FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

In Luton, England, there is a network called Grassroots. It is a Christian group, supported by local churches and by national church organizations. Luton is a post-industrial town just under an hour north of London. It is an extremely mixed community, and there has been a particular focus on the different faith groups represented there.

Living in such a mixed community, with Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus and many others, Christians face a choice – to be a closed community or to be open to dialogue and to discussion, to get to know people of other faiths and to begin to understand each other. Grassroots has chosen the latter course, and actively supports youth groups, women’s groups and so on who chose to cooperate and join together with groups from other faiths. For example, a youth group from the local Methodist church has been paintballing and cycling with a Muslim youth group. With Grassroots’ support, the groups that have chosen to do things together have found that in meeting each other openly they see that they have many things in common. They share interests, and they share values.

We hear so much news, in today’s world about conflict and division, often between people of different faiths or cultures. Yet we all share a common humanity; and what Grassroots has found is that Christians who feel confident in their faith can engage fully and without fear with people of other faiths, and that those of other faiths can be equally welcoming.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus prepares his disciples for a different way of life, one where he is no longer physically present with them. He reminds them of his love for them, and teaches that they need to respond to that love and to express it, so that others may know that they are disciples of Jesus. He is trying to help them to work out what it means to be a disciple.

As we hear throughout the Acts of the Apostles, the early disciples constantly had to face misunderstanding and even hostility. They faced crises – and they had to make major decisions about their identity as the Church. How open should they be? Should they close in on themselves so as to preserve what they believed in, and keep it safe? Or should they spread the Good News freely, and accept those who would not traditionally have been accepted as part of their community? How should they interact with other communities?

Jesus told them that they were to learn from him. What sort of love had Jesus shown in his life and ministry?

Jesus’ love was not exclusive. It was not focused only on those who seemed to be “good”. In fact, his love reached out even more to those who were excluded, to those who were treated as “unclean” because they had not kept to the rules. St. Paul, too, knew that God’s love could not be contained and restricted. God reaches out to everyone. God’s love is wide enough and deep enough to include everyone, whoever they may be.

Like the first disciples, we too are followers of Christ, and Christ calls us, as he called them, to be witnesses of his love for all. What does this mean for the Christian community today?

We are called to decide, like St. Paul and St. Peter early on in the Church’s life, what sort of community we should be: should we be restricted and closed, in order to protect ourselves and our faith; or should we be open, compassionate and welcoming? The early Church chose to reach out to others. It faced difficulties, challenges and threats. It faced violence and hostility. But even when they met opposition and persecution, the members of those early communities continued to welcome and to reach out to others in love.

Many people today are afraid of those who are different from them – and this fear limits them. But if we are confident in God’s love and choose to follow Christ’s example, we can overcome our fear. Fear hampers true enjoyment of life; it stops us doing things. We cannot flourish in a state of fear – if instead of seeing possibilities we see only threats, instead of hopes and dreams we worry ourselves into nightmares. The early disciples must have been afraid at times too, but their faith was so strong that they faced their challenges with confidence. Through prayer, through reflection and through meaningful conversation with others, we too can face our own challenges with confidence and trust in God.

Easter Peace and Confidence,

3RD GRADE BIOGRAPHIES

Jane Goodall, Paul McCartney, Anne Frank, and Jackie Robinson were a few of the several people included in the 3rd graders' biography presentations. After reading a biography of their chosen famous person, the students prepared written reports which they orally presented to their classmates and parents.

Each month in 3rd grade, our students complete book reports. Biographies are included because like books, every life has a beginning, middle, and an end, and the lessons learned along the way are of great interest to those who are still at the beginning.

KINDERGARTEN FIELD TRIP

Our Kindergarteners attended their end of the year field trip to the La Grange library. The theme of the trip was "Friendship". They enjoyed singing songs together, reading stories about friendship, making friend-shapes, going on a tour of the new library and sharing a smiley treat together!

FIRST COMMUNION AND MAY CROWNING

Congratulations to our school and religious education second graders who celebrated their first communion last weekend. Monday the school second graders joined the eighth graders for our May Crowning Mass. The annual May Crowning Mass at St. Cletus Parish is a wonderful tradition that highlights our 2nd Grade First Communicants and our Eighth Graders who are looking forward to their graduation.

FOOD PANTRY UPDATES

We had a great group from the Senior Class at Nazareth Academy who volunteered in their Circle the City Day of Service by helping at our food pantry distribution. Thank you!

Grants Awarded to the Food Pantry!

This year we applied for, and received, two large grants to help us in our food pantry transition. First, was the Catholic Relief Services-Rice Bowl Grant. We were awarded $1,500 to purchase shelving, as well as an ipad, keyboard, and case for our new intake system.

We were also awarded $10,000 from the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) Capacity Building Agency Grant Program! These funds were used to purchase two commercial size refrigerators and two freezers, six shelving units, and funds allocated to our GCFD account to purchase refrigerated/frozen items such as milk, meat, eggs, etc.

In addition to the GCFD grant, we were also given two ipads and keyboards from GCFD to transition our clients to the online registration system, Food Bank Manager. This donation is worth $1,500.

We’re so grateful for the generous support of these organizations; as well as the ongoing support of our donors. Thank you for making this work possible! Facebook

WORD OF LIFE

“Patients need to be able to trust their doctors to always care for their lives and never deliberately cause death… Patients facing serious illness may feel hopeless and depressed, as though their lives have lost meaning. Addressing psychological, emotional, and spiritual problems is essential to palliative care. Assisted suicide alleviates none of these problems, but gives in to them.”

MISSIONARIES OF MERCY

Paul’s back! After last week’s “violent abuse,” opponents organized a lynch mob that beat Paul nearly to death. But call Paul the “energizing evangelist,” transforming deadly cruelty into life-giving zeal. Paul’s past courage should inspire our commitment; Revelation’s future “new heaven, new earth” should inspire our optimism. But Revelation’s present assurance, “Behold, God’s dwelling is with the human race,” should challenge us to become “missionaries of mercy.” Because Pope Francis declared that the Church’s credibility is completely dependent on our showing unconditional mercy. Mercy, said Francis, makes the Church, the world, and everyone young again, reawakened to life’s noblest virtues. Fittingly, in today’s Gospel Jesus reinforces that theme: “This is how all will know you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — Paul and Barnabas reported how God had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles (Acts 14:21-27). Psalm — I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God (Psalm 145). Second Reading — God’s dwelling is with the human race (Revelation 21:1-5a). Gospel — This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another (John 13:31-33a, 34-35). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Frequent fliers today have many ways to accrue air miles, so one doesn’t always have to endure long hours in cramped seats to earn free hours in cramped seats. In St. Paul’s day, there were no such perks, nor would there have been any legal system for him to protest the shipwrecks he endured. He had other rewards in mind. The churches that he established in the catalogue of cities from today’s first reading must have been very different from one another. Language, culture, customs, religious history, obstacles to community, social challenges, the places where they met, their clothing, their bread and wine, all distinct, particular to the area.

There were social customs as well: in a Christian household, the only place where a slave would be able to stand legally as an equal with the master would be at the table of the Lord, because at that table a new world of reconciliation was imaged. While Paul revered local customs, he was relentless about challenging the ways that people lived their Christian lives and how their worship reflected them. It is much the same today, as a global Catholic Church seeks to respect local customs and culture, allowing for differences in many things, yet always giving expression to the underlying presence of Christ, who binds us all together into his body. —James Field, Copyright © J. PRAY THE ROSARY WITH MARY SUNDAY

Come pray the Rosary this Sunday, May 19th, at 12:10 in Room 98 of the school building. The Living Rosary will be hosting this moving way to walk with Mary and Jesus through the events of their earthly lives. Stay as long as you choose. Other opportunities to say the

Rosary as a group are at 7:20 in the morning before the 8 am Mass in church or at 12:15 on Sundays in the Children's Room. However you choose to say the Rosary, Mary is always listening. Many, many thanks to everyone who stopped by the Rosary table last weekend. It is so amazing to see how present Mary is in the life of our parish and how she comforts those who are open to her love. If you want to join the Living Rosary, call Mary Lu at 579-3987 for more information.

THANK YOU FROM SOLES4SOULS

Hi Deacon Stuart,

Once again you knocked it out of the park. Sue and I would like to thank you for all your help as the collection total was 1313 pairs of shoes. We would also like to thank Pastor Clark for allowing the drive to happen.

So many were a part of the success. Including those who helped carry the shoes out of the Church, those who promoted the drive and most of all the good people of St. Cletus who showed how much they cared.

1313 pairs of shoes will help many in need and your parish community should be proud of all they did.

With great appreciation, Al and Sue Cimaglia - Soles4Souls

ST. CLETUS COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC WOMEN

Save the Date: Saturday, June 22nd - Women's Spiritual Retreat at St. Cletus!

SAINT JOHN'S ABBEY TODAY'S REFLECTION

Occasionally some event like the death of a fellow student, or something we've read, will hit students with the need to value the present a bit more. For most, it lasts only a few days. Then it's back to: "When is spring going to come?" "I'm just coasting." "Next summer we're all meeting at Lucy's cabin on the Fourth." "I can't wait till the weekend." "Next fall we'll be living in an apartment." And then there are some who think that living in the present is a kind of thoughtless and hedonistic prescription to get all you can now of pleasure and satisfaction. That is a possible approach.

But living 'now' can and should mean valuing our time, our opportunities, our friends, not putting off living in such a way that we never live. Not taking for granted the people we live with or see all the time. But, it must be admitted, the future keeps breaking in. We do need the stimulation of the future. Balancing the future and the present is everyone's task. All the good times, all the great people, all the wonderful opportunities are not in the future. There is so much now that we should embrace and cherish while it is what it is. Parents learn this when they have little children. Instead of worrying about their futures constantly (I suppose you have to allow some of that) they usually realize they should prize their children's energy and enthusiasm, watching with amazement as they grow right before their eyes. — Don Talafous OSB http://www.saintjohnsabbey.org/
