For more than 30 years, the generous parishioners of St. Agnes have been giving Christmas gifts to poor migrant children in Homestead. While learning all about Arctic habitats, Kindergarten students created their own Arctic Habitat booklets. Students had to pick their favorite Arctic animal, and explain why it is their favorite.

PK-3 Farm Day PK-3 students had a visit from The Little Farm. The children came dressed as farmers, and interacted with the different farm animals, including pigs, rabbits, ponies, turkeys and chicks!

Our Lady of GuadalupeThe Story
The Virgin of Guadalupe is the patron saint of Mexico. According to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to an indigenous man named Juan Diego on December 9, 1531. The Virgin asked that a shrine be built on the spot where she appeared in her name, Tepeyac Hill, which is now in a suburb of Mexico City. Juan Diego told the bishop about the apparition and the virgin’s request, but the Bishop didn’t believe him and demanded a sign before he would approve construction of the church.
On Dec. 12, the Virgin reappeared to Juan Diego and ordered him to collect roses in his tilma or cloak, a kind of cloak. Juan took the roses to the bishop and when he opened his cloak, dozens of roses fell to the floor and miraculously revealed the image of the Virgen of Guadalupe imprinted on the inside. The tilma with the image is on display in the Basilica de Guadalupe.
The Miracle of the Tilma
There are many interesting miracles surrounding the tilma on which the image of Our Lady was imprinted. Here are a few examples:
“Am I not here who am your mother?”“¿No estoy yo aquí que soy tu madre?”
1. The tilma is made from a very delicate material that, because of the climate in Mexico, should have only been able to last eight years before disintegrating. However, the tilma has survived for almost 500 years. This is despite the fact that for over a hundred years it was left exposed without protection.
2. The fabric was never properly prepared to be painted on and as a result, the paint is visible from both sides of the tilma.
3. Scientists cannot determine or trace the origin of the pigmentation on the tilma or how the pigments were applied to the fabric. It was not painted using any known technique, such as pastels or water based paint.
4. The eyes contain an image of what happened in the moment that Juan Diego showed the tilma to the Bishop for the first time. The image matches to perfection the dimensions of the room where they were.
5. The stars on Mary’s cloak coincide, in order, to the constellations over Mexico in December of 1531.
6. The image is filled with symbolism from both, the Aztec culture and traditional Roman Catholic theology. An example of this is the color of Mary’s cloak. The mantle of the Lady is blue-green or turquoise. To the native people, this was the color of the gods and of royalty. In Christian art, blue is symbolic of eternity. In Judaism, it was the color of the robe of the high priest.
