FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Fall 2017 The Messenger While thinking of the coming newsletter (the one which you are reading now) I cant help but think of the passing of time. It seems that time, or our perception of it can be a relevant thing. Time itself is very exact and can be measured in milli-seconds and even a year may be calculated to a pre- cise moment. The atomic clock measures time and constantly puts out updates and corrective infor- mation to our units at home. With this it is still a wonder that we perceive time in a different and very personal way. The clock may seem to drag or the hands or numbers fly by in a flash according to how busy or occupied we may be. There may be truth in the old adage that a watched pot never boils, but if you examine it analytically and take two pots and watch one and ignore the other they will boil at exactly the same time! With that, it always seems that summer drags by until the fourth of July then it seems to be gone in a hurry. Maybe its the anticipation of warmer weather, trips, garden, etc. but it seems that we have July 4th and then seemingly before we know it school is starting and the leaves are turning. So before you know it, events which seem way out there will be upon us (including Thanks- giving and Christmas). We are planning more activities of various levels to bring us a little closer to- gether and there are also the setevents to remember and prepare for. In August, we will be going to the Sword of Peace Theatre to see Pathway to Freedom, a his- torical drama/musical about the underground railroad. We are also looking at a Christmas event to attend. There is the annual talent show, the bazaar, and of course, charge conference and its associated meetings. The choir and hand bells will be getting back on schedule. Also, if you have a suggestion or request concerning worship, programming or a fellowship event please let us know. Warm regards, Carl Pastors Ponderings The Messenger newsletter will be sent primarily by email. If you are not already on our newsletter email list, please email us at [email protected] to be added. The Messenger

While thinking of the coming newsletter (the one which you are reading now) I can’t help but

think of the passing of time. It seems that time, or our perception of it can be a relevant thing. Time

itself is very exact and can be measured in milli-seconds and even a year may be calculated to a pre-

cise moment. The atomic clock measures time and constantly puts out updates and corrective infor-

mation to our units at home. With this it is still a wonder that we perceive time in a different and very

personal way. The clock may seem to drag or the hands or numbers fly by in a flash according to

how busy or occupied we may be. There may be truth in the old adage that “a watched pot never

boils,” but if you examine it analytically and take two pots and watch one and ignore the other they

will boil at exactly the same time! With that, it always seems that summer drags by until the fourth of

July then it seems to be gone in a hurry. Maybe it’s the anticipation of warmer weather, trips, garden,

etc. but it seems that we have July 4th and then seemingly before we know it school is starting and the

leaves are turning.

So before you know it, events which seem way out there will be upon us (including Thanks-

giving and Christmas). We are planning more activities of various levels to bring us a little closer to-

gether and there are also the “set” events to remember and prepare for.

In August, we will be going to the Sword of Peace Theatre to see Pathway to Freedom, a his-

torical drama/musical about the underground railroad. We are also looking at a Christmas event to

attend. There is the annual talent show, the bazaar, and of course, charge conference and its associated

meetings. The choir and hand bells will be getting back on schedule. Also, if you have a suggestion

or request concerning worship, programming or a fellowship event please let us

know.

Warm regards, Carl

Total Solar Eclipse On Monday, August 21, 2017, all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun. Anyone within the path of totality can see one of nature’s most awe-inspiring sights - a total solar eclipse. This path, where the moon will completely cover the sun and the sun's tenuous atmosphere - the corona - can be seen, will stretch from Lincoln Beach, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. Observers outside this path will still see a partial solar eclipse where the moon covers part of the sun's disk. FOOD LION FEEDS CHARITABLE FOUNDATION

SUPPORTS FUEL UP

Siler City First United Methodist Church FUEL UP for Chatham Middle School is very thankful to receive $2500 from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation to help purchase supplemental weekend food for at risk students for the coming 2017-2018 school year. The con-gregation is most appreciative of Susan Helmer’s efforts for applying for such a worthy grant. Siler City Food Lion Managers Sam Wilburn, Grover Paige, and Vince Harris, and other store staff have been effi-cient, supportive, and friendly throughout the year- not only in placing our bulk orders and assisting in loading them, but also in helping us determine the healthiest and most cost effi-cient purchases. They also supported and provided a training session for the Chatham Middle Cooking Matters for Teens Class. Adult volunteers, as well as the students, gained help-ful shopping tips and an increased appreciation for Food Li-on. Siler City Food Lion is a great example of Communi-ty support and Corporate Responsibility. Please take time to thank them for their continued support. The next time you run out for groceries please consider supporting our local Food Lion.

SUMMER SNACK PROGRAM

A HUGE SUCCESS!

Our SNACK program ran every other week this summer from Wednesday, June 14th through Wednesday, August 9th. The SNACK program successfully served numerous com-munity members each night it was held. One hundred and eighty-five bags were passed out on June 14th, and 197 bags on June 28. On July 12th, a total of 199 bags were given out

while on July 26th 224 bags were handed out. One hundred and fifty-three bags were distributed to community members on the August 9, which was the last night the SNACK program was held. Numerous volunteers helped unload the trucks that arrived between 2:55 PM and 4:15 PM and were ready to serve com-munity members by 6PM. The church is most appreciative of Mike and Mary DeAngelo for organizing the SNACK

program and to the many volunteers who gave of their time to make it possible.

Cards of Gratitude

Dear Church Family, Our family would like to express out great appreci-ation for the beautiful plant, cards, food, thoughts and prayers that you sent our way at Billy’s pass-ing. The snacks you provided after the celebration of life service were wonderful and not only fed our souls, but allowed us to meet with family and friends, some of whom had traveled a long way to be with us. You have always been a source of strength and support to our family, but especially these last 5 years through Billy’s battle with can-cer. We truly appreciate you all. Love, Maria, Emily, and Christopher Tanner

***********************

Dear FUMC, I would like to thank the church family for sharing my 88th birthday. God has blessed me in so many ways. Thanks for letting us use the fellowship hall and kitchen, too. Love, Ruby Holt

***********************

Dear FUMC, During a time like this we realize how much our friends and relatives really mean to us. Your ex-pression of sympathy will always be remembered. Thank you for your thoughtfulness during this dif-ficult time. The plant is beautiful! Frankie Wood Tate Family

*********************** Parker Murphy sent a note expressing his appreci-ation for the Bible he received at graduation and as a recipient of the Poston Scholarship!

The Messenger Summer 2017

The “Threads of Faith” have been busy little bees knitting away creating beautiful prayer shawls, hats, and such for those in need. First United Methodist Church is truly blessed to have such a talented

group of ladies.

Fall 2017

STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN

This fall you will notice a change in out stewardship campaign. FUMC has used a program known as the “Pony Express” and the familiar saddlebags. In fact, most can’t remember when it was initiated, but by my feedback most have grown either to familiar or just plain tired of it. The con-cept of stewardship is on of our spiritual disciplines. Scripture has a few more than 500 verses on prayer and a few less than 500 on faith, but over 2,350 concerning money. What we do with our resources is not half-haphazard but is part of our discipline. That is, we are to develop certain hab-its to be practiced deliberately and regularly to enable our spiritual growth. We will be introducing a monthly teaching insert to our bulletin. This is to provide infor-mation on our stewardship and to guide us into forming this discipline. You will be asked to study, pray and make your estimate as a goal for your sharing of God’s resources sometime the fall. It is our prayer that you will find this informative, encouraging and challenging!

FUEL-UP UPDATE

Another year of Fuel Up is history as we prepare for year number four. In 2016-2017, 21 volunteers provid-ed over 460 total volunteer hours with Fuel Up at Chatham Middle School. We provided 35 weeks of weekend food bags totaling 1,750 bags for students. Additionally, we partnered with Interfaith Food Shuttle of Durham in providing 25 bags each week or 875 bags to total 2,625 food bags. These bags totaled over 18,000 pounds of nonperishable food items. Fresh apples or oranges were provided to all 75 stu-dents 8 times during the year for about 10 ½ pounds per student or about 800 pounds of fresh fruit. The food bags were provided at less than $7.25 per bag. As we look to the 2017-2018 school year, Thurs-day, September 28 at 1 pm will be our first packing day. This will be our first year without a grant from Carolina Meadows as they are rethinking their grant process. However, part of the monies historically provided by Carolina Meadows has been given by the Food Lion Corpo-ration. Thank you, Food Lion. All donations are greatly appre-ciated. Donations can be made “in honor of” or “in memory of” a special person. Thanks again for all of the support in 2016-2017 and we look forward to your continued support this year.

Senior Care Group We have had several one-time requests for our Senior Care Group, and we are serving individual meals to one person on a weekly basis. If you or someone you know needs assistance, please let Bob Andrews, Pastor Carl or the church office know.

Thank you! Your Senior

Dear Church Members, God has been so incredibly good to us. We are so blessed to be able to afford (and work in) such a grand and beautiful church. As we approach the beginning of out Stewardship Campaign, we personally want to thank all of you who give of your time, talents, re-sources, and who pray for the church and Pastor Carl. We are so thankful for our jobs and we love working here! So, for all of the things you give, the kind words, and encouragement, thank you! Sincerely, Pam and YoLonda
