Christian Movie Coming March 23
Movie theaters will begin showing the movie
Paul, Apostle of Christ on March 23, which is
Palm Sunday weekend.
According to the film’s site: “Two men struggle
against a determined emperor and the frailties
of the human spirit in order to live out the
Gospel of Jesus Christ and spread their message
to the world.”
Romero Expected to Be Named a Saint This Fall
Oscar Romero, for whom our chapel is named, is
expected to be canonized in October. Pope
Francis recently advanced the causes of several
people on the path to sainthood, including
Romero, who was shot while celebrating Mass in
El Salvador in 1980. Our parish takes its name
from those who were martyred in El Salvador.
FORGIVEN: Our Lenten SG Series Theme Our final Lenten Small Group gatherings will take place this week. All are encouraged to attend Holy Week services next week to prepare our hearts for the Triduum and Easter. Small Groups will resume the week of April 8 with a 4-week Spring Series. Those who joined “JUST FOR LENT” are invited and encouraged to continue with the Spring Series, which will end the week of April 29. Then, we are “off” until Fall, when Small Groups will resume.
“Be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ.”

Journeying Through Lent
The following are traditional Lenten disciplines:
Fasting & Abstinence: Catholics of age 14 and
older abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good
Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. In addition, on Ash
Wednesday and Good Fridays, Catholics from age 18-
59 fast, limiting themselves to one full meal and two
smaller meals each day.
Prayer: Catholics are encouraged to pray more
during Lent, especially with Scripture. Lent is also an
ideal time to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation
in preparation for the celebration of Christ’s Passion,
Death and Resurrection.
Almsgiving: Moved by the sacrifice of Christ, many
Christians combine almsgiving with fasting, giving to
the poor the money they saved by eating, drinking or
buying less as they rely more upon God’s
abundant grace.
Lent is a special time
in our liturgical year
and we would like to encourage all
parishioners to enter into this sacred time
with a sense of prayerfulness. To keep
this time as sacred, all parish committees
and groups might want to consider
minimizing business meetings as much as
possible to keep the focus and energy on
our Lenten opportunities.

sister parish.
The goal of our efforts is to build communities and
reduce poverty in El Salvador through education.

There’s Still Time to Make the Most of Lent
It’s the fifth Sunday of Lent. If you haven’t done anything for Lent yet,
it’s not too late. Jesus is always waiting to hear from you. Spend some
quiet time with Him. A good place to start is to invite the Holy Spirit
into your life.
Come Holy Spirit, Fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in us the
fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and we shall be created, and
You shall renew the face of the earth. Amen.
Latina Project Provides Warm, Welcoming Environment
The Latina Project, an outreach by the women of Holy Martyrs and our sister parish, La Sagrada Familia,
provides a meal once a month during a support meeting for women who are survivors of domestic violence.
At the February meal, Holy Martyrs parishioners arrived, set up and had a few minutes to relax and continue
to get to know each other before the women came in for supper. They were able to greet the women and
carry soup and drinks for the children. The atmosphere was warm, secure and welcoming. One woman
noted that many of the children were older than expected, “but they were all engaged with us or playing
card games or doing homework.”
You can help by providing part of a light meal, spending time with the women or babysitting during their
meeting. The next meeting is March 19. An invitation to help was emailed to parishioners. Food needs to be
dropped off at Holy Martyrs Sunday through 3 p.m. Monday before each meeting. Please contact Diane Bruce
at [email protected] if you would like to help.
Rice Bowl Collection, Stations This Week
Students should bring their rice bowls to class on
March 19 and 20, the last classes before Easter.
We’ll have a special prayer service for presenting
the rice bowls prior to the sixth graders’ Living
Stations of the Cross, which have been moved to
those same nights.
The Importance of Palms
HMKids students in grades 1, 2 and 3 learned this
year how palms are burned to make ashes for Ash
Wednesday. Time Travelers are learning about the
role palms played in Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem.
Time Travelers will process to their session with
palms on Palm Sunday (March 25) at the start of
the Liturgy of the Word at the 9:30 a.m. Mass.
Learning to Offer Mass Intentions
HMKids students are learning about offering a Mass for
an intention, most often someone who has died. Have
you ever wondered why we do this?
When the priest recalls Jesus’ sacrifice during Mass, he is
offering that sacrifice to give special graces for the
deceased person named in the intention.
Pope Leo XIII explained it this way: "The grace of mutual
love among the living, strengthened and increased by the
sacrament of the Eucharist, flows, especially by virtue of
the Sacrifice [of the Mass], to all who belong to the
communion of saints. For the communion of saints is
simply ... the mutual sharing of help, atonement, prayers
and benefits among the faithful, those already in the
heavenly fatherland, those consigned to the purifying
fire, and those still making their pilgrim way
here on earth.”
