“SPRING UPDATE”Well, let’s see what is going on!! I have a couple of loads of wood that I cut over the winter, while doing some thinning, that is now all cut and split. I have also been out this spring doing a bit more thinning and patch cutting. I am going to take it easy though until we get a woodlot management plan in place, because that will help set the priorities in terms of what should be done first. For those individuals who own woodlots and want to take some proactive measures to improve the quality and quantity of wood that is growing, there are remarkably inexpensive services available by joining a local wood co-op. For those who just want to sit on their property and let mother nature do her thing, that is fine also, just consider protecting the property through land trusts or easements that will stop future owners from clear cutting what has taken many, many years to develop. Thanks to the dry spells we have had this spring, I have gotten out to do some more work on my woods road. Unfortunately, after just one heavy rain it takes about a week for it to dry out and useable again. My biggest hope, is that before winter, I will have all of the ditching done so that it should only take a fairly short time to dry out and be usable after a heavy downpour. Back in the woods, we are scouting along the roadside for desirable small trees such as spruce, pine and some cedar, and replanting them in areas that are exclusively fir and/or birch. In just a hundred or so short years, the forest makeup of trees should be significantly better. Every time I walk by my dead hemlock remains, I wonder if there is such a thing as “Tree CPR”. If there is, I suspect that the time for which it might work is long past. Oh Sigh!! Outside of the woods, we are doing a bit more landscaping and planting, but nothing major so far. The grand-grand kids are both very cute and lovable, the missus is still annoying and The Jet seems to be following in her foot steps. (Maybe more later.) On the lighter side:1. Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak2. He who laughs last, thinks the slowest.3. Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.4. Those who live by the sword get shot by those who don’t.5. Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool. 800

WAlkS ‘N TAlkS – MARTEllo ToWERA series of three free talks on the effect of the War of 1812 on Saint John will be given at Martello tower this summer by local history buff David Goss, with the first being held on Sunday, June 17th at 2:30pm. Sponsored by Parks Canada, the talk is free to the public, and will be held on the grounds of the tower which provides a panoramic view of many of the city sites that will be talked in the quest to understand what Saint John was like from 1783 to the outbreak of the war in 1812. The second talk will be held on Sunday, July 22nd and the third on Sunday, August 19th, and will further explore the war period until its end in 1815 using diaries, books, columns, and recollections from archival sources. We paddle once a week in a small lake in East Saint John from May through September. This type of exercise has been proven to increase upper body strength and mobility after breast cancer surgery and treatment in both men and women. Our boat seats 20 paddlers and we are planning “Rookie Nights” for those with no paddling experience. Life jackets and instruction will be provided. HElP NEEDED!2014 marked the 100 anniversary of the outbreak of World War I. New Brunswickers were drawn into that enormous global conflict. Many men and women (nurses) from the farms, villages, mills, towns and fishing villages of New Brunswick joined up and served in the Canadian War effort. These individuals wrote letters home and kept diaries of their extraordinary experiences. I ask for your help in preserving those memorable letters and diaries. I am hoping to gather these documents for a book I am researching. Letters and diaries would be borrowed for research and then returned to their owners. 2012 “STRIDE foR SUccESS” EvENTIt’s that time again! T4G’s Future Focus Foundation and Portage Atlantic are recruiting participants for this summer’s Stride for Success charity relay. Stride for Success is the charity portion of Saint John’s annual Run Through History: celebration of green space marathon event, and will take place this year on Sunday, July 15th. Portage Atlantic is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping Atlantic Canadian youth to find freedom from addiction. Funds raised through Stride for Success are used to develop a 3.8km trail at the Cassidy Lake youth residential treatment centre. Here, young people undergoing rehabilitation can get some exercise, breathe in the fresh air, and take some time to reflect on their difficult journey. Physical activity is an integral part the therapeutic program at Portage, and the Recovery Trail will provide a wonderful venue for biking, snowshoeing, running, and other outdoor activities in every season. People of all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to join in this event. The goal is simply to get out, have fun, and support local youth who are working hard each day to turn their lives around. Participants will also have a chance to win some great prizes. This project has received wonderful support from the community over the past two years and is nearing its goal – but it still needs your help to be successful. In order to bring this dream to fruition, Portage Atlantic and T4G are now calling on community members to lace up their sneakers and run or walk on July 15th in support of at-risk Atlantic Canadian youth. ATTENTIoN NATURE lovERS!If you have an interest in wild birds, mammals, fish, wildflowers, geology, astronomy or any other aspect of our natural world, why not consider attending a meeting of the Saint John Naturalists’ Club (SJNC) or taking part in our diverse selection of workshops and field trips? The meetings take place on the second Monday of each month at the NB Museum at Market Square beginning at 7:30pm and feature fascinating presentations. Meetings begin again in September. The annual Nature NB “Festival of Nature” will be held in the Saint John region on the weekend of June 1st-3rd. There will be more than 20 field trips with botanists, geologists and naturalists around the Fundy region focusing on everything from insects, birds and butterflies to lichens seaweeds and bog life. There will be workshops on nature photography and trips to gardens and orchards on the Kingston Peninsula, to salmon, sturgeon and marine science centers in St. George and St. Andrews and to unique waterfalls of southern NB. There will be special activities for the province’s young naturalists. Join us for: an “all purpose” nature walk in Rockwood Park on Saturday, June 16th, leaving the Lily Lake Pavilion at 8:30am; a butterfly/dragonfly outing on Saturday, July 21st and a wildflower outing on Tuesday, August 7th. MUlcH TIME AGAINMulch sales abound at this time of year and along with them the hints from most garden centers and landscape bods that the product will render your garden instantly weed free and practically work free. Be not fooled! Quite frankly, working in my garden gives me great joy and a freshly weeded bed provides a lot more satisfaction than a newly scrubbed kitchen floor ever could! Certainly the mulch has a killing effect when laid at about a three inch depth however it’s prudent to bear in mind that what can kill the undesirables can also wipe out the treasures. If your lifestyle dictates the use of mulch, care needs to be taken with the application; a space of at least six inches around the plant or bush, should be left where compost mixed with some well rotted manure can be applied, this insures that there’s enough nourishment for the plant to survive since the mulch will take a lot of nutrients from the soil as it decomposes. Mulch should always be applied after a soaking rain in order to trap the moisture in the soil. I use heavy mulch on pathways and actually recycle the large plastic bags on the surface covered with layers of newspapers and topped of with the mulch. Sadly this method is not suitable elsewhere in the garden. With advancing years the plastic bagged type is infinitely more manageable than the great truck loads that I have used in the past By not using mulch on the flower beds there is better opportunity for plants to expand and a greater likelihood of those wonderful volunteer plants, blown in by the wind or dropped from the heavens by passing aviators; they are always great fun and often provide treasures that could wreck the budget at the local nurseries. This is a great time of year to clean out ponds and care needs to be taken to preserve the wild life in them; a collection of water snails is a valuable asset to keeping things ship shape, so it’s best to lift the leaves with a small plastic rake and sit them down on the surround of the pond, giving suitable time for the livestock to return. Every pond gets overgrown with time and the plant life needs to be reduced to a point where at least 1/3 of the pond is open water. I have just completed that task in a very small pond and was rewarded with the sight of a pair of mallard ducks taking stock of the accommodations! So much good stuff in life is free and it seems to me that the major benefits of hands on gardening are the pure joy of hearing the birds sing and watching plant life come into bloom. One in three people will be diagnosed with cancer, so in all likelihood, we all know someone affected by this disease. As the Luminaries chair for the Relay for Life, I am thankful to be here to help to with this year’s Relay for Life - I am a survivor, and I hope you will join me in this fight! The Relay for Life is an opportunity for all of us to celebrate cancer survivors, remember and honour loved ones lost to cancer and fight back against all cancers. Please consider getting your group involved. The SJ-KV Relay for Life will be held on June 9th from 7:00pm-7:00am at Rothesay High School. Anyone can help by: participating as a team, selling luminaries, sponsoring the event, donating products and services or volunteering. Luminaries are candles that are placed in special bags that bear the names of cancer survivors and loved ones who have lost their battle with cancer. You can dedicate luminaries to remember and honour your loved ones. Luminaries can be purchased at Rothesay High School on June 9th or online prior to the event. Even if you are unable to attend the event, you can still purchase luminaries to pay tribute to your family members and friends who have experienced cancer. At each Relay for Life event, the luminaries are lit during a moving ceremony at dusk. Your luminary and its message will provide light and inspiration for the participants all night long as they walk around the track. The proceeds raised from this event helps fund leading-edge cancer research that is improving cancer treatments, preventing cancer and saving lives; provide vital and up-to-date information on cancer, risk reduction and treatment; offer vital community-based support services for people living with cancer and their families. SEA BEllES HoST coNvENTIoN & coNTESTSea Belles Chorus is hosting Harmony, Inc.’s annual Area Convention & Contest in Saint John from May 31st-June 3rd. Six choruses and 10 quartets from the Maritime Provinces will compete for the opportunity to represent our area at the International Competitions in Orlando, Florida in November. Competitions will be held at the Samuel de Champlain Community Centre on Boar’s Head Road on June 1st. The Quartet contest will commence at 12:30pm and the Chorus contest at 8:00pm. WHy RElAy IS ovERNIGHT?“Cancer does not stop for nighttime.” Relay For Life starts at dusk and ends at the next day’s morning. The light and darkness of the day and night parallel the physical effects, emotions, and mental state of a cancer patient while undergoing treatment. The Relay begins when the sun is setting. This symbolizes the time that the person has been diagnosed as having cancer. The day is getting darker and this represents the cancer patient’s state of mind as they feel that their life is coming to an end. As the evening goes on it gets colder and darker, just as the emotions of the cancer patient do. Around 1:00 to 2:00am represents the time when the cancer patients start treatments. They become exhausted, some sick, not wanting to go on, possibly wanting to give up. As a participant, you have been walking and feel much the same way. You are tired, want to sleep, maybe even want to go home, but you cannot. You cannot stop or give up, just as the cancer patient cannot stop or give up. Around 4:00 to 5:00am symbolizes the coming of the end of treatment for the cancer patient. Once again they are tired, but they know they will make it. The sun rising represents the end of treatment for the cancer patient. They see the light and know that life will go on. The morning light brings on a new day full of life and excitement for new beginnings for the cancer patient. As a participant, you will feel the brightness of the morning and know that the end of the Relay is close at hand. When you leave the Relay, think of the cancer patient leaving their last treatment. Just as you are exhausted and weak, so is that person after treatment. But there is hope in the new day! The money raised at Relay will support patient services, lifesaving research, prevention education, and advocacy efforts … and that is why we Relay! JoB fEST GRAND PRIzE WINNERSchool Districts 6, 8 and 10 are proud to announce the winner of the April 2nd Job Fest Grand Prize. Amy Reid, a student at Sussex Regional High School, was the lucky recipient of an IPad. This prize was made available through the generosity and support of Job Fest partner, Innovatia. Job Fest is a virtual fair, held annually, which allows students to learn about direct to work and post secondary education opportunities. The event is a joint venture between the districts and Post Secondary Education, Training and Labour. This year Job Fest saw over 2500 grade 11 students from across the southern region participate by visiting an interactive virtual exhibition hall. In addition many students were involved in live mock interviews. Job Fest is one more way for the districts to help prepare our young adults for a bright future in the world of work. 839

E NEWSWe recently sent out our very first e-newsletter. This is something we have talked about for some time and although the first issue was quite time consuming the response has been positive, with several of our customers even taking the time to email us to tell us so. It is our hope that our advertising customers will find it a useful resource full of all kinds of tips and information, much as we hope these community magazines provide our readers with a whole community of interesting and useful news and events. I sometimes think of just 12 years ago when Mike and I first began Ossekeag Publishing. We took on an office with just three computers, two for creating the publications and one which was hooked up the internet. Most of our editorial came in as hard copy and had to be typed. Ad copy was a hand drawn sketch or occasionally (from companies with a national presence) an “ad mat” that could be scanned. Very little came to us via email. My six year old grand-daughter is always fascinated by how little connection to the bigger world Nana and Grumpy had as kids. I was her age when our family got our first television, with all of one channel and a GREAT test pattern for large parts of the 24-hour day. Interestingly, though, yesterday we watched some of those same cartoons that I saw as a kid . . . thanks to YouTube. Tom & Jerry and Sylvester & Tweety were both big hits. She laughed . . . and then went back a bit to rewatch the funniest section again. Not only was that impossible when I saw them, I also watched them in black and white, a concept completely foreign to her. She is amazed that there was no Dora, no Treehouse and no Barbie.
