “mental disorders, especially depressive disor-ders, are strongly related to…many risk behaviors for chronic disease such as physical inactivity, smoking, excessive drinking and insuffi cient sleep.” They also state that 28% of Americans report frequent insuffi cient sleep (<7-9hrs, >14 days in past 30 days). Further, the Na-tional Institute of Mental Health reports 18% of the U.S. population suffers from anxiety disorders and that, over time, routine stress can lead to major disease. Modern science has begun to learn what healers, shamans, and modern day holistic doctors have known for thousands of years. According to Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, founding Executive Director of the Center for Mindfulness

in Medicine at the University of Massa-chusetts Medical School, meditation and mindfulness practice helps people cope with stress, anxiety, pain, and illness. It is used in hospitals around the world. The best time to meditate is just after rising. Drink a glass of warm water and do some stretching and yoga, then sit down to meditate. You may want to dance, make sounds, sing, or vocalize. These practices energize and center the start of your day. If things are on your mind, take a moment to write them down to clear your head before closing your eyes to meditate. You can

also stare softly at a candle fl ame if you are uncomfortable closing your eyes. If you can not fall asleep, or wake up in the night, sit up and meditate. Don’t just lie there hoping and fi ghting with your mind to fall asleep. Deep breathing is key to medita-tion, as is staying focused on your body; try systematically relaxing all parts of your body. Visualize something that brings you feelings of peace, love and happiness. Toning, humming, lightly singing the vowels or musical scale also works won-ders. Concentrating on your feet or naval area also helps. We want to stop the inces-sant thinking and bring our minds into the present, into an embodied connection. EFT tapping and Focusing also work very well. Oftentimes behind chronic insomnia is unresolved trauma, emotional or re-lationship issues. Practicing meditation and mindfulness techniques can resolve temporary sleeping issues, as well as build a strong foundation for resolving chronic insomnia. For serious sleep issues there are holistic therapists and health practitioners that can get you sleeping deeply, knowing inner peace and well-being again.

Hormones and Sleep: A Two-Way StreetBy Stacy R. Livingwell, M.D.

Hormonal imbalances can wreak hav-oc on sleep and inadequate sleep

can affect hormone levels. The result is a vicious cycle of sleeplessness. According to the National Sleep Foundation, women are more likely to report sleep problems, yet the close link between sleep and hor-mones affects both men and women. Researchers have shown that women who suffer from hot fl ashes during perimenopause are more likely to have associated sleep problems. Declining estrogen levels can cause both. Estro-gen increases total sleep time, increases REM sleep, and decreases the number of awakenings at night. Declining estrogen is also seen in women: after pregnancy and childbirth; with neuroendocrine dis-orders; eating disorders; extreme exercise or training; and gluten intolerance. Another hormone, progesterone, has profound effects on sleep and can have sedative qualities because it stimulates GABA receptors in the brain, which have a soothing effect that can promote sleep. In women, progesterone levels change during the monthly menstrual cycle and tend to decrease as women approach menopause. Women suffering from PMS often experience poor sleep, possibly due to declining progesterone levels in the second half of their menstrual cycle. For men, testosterone defi ciency is associated with fatigue, sleep issues, low energy and reduced libido. In a 2011 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, re-searchers found that less than fi ve hours of sleep per night can signifi cantly re-duce testosterone levels in men similar to aging 10-15 years. Sleep experts now recognize “chron-ic partial sleep deprivation,” as Ameri-

cans are getting nearly two hours less sleep per night than they did 50 years ago. During this time, the incidence of chronic diseases such as obesity, diabe-tes, cardiovascular disease and mood disorders have increased. Current evidence suggests that poor sleep may have a greater role in the epidemics of these diseases than previously thought. Another hormone called leptin signals the brain to suppress appetite when the stomach is full and satis-fi ed. With less sleep, leptin levels fall, causing more eating. Ghrelin is the hormone that stimulates appetite. With poor sleep, ghrelin levels increase caus-ing an increased appetite, particularly for carbohydrates. Research shows poor sleep can lead to glucose intolerance and insulin resistance - risk factors for weight gain, obesity, type 2 diabetes, infertility and polycystic ovarian syndrome. These ef-fects are exacerbated by higher levels of cortisol due to poor sleep. It is important to identify the cause of the sleep problem with an evaluation done by a health care provider, but there are some simple steps that can be taken to improve sleep naturally. The fi rst step is to prioritize sleep in your wellness plan. Further steps that can be taken include:

• Eating a nutrient dense diet with ade-quate amounts of healthy fats, proteins, vitamin D, magnesium, and B-vitamins

• Avoiding sugar, caffeine, nicotine and alcohol, particularly in the afternoons and evenings as these can interfere with sleep

• Exercise daily, but avoid strenuous ex-ercise before bed as this can increase hormone levels that disrupt sleep

• Implement a daily and nightly rou-tine, and follow it

• Try to go to bed and wake up at the same times each day, even on weekends, to help maintain regular hormone cycles

• Manage stress levels through mind-body practices such as meditation, prayer, and other relaxation techniques

• Find time daily to get outside in the fresh air and sunlight- this helps im-prove melatonin levels at night

• Review your sleep environment: remove all artifi cial lights and avoid “screen time” before bedtime; keep your room temperature below 70 degrees; remove sources of noise and EMFs while you are asleep

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has declared

insuffi cient sleep a public health epidemic. Having treated hundreds of insomniacs since 2010, I have found in my practice that people who have suffered insomnia report that sleep problems may start with a traumatic event, the birth of a child, or drastic hormonal changes. But more commonly, they realize that it was caused by poor habits around sleep and many years of not manag-ing stress properly. Here are some of the best tips to help you fall asleep, stay asleep, or even prevent sleep problems from developing.

1Consume protein within half an hour upon waking. It regulates

cortisol levels, which in turn helps regulate blood sugar and promotes healthy sleep.

2Try not to drink caffeine past noon. Some people have a de-

fective gene in the liver and are un-able to process caffeine regardless.

3Alcohol may make you drowsy but it has a rebound effect after

a few hours of sleep and it may cause insomnia or restless sleep. Enjoy one or two drinks no later than 6pm.

4Moderate exercise can help insomnia, vigorous exercise can

exacerbate it especially when done in the afternoon or evening.

5Free the clutter of your bedroom and only use it for sleep and sex.

6Winding down 1 to 3 hours prior to bed is effective for most

people. An electronic curfew is recommended for that period of time.

7Sleep is peaceful communion with Self according to the

Chinese. Meditating, especially in the evening, is highly benefi cial. Body-centered and mindful-based

psychotherapy can bring healing and promote peaceful sleep.

8Complement your efforts with acupuncture, massage, and

yoga. It can help the nervous and hormonal systems get balanced.

9The Golden rule of sleep - it is all about how you feel during the day

not about how many hours you slept!

BRINGING MORE THAN HOMEWORK HOMEBy Ryan Hogan

It’s the time of year when we send our kids back to school from the holidays. Unfortunately, while schools are good places to learn they are great places to catch a disease. In fact, children’s Upper respiratory illnesses (URI’s) cause more doctor visits and missed school days than any other illness in the US. Luckily, there are a few things you can do at home to help reduce the chances of your child getting sick at school this year.

HOW?

Before we talk prevention, we need to know how infection spreads. Many childhood illnesses are caused by viruses and bacteria that are transferred from person to person. URI’s increase in fall and winter as we spend more time crowded indoors. All it takes is one sick child, going to school for the spread to begin. Small droplets from a child’s cough or sneeze travel through the air and land on surfaces like desks, doorknobs and people. These germs are easily spread when someone touches the contaminated object and then pro-ceeds to touch their eyes, nose or mouth. Children’s immune systems are less mature than those of adults, so they’re more vulnerable to these germs. Washing your hands and your nasal passages and also keeping their hands away from their nose, eyes and mouth are the most preventative habits to form at a young age.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Our best defense is to stop cold germs where they breed. Good hand-washing is the most effective way to prevent bac-teria and viruses from spreading. Wash your hands after using the bathroom, blowing your nose, handling trash and prior to touching food to help eliminate germs. Soap and water should be used for 20 seconds (about as long as it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice). Using alcohol-based hand cleaners is also effective. Remind your child to use the

sanitizer before eating snacks, lunch and after using a shared computer mouse, pencil sharpener, water fountain or other community objects.

Now, most people know we need to wash our hands, but one thing most people don’t really relate their health to is nasal hygiene. Using a saline spray with xylitol, such as Xlear Nasal Spray, is safe for all ages. Research has shown this natural sweetener is useful in preventing bacterial otitis media (ear infections), among other upper respiratory problems that are most likely to occur in fall and winter months. Additional xylitol studies have also shown a significant reduction in asth-ma attacks when a xylitol nasal spray is used on a daily basis. Xylitol affects nose and throat bacteria in two ways:

• Decreases the adherence of harmful bacteria on their surface cells.

• Stimulates the body’s own natural defense system

Since the average American child has six to ten colds a year, using a xylitol nasal spray is a safe and effective way to pro-mote better upper respiratory health, year round.

FINAL HEALTHY TIPS

In addition to frequent hand-washing, teach your child some other school health basics:

• Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.

• Give your child a package of tissues to keep in his or her desk.

• Encourage your child not to share water bottles, food or other personal items.

• Ask your child’s teacher to include hand-washing time before lunch or snacks.

• Have your whole family practice nasal hygiene and the use of xylitol saline spray like Xlear.

Even with all of these tips, your kids are bound to come down with something over the course of the school year. We all get sick at some point or another, forming healthier habits and maintaining a positive attitude is all we can do as parents.

Enlightened Forgiveness by Rev. David Ridge

“Forgive and forget” rings hollow to someone suffering

hurt feelings or signifi cant disappointment. Empty platitudes like “forgive and forget” rarely make the sufferer feel any better. What if true forgiveness is not an action after the fact, but an attitude towards the present moment that can be learned? Consider Jason and Sarah. Jason expected something of Sarah that she did not fulfi ll. It could have been an explicit promise, an implicit responsibility, or the fulfi llment of a shared goal. That unmet expectation caused Jason’s grievance – not Sarah. It was caused by Jason’s attachment to the unrealized outcome. Jason could either “forgive” or “forget” Sarah – either “let it go” or remove Sarah from his life. But a more enlightened forgiveness relieves his grievance and helps him realize joy in each moment. The key is to dissolve his expectation(attachment to outcome) by giving unconditional love to the present moment, not to Sarah. It is completely an “inside job.” If you’re a parent, you remember the fi rst time you held your child and the unconditional love you felt for this new, perfect, innocent life. But what if you don’t remember what unconditional love feels like? What if I told you, “I Love You… unconditionally! That no matter what you’ve done or who you are,

Connecting Spirituallywith Your Partnerby Jim Sharon, EdD and Ruth Sharon, MS

“As I do my personal growth work and come to know more of my true essence, I realize I am soulfully

connected to you and to all of life”1

Local Experts on Relationships

Being in a committed relationship is like immersion in a holy

crucible, in which your defenses can soften and melt away. The ego strives for separateness and autonomy. Constructing ways to keep the other away becomes less functional and attractive in a love relationship. Your soul longs to unify. What are some helpful ways to reconcile living with the paradox of being an autonomous person and merging as a couple? When your inner awareness and trust level are high and your longing for intimacy is strong, you are poised to connect soulfully. You become more available to love and be loved. You are more compassionate in the presence of past wounds and can be an active agent in healing each other’s residual pain from the past. In this way, love serves as a poultice that draws impurities to the surface to be dissipated. When the illusion of separation recedes, you witness the soul of your beloved with its beauty and power.

When you notice your protective emotional walls rising, take a moment to step back. Ask yourself, “What am I reacting to? What is this feeling? What do I need? How can I express this to my partner? How can I engage in conscious, soulful connection? What qualities and behaviors am I committed to bringing forth for self- and couple-actualization?” Remember that major lessons your soul is learning are often expressed unconsciously in your relationships. Actively doing your personal work clears the path for your soulful marriage to thrive. When you can shift your focus away from the reactive power and control patterns to the essence of who your partner is, you treat each other with more respect and kindness. Practicing unconditional love allows your relationship to serve as a healing balm that soothes and comforts both of you. Day by day, choose to cherish each other more and more. Deepen yourRomantic

RelationshipBy Rob & Janelle Alex, PhD’s

Relationships are truly amazing op-portunities for spiritual growth and

consciousness expansion. However, these beautiful opportunities do not necessarily show up as fl owers and can-dy or yummy foot massages. Instead, you may encounter powerful challenges in your relationship. It is normal to have expectations of what your relationship should be like or how your sweetheart should behave in situations, but your sweetie may have different ideas. When you are in a committed, romantic partnership, it’s like being in business together – the business of life. It is vital that you work together as a team. The challenges, as well as the roman-tic, playful and sexy moments, between the two of you can be a spiritual path that you can traverse together. Some simple secrets for keeping your relationship sacred and sexy from our book, Inspiring Couples In Business and In Love.

Let go of the need to be right. Be will-ing to see things from your beloved’s viewpoint. You don’t have to change your mind. Just be willing to step back and try and see it as he/she does.

What is true for you may not be true for him/her. Just because something is absolutely true for you doesn’t mean that it is true for your loving partner. Situations, experiences and emotions are viewed through our archetypal lens, our inner personalities, our previous experiences, our belief systems, and our expectations of others.

Use deep listening. During conversa-tion, make the effort to focus on him/her. Stop whatever else you are doing. Really listen. Look at your sweetie.

Touch your partner. Physical touch is key. A peck on the lips as you rush out the door isn’t going to cut it either. Take a few extra seconds and look into your lover’s eyes. Lay your hand on his/her arm when you are talking – be affectionate.

Make time for just you. This is espe-cially true if you work together. Find a hobby that you enjoy, do your workout, read a book, attend a seminar or event, or fi nd a quiet space to meditate. Re-member to honor your individual self.

Do something new together. A unique con-cept that we often teach couples is couple’s dream work. Learn how to explore your dreams and your partner’s dreams. Or, take ski lessons, attend puppy training together, cooking lessons, art lessons, etc.

Discover your money personalities and your individual animal energies. These inner personalities, inner animals and uni-versal energetic soul patterns offer you key insight into yourself and into your partner.

Experience Transcendent Lovemaking™ together. Recognizing the power your sex life has on your relationship, your ca-reer, and your spiritual connection opens up portals of transformation and creativ-ity that you can only dream of.

Set a path without reinventing the wheel. If you have honored yourself and your relationship by reading this article, then choose at least one or two of the above suggestions and implement them into your life today!

that I will ALWAYS Love you. That you don’t have to earn my love, you already deserve it just by existing. You are amazing, you are beautiful, and you are perfect exactly how you are.” Any experience you’ve had of expressing or receiving unconditional love is your Touchstone. Notice that when you recall your touchstone moment in detail, you are once again experiencing that love. All other things fade into the background because your focus is on that unconditional love fl owing through you. For the next 21 days, take one minute every hour to recall your touchstone. The practice of recalling your touchstone is enlightened forgiveness. This practice transforms your moment. Every aspect of that moment refl ects the glory of that unconditional love. Every expectation you held in that moment is dissolved by the refl ected radiance of that love. Your grievance no longer has any expectation supporting it -- and it too disappears. Thus, true forgiveness is practicing unconditional love in the moment. The choices you make determine your experience, not necessarily by the events that you draw into your life but by your response to the events that occur in your life. True forgiveness will transform your life! Rev. David Ridge is the minister of the Unity community in Arvada. For a list of the Unity communities near you, visit UnityofColorado.org.See ad page 14.

CONSCIOUS DATINGJill Crosby on Looking for Love Online

by S. Alison Chabonais

Jill Crosby, owner and founder of the Conscious Dating Network, created her fl agship online dating

site, SpiritualSingles.com 15 years ago. NaturalAwakeningsSingles.com shares the same database. Today, the Conscious Dating Network is the largest of its kind.

How has online dating contin-ued to evolve and what trends do you see now?The stigma about meeting someone online has completely dissolved as suc-cess stories have become so common. It’s like shopping online—you can look at many different varieties and styles to fi nd exactly what you are looking for, rather than physically searching store after store hoping to fi nd something you like. Technology has made a tremendous difference in price, accessibility and reach. Today, members post selfi es as headshots, shoot their own videos and can access potential matches anywhere in the world.

What distinguishes conscious dating sites like NaturalAwakeningsSingles.com from mainstream sites?Natural Awakenings Singles is a niche dating site for those that are conscious, spiritual and green. Singles with specifi c interests, passions and lifestyles usually prefer niche dating sites because they al-low for more targeted search results, pro-vided that the member database is large enough. Our database of more than 90,000 members globally is considered large for a niche. Mainstream sites may have more members; however, they re-quire far more time and effort in sorting through profi les to fi nd those with whom we might have something in common. Natural Awakenings Singles is also much more generous than conventional pay models, in that free members can read and reply to personal messages and live instant messages sent from

subscribing members. Most mainstream sites make members pay to read and reply to messages. Our primary goal is for our singles to become couples—to facilitate the tremendous amount of success our members experience, we do many things differently.

Have you seen any overall differences in the success sto-ries the Conscious Dating Net-work facilitates?Yes, our members usually connect on a deeper, “soul-to-soul” level and tend to un-derstand that chemistry comes in all shapes and sizes. Our success story couples oftentimes have the feeling that they are destined to be together. Many of our “destined” couples go on to do amazing projects together, like opening retreat centers, writing books, facilitating workshops, starting intentional communities, creating nonprofi t organizations and other beautiful ventures that neither of them would have necessarily done alone. The power of two seems to be exponentially greater.

What have proved to be your all-time favorite tips for online dating success?By healing past traumas, loving and forgiv-ing ourselves, and embodying our divine presence as much as possible, deep-seated feelings of unworthiness fall away and we emanate our true radiance, thus magnetizing a partner equally empowered and awake. When we are in a place of personal power, there is no being shy or procras-tinating. When you notice a strong inner nudge to contact someone, do it. If it’s not mutual, that’s OK; don’t take it personally. That’s part of the beauty of online dating; the pool is large, and when the feeling and knowingness is mutual, you might just be starting a life together.

Joining NaturalAwakeningSingles.com in-cludes access to all members of all the Conscious Dating Network sites.
