Mary, a health officer from America, came to live in Ethiopia to work at the health center.

አሜሪካዊቷ የጤና መኮንን ሜሪ በጤና ጣብያ ዉስጥ ለመስራት ወደ ኢትዮጵያ መጣች፡፡

Most mornings Mary takes a Bajaj from her house to the health center. But on market day it is too busy, so Mary often walks.

ብዙ ጊዜ ጠዋት ጠዋት ከቤት ወደ ጤና ጣብያ ለመሄድ ሜሪ ባጃጅ ትጠቀማለች ነገር ግን በገበያ ቀን መንገዱ ስለሚጨናነቅ ሜሪ በእግሯ ትጓዛለች፡፡

One market day Mary was walking to the health center and a young girl, about ten years old, introduced herself to Mary.

አንድ የገበያ ቀን ሜሪ ወደ ጤና ጣብያ እየሄደች እያለ አንድ ዕድሜዋ አስር ዓመት የሚሆን ልጅ ሜሪንተዋወቀቻት::

“Hello, my name is Tigist,” she said while reaching out her right hand. Mary replied, “Hello Tigist, my name is Mary,” and shook Tigist’s hand.

“ ” “ ጤና ይስጥልኝ ትዕግስት እባላለሁ በማለት ቀኝ እጇን ዘርግታ ራሷን አስተዋወቀች፡፡ሜሪም ጤና ” ይስጥልኝ ትዕግስት ሜሪ እባላለሁ በማለት ተዋወቀቻት፡፡

Tigist told Mary that she was walking to her school which was near the health center, she then asked Mary if they could walk together.

Mary liked Tigist, so she said yes.

ትግስት ወደ ትምህርት ቤት እየሄደች እንደሆነ ለሜሪ ነገረቻት። ፤ትምህርት ቤቱ የሚገኘው ከጤና ጣቢያው አጠገብ ስለሆነ አብረዉ መሄድ ይችሉ እንደሆነም ሜሪን ጠየቀቻት፡፡ ሜሪ ትዕግስትን

ስለወደደቻት እሺ አለቻት፡

During their walk, Mary and Tigist enjoyed conversations about school, family and the weather.

Mary said to Tigist, “You are a nice girl, you must have many friends.”

እየተጓዙ ሜሪና ትዕግስት ስለ ትምህርት፣ ቤተሰብ እንዲሁም የአየር ሁኔታ ደስ የሚል ውይይትአደረጉ፡፡

“ ” ሜሪም ለትዕግስትን አንቺ በጣም ጥሩ ልጅ ነሽ፤ መቼም ብዙ ጓደኞች አሉሽ አለቻት

Tigist explained, “Mary, I do not have friends. I have HIV and the kids at school are afraid of HIV, so they do not play with me.”

Since Mary is a health officer she knows that HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. These three big words mean that Tigist has an infection in her body that sometimes makes her weak. Mary also knows that children should not be afraid of Tigist.

“ ትዕግስትም ሜሪ እኔ ምንም ጓደኞች የለኝም፤ ኤች አይ ቪ በደሜ ዉስጥ ስላለ እና ” በትምህርት ቤቴ ያሉ ልጆች ደግሞ ኤች አይ ቪ በጣም ስለሚፈሩ ከእኔ ጋር አይጫወቱም

ብላ አስረዳቻት፡፡

ሜሪ የጤና መኮንን ስለሆነች ኤች አይ ቪ ማለት የሰዉን የመከላከል አቅም የሚያዳክም ቫይረስ መሆኑን ታዉቃለች፡፡ይሄ ማለት ትዕግስት በሰዉነቷ ዉስጥ እሷን የሚያዳክም ቫይረስ

አለ ማለት ነዉ፤ በተጨማሪም ሜሪ ልጆች ትዕግስትን በዚህ ምክንያት መፍራት እንደሌለባቸዉታዉቃለች፡፡

Mary said, “Tigist, I am sorry you do not friends. How does that make you feel?”

“It makes me sad. I take my HIV medicine every day to stay strong so I can play, but no one will play with me,” Tigist explained.

“ ሜሪም ትዕግስት ጓደኞች ስለሌሉሽ በጣም አዝናለሁ፤ ታድያ በዚህ ምክንያት ምንምአይሰማሽም?” በማለት ጠየቀቻት

“ በጣም ይከፋኛል፤ ጠንካራ ሆኜ እንድቆይ ብሎም በደንብ መጫወት እንድችል በየቀኑ የኤች አይ ቪ መድሃኒት እወስዳለሁ ነገር ግን አንድም ሰው ከእኔ ጋር ለመጫወት ፈቃደኛ

አይደለም:: ” ለመጫወት በማለት ትዕግስት አስረዳቻት፡፡

“I have an idea,” Mary said. “How about I come to your school and teach your class about HIV so they are not afraid of you?”

Tigist smiled and nodded. So Mary and Tigist walked to Tigist’s school together.

“ ” “ አንድ ሀሳብ አለኝ፡፡ አለች ሜሪ ፤ ወደ ትምህርት ቤትሽ ብመጣና ለክፍልሽ ልጀች ስለኤች አይ ቪ ባስተምር ምን ይመስልሻል? ከዚያ በኋላ ልጆች

አይፈሩሽም? “ በማለት ጠየቀቻት፡፡

ትዕግስትም ፈገግ ብላ አንጉቷን በእሺታ ነቀነቀች፤ ስለዚህም ሜሪና ትዕግስት ወደ ትዕግስት ትምህርት ቤት አንድላይ ሄዱ፡፡

When Mary and Tigist arrived at her school, the teacher had all the students in Tigist’s class sit in a circle and listen to Mary speak.

ሜሪና ትዕግስት ትምህርት ቤት ሲደርሱ አስተማሪዉ ሁሉንም የትግስት ክፍል ተማሪዎች በክብ ቁጭ እንዲሉ አድርጎ ሜሪ ስትናገር እንዲሰሟት አዘጋጃቸዉ፡፡

Mary explained to the class . . .

“HIV is an infection in Tigist’s body that could make her weak, but since Tigist takes her medicine, she is strong.

Do not be afraid of playing with Tigist, HIV is NOT spread by holding hands, playing games or sharing food.”

Mary continued, “Tigist is a sweet girl who should not be judged; we should support Tigist and make her feel welcome.”

ሜሪም ለክፍል ተማሪዎቹ እንዲህ በማለት አብራራችላቸዉ፡

“ ኤች አይ ቪ በትዕግስት ሰዉነት ዉስጥ የሚገኝ ደካማ ሊያደርጋት የሚችል ቫይረስ ነዉ፤ ነገር ግን ትዕግስት መድሃኒቷን በአግባቡ እየተጠቀመች ስለሆነ ጠንካራ ናት፡፡

ከትዕግስት ጋር ለመጫወት አትፍሩ፤ ኤች አይ ቪ በመነካካትና አብሮ በመጫወት”አይተላለፍም፡፡

“ ሜሪም በመቀጠል ትዕግስት መገለል የሌለባት ጥሩ ልጅ ናት፤ ትዕግስትን መደገፍ እንዲሁም ” ተወዳጅነት እንዲሰማት ማድረግ ነዉ የሚገባን በማለት አስረዳቻቸዉ፡፡

A young boy named Samuel stood up and said, “Ms. Mary, we should support Tigist and all people with HIV. We should not judge anyone.”

“ሳሙኤል የሚባል ልጅ ተነስቶ ወ/ ሪት ሜሪ ትዕግስትን እንዲሁም ከኤች አይ ቪ ጋር የሚኖሩ ሌሎች ሰዎችን በአጠቃላይ መደገፍ አለብን፤ ማንንም ሰዉ ላይ መፍረድና ማግለል” የለብንም ብሎ ተናገረ፡፡

“ ሁሉም ተማሪዎች በሳሙዔል ሀሳብ ተስማሙ፤ የክፍሉም መምህር በኤች አይ ቪ ዙርያ የተለያዩ ማስታወቂያዎችን ለመስራት ወረቀቶችና ማርከሮች አሉኝ፤ ይህ ክፍል ከኤች አይ ቪ ኤድስ ጋር የሚኖሩ

” ወገኖቻችንን እንደሚደግፍ ለማህበረሰባችን ማሳወቅ አለብን ብሎ አስረዳ፡፡

The class liked Samuel’s idea. The teacher told the class, “I have paper and markers for us to make signs about HIV. We should tell our community that our class does not judge people living with HIV.”

The class made signs showing their support.

ሁሉም ተማሪዎች የተለያዩ ማስታወቂያዎችን በማዘጋጀት ድጋፋቸዉን አሳዩ፡፡

The next day, Mary was taking a Bajaj from her house to the health center. While Mary was in the Bajaj she looked out the window and saw Tigist laughing and playing with a group of children from her school class. Mary smiled because she was happy Tigist now had friends.

በሚቀጥለዉም ቀን ሜሪ ከቤቷ ወደ ጤና ጣብያዉ እንደተለመደዉ በባጃጅ እየሄደች ትዕግስት ከብዙ የክፍሏተማሪዎች ጋር ስትስቅና ስትጫወት በመስኮት አሻግራ አየቻት፡፡

ሜሪም በጣም ደስ አላት ምክንያቱም አሁን ትግስት ጓደኞች አሏት።

In Ethiopia, there is often a stigma to tell family and friends if one is HIV positive. It is important to decrease this stigma, encourage people at risk for HIV to get tested, and encourage people living with HIV to take their medicine. If we do this, people living with HIV could live longer, healthier and happier lives.

በሀገራችን ኢትዮጵያ ኤች አይ ቪ ኤድስ ቫይረስ በደማቸዉ ዉስጥ ያለ ቤተሰቦቻችንንና ጓደኞቻችንን ማግለል የተለመደ ነዉ፡፡ ይሄንን ማግለል መቀነስ፤ ሰዎች እንዲመረመሩ ማበረታታት እንዲሁም ቫይረሱ
