DEAR ASSOCIATION MEMBERS & DELEGATES

Welcome to the ALSGBI Annual Scientific Meeting. We are delighted to be inSouthport for what promises to be an excellent Meeting and are very gratefulto our local organiser, Milind Shrotri and his Liverpool team for producingan excellent programme. The ALSGBI Laparoscopic Surgery Training Daywas held on Wednesday 25 November at Broadgreen Hospital, Liverpool.I am grateful for the support of ETHICON and Karl Storz and our expert facultyin providing high class practical training.

This is the 21st anniversary of the ALSGBI and the Association continues asa leader in laparoscopic surgery. The first day of the Meeting is devoted tolive laparoscopic surgery where we remain the only National Association toprovide this unique insight into surgical skills and techniques. We encourage your active interactionwith the surgeons who bravely put themselves in the firing line. The logistics for organisation of liveoperating are huge and we thank Karl Storz and Olympus for all their technical support.

Friday will feature a symposium on the use of mesh in abdominal surgery – a subject which is currentlyarousing much controversy. Speakers will present on the use and misuse of mesh in the upperabdomen, pelvis and abdominal wall. A medico-legal viewpoint will be provided by Dr Karen Ellisonfrom the Medical Protection Society. We are delighted and honoured to welcome Professor StevenDeMeester from the University of Southern California as the BJS visiting lecturer who will talk onrecurrent para-oesophageal hernia. There are also the prize sessions for the best paper, DVD andposter presentation.

WELCOME FROM THE LOCAL ORGANISER

DEAR ASSOCIATION MEMBERS & DELEGATES

Welcome to the North-West – with Liverpool and Southport hosting the 2015ALSGBI Annual Scientific Conference. Liverpool, the birthplace of the Beatles, gained the status of UNESCO’s second World Heritage City in England afterLondon in 2004. Designated as the European Capital of Culture for the year2008, Liverpool has a smart, gleaming city centre with a huge shoppingcomplex and an astounding range of pubs, bars and clubs making for anexciting night life for all age groups.

Liverpool has the reputation for the largest collection of museums in the UKand a large number of galleries, some of the famous ones being the Museumof Liverpool (the UK’s first museum dedicated to the history of a city) andthe International Slavery Museum, Merseyside Maritime Museum, Tate Liverpool, World Museum,Walker Art Gallery and The Bluecoat (a Grade I three hundred year old art centre!). Crosby, whereI live, has ‘Another Place’, a collection of one hundred awe-inspiring cast-iron life-size sculpturesby Angel of the North artist Antony Gormley staring out to sea.

Like the two major football clubs (Liverpool FC and Everton FC) with their intense rivalry, Liverpoolalso has two major acute care hospitals – Aintree University Hospital and Royal Liverpool andBroadgreen University Hospitals. The hospitals however sensibly appear to be on the way of mergingin the near future to avoid duplication of tertiary services for the region and centralising cancercare, which is spread or split across the Merseyside area. Aintree University Hospital will be thevenue for live operating for the ALSGBI Conference, while the Broadgreen Hospital site will be thevenue for the ALSGBI Laparoscopic Surgery Training Day.

The main conference will be hosted by Southport at the Southport Theatre & Convention Centre (STCC)with its impressive Floral Hall. Situated just 20 miles north of Liverpool, 30 miles from Manchesterand with excellent transport links, Southport is a popular place for days out, short breaks and seasideholidays! It is rumoured that Napoleon re-modelled certain parts of Paris based on his knowledgeof Southport during his stay in the town back in the mid-19th century.

The highlight of our Conference Dinner will be the after-dinner speech by John Parrott, notable worldsnooker champion of the past and a current snooker pundit and commentator. We are hoping thatthe memory of this exciting meeting will last for a long time in the minds of attending delegates.

WELCOME FROM THE ALTS CHAIR

DEAR ALTS MEMBERS & DELEGATES

Welcome to all ALTS Members new and old and welcome to our AnnualConference on 26and 27of November. This year we have come back to Englandand are very lucky to be visiting Southport.

Southport lies on the Irish Sea coast of North West England and is fringedto the north by the Ribble Estuary. The town is situated 16.7 miles (26.9 km)to the north of the city of Liverpool (hence the title of the conference!) and14.8 miles (23.8 km) southwest of the city of Preston.

Historically a part of Lancashire, the town in its present form was foundedin 1792when William Sutton, an innkeeper from Churchtown, built a bathinghouse at what now is the south end of Lord Street, the town’s main thoroughfare. Town attractionsinclude Southport Pier with its tramway, the second longest seaside pleasure pier in the BritishIsles and Lord Street, an elegant tree-lined shopping street, once home of Napoleon III of France.

The first real evidence of an early settlement here is in the Domesday Book, in which the area iscalled Otergimele. The name is derived from Oddrgrimir meaning the son of Grimmand and is linkedto the Old Norse word mel meaning sandbank. The Domesday Book states that there were 50 hutsin Otergimele, housing a population of 200.

Anyway, back to the Conference – the Council and Local Organiser, Mr Milind Shrotri, have put togethera great programme, once again something for everyone. Thursday will feature live operating allowingeveryone to watch and learn together.

Friday will be split with a parallel programme for ALTS which I hope you will find interesting. Theprogramme includes a talk by one of the local organisers, an SCP Miss Sara Dalby, who has justreturned from a 2 month stay in America. Also we are going to have a talk from Mr David Newtonabout the minefield of NHS procurement. Hopefully he will give us some tips and tricks on how tonavigate through this convoluted system, which gives us all a great deal of headaches!

I am certainly looking forward to our debate of ‘That’s Another Fine Mesh …..’, I am sure this willbe lively and informative.

The Conference Dinner will be held on the Thursday night at the Ramada Plaza Southport. This is alwaysa good evening with some entertainment thrown in for good measure along with a reasonableamount of alcohol. Looking forward to meeting you all.

Olympus Medical is delighted to showcase the exciting VISERA 4K UHD imaging platform which

provides four times the resolution of existing HD systems and also features excellent colour reproduction

to facilitate the identification of blood vessels and other fine tissue, helping to improve visibility

during surgery.

4K images provide a broader range of colour reproduction compared to Full HD images, and the

extensive range of hues enables more detailed colour calibration. This helps surgeons to distinguish

the edges and details of fine tissue features.

Included within the product range is a large 55-inch monitor which is helpful for delicate procedures

and makes the ultra-high-definition images easier to see together with increased magnification,

further enhancing detail.

Among energy devices, the Olympus THUNDERBEAT platform is the only instrument which integrates

the benefits of both advanced bipolar and ultrasonic energy. THUNDERBEAT delivers the energies

into tissue simultaneously, providing rapid cutting and reliable vessel sealing – contributing to enhanced

efficiency through reduced instrument usage, fewer instrument exchanges, uninterrupted operation

flow, and operating time savings.

Both systems can be seen on the Olympus Medical stand A.

Fisher & Paykel Healthcare entered the respiratory market in 1971 with the development of a unique respiratoryhumidifier for use in critical care. We now offer a broad range of humidification products for use in Critical Care,Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and more recently the Surgical Environment.

The HumiGard Surgical Humidification System has been designed to protect the peritoneum against damage causedby cold, dry surgical gas during laparoscopic surgery. The surgical gas from the insufflator is humidified and heated, then maintained at 37°C and 100% relative humidity until it reaches the patient, enabling the peritoneum to remainmoist and warm.

HumiGard has been shown to maintain normothermia, prevent post-operative pain and improve recovery time followinglaparoscopic surgery. More recent data would suggest HumiGard can reduce surgical site infection rates duringcolorectal surgery.
