RAVINGSBy Mike Hickey

“HeAlHY”

I am willing to bet that there are just great big bunches o youreaders who have made some kind o New Year’s resolutiontowards being healthier. Whether it is losing weight, exercisingmore, eating healthier or a combination o these, I am sure thatthese issues have been on many people’s minds as we thoughtabout the year to come. In act with rising obesity and theincreased cost to health care to treat all o the related healthissues that arise rom unhealthy weight, it is time to take seriousaction.

Your body mass index (BMI) is a measure o body at basedon height and weight that applies to adult men and women. It isgenerally considered that a BMI o 25 and over is indicative obeing overweight and a BMI o 30 and over is obese. During theChristmas period, due to generous gis o chocolates, cookies

alcohol and other goodies, I went rom a BMI o under 25 upinto the denitely pudgy range. Since serious action is needed tocurb our pudgy population, I offi cially propose that “All citizenswho give high calorie goodies to us innocent residents acingweight issues ... be lined up and shot!!!!!!!”A bit extreme ... maybe?? With New Brunswick, already ghting

a population issue, wiping out tens o thousands o residents isprobably not a great idea, but I bet it would certainly help outhe unemployment rate.

Perhaps legislation that mandates that ALL gis o ood muscontain at least 95% broccoli or zucchini!! Or, how about, liquorstores that must check your BMI beore allowing a sale!! “SorryBuddy, but drop 10 pounds and you can get your case o beernext time.”

Or maybe you could do what the missus and I did and pickup one o the new video games thatallow players to jump, bend, andotherwise get a airly decent workoutduring days and nights o bitter coldor otherwise inclement weather!!

Whatever you decide to do, Icertainly wish you success incarrying out your healthy agenda orthe coming year. 800

RARelY seeN iN NBI thought your readers might enjoy seeing a ew pictures o ararely seen New Brunswick animal. Back in September I wasortunate to have seen a Fisher in the woods directly behind myhome here in Quispamsis. I was standing still when I caughtsome movement and all o a sudden a Fisher popped overa little knoll just ten meters away. I was very surprised andequally surprised as to the size o this animal. With its long taiit would have been three eet long. As a result o this encounterI purchased a trail camera and set it up in the woods along withsome bait.

For those readers who do not know what a trail camera isit is a motion activated ditgital camera set to take pictures oanimals as they move in ront o the camera. Over the nexcouple o weeks I captured numerous pictures o raccoons andeven a coyote but it took several weeks beore I got pictures othe Fisher. I now have hundreds o pictures as the Fisher gotused to my ree meals..

Tey are pretty common in the Province trappers can catchthem legally and there is no limit, they are just rarely seen. Teodd part is that it’s living in Quispam they usually preer oldgrowth remote orests. Teir avorite ood is porcupine oneo the ew animals that can prey on them because they know

how to kill them and the quills don’t cause them grie. Are yourneighbors missing any cats or small dogs? Tey like squirrelsand mice too but will take anything smaller than they are.

HAPPY NeW YeAR

Except, what year is this? I know it’s 2012 . . . but how did you  just say that. Did you say twenty twelve, or did you say twothousand twelve? I had this dilemma last year as well and neverdid satisactorily come to a conclusion as to the “better” way to say it. On New Year’s Day I was listening to CBC Radio andheard exclusively “twenty twelve”. Ah, CBC has decreed that tobe the “correct” pronunciation. Until the next day when I heardanother CBC host using two thousand twelve . . . I am goingwith “twenty twelve” regardless, aer all it wasn’t one thousandnineteen hundred and twelve. It has thus ar been an open mild start to the winter so I have not

seen as many birds at the eeders o my back deck as I normally do. Te cats have been very disappointed! I am still goingthrough the bird ood at a very rapid pace however. Hmmm .

. . that mild open winter part likely has something to do withthat. So when the back yard light went on at 3:00am the othernight, I was out o bed in a fash to see what was happening. As Isuspected, raccoons! No wonder the bird ood was disappearing.I grabbed my robe and headed or the back deck. Where are my

moccasins/slippers? Oh yes, le them behind at my daughter’s(along with the novel I was hal-way through but that’s anotherstory). No matter, those raccoons are not getting another mealat my expense. Out I go on the deck in bare eet. Now this may well have been a relatively mild winter to date, but not thatnight! It was well below reezing and although the deck is woodit was snappin’ cold on the toes! Tree raccoons took o in ahurry with a stick o stove wood encouraging them along! Telargest, aka Big Mama, was hissing and snarling all the way. It

has been two nights since the great rout and so ar no sign thatthey have returned. I am sure this is not the end o the war, only the rst skirmish, unless it stays cold enough or them to den uptil spring. But I do need to get my moccasins back. Brrrr . . .801
