North Star Academy Named Nominee for National Blue Ribbon Schools ProgramState Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson has selected North Star Academy, a 3rd through 8th grade school in the Redwood City School District, to be one of just 35 schools in California to be nominated for the prestigious 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools Program This program recognizes schools exhibit-ing student achievement at the highest levels or that have made exemplary progress toward bridging the achievement gap North Star serves 540 students and was designated a California Distinguished School in 2010 Its curricula and enrichment offerings are designed to meet the unique needs of students identified as gifted and high achieving through specific instruction-al strategies In the 2010-11 school year, the school earned an API (Academic Per-formance Index) score of 992 (out of a pos-sible 1,000) making it the highest-perform-ing school in San Ma-teo CountyTo be eligible for the Blue Ribbon nomi-nation, schools must meet or exceed the 85th percentile on statewide tests or number among the top 10 percent of schools serving a socioeco-nomically disadvan-taged student body showing consistent improvement over the past five years. “These schools all share a deep commit-ment to the education and well-being of their students,” said Torlakson, in a statement “We’ve recognized them on the state level, and now I hope their outstanding work and remarkable prog-ress will be further spotlighted nationally”Contingent upon its students meeting all prescribed targets on the 2012 statewide standardized tests, and also meeting or exceeding its target overall Academic Perfor-mance Index (API), North Star will be eligible to receive the coveted distinction in September of this year “We are thrilled that North Star has been recognized by Superintendent Torlakson and are so proud of everything our students and staff have accomplished through hard work and collaboration,” said Superintendent Jan Christensen
