    I CAN HEAR YOU

First o all, thanks to Te Jet or stepping in and helping out withthe last Ravings. Except that his head swelled three sizes and theadditional demands or a kibble increase, he is taking his newame all in stride.

For the past couple o weeks I have had a wax blockage inmy right ear. So I checked the Internet or a reliable methodo cleaning it, without suering permanent hearing loss. Tesuggested method was using mineral oil to soen and eventuallyget rid o the wax. Aer several days o treatment, the right earseemed a bit better but the le ear (which I didnt treat) seemedto suer rom hearing loss. While I discovered that there weresignicant benets to having impaired hearing ... such as nolonger having to pretend to ignore the Missus ... it has also beenan annoying experience, as there is occasionally, a person that I

actually want to listen to.Hating to impose on the health care system, I nally brokedown and visited the doctor. Unortunately, the wax was soimpacted that she wanted me to use the mineral oil or anotherweek to soen everything up so it could be blasted out. I will

very shortly be going back and hopeully beore I nish thiRavings, my hearing will be ully restored. Assuming that myhearing does return to normal, I need to nd a way to have thedoctor sign a note indicating that my hearing has, howeversuered a permanent change. I wont be able to hear any soundsin the lower range. Te lower range is dened as sounds thatcome rom someone ve oot tall or shorter. Hearing will workperectly or all higher ranges o sound.WOW, just got back rom the doctors oce and I CAN HEAR!!

Ooops, sorry dear ... What did you say?? Ahhh heaven!!Unortunately, the doctor was unwilling to conrm the

permanent loss o low range hearing, so I will have to continueto rely on the old stand-by selective hearing!! alent is cheaper than table salt. What separates the talentedindividual rom the successul one is a lot o hard work.- StephenKing. 800

    MUSINGSBy Debbie Hickey

    30 YEARs AND COUNINg

A ew weeks ago I realized the Hampton Herald is turning 30 inApril. Tat led to the urther realization that the Valley Viewerwill be 20 in the all. Although both magazines were already inplace when Mike and I got involved in this venture, amazingly12 o those years have been under our guidance. And to thinkit all started as a little retirement project or Helen and BertBoyd.

I have started to think about the possibility o my ownretirement, as I am now closer to sixty than y (or even y-ve!), but I keep getting stuck on what would ll my days. Terst twenty years o lie are spent learning - how to walk, how totalk, how to get along in the world, how to earn a living. Ten wespend some orty years raising amilies and working, workingand raising amilies. Busy, busy, busy. Aer the intensity o those

rst sixty years, certainly a little slow-down sounds good, but nota dead stop. Are the next thirty years perhaps an opportunity tobecome more involved in community, volunteering at charitiesand non-prots and service clubs, working to make the world(whether local or in the broader sense) a better place? Or perhapsretirement can be an opportunity to return to the learningenvironment, to pursue learning or its own sake instead oworrying whether it can get you a job/career. Universities oenhave ree tuition or those o a certain age. Maybe some part-time work?

For sure I am getting a little ahead o mysel as I anticipate atleast a couple o more years beore retiring, but one o the bigconsiderations is what will happen to Ossekeag. Who will be thenext caretaker o what Helen and Bert Boyd rst created back

in 1982? What will the next thirty years look like? And speakingo thirty . . . ime and ide wait or no man, but time alwaysstands still or a woman o thirty.~ Robert Frost. 801
