HULL UNIVERSITY FORMULA STUDENT TEAM PUBLICATION 1ST MARCH 2012 A Message from Jerome Greenhalgh, Team Principal It is only in writing this section of the Newsletter that I am able to perceive exactly how much the team achieves every month. Although all the team members communicate their actions and I am involved in many of the decisions that are made it is always very satisfying to see that all the hard work does pay off. Naturally the support we get from our sponsors, members of the Engineering department and other interested parties all go a long way to helping the team move forward in our endeavours. The big news this month is that several of the main components of the car have arrived with the Engine being delivered in the second week of February giving the team a very good idea of the exact size of the engine and the work that remained to be done. Our event on the 8th of February gave the team the opportunity to unveil the chassis that would be used as the foundations of the car, this is down to one of our Silver Sponsors: EdwinSnowdens & Co. With many more components on order and arriving on a regular basis all that remains is taking these ingredients and ensuring that they all work together to give the team a car to race in July. To give all that have been involved a chance to see the car first hand the team plan to unveil the car on the 22nd of March at an event held at the University. Details are to follow in the next few days so please contact the team if you would be interested in attending. Finally the team have secured the support of two more sponsors, Gassco AS and Creative Graphics International, whose support is much appreciated and goes to show the value of the teams activities as perceived from outside the University. Thank you for your continued support and interest in the team’s activities, I hope you enjoy reading up on the team’s endeavours this month. A Message from Jerome Greenhalgh, Team Principal

It   is  only   in  writing  this  section  of  the  Newsletter  that   I  am  able  to  perceive  exactly   how  much  the  team  achieves  every  month.  Although  all  the  team  members  communicate  their   actions  and  I  am  involved   in  many

of   the  decisions  that  are  made  it   is  always  very   satisfying  to  see  that  all  the  hard  work  does  pay  off.

Our  event  on  the  8th  of  February   gave  the  team   the  opportunity   to   unveil  the  chassis  that  would  be  used  as  the  foundations  of  the  car,   this  is  down  to  one  of   our   Silver   Sponsors:   Edwin-‐Snowdens   &   Co.

Sponsor NewsChassis Returned! This   month   was   a   very  significant  one  for  the  team  as  the  first   ever  chassis  that  had  b e e n   d e s i g n e d   a t   t h e  university   was  delivered   back  to  the  University.     T h e   c h a s s i s   w a s  welded  at  Edwin-‐Snowdens  &  Co,   who   specialise   in   the  manufacture   of   Pressure  v e s s e l s ,   b y   3 r d   y e a r  appren]ce   welder   James  Brown.   The   ini]al   prepara]on  of  the  material  had  be  carried  out   by   team  members  at   the  University  before  sending  it  to  be   welded   together.   The  support  that  Edwin-‐Snowdens  &  Co  have  given  has  not  only  resulted  in  them  being  able  to  support  the  undergraduates  in  the  team  but  also  use  Formula  Student  to  develop  other  aspiring  engineers  such  as  James  by   giving  him  valuable  experience.  A  big  thank  you  goes  out   to  the  staff  at   Edwin-‐Snowden  &  Co  for  their  support  and  their  hard  work.

Gassco AS: A Golden Contribution. The  team  are  delighted  to  announce  the  final  Gold   sponsor   to   become   involved   with   the  team;   Gassco   AS,   based   in  Easington  on   the  East   cost   of   the  UK   and   forming  part   of   the  large  Norwegian  Firm  Gassco.  The  Easington  site  received  16.2  Billion  Cubic  Metres  of  Norwegian  gas  in  2009,   just   over   65%   of   all  the  Norwegian   Gas  delivered   to   the  UK.   The   team   are   delighted   to  welcome  this  large  and  pres]gious  organisa]on  on  board  and  their   involvement  demonstrates  the  value  that  is  placed  on  the  Formula  Student  compe]]on  by  engineering  firms.  Their  support  will  go  a  long  way  into  helping  the  team  achieve  their  aims  at  the  compe]]on  later  on  in  the  year.

Creative Graphics International: A Silver SponsorThe  team  are  also  very   proud  to  welcome  a  world  leader   in  specialised  branding  solu]ons;  Crea]ve  Graphics  Interna]onal.   The  support  offered  will  help  make  the  Hull  Challenger   a  very   aesthe]cally   pleasing   car   but   will  also  promote  all  of   our   sponsors  in  the  manner  in  which  they  deserve  and  have  come  to  expect.  The  team  look  forward  to  working  with  CGI  Visual  to  produce  the  sponsor  decals  to  be  added  to  the  body  work  of  the  car.

The Development of the HU-ChallengerOver  the  last  month  we  have  made  a  big  push  to  buy  all  the  remaining  components  we  needed  for  the  car.  Here  is  a  breakdown  of  some  of  the  new  components  that  have  arrived.

A   big   stepping   stone   has   been  and  gone  with  the  arrival  of  the  fully   welded   chassis.   We   can  now       begin       agaching  components  as  our  next   goal  is  to     have     a     rolling     chassis  complete  by   the  end  of  March.  Thanks  again  to  Edwin-‐Snowden  &  Co.  for  their  support.

O u r   wh e e l s  have   arrived.  These  are  from  a   Ford   Escort  Ral ly   car   so  already   have  a  bit   of   racing  e x p e r i e n c e .

They   are  made  from  magnesium   so  are  nice  and  light  for   their   size  reducing  the  unsprung   weight   of   each   corner   of   the  car.

As  more   components   are   bought   CAD   renders  are  created  to  give  the  team  an  idea  of  what  the  a s s emb l i e s  will   look   like,  such   as   the  front   wheel  a s s e m b l y  (shown)   with  hub,   upright,    b r a k e   d i s k  and  caliper.

An  ajer  market  exhaust  system  to  help  get  as  much  torque  out  of  the  engine  as  possible.   Arrived  on  the  25th  of  February,  and  will  soon  be  mounted  to  the  engine.

J e rome   and   B r i an  posing  with  the  engine  in   a   photo-‐shoot   for  the   University   News.  The   engine   we   are  using   is  a  stock  Honda  CBR  600RR   from   2005.  Supplied   to   us   by   AB  P e r f o rman c e ,   o u r  technical  partner.

At  the  ]me  of  going  to  press  the  team  were  hotly  an]cipa]ng  the  arrival  of  the  body  panels

manufactured  by  Linecross  using  moulds  (shown)  manufactured  by  Progressive  CNC.

Our   new   chain   drive   differen]al,  spare  sprocket,  tripod  housings  with  Brake  disk  mounts  and   special  bolt  set   are  now   complete  and  on  their  way   to   us .   Many   thanks   to  Westgarage   Engineering   for   their  quick  turnaround  ]me.

In  addi]on  to  the  new  parts  that   are  arriving  for   the   car   we  are  also   constantly   striving   to  update   and   improve   the   designs   for   the  components  we  are  manufacturing   in   house.  Using  the  wheel  it  has  been  possible  to  model  the  exact   space  available  for   the  brakes,   hubs  and   uprights   allowing   for   the   suspension  geometries   to   be   worked   on.   This   has   also  allowed   for   the   exact   placement   of   the  differen]al   and   finalisa]on   of   our   backplate  design   so  that   it   can  be  manufactured  on  the

University’s  CNC  machine.

Above:  The  new  wheels  modeled  in  Solid  Works  2011  with  the

hub  designs  (not  shown).

As   a   team   we   are   also   growing   more   and  more   confident   with   the   addi]on   of   more  defined  roles,  meaning  we  know  who  is  doing  what  and  when.  This  is  allowing   us  to  cover  more  things  in  depth  and  explore  all  parts  of  the   car   at   every   mee]ng.   The   weekly  mee]ngs  (shown)   allow   the  team  members  to  bring  all  their  ideas  and  informa]on  to  the  table.

Events…The  Team  has  been  busy  once  again  in  terms  of  Events.  On  the  8th  February  we  unveiled  the

chassis  and  our  engine  during  a  presenta]on  by  the  Team  Principal  as  well  as  a  guest  speaker,  John  Adams,  who  shared  his  experiences  from  when  he  took  part  in  the  compe]]on  a  couple  of  years  ago  and  how  this  helped  him  in  his  professional  life  ajer  University.   It’s  not  all  work  and  no  play  this  month  as  the  team  went  Go-‐Kar]ng  on  the  29th  of  February.  It  was  chance  for   the  team  to  bond  as  well  as  pick  out   any  hidden  talent   anyone  has  behind  the  wheel.

The  next  event  that  the  team  will  be  holding  will  be  on  the  22nd  of  March  where  the  rolling  chassis  will  be  unveiled.  This  will  be  an  ideal  opportunity  to  see  the  shape  of  the  car  and  what  it  will  look  like  at  the  compe]]on.  This  will  also  be  an  opportunity  to  meet  the  team  members  and  gain  an  understanding  of  the  different  tasks  that  have  been  undertaken  by  the  individuals  that  make  up  the  team.  More  details  to  follow.
