Based around RTID (Radio Frequency Identification) this is a shopping bag which independently without scanning picks up signals from products that have been placed within it. The bags interface tallies the cost of the products placed within it in a financial and environmental sense; this allows users to monitor the impact of their everyday decisions on climate change.

VeggiePatch provides edible landscapes for urban spaces. Using recycled materials, irrigation technology and Permaculture principles it allows climate concerned city dwellers to experience the pleasure of cultivating food in space restricted, urban areas. Eliminating food miles, packaging, processing, and waste water used in flood irrigation at the beginning

of the food production cycle. And similarly greenhouse gas emissions, need for landfill and food waste transportation at the end, VeggiePatch allows for a plug and play approach to food cultivation and composting. Being adaptable to its surroundings, capable of watering itself, VeggiePatch gives urban residents a hands way to reduce their eco-footprints.

Munchkin is a toy envisioned for children aged four to eight, which makes nutritional information accessible and exercise not only rewarding but fun. It is a toy that when utilised in accordance with educational programs, GP monitoring and parental reinforcement provides children with an early understanding of how food choices and lack of physical

activity can impact health. Appealing to a child’s ability to nurture, and, competitive nature, Munchkin uses barcode scanning technology to provide children with a green light/red light feedback on food consumption depending on their caloric intake daily, their physical activity, and, time spent watching television.

Llifo is designed to be a more natural, subtle and sophisticated approach to massage and relaxation when in transit. This can be seen through the choice of form, material, and the use of selective massage, hand reflexology and heat, throughout the design. Both the nodes and heat ease any pain, stress or tension the user may have in their hands. In addition to relieving the physical aspects of stress Llifo also provides a mental break when used with the software provided in the package.

This television remote has the target group of elderly women. It is designed to meet the needs of an ever increasing aging population, especially single or widowed women. Many remote controls currently on the market alienate the elderly by using rigid shapes and being based entirely on visual ability.

Remotes today contain many buttons, most of which do not address the less

demanding needs of the over 65’s. Some remotes are physically uncomfortable to use due to arthritis and other joint related ailments whilst others are difficult to locate if misplaced and also difficult understand.

Each button is easily distinguishable by touch. Soft malleable materials were used to make the remote feel more familiar and less alienating.

Refugee Realities was a pilot event run by Oxfam Australia and designed to take participants, including school groups and members of the general public, through a simulated refugee experience. The event took place between 22 February and 13 March 2008 at Gasworks Arts Park in Melbourne. It incorporated a simulated refugee camp along with actors and former refugees and guides.

The project also incorporated a range of side eventsand projects including an exhibition of visual arts and written works made by former refugees in Australia, a mobile phone game about refugee issues, a comprehensive education kit linked to the Victorian Essential Learning Standards and a 45 minute film about young refugees in Australia.

The test flash site/game is currently available at http://dawidbleja.com/OxfamVVR/index.html

As a Creative Intern, my responsibilities in this project included several disciplines, from graphic design for postcards, posters and other publicity material, to multimedia design with flash game development and video editing in the Refugee Realities movie which I was also in as a former refugee.

My most challenging role was creating a sets and scenes for Refugee Realities on a very tight budget ( most objects were sourced out of dumpster and donated), I helped design and build an international house from which participants would flee, and an indoor desert with mines. All of which had cues for participants to discuss as they walked through the simulation. Refugee Realities had a life size Refugee Camp that helped demonstrate the conditions Refugees in camps faced daily.
