shortoff-roaderafterward.IunderstandthattheCarpRidgestillhasthecapacitytotakeprisoners!ThephantombrakeproblemontheRangeRoverraiseditsuglyheadagainonthewaytotheOilerandalthoughwewereabletogetabrakepedalbackattheOiler,anoffroaderwascontra-indicated.IthinkthatImighthaveajammingpistoninoneofthecalipersandwiththeincreasedpressuretostopthetwotonsofRR,somefluidispushingpastthemastercylinderseals.IguessthatnewStainlessSteelpotsandanewmastercylinderisthebestsolution.
FortheOiler,JLprovidedgreatfacilitiesandtheweatherwasuncharacteristicallycooperative.However,thelowattendanceattheeventandthesubsequentcancellationoftheGuyFawkeseventdidraiseaseriousquestionthatTerryKingandIdiscussed,whilehetriedtokeepcatsoutoftheantifreeze,(really!)whichistimelyforthecomingAGM.Whattypeofclubdothememberswant?
President’s MessageTraditionallytheclubhashadtwolargerevents;TheMapleSyruprunandtheBirthdayParty,alongwiththeChristmaspartyandsmallereventsliketheOiler.Itseemsthatatthesmallereventstheattendancelargelycomprisestheusualsuspects.OffroadinghasbeensomewhatadhocanditwasthoughtthatthecreationofRegionalSecretarieswouldaidmoremembersbecominginvolvedineventsthatneedlessorganizationbutwouldbestillcoveredbytheclub’sinsurance.Itmightbeabitearlytosaybut,asperthebonfireparty,thereisnotmajorsupportforRegionaleventseither.Theclubcancontinuetosustainthelimitedslateofeventsbutwithoutthecontributionofthemembershipitmightdeservethemonikerofthe“BirthdayPartyClub”.
Withoutthefeedbackandsupportofthemembershiptheexecutivecannottaketheclubinadirectionthatmeetstheneedsandexpectationsofthemembers.Therefore,somefoodforthoughtfortheAGM;whattypeofclubdothememberswantandhowcantheExecutivehelpyougetit?

1990,OVLRhadbecomethelargestLandRoverclubinCanadaandthefastestgrowingsimilarorganizationinNorthAmerica.Ourmembershiphadgrowntomorethan70andourmonthlynewsletterwasmailedto15LandRoverclubsinNorthAmerica,England,EuropeandAfrica.Ourmailboxwasoverflowingwithnewslettersfromother

Busy, busy, busy …
AFTER. Brewer’s spiffy runabout after it had undergone much work at the hands of Neil and the lads from the club’s rebuild program. It went west soon after and was last heard from scaling the mountains around Agassiz.
BEFORE: Neil Brewer and family huddle beside his just-purchased 88 after it was dragged out of a Quebec weedfield. The 2A needed everything but the gearshift knob and took over a year to reappear as the dandy it was meant to be.

Roverorganization.Thenewsletterincreasinglycarriedarticlesupdatedfromotherpublicationsratingwinches,tiredesign,offroaddriving,soundandheatinsulationideas,unleadedfuelandourengines,roadandbushlighting,firefightingandemergencymedicalequipment,compassandmapreading(noGPSbackthen)andarticlesonwinterclothing,campingandequipment.

ThatsummerNeilBrewer,theearlymemberwhohaddesignedtheOVLRlogo,movedtoAgassiz,BCwithhisfamilyandSeries2A.Theshortbox,whichhadbeenrescuedfromaQuebecweedfieldandtenderlyrestoredundertheclub’srebuildprogram,wouldsoonfinditselfclingingtothecliffsafterNeiljoinedthelocalmountainrescueorganization.Afittingresurrectionindeed.
Byyear’sendwehadgonethrough$4,000infundscollectedandspentonouractivitiesandprograms,anewrecord.Thatdidnotincludemembers’dueswhichhadalwaysbeenreservedtoensurenewsletterproduction.Nowthatwehadestablishedastrongbase,somefeltitwastimetolookaheadatwhattheclubmightdotoimproveservicetomembers.
Oneissuestoodout.Feedingthemasses.Beginninglongbeforetheclubhadformalized,backwhenALROCwasjustakid,goodfoodhadbeenacentralpartofouractivities.Whetheritwasarebuildweekendinsomeones’backyard,athree-daybushtriporjustameetinginapub,goodfoodwasalwayshighontheagenda.

Concern about the many individual camp stoves used on bush trips and family events was part of the decision to build the unit and centralize cooking.

Thatwasmatedwithastudyofthebenefitsofusingsyntheticversusnormalpetroleumbasedengineoil.Anotherstorylookedatreplacingstandardbrakefluidwithsiliconeandtheuseofnon-corrodingcopperbrakelinesinsteadofstandardsteellines.Results:Silicone,good—waterproof.Copperbrakelines,bad—vibrationcracks.
Insupportofthemovetounleadedgas,thecluboffereda$25subsidytoencouragememberstoinstalltheupgradedstellitevalvesandseatsdesignedforusewiththenewfuelstandard.And,inresponsetocomplaintsbymembersaboutthecostandconfusionofgettingpartspastCanadaCustoms,weworkedwithAtlanticBritishPartsNewYork,onasystemofdiscountsandimprovedwaystodealwithcustoms,taxesandduties.
BytheJuneeditionthatyearthenewsletterhadgrownto14pagesandwassofatCanadaPostbeganreturningthemforadditionalstamps.Wetriedditchingtheenvelope,leavingablankpageonthebackformembers’addressandgoingwiththe“fold

Whenwebegan,mealsonthetrailalwaysmeantarageofcampstovesteeteringontailgatesandlogsorsearingthegrasswithsomeoneonconstantwatchforaccidentalblazes.Foodwasdividedinto“toomuchofthis,notenoughofthat”andawholelotofwasteasmembersshoppedforthemselves.Socializingatmealtimewasdifficultaspeoplespenttheirtimeseparatedandhuddledovertheirlittlestovesasdarknesscreptin.Anditwasslow.Individuallunchesonthetrailcouldbeathree-hourprocess—OKiftheweatherwasnicebutaproblemwhentryingtoreachthehighgroundbeforearainynightfall.
Itbecameapparentwiththeincreasingmembershipthatasinglecookingstationwithasetmenuwasthewaytogo.Itwasquicker,thefoodwasbetter,wasteandcostwerereducedaswasthechanceofaninfernospringingupinthetwiggyunderbrush.
Theideasofapermanent,mobilecookingfacilitythatcouldbetowedtoactivities,perhapswithenoughroomtostoreagrowingpileofequipmentandcampinggear,hadbeenruminatinginthemindsofseveralmembersforawhile—especiallythosechargedwithroundingupequipmentbeforetripsandkeepingthingsonschedule.

EnthusiasmwashighandbyMarchtheyhadaproposal:ThefoundationwouldbeaneightbyfivefootutilitytrailersittingonasteelboxframewithawheeltrackmatchingaSeriesLandRover.Itwouldhavehighgroundclearance,useSerieswheelsandbrakesandbecapableoffollowingaLandRoverthroughanyterrain.
Whencompletedtheunitwouldcarry50gallons(beforemetric,eh)ofpotablewater,largepropane-firedstoves,12feetoffoodpreparationsurfaces,coolers,lights,acommunicationscenterand40cubicfeetofstoragespace.
Estimatedcostwas$4,000butthatwasmainlyformaterials.Volunteerhelpinbuildingitwasessentialortheprojectwasanon-starter.TreasurerTomhitthebooksanddeterminedwecoulddoitifwespreadthecostoverthreeyearsandscheduledsomefund-raisingprojectstohelp.

ProfessionalwelderRobinCraigvolunteeredtooverseeconstructionoftheframeandveteranrebuildersMcDandBates(Pilgrim)wouldcoordinatefabricationofthebodywork.PhaseOnewastheutilitytrailerfoundation,estimatedat$900.ItcameinunderbudgetintimefortheFallframeoiler,ferryingequipmentand,ofcourse,lunch.
Whileourclubtrailerwasoccupyingsomemembers,otherswereworkingwithaCanadian/AmericanLandRovergroupplanningatrans-CanadatoAlaskaexpeditionforthesummerof’92.OVLRwasaskedtoassistthegroupwithaccommodation,communicationsandmaintenancewhentheypassedthroughOttawainJuly.
Initialestimatesbygrouporganizersputthenumberofvehiclesat50andparticipantsnear100.VPYvestookresponsibilityfortheproject,arrangingcampsitesatLebretonFlats,compilingmapsandtouristinformation,laundromatsandshoppingcentersforthegroup’svisit.AstheJuly10arrivalapproached,hecoordinatedtheirdeparturefromQuebecCityandarrivalinPictonaftertheirovernighterwithus.
BythetimetheysetoutfromHalifax,thelittlegroupwasmuchreducedfromoriginalnumbersandbythetimetheyreachedOttawathereweresevenvehiclesand15tiredandhungryparticipants.
OVLRturnedouttomeetthemattheFlatswithournewexpeditiontrailerservinghotcocoaandbedtimessnacks.Thecookingandfoodprepstage
ofthekitchenhadjustbeencompletedandnextmorningweservedupabreakfastof70eggs,10poundsofsausages,pilesoftoastandhotcoffee.Goodfriendsweremadethatdayas34memberstradedstorieswithourguests,threevehiclesfromtheUS,onefromHolland,anotherfromFinlandandathirdfromSweden.JohnCranfieldfromNovaScotia,theloneCanadian,wouldlaterleavethegroupwhenitpassedManitoulinIsland.
Afterbreakfast,LandRovermechanicJasonDowell,shepherdedastinkydieseltohisshopforrepairsand“tourmaster”Batescartedhistopless107longboxfulloftouristsaroundCanada’sCapitalforthehighlightsofParliamentHill,theRideauLocksandthecanal.
WewavedgoodbyethatafternoonandthegroupsetoutforPictonwheretheTorontoAreaRoverClubpickedthemupforatourbeforeaimingthematManitoba.SeveralweekslaterwelearnedthatfivevehiclesreachedAnchorageanddippedtheirwheelsinthePacific.ExpeditionleaderRonMowrey,aftertwoyearsorganizingtheevent,didn’tquitemakeit.HewasT-bonedoutsideCalgaryandhadtoleavetheremainsinadumpster.Still,hesaid,inspiteofthebumpsandbruises,hehadthetimeofhislife.
LaterthatyearwelearnedLandRoverwasreturningtotheNorthAmericanmarketwiththe110model.LROmagazineopinedthatthe$40,000introductorypricetagwasalittlesteepforabrandtryingtobreakbackintoamarketithadso“rudelyabandoned”nearly20yearsearlier.

H aroldHuggins,themanwhofoundedALROC
andhelpedshapeOVLR,diedOctober1.Hisobituary,writtenbyhisdaughterJillandsonRod,waspublishedintheGlobeandMail.OVLRsentflowerstoHarold’sfuneralandJillsays,“ManythankstotheOVLRguysforyoursentimentsandrememberanceofHarold.OurfamilyappreciateditandIknowHaroldwouldbeverypleased.”TheGlobeorbituaryisreproducedhereformembers’information.
HaroldCharlesHugginspassedawaypeacefullyonOctober1,2008atPeacePortalLodgeinWhiteRock,B.C.attheageof94.HewasborninEdmontononJanuary18,1914.Theyoungestofeightchildren,thefamilymovedtoVancouverwhenhewasaboy.AsayoungteenheworkedatSpencer’sdepartmentstorewhichlaterbecameEaton’s.
InhisearlytwentieshewasdiagnosedwithtuberculosisandspentfouryearsatTranquilleSanatoriuminKamloopswherehemettheloveofhislife,ElizabethCodd,alsoapatient.In1941HaroldandElizabethweremarriedinVancouverandhadtwochildren,RoderickandJill.HaroldworkedasapubliceducatorfortheTBSocietyandtheAlcoholismFoundationofB.C.HewasactiveintheVancouverFilmCouncilduringthe1950’s.
In1967thefamilymovednorthtoYellowknifewhereHaroldwasChiefofAlcoholEducationforthegovernmentoftheN.W.T.HisyearsintheNorthwererichwithexperiencesandincludedtravelthroughouttheArcticwithhiswork.
Inthelate1970’s,HaroldandElizabethretiredtoOttawawheretheirsonRodandhiswifeRuthlive.HavingdevelopedapassionfortheoriginalBritishLandRover,HaroldfoundedtheAssociationofLandRoverOwnersofCanadaandwasafoundingmemberoftheOttawaValleyLandRovers.
Finallyin1986HaroldandElizabethreturnedtotheWestCoastwheretheirdaughterJilllives,andsettledbytheseainWhiteRocktoenjoyaviewoftheocean.HebecameafoundingmemberoftheRoverlandersofB.C.andvolunteeredinmanycapacitieswithinthecommunityaswellasdeliveringthelocalnewspaperuntiltheageof89.
Haroldwillberememberedforhisloveofthesteamlocomotive,hisLandRovers,pin-holecameras,hishatsandhomebrew,butmostlyforhisgenerosityofspirit,colourfulcharacterandcuriosityoflife.Hewillberememberedbyallandlovinglymissedbyhisfamily.
HaroldwillbelaidtorestatSunnysideLawnCemeteryinSurrey,B.C.withElizabeth,hisbelovedwifeof62years,whopassedawayin2003.
