Monthly Mission Focus Collection: Operation Hope

Operation HOPE (Helping Others Prepare for Excellence) is a faith based after school program that enhances the lives of our children in a time where most parents are working two jobs to make ends meet.

Collection Items for February 23: Pencils, Crayons, Notebook Paper, Colored Pencils, Markers

Please bring items the last Sunday of each month and put them under the “Way to Give Arch” in the main lobby.

"Whatever our gifts, education, or vocation might be, our calling is to do God's work on earth." As stated above from The Prayer of Jabez by Bruce Wilkinson, it is our calling to do God's work here on earth. Our Sunday School class had the great joy and privilege to serve on Sunday, February 16 at the RIFA Soup Kitchen. As one of FUMC's five essential mission focuses, I was so excited to have the chance to serve.

There were so many volunteers that we really had to be organized so that we wouldn't be in each other’s way. What a great problem to have… TOO many volunteers! As Connie, the sweet lady in charge. gave us our work instructions, she also reminded us our smile and kind words might be the only nice thing that happens to them that day. Wow….that was humbling. I get kind words and deeds offered to me each and every day. It hit home to me that I take for granted how blessed I am and I need to truly appreciate it when a family member,

friend, or stranger offers me a touch of kindness. I need to thank my heavenly father each and every time it happens.

It also challenged me to be more mindful that simple acts of kindness are something that Jesus would have us do each day. We might not know where, what or when the opportunity will present itself, but if we are obedient to God's call in our lives, we will truly be blessed.

Just serving those folks at the “Soup Kitchen” gave me a very small glimpse of what my daughter Sarah saw and did on her journey around the world to serve the least of these.

Wanda’s Wellness WisdomWanda Scanlon, FUMC Health & Welfare Representative; RN, Regional Hospital of Jackson, TN

Don’t Ignore These Seven Symptoms

Our bodies come in many different models. We may have been issued one that’s short, tall, lean, thick, wrinkled, or bald. No matter what it looks like we have it for life; no trade-ins allowed. Fact is, you know your body best and learning to listen, when it’s trying to send you a message that something is wrong, is critical to your health. Symptoms can come and go, some without major consequence; but, there are symptoms you should never ignore. Let’s review these and learn what to do should they arise.

1. Sudden and Increasing Pain in the Upper Right of Your Abdomen - This may indicate gallstones. The gallbladder is located under the liver. Gallstones can cause bile blockage, infection, even bursting the organ if left untreated. If it bursts, the contents are very toxic to the linings outside the other organs in your abdomen. Get help immediately if you feel this pain, especially if it is accompanied by a fever. Fever and sudden belly pain usually mean trouble. ( P.S….The pain associated with an appendix attack is usually a dull pain near the belly button that becomes sharper as it moves upward and to the right.)

2. Blurred, Shaded, or Double Vision - These symptoms will be sudden and distinct, and may be an indication of uncontrolled diabetes, or detaching retina. Go to your doctor immediately as these symptoms are usually reversible and further damage is avoidable.

attacks and long- term lung damage.

7. Persistent Nausea - Strangely enough this may be a heart attack warning. In fact, 95% of women complain of nausea and indigestion up to a month before having an attack. Our heart has no nerve endings to feel pain, so it sends signals to the spine, which sends signals to the rest of the body. This is called referred pain. Here are symptoms of a heart attack that no one should ever ignore:• Pressure, tightness and squeezing pain across the chest• Pain radiating down the arm, shoulders, jaw, neck, and back, particularly on the left side• Shortness of breath• Dizziness, sweating, weakness, overwhelming fatigue• Lightheadedness, feeling faint• Indigestion, nausea, vomiting• Coughing and a feeling that your heart is jumping in your chest.

If you are experiencing these symptoms and feel that you are having a heart attack:• Call 911 and say “I’m having a heart attack.” Have someone drive you to the emergency room if an ambulance cannot get to you in time.• Chew an aspirin; unless you are allergic or have bleeding stomach ulcers.• Lie down.

No one wants to be labeled a hypochondriac, but we all want to be labeled smart. Don’t ignore your body when it’s talking to you…pay attention and it might just save your life!

3. The “Worst Headache of My Life” - A severe, sudden headache may be an aneurysm (ballooning of a blood vessel in the brain). This could mean a ruptured blood vessel in the brain, fatal in 40% of cases. Seek help immediately with these warning symptoms:• Pain above or behind the eye• Severe neck pain• Numbness on one side of the face

4. A Leg Cramp or Ache That Won’t Go Away - A cramp, pain or tenderness in the leg can be a DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis). The ache is a sign there is a clot in the leg. It can move and travel to your lungs blocking arteries. Pain and or swelling in the calf, pain behind the knee, or tenderness in the thigh are common symptoms. DVTs most often occur after prolonged sitting, especially during air travel. Prevention is key…so get up and move around as often as possible, drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol when flying.

5. Bleeding Gums - We all may brush too vigorously and cause a little bleeding, but if you experience spontaneous bleeding gums or nosebleeds for no reason, you need to check with a doctor. This condition may indicate a problem with the cells that clot our blood. A condition such as leukemia may be present.

Eyes of the HeartBook Review by Jennifer Trently

This time of the year as Epiphany ends and we begin to think about Lent, we often think about what we are going to give up. Yet I would invite you to think about trying something to enrich your relationship with God. Many of us are familiar with Lectio Divina; the practice of sacred reading. Perhaps you have not heard the term, Visio Divina. Visio Divina refers to sacred seeing. As technology has made photography accessible to anyone with a phone, Visio Divina has come to mean more than looking at or observing a picture. It involves learning to receive images as gifts from God. Therefore, whether you are a seasoned photographer or just enjoy taking pictures for fun, I invite you to engage in Visio Divina through the book, Photography As a Christian Contemplative Practice: Eyes of the Heart. This eight-chapter book features meditations, photographic explorations and reflections designed to help the reader experience God in a deeper way.

Written by Christine Valters Paintner in 2013, Dr. Painter in her introduction gives the reader not only a complete overview of the book but discusses her journey and describes how to use the book. Painter calls the book, “process-oriented.” It is not a book to be devoured in one sitting but rather to be implemented in one’s life over time and what is important is not the end product but the process. Using the various aspects of photography as a metaphor for the spiritual journey Eyes of the Heart invites us through the first six chapters to consider light and the shadows, contrast, composition, perspective, patterns, color, and reflection. Paintner leads us down a path of reframing and learning to receive images as a contemplative practice rather than taking them to get them done.

The book concludes with two chapters on the Holy. chapter 7 deals with seeing the holy within ourselves. Then chapter 8 focuses on seeing the holy everywhere. Thus, we are taken on a journey from looking to seeing; from disgust to holiness and from self-loathing to love. Following chapter 8, there is a conclusion, acknowledgments, notes and additional resources all

of which give the reader many choices of places to continue their journey.

Using a mixture of photographs, scripture, poetry and variety of writings from mystics such as Richard Rohr, Hildegard of Bingen and Thomas Merton; there is plenty of creativity and insight to be gained. This book can be used for small group study or for individual study during anytime of the year but especially for those times when we are trying to give God more of our focus.

A little over a 140 pages, Eyes of the Heart while not technical in nature, is a book for those who seek to experience the Holy in a new way. However, it is written with no expectation of experience with contemplation or photography. Available as a paperback or as an e-book for under $15, this book is well worth its purchase price.

Has your God grown too small? Consider reading, Photography As A Christian Contemplative Practice: Eyes of the Heart as a part of journeying through Lent, to the Cross and to the Resurrection. Engage all of your senses and experience Jesus more deeply.
