“This year’s roster has more pieces for usto play with,” Glusko said. “Our versatility, depth, and projected balanced scoringshould be some of our strengths. Everyonemust learn, understand, and embrace theirrole. We must value each possession andlimit our turnovers.”

Asked about what she learned during thesquad’s recent exhibition game at Division IUNC Greensboro, Glusko answered, “Wecompeted hard, and when we were disci-plined, we played very well. We also learnedin the second half how undisciplined playresults in poor shooting and points off turn-overs for your opponent.”

In the backcourt, Glusko said that Robinsonand Mills will likely get the starting nods.“Cy’erra is a true point guard who’sathleticism changes the way we play. Sheis a leader who pressures non-stop andknows where the ball needs to be on theoffensive end. Her presence allows us tomove Briana to the two-guard, which will cre-ate new avenues for Briana to score andincreases our overall team speed.

“Camille, who gained valuable experiencelast year as a freshman, can add three op-tions at the two-guard position. She can hit

The Francis Marion University women’sbasketball team will open its 2013-14 sea-son this weekend (Nov. 8-9) at the Univer-sity of Tampa Classic in Florida.

FMU will play the host school on Friday at2:30 p.m. and will then meet Florida South-ern College on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Bothcontests will be played in the Spartans’3,432-season Bob Martinez Sports Center.

Fourth-year Francis Marion head coachKate Glusko welcomes back fiveletterwinners, including two starters, fromlast year’s 13-13 squad. In all, every one ofthe returning five started at some point dur-ing the 2012-13 campaign. Tampa returnsfour starters from its 19-9 squad of a yearago, while Florida Southern returns onestarter from last year’s 10-17 team.

FMU captured a four-point win over Tampain 2003 in the only previous meeting be-tween the two programs, while the Patriotsand FSC have never met before on thehardwood.

Francis Marion is 28-12 all-time in seasonopeners, and FMU has won 40 of its last46 regular-season match-ups with non-conference opponents.

“This classic provides us with two strongopening opponents,” said Glusko. “We willquickly see where we stand, where ourstrengths are, and what areas we mayneed to work on.

“I am really enjoying this team. They haveembraced the journey and they want to getbetter. If they maintain that mentality all year,we have a very bright future.”

Senior forward Dee Gray (10 ppg, 6.6 rpg)and sophomore guard Camille Dash (5.6ppg, 2.2 rpg) are the pair who ended lastseason in the starting five. Among the otherreturnees are senior forward Kim Roach(9.0 ppg, 5.3 rpg), who ranked fourth in thePBC in field goal percentage (51.5%); se-nior guard Erin Pinkett (6.6 ppg), who wasfifth in the PBC in three-point percentage(40.3%); and junior point guard BrianaRobinson (6.6 ppg), who was fifth in theconference in assists per game (4.6 apg).

The Patriots have added seven newcom-ers to the roster, including a pair of NCAADivision I transfers: 5-10 guard ChelseaDukes (Delaware State University) and 5-8junior guard Cy’erra Mills (University ofNorth Dakota). Two junior college trans-fers, 5-11 forward Alaysia Watts and 5-9

the three, shoot the pull-up jumper, anddrive to the rim. Both Erin and Lauren arethree-point threats that can stretch thedefense. Chelsea is long and athletic andprovides us another outside scoringthreat.

“The return of Kim (Roach) and arrival ofAlaysia and Alexia will allow Dee (Gray) toroam more to the outside, instead of hav-ing to play in the paint. That will allow herto use her slash to the basket skills in-stead of having to post up. Kim andAlaysia will provide good post play, butalso two players who can step out and hita jumper. Alexia moves well and will giveus more of a physical presence in the paint.

“De’Ana is battling an ankle injury, butwhen healthy will give us another in-sideout-side option. She has a very bright fu-ture. Both her and Savanna are also learn-ing how hard you must work to be suc-cessful at the collegiate level.”

Francis Marion’s home open will beThursday, Nov. 14, when the Patriots en-tertain Virginia University of Lynchburg at5:30 p.m. as part of the RIOT at the Rimfestivities. The team’s 26-game regular-season slate includes 11 home contests.

The Patriots have advanced to the NCAADivision II Tournament in four of the pastsix seasons, and own twenty-two 20-winseasons in the team’s 40-year history.FMU ranks eighth among all Division IIprograms in all-time victories with 790.

Pearl Moore, women’s basketball’s all-time scoring leader, is a 1979 Francis Marion University gradu-ate. Moore, a native of Florence and a graduate of Wilson High School, played for the Patriots between1975 and 1979, and the four-time All-American scored 4,061 career points.

Moore started her collegiate career at Anderson Junior College in the fall of 1975. After one semester atAnderson (eight games and 177 points), she transferred to Francis Marion. Fortunately, the Patriots didnot open their cage season until after the first of the year, and thus Moore played the entire 1975-76Francis Marion schedule. At that time under Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW)rules, a player could transfer and be eligible immediately. The 5-7 guard-forward went on to score 3,884points in a Patriot uniform. Her career point total includes the points scored at Anderson, because atthat time in women’s basketball, two- and four-year schools regularly competed against each other andall results counted.

During her junior year, she scored a then single-game record 60 points in a 114-71 victory over EasternWashington State College in the 1978 AIAW Small College National Tournament (see lower left photo). In her final collegiate game, March 10, 1979, an AIAW Small College Regional Tournament consolationgame against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, she tallied 42 points to break the previousall-time record of 4,045 set by Travis Grant of Kentucky State University.

Moore averaged 30.6 points per game over her four seasons (127 games) at Francis Marion, andhelped lead head coach Sylvia Rhyne Hatchell’s program to an 85-42 record and three national tourna-ment appearances. She scored below 20 points only 18 times in her Francis Marion career, andreached the 50-point mark on three occasions. She scored 1,109 points in her junior year alone. Inaddition to her point total, recorded in an era that did not have the three-point field goal, Moore grabbed1,270 rebounds and shot 45.9 percent from the field and a then school-record 70.0 percent from thefree-throw line.

Since that time, two male players (John Pierce and Philip Hutcheson, both of David Lipscomb University) have surpassed her total, but she stillstands as the only female player to reach 4,000 career points. MiriamWalker-Samuels of Claflin College (SC) is second on the women’sscoring list with 3,855 points.

Following her career at Francis Marion, Pearl went on to play two sea-sons in the Women’s Pro Basketball League (1979-80 with the New YorkStars and 1980-81 with the St. Louis Streak), earning All-Star status in1981, and one season in Venezuela.

Moore was one of the first inductees into the FMU Athletic Hall of Fame in1992. In 1994, she was nominated by the university for induction into theNaismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and her name remains inthe nomination process. During the summer of 1996, several items fromPearl’s playing days were sent to the Naismith Hall of Fame in Spring-field, Mass., for inclusion in the Women’s Basketball Exhibit Area. In 2000, she was inducted into theSouth Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 2008 became a member of the Florence Area Athletic Hall ofFame. In 2011, she was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tenn.
